Santa Anita Race 1: Post: 1:00 PT Grade: B+
Main Ticket: 4-A Friend of Mine
Backups: 3-Time to Shine.

Forecast: A Friend of Mined outrun her odds (14-1) when nosed out in a decent debut dirt sprint here last month and today stretches out to a mile in a below standard maiden special weight main track affair for fillies and mares. We’d prefer she had another sprint prior to running long, but the daughter of Mineshaft may be an okay sort at least and could produce a significant forward move in her second career outing. In a race lacking in speed, she should be forwardly placed throughout.

Santa Anita Race 2: Post: 1:32 PT Grade: B
Main Ticket: 2-Check’s On the Way; 4-Letmein.
Backups: none.

Forecast: Check’s On the Way is a consistent gelding and appears to be most comfortable as a late running sprinter. Conditions are ideal for the S, Callaghan-trained sophomore to settle early and tag the speed close home. He’s listed as the 2-1 second choice behind Letmein (6/5), who finished behind our top pick in a similar state-bred dash last month.

Santa Anita Race 3: Post: 2:05 PT Grade: B+
Main Ticket: 1-Nevada Beach
Backups: none.

Forecast: Nevada Beach: won at first asking in clever fashion like a pretty nice prospect sprinting for B. Baffert, and although moving right into stakes company and stretching out to a middle distance the son of Omaha Beach should be able to handle the class hike and added distance in stride. In a four runner affair with stable mate Gaming the 6/5 morning line favorite, we’ll prefer the longer price of the two with the colt that may have more upside.

Santa Anita Race 4: Post: 2:36 PT Grade: C+
Main Ticket: 7-Full Moon Grazen; 4-Mo Town Gal.
Backups: none.

Forecast: Full Moon Grazen plummets to the $5,000 level and appears to have found her friends. Drawn comfortably outside, the S. Martin-trained filly lacks early speed but against this modest group and may be able to tag the leaders close home. Mo Town Gal is another big class dropper seeking her winning level. She’s a fit on numbers and seems likely to step forward in her second start off a layoff.

Santa Anita Race 5: Post: 3:06 PT Grade: B-
Main Ticket: 3-Baldoro
Backups: 5-Rastaman Vibe; 6-Promissio.

Forecast: Baldoro was moved too soon by D. Herrera and paid the price late when winding up second after striking the front at the furlong pole but losing his steam in the final stages in a restricted $30,000 claimer last week. The short rest notwithstanding, the L. Powell-trained gelding can beat this field with waiting tactics. Both of his career wins were accomplished over the local lawn, and this shortened trip to a mile should be in his favor.

Santa Anita Race 6: Post: 3:38 PT Grade: B
Main Ticket: 4-Go Go Prancer
Backups: 2-Proud Racer.

Forecast: Go Go Prancer was beaten as the favorite in his last two starts but his speed figures are rising and this drop into the maiden $50,000 level should prove to be the winning maneuver. However, at 6/5 on the morning line he won’t offer any real value other than as a short priced rolling exotic single.

Santa Anita Race 7: Post: 4:08 PT Grade: B
Main Ticket: 2-Dicey Mo Chara (GB); 7-Genius Jimmy.
Backups: 5-Spycatcher.

Forecast: Dicey Mo Chara (GB) gets some class relief with this drop into the two-other-than allowance condition and should take full advantage of the opportunity. The veteran gelding has been in nothing but graded stakes events for more than two years, and while his form is solid and his numbers strong the L. Powell-trained import really is overdue for a win. This placement offers that chance. Genius Jimmy does his best on the front end and if he can establish the running without pressure he’s likely to get very brave.

Santa Anita Race 8: Post: 4:38 PT Grade: B
Main Ticket: 4-Naida
Backups: 1-Misty Muppet.

Forecast: Naida missed by a half-length and was 10 lengths clear of the rest in a similar restricted $16,000 claiming miler for fillies and mares last month. Anything close to that effort today should make her hard to beat at what probably be close to even money. However, with Del Mar on the horizon, the chances of her being claimed are quite high, leading us to believe that maybe her connections wouldn’t mind losing her, and that’s a bit of a worry.

Main Ticket: 2-Vinalia (GB); 4-Unbinding
Backups: 5-Thea; 6-Eiffel.

Forecast: Vinalia (GB) just missed in a photo in a similar turf sprint for maiden fillies and mares in a performance that produced a career top number. She’ll be rolling late again. Unbinding finished a close third in her debut at Lingfield in England in April and makes her first start off the plane for M. Glatt, who does well with the limited number of European imports that he’s had. She looks like a live item in an open fray.

Al Cimaglia: Northfield Park Late Pick 4 Analysis

Northfield Park begins the week with a 15-race card. The $1.00 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 11. The sequence has a $10,000 guaranteed pool, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections are based on a fast track.

Race 11 (10:46 PM EDT) (9:40 PM EDT)

4-Spaaaanazo (2-1)-Can get a good early seat and figures to be in the hunt. Will be a short price and this level can be a challenge. But should be respected and Aaron Merriman can provide a winning steer.
6-Spitfire Oversees (8-1)-Has raced well in the last 2 starts after shipping in from the Mea. Thestable.ca entry gets a new pilot in Tyler Angus and could be a threat at a price if kept within striking range.

