Meet the Contenders: Belmont Stakes Racing Festival at Saratoga

    June 2, 2025 | By Jeremy Plonk

Many of the nation’s top racehorses strut their stuff this week at historic Saratoga for the second Belmont Stakes Racing Festival at the Spa. Extended Wednesday through Sunday this year, the headliner will be Saturday’s final jewel in the Triple Crown, the 157th edition of the Belmont Stakes. For more on the big one, check out our free 1/ST Belmont Stakes Wager Guide. https://news.1st.com/wager-guides/belmont-stakes

Let’s meet the contenders for the Festival’s biggest supporting races:

    Thursday | Grade 2 $200,000 Intercontinental Stakes | Race 7

2-FUTURE IS NOW: Defending champion in this race has won 3 straight and 5 of her last 6 starts. She won her 2025 return in Keeneland’s Grade 3 Giant’s Causeway for trainer Mike Trombetta and will re-match with her 2-3 pursuers from that most-recent race.

    //

    Friday | Grade 1 $500,000 Ogden Phipps Stakes | Race 9

4-RAGING SEA: Breeders’ Cup Distaff runner-up has won 4 of her last 5 starts, including the Grade 1 La Troienne at Churchill Downs on Kentucky Oaks Day. She looks to improve on a fourth-place finish in last year’s Phipps as part of a 3-for-6 local record at Saratoga.

7-RANDOMIZED: Chad Brown trains the defending champion in the Grade 1 Phipps, who has traded decisions with stablemate Raging Sea – including a third-place La Troienne effort last time out behind that one.

    Friday | Grade 1 $500,000 Acorn Stakes | Race 11

2-GOOD CHEER: Undefeated Kentucky Oaks heroine looks for an eighth straight victory to open her career. The Brad Cox trainee has won over 3 different tracks, but will be trying Saratoga for the first time. Three of her Kentucky Oaks pursuers return, but the big challenge may be class riser Shred the Gnar.

    Friday | Grade 1 $750,000 New York Stakes | Race 12

8-SHE FEELS PRETTY: Dominant winner of 3 straight stakes at Keeneland (Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup), Santa Anita (American Oaks) and Kentucky Oaks’ Day at Churchill Downs (Modesty Stakes). The Cherie DeVaux trainee makes her Saratoga debut having won 6 of 9 lifetime.

    //

    Saturday | Grade 2 $300,000 Wonder Again Stakes | Race 6

6-NITROGEN: Four-time stakes winner aims for 5 straight victories as the Mark Casse trainee was easily best in Churchill Downs’ Edgewood Stakes on Kentucky Oaks Day. Saratoga debut for Medaglia d’Oro filly who won over 4 different courses so far during her current streak.

    Saturday | Grade 3 $400,000 True North | Race 7

2-CRAZY MASON: Almost comically deep closer drops so far back and has boasted a furious finish to win 3 straight races, including the Grade 2 Carter in April. Toughest challengers yet await this Greg Sacco trainee.

4-NAKATOMI: $1.6 million earner has placed in such prestigious worldwide sprints as the 2023 Breeders’ Cup Sprint and most recently April’s Dubai Golden Shaheen when missing by a neck. Won Saratoga’s Grade 1 Vanderbilt last summer for trainer Wesley Ward.

    Saturday | Grade 1 $1 million Metropolitan Handicap | Race 8

1-FIERCENESS: The Saratoga star of last year’s Jim Dandy and Travers looks for a fourth local win in as many tries. Todd Pletcher’s 2023 Champion 2-Year-Old won his 2025 return at age 4 in the Alysheba Stakes at Churchill Downs on Kentucky Oaks Day.

2-WHITE ABARRIO: Saratoga’s 2023 Grade 1 Whitney winner parlayed that success into a Breeders’ Cup Classic title 2 years ago. His 6-year-old season already has seen a pair of Gulfstream Park victories, including the Grade 1 Pegasus World Cup. This bankroll lifetime sits just shy of $7 million.

    Saturday | Grade 1 $500,000 Jaipur Stakes | Race 9

2-THINK BIG: The hottest turf sprinter in the land may be this 4-year-old for Mike Stidham, winner of the Shakertown at Keeneland and Churchill Downs’ Turf Sprint in back-to-back starts. He’s won 4 of his last 5 and will be making his first start in New York, meeting last year’s Jaipur runner-up Arzak among a 10-horse field.

