Jeff Siegel's What You Need to Know - Santa Anita - 6/13/25

    June 13, 2025

Jeff Siegel’s “What You Need to Know”
    Friday, June 13 2024
    Santa Anita Park

Specifically designed for the rolling exotic player, Jeff Siegel’s “What You Need to Know” isolates those horses that should be included in daily doubles, pick-3s, pick-4s, pick-5s, and the pick-6.

For additional commentary, follow us on twitter @jsiegelracing.

Grade Descriptions: Grade A=Highest degree of confidence; Grade B=Solid Play. Grade C=Least preferred or pass; Grade X=probable winner but likely at odds too short to play.

    __________________________________________________ ________
Santa Anita Race 1: Post: 1:00 PT Grade: C+
    Main Ticket: 1-Annie’s Joy
    ; 7-Free and Humble.
    Backups: none.

Forecast This turf sprint restricted (nw-3) to $30,000 claiming fillies and mares lacks pace, and that should promote the chances of Annie’s Joy. She shows the always popular blinkers off angle, lands the rail, and projects to be close up throughout and have every chance due to the soft pace flow. The switch to J. Hernandez doesn’t hurt, either. Free and Humble seems likely to fold over into a good second flight, stalking position from her outside draw and have dead aim from the quarter pole home. True, she’s never been big on winning, but none of these are.

    __________________________________________________ ________
Santa Anita Race 2: Post: 1:30 PT Grade: A-
    Main Ticket: 5-Desert Gate

    Backups: none.

Forecast: Desert Gate was highly impressive previewing at the OBS March Sale (:09 4/5) and has looked the part in his local drills since joining B. Baffert’s main string. The son of Omaha Beach is comfortably drawn outside and seems likely to go lower than his 6/5 morning line.

    __________________________________________________ ________
Santa Anita Race 3: Post: 2:00 PT Grade: C
    Main Ticket: 5-Be Punctual
    ; 5-Fireman Dan
    Backups: 2-Mongolian Max.

Forecast: Here’s a real scramble in which nothing would surprise us (hence the “C” grade). Use as many as your budget allows. Be Punctual seems as good as any. In the frame in three of his five starts over the local main track and with early speed that he can be put to good use, the son of I’ll Have Another is reunited with “win” ride K. Frey and projects to be in the fray throughout. Fireman Dan just missed at 18-1 in a similar event over this track and distance and if he can turn in two alike he’ll be a strong factor in the final furlong.

    __________________________________________________ ________
Santa Anita Race 4: Post: 2:30 PT Grade: B
    Main Ticket: 5-My Bucket List

    Backups: none.

Forecast: My Bucket List seems well-spotted for a major effort. A beaten choice two runs back and then victimized by a poor start at Los Alamitos in his most recent outing, the Sky Mesa gelding returns to his claim level and has back races that would be more than good enough to win. He knows where the wire is, has won over this track in the past, and should offer reasonable value at or near his morning line of 9/2.

    __________________________________________________ ________
Santa Anita Race 5: Post: 3:00 PT Grade: B
    Main Ticket: 4-Spotted Haze
    ; 9-Ellen Jorth
    Backups: 8-Hurricane Layla.

Forecast: Spotted Haze may have a slight edge in the early speed department and projects to be a strong factor from gate to wire in this first level allowance grass dash for state-bred sophomore fillies. Fresh from a career top effort when winning a starter’s allowance affair on the main track, the daughter of Stanford returns to grass and ran well when second over this course and distance two runs back. She’s reunited with “win” rider J. Hernandez and shows a healthy series of workouts since raced. We’re expecting another forward move. Ellen Jorth displayed a bit of quality when graduating over the local lawn in her debut last month. She’s back a little quick for our liking but is fast on numbers and projects to enjoy a soft trip outside.

    __________________________________________________ ________
Santa Anita Race 6: Post: 3:30 PT Grade: B-
    Main Ticket: 3-Stellar Cap
    ; 4-Putt for Dough.
    Backups: none.

Forecast: Stellar Cap drops to her lowest level ever and appears to have found her friends. A repeat of her strong runner-up effort in a slightly tougher spot two races back should be good enough to handle this $8,000 claiming assignment, especially at this abbreviated sprint distance. Putt for Dough is a two-time winner over the Santa Anita main track, is a fit on numbers, and is the one fear most. This is a realistic spot for the class dropping daughter of Nyquist.

    __________________________________________________ ________
Santa Anita Race 7: Post: 4:00 PT Grade: B
    Main Ticket: 6-Game Warrior
    ; 10-Muscled.
    Backups: 1-Lyle the Crocodile.