Race 12 (10:02 PM EDT)

2-Jbmagic (15-1)-Looking for a big price and with an inside post draw the Tyler Bates entry is an interesting option. Has learned its lessons on the Fair circuit but has hit the board in all 3 starts at Nfld and has taken 2 pictures. Can get a good early seat and could surprise off an efficient trip.
4-My First Fire (7/2)-Left from post 7 versus this kind at ScD and raced well considering the trip. Raced wide and hard to finally land on the point only to fade down the lane. Should be a threat at a square price with a less taxing journey.
9-House Of Brix (3-1)-If the Jeff Smith pupil started from the inside, he would be a heavy chalk rather than the tepid morning line favorite. Does good work on the point and probably won't get there when the wings fold. But is still the one to beat if lands in a close-up seat off the gate.

Race 13 (10:24 PM EDT)

4-Wicked Character (9/5)-The Burke trainee can string a couple of wins together and comes off a sharp effort for a picture. Steps-up and this level could be a challenge. The morning line seems too flattering but this post draw should help its cause.
6-Makin Some Noise (9/2)-Didn't leave last time and raced huge from the backfield to come a close 2nd. This race could set up differently. My guess is aggressive steer is coming when the wings fold and that should make the veteran a major player.

Race 14 (10:46 PM EDT)

2-Crosswinds Sweetpe (7/5)-This filly doesn't have big gate speed, and the entire field doesn't have much early speed. Austin Hanners should get the top easily from the 2-hole, then take control and not look back.
5-Gotstopaymeinpapa (3-1)-Merriman is between the pipes and gets some class relief. Has only 1 win in 18 starts but should get a smooth trip with this post draw and may have met a beatable field.

Hawthorne - Race #1

#3 Prancipants	She found some better form again in those recent starts, and she is capable of something better than she showed in her most recent start over the local footing. Capable at a midrange price.
#8 Big Sally	There isn't a ton of super-serious early speed signed on in here, and this one draws well while outside of the other forward players. Perfect press-and-pounce trip could be waiting for her.
#2 Go Stormin Girl	She has been pretty honest over this main track, but I worry that she has been in the habit of giving away ground late in her races.
Race Summary	Prancipants has some appeal here while likely finding a good spying spot in behind a few quicker players early. Would be happy to land here at something a bit shorter than the 12/1 ML offering.

Hawthorne - Race #3

#3 Hurts So Bad	He has a bit of pace and still showed some resilience last out when rallying nicely after winding up at the tail. He didn't get a clean go that day, either. Tough today?
#2 Racarino	Presser should be in a good spot turning for home, but he has been a bit one-paced late in most of those starts on his page, making him potentially vulnerable to someone finishing just a bit better here.
#1 One Putt Richie	He benefits if all the potential forward players hook up, and he should be able to save some ground from the rail draw. Dropper fits.
Race Summary	Hurts So Bad can be tough here after a tricky go last time out, and his combination of pace and a mild pressing ability could serve him well here.

Hawthorne - Race #4

#1 Good Apple	He's back off the bench, and I like that he returns in allowance company today after the flat first try for the new team. Think there are a couple races on the page that would make him tough.
#7 Last Minute	He woke up at second asking with an easy score, and something similar here would keep him in the mix. Think there are enough versatile forward players in here to keep him honest?
#8 Dick Best	Enough to like here after he just missed in the local debut, as something similar keeps him in the frame again today. Like the draw for him to pick his spot.
Race Summary	Good Apple could work out a trip from the inside while flashing a bit of pace, but he can probably tuck in just a bit behind the more committed forward players.

Rider hops right back on board after getting to know the magnificent animal by riding last race out. That's always a helpful angle. If you review the PP's for this horse, you'll see she has recorded the top Equibase speed fig at the distance and surface. A repeat race in this event and this horse has a superb chance to win. SHE'S A GAMER - Horses out of the barn of Casse have been solid on the grass. Should perform well. LUNA LOUSKA - This is this filly's first try on the grass. Ran well finishing first on May 1st. The track was slow that day, so I think this animal will take to the turf. Lower weight of -8. In my opinion, a movement of five is important, so this filly falls into this category. Three consecutive improved Equibase speed figs (20-51-82) make this horse a dominant contender.

Has to be carefully examined versus this group of horses displaying formidable figures recently and an average speed rating of 62 under similar conditions. R N R AUDIBLE - Win percentage one of the most competitive in this group of horses in this race. Should be considered a contender on earnings per start at the distance/surface alone.

LUTHER PASS - This gelding has been trying different distances, but from the looks of things, he ran a nice speed figure last try at this trip. I look for this pony to sit chilly and make a strong move on the turn, cruising straight on to the finish line.

JEDI'S WAY - You always think this animal has a shot to win, but he just misses most of the time. I checked out this horse's past performances and he doesn't do well as the favorite and is likely to be favored today. SEXY CHOCOLATTE - Hard to keep chasing this sort of 'bridesmaid' horse. Improbable that the rating he notched on May 27th will be good enough in this event. PUNCTUALITY - Just can't play this questionable contender. Didn't show me anything positive last time out or on May 11th.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - LUTHER PASS - Made up lots of ground on May 25th at 5 furlongs. Should relish the distance of 1 mile.