    Saturday | Grade 3 $300,000 Pennine Ridge Stakes | Race 10

1-ZULU KINGDOM: Irish-bred, French export won last year’s With Anticipation at Saratoga and has tallied 5 of 6 lifetime starts after taking Churchill Downs’ Grade 1 American Turf on Kentucky Derby Day. The lone loss for the Chad Brown trainee came in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf.

    Saturday | Grade 1 $500,000 Woody Stephens Stakes | Race 11

5-CITIZEN BULL: Last year’s Champion 2-Year-Old and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner cuts back in distance for Bob Baffert after setting a fast pace in the Kentucky Derby. He’s 4-for-5 at distances 1-1/16 miles or shorter and gets a new pilot in Mike Smith for the first time.

10-CHANCER McPATRICK: Saratoga’s 2024 Grade 1 Hopeful winner looks to snap a 3-race losing streak while returning to 1-turn racing. He’s 3-for-3 in single-bend races like the Woody Stephens and takes blinkers off for trainer Chad Brown and regular rider Flavien Prat.

    Saturday | Grade 1 $1 million Manhattan Stakes | Race 12

6-SPIRIT OF ST LOUIS: New York-bred went from the state’s best turf runner to perhaps America’s best following wins this year in the Grade 1 Pegasus World Cup Turf and the Turf Classic at Churchill Downs just prior to the running of the Kentucky Derby. Chad Brown trainee has made sweet music with jockey Manny Franco, going 7-for-8 together and losing only by a nose in the lone defeat.

9-FAR BRIDGE: Saratoga’s Grade 1 Sword Dancer winner last summer has won both starts this year, the Pan American in Florida and the Man o’ War in New York. His renowned trainer Chirstophe Clement passed away last Sunday and this 5-year-old will be carrying many hearts with him as Clement’s son, Miguel, assumes the family stable.

Jeremy Plonk: Belmont Stakes 157 Draw Reaction

      June 2, 2025 | By Jeremy Plonk

The rematch is on for Belmont Stakes 157 at Saratoga. Eight runners entered the final jewel of the Triple Crown, led by Kentucky Derby winner Sovereignty and his budding rival Journalism, second in Louisville before a heroic victory in the Preakness Stakes. The two power players landed in posts 2 and 7, respectively. NYRA track oddsmaker David Aragona installed them the two favorites in the morning line at 8-5 for Journalism and 2-1 for Sovereignty.

Horseplayers betting Friday and Saturday’s Saratoga cards with 1/ST BET and Xpressbet can take advantage of the $20,000 Belmont Weekend Exacta-Thon over two days. And for more handicapping insights, access the free 1/ST Belmont Stakes Wager Guide. https://news.1st.com/wager-guides/belmont-stakes

Saturday will mark the ninth rubber-match between Derby and Preakness winners in the final jewel of the Triple Crown since 1990 – and second straight after an 11-year prior drought. Last year, both Mystik Dan and Seize the Grey failed to hit the Belmont board after their initial series victories. One other 2025 Kentucky Derby carryover in the race will be Baeza (post 6), third in Louisville and freshened with a trip back to his California base in the interim.

With a long run through the stretch the first time before the clubhouse turn and just a field size of 8, post positions should not have a major impact on the Belmont Stakes outcome. The race’s early pace figures to come from Wood Memorial winner Rodriguez (post 3) and Sir Barton winner Crudo (post 5). Those two drawn in close proximity should make for an easy follow of the expected front-runners. Sovereignty should tuck in from near the back from post 2 and save ground until called up on the far turn. Journalism has done his best running outside of foes and should appreciate being in post 7 of 8.

Saturday’s Belmont Stakes Day program gets underway at 10:45 am ET and includes undercard stakes like the Grade 1 Jaipur, Woody Stephens, Metropolitan Handicap and Manhattan Stakes. Advance wagering will be available at 1/ST BET and Xpressbet on the full Saturday card beginning on Friday.

      Belmont Stakes 157 | Saratoga | Saturday, June 7, 2025 | Race 13 | 7:04 pm ET

1-Hill Road (Chad Brown / Irad Ortiz Jr.) 10-1
      2-Sovereignty (Bill Mott / Junior Alvardo) 2-1
      3-Rodriguez (Bob Baffert / Mike Smith) 6-1
      5-Crudo (Todd Pletcher / John Velazquez) 15-1
      4-Uncaged (Todd Pletcher / Luis Saez) 30-1
      6-Baeza (John Shirreffs / Flavien Prat) 4-1
      7-Journalism (Michael McCarthy / Umberto Rispoli) 8-5
8-Heart of Honor (Jamie Osborne / Saffie Osborne) 30-1

        Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

Presque Isle Downs - Race #1
#1 Fistfulofmoney He made a nice move to the front in the debut before getting outkicked late but there is some room to come forward off that run with a potentially nice trip waiting for him down inside of a couple quicker players early.
#6 Shez Twisted She folded up pretty quickly when taking a lot of cash at first asking, but she draws well to force the issue from out here and wouldn't be a surprise for a top team -- at an underlaid price.
#4 Judy Chop Think the one outside will prove best of the quick players , but this one ran well enough in the debut to think he's in the frame here with any reasonable upside second out.
Race Summary Fistfulofmoney has already shown a bit of ability to get past horses, and that should serve him well with a couple quick players lined up further outside.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #5
#1 Speight the Snow He was pretty decent here last season and has just enough positional pace to stay close from the inside early today. Hoping for a mildly playble price.
#6 Schnittker His form is honest enough so far, and he has some upside in the second start back off the long break. Capable, but I worry he'll be overbet today.
#5 Just Relax Not a ton of committed early speed lined up here, so this one's graduation run last time out gives him some appeal here if he can control the early tempo today.
Race Summary Speight the Snow may be able to find a spot just a couple lengths in behind the pace, and the move back to the local footing offers some hope to improve off a dull turf route last out.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #6
#4 Moms Tribute She showed a little bit of interest before flattening out in the comeback run, but I liked the way she at least got involved in that last one and now has some room to improve second off the break. Enough to like at what should be a solid price.
#1 Menty B Respect the team and the debut line from Belterra, but she was 4/5 that day against a small group and wasn't a serious threat to the winner -- and now she may take a bit of action while trying the new footing. I don't know...
#5 Bloody Colors Wave Tactical type has run well in a couple main-track sprints so far, and she should find herself in a good spot turning for home. In the mix.
Race Summary Not sure what to do with #8 Spanish Cara coming in with the fading Southern California form. Her better stuff keeps her in play.

          Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

          Horseshoe Indianapolis - Race #1
#5 UNBRIDLED TALENT (4-1) &nda Starts fresh off bullet workout, should sit ideal stalking trip.
#6 SI CERTO (7-2) – Finished in the money in five consecutive long-distance allowance tests.
#2 WATCHER (5-2) – Speed of the speed, but back-pedaled in lone route attempt.
Race Summary UNBRIDLED TALENT settled a couple lengths off the pace and romped in a five-horse field when she last raced here in November. She breezed 5F in 1:01 flat for her first start in four months and could benefit from the same winning tactics in this field. Bet to win and place and play 5-2 and 5-6 exactas.
          Horseshoe Indianapolis - Race #3
#2 RIGOBERTO (3-1) – Money-burner gets one more chance on return to maiden-breaking distance.
#9 SOLAR POWER (5-1) – Rallied wide from same post, ran third against Rigoberto after 3 months away.
#3 SLAM DUNK JUSTICE (7-2) &nd Plays to a steady beat in sprints, can surpass six figures in earnings.
Race Summary RIGORBERTO pressed SILVER STERLING on the inside before giving way to the fast pace and fading as the beaten favorite for the fourth time in a row. He has the same rival to deal with today in his third start of a cycle at a shorter distance. Bet to win and place and play 2-3 and 2-9 exactas.
          Horseshoe Indianapolis - Race #6
#6 FASCINATOR (10-1) – Longshot was caught by next-out repeater on all-weather track two back.
#4 DON’T LOOK BACK (9-2) Most route experience, top speed figure in turf route in the field.
#8 CELEBRITY RO (3-1) – Close up but lacked stretch kick in lucrative MSW routes out of town.
Race Summary FASCINATOR returns to MSW company and returns to turf, where she started her career at Santa Anita. She was well-beaten on the Keeneland dirt last out but showed marked improvement on Turfway Park’s all-weather track prior to that to warrant longshot consideration. She made a middle move to a brief stretch lead two starts back against Hidden Presence, who came back to win a $40,000 grass route at Laurel Park by 2-3/4 lengths as the favorite. Bet to win and place and play 6-4 and 6-8 exactas.

Handicapped by The Turf Club Analysts

                PURCHASE

                Mountaineer Park - Race #3 - Post: 7:50pm - Claiming - 5.0 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $11,300 Class Rating: 67

                Rating:

                #3 RED SHAHEEN (ML=8/1)
                #7 SOOEY STRONG (ML=4/1)
                #1 STANDINGINTHEFIRE (ML=30/1)

RED SHAHEEN - This horse is racing on the turf for the first time. He should be tough, coming off a first place finish in his race on April 21st on a sluggish track. The morning line odds on this gelding are higher than those of the other entrant from the shedrow of conditioner Matejka. Often the longer-priced part of a 'split' entry wins. I like when a campaigner wins after shipping in from elsewhere. It shows that they really like the track here. I'll take this gelding to win again. Horse has improved at least 2 speed figure points in last two races. I look for that to continue to trend in a positive direction right here in this race. This gelding's last fig earned on April 21st is number one in last race speed figures. SOOEY STRONG - When you handicap turf races, it's always a good idea to look for a horse who has a win over the course. This jock and handler have a beneficial return on investment when they combine forces. Reed is strong in turf sprints. This equine should have no excuses if he doesn't win. STANDINGINTHEFIRE - Gelding has shown some pace. This shorter trip should be better for him. This jockey/conditioner duo has been producing a very profitable ROI, right at +80. I can't ignore the fact that this gelding is working extremely well.

                Vulnerable Contenders: #2 DIABLO DADDY (ML=2/1), #5 TURF CAT (ML=3/1), #6 NARIZON (ML=6/1),

DIABLO DADDY - Hasn't raced or had any drills since May 11th. Not much value on this favorite. TURF CAT - Should have at least finished in the money in the last two months in a short distance race to be worth a shot at modest odds in a sprint. Just cannot wager on any steed right back after he doesn't finish in the money after any long vacation. NARIZON - Most of the time I need a sprinter to have some recent success in sprint contests in order to play him.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #3 RED SHAHEEN to win if you can get at least 7/2 odds
                EXACTA WAGERS: Box [1,3,7]
TRIFECTA WAGERS: Box [1,3,7] Total Cost: $6
                SUPERFECTA WAGERS: None

                  RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                  # 8 FOOLISH GAMES 4/5
                  # 3 SWEET SERENADE 5/2
                  # 2 NIGHTSABER (GB) 12/1
FOOLISH GAMES is the best wager in this race. This group is much softer than the last one she faced. Have to wager on this mare with the strong earnings per start in turf sprint contests. With a nice Equibase class figure average of 89, has one of the strongest class advantages in this group of horses in this race. SWEET SERENADE - Has performed admirably as of late in sprint races, posting a nifty 72 avg speed figure. Could provide positive profits based on competitive recent Speed Figures with an average of 65.

Race 4 - Maiden Claiming - 8.0f on the Dirt. Purse: $17000 Class Rating: 60

FOR MAIDENS, THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD. THREE YEAR OLDS, 119 LBS.; OLDER, 124 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $11,000, FOR EACH $1,000 TO $9,000 2 LBS.
                    RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                    # 5 WELL SUITED 2/1
                    # 3 SMEAUXKINITUP 5/1
                    # 2 HIGH WATER MARK 8/1
WELL SUITED is the strongest bet in this race. Look for a strong pace improvement from this animal who enters with second time Lasix today. Has to be given consideration - I like the figures from the last outing. Earning some nice money in dirt route races. SMEAUXKINITUP - He has been running admirably and the Equibase Speed Figures are among the top in this field. Will probably be one of the early speedsters of the pack going into the midpoint of the contest. HIGH WATER MARK - Ought to be given consideration as he drops to compete against this less demanding bunch. This animal could upset this field at a nice price.

                      Presque Isle Downs - Race #7 - Post: 6:12pm - Claiming - 8.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $13,000 Class Rating: 71

                      Rating:

                      #7 CEFALU (FR) (ML=5/2)
                      #9 SUSANOO (ML=10/1)

CEFALU (FR) - You have to really like that latest race speed fig, 69, which is the top latest race speed rating of this field. This horse has increased her speed ratings from a fig of 58 to 64 to 69 in succession. SUSANOO - I'm optimistic this filly will run well today. Last work was 2nd fastest of the day, which tells me she's sharp right now.

                      Vulnerable Contenders: #8 SWEET LILIBET (ML=3/1), #3 TANGO ZULU (ML=9/2), #6 HIGHLAND HOLIDAY (ML=6/1),

SWEET LILIBET - Just cannot play this horse. Didn't show me anything in the last race or on March 26th. TANGO ZULU - Hard to wager on any thoroughbred to turn things around if there is no value to taking the risk. HIGHLAND HOLIDAY - No value in playing this racer. Probably won't improve off that May 20th affair.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: #7 CEFALU (FR) to win at post-time odds of 6/5 or better