Forecast: Game Warrior removes blinkers, adds Lasix, exits a series of tougher stakes races, and picks up J. Hernandez. He’s fast enough on numbers to beat this field and projects to draft into a comfortable second flight, stalking position. Muscled, a first time gelding, must overcome the extreme outside draw but if he can secure a decent trip the P. Gallagher-trained sophomore should have a strong say in the matter. He may be most effective if taken back early and allowed to produce one late kick.

    __________________________________________________ ________
Santa Anita Race 8: Post: 4:30 PT Grade: B
    Main Ticket: 3-Hejazi
    ; 2-Eagles Flight.
    Backups: 4-Mbagnick (Chi).

Forecast: Hejazi has trained like he’s fit and ready, but he’s never been one to be completely straightforward, so we’re not sure if we trust him. The B. Baffert-trained son. Of Bernardini has some superior back form (was second in the 2023Malibu S.-G1) but has been beater four times as the favorite in nine career starts. Eagles Flight may be cut from the same cloth. A well-beaten third at 2/5 last time out, Flightline’s half-brother shortens to a sprint and may be most comfortable around one turn. He continues to train like a high class prospect; however, it is difficult to say if he’s genuine.

    __________________________________________________ ________
Santa Anita Race 9: Post: 5:00 PT Grade: B+
    Main Ticket: 9-Video Review
    ; 5-Tees Touch (GB)
    Backups: 4-War to Remember.

Forecast: Video Review shows up in a seller for the first time, removes blinkers, adds Lasix, and is a first time gelding. At least one of these significant alternations should have a positive impact, maybe all four. At 6-1 on the morning line, he’s worth a gamble, especially when you add to the mix his recent sharp workouts. Tees Touch (GB) ran quite well when second in his U.S. debut a year ago May facing straight maiden company but then disappeared. He returns in a logical spot with a work tab at Los Alamitos that should have him plenty fit. Based strictly on numbers, the P. D’Amato-trained import is the one to beat.

Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Late Pick 4 Analysis

      June 13, 2025 | By Al Cimaglia

      XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Yonkers Raceway has a 9-race card to begin the weekend. The $2.00 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 6, and it will be my focus. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

      Race 6 (8:25 PM EDT)

2-Factory Girl (2-1)-Steps up again but doesn't meet a deep field. Has won 2 straight handily and has big gate speed so will respect chances of a 3-peat. Faces a field where 3 others also step up. Using the one below and is the only horse who drops and draws inside.
3-Ideal Cover (8-1)-Has been cashing checks at this level and Bret Holland should be able to work a stalking trip from this post. Could be the best down the lane if in striking range to tackle the leader.

      Race 7 (8:45 Pm EDT)

4-Djimon (2-1)-The first start in town was not fruitful, suffered an equipment break and was bet down to 7/5. Drops and should have his way with this group. George Brennan can get the top and not look back. Does well at Yonkers (8-4-0-0).

      Race 8 9:05 PM EDT)

1-Silk Cloud A (7/2)-Going to fade the 2-1 program chalk #8 Walkin On Sunshine and will start with this veteran who drew the rail. Jordan Stratton should be no worse than in the pocket off the gate and could take a picture with an efficient trip.
5-Seaside Diva (5-1)-Classy mare banked over $570k last year but has only 1 win in 8 races at YR. The Burke trainee could be a factor at a square price with an aggressive drive by Jim Marohn.
6-Front Page Story (6-1)-Everyone moves up in this field except for #6 and #7, and this mare comes off a gate to wire score. Pat Lachance has a post edge on the Invite horses, could get the jump on them and pop at a solid price.

      Race 9 (9:25 PM EDT)

3-Nikasa N (6-1)--Will finish up by fading the rail horse who is 6/5 in the morning line and doesn't have much gate speed. Team Stratton entry should relish the company, could leave, get the top and be tough to tackle. The veteran mare has hit the board in 18 of 33 with 5 pictures.

      $2 Late Pick 4

      2,3/4/1,5,6/3
      Total Bet=$12

Woodbine Pick 4 Analysis | Friday, June 13

        June 13, 2025 | By Frank Carulli

        WOODBINE PICK 4
        Friday, June 13, 2025

Large fields, large number of combinations, large payouts. The 20-cent Pick 4 at Woodbine often plays out that way. The sequence covering races 7 through 10 this Friday, June 13 takes shape this way:

WDB 7th race (4:00 p.m. EST) -- Three of the 10 entrants are eligible for this race, having not won in the last year. But with 16 wins between them, they make the ticket against seven rivals who are a combined 14-for-128 with two wins apiece. STYLISH GENT raced in-hand on the backstretch, set a pressured pace on the turn and stopped in the final furlong against open $7,500 claimers. He can go non-stop off the Adamo claim in his second start in 2025. U S ARMY CORPS is a steady 70 Beyer type with an 18/4-2-2 record on Woodbine’s synthetic track and a useful showing off a five-month layoff. TOLD IT ALL dropped in for the cheapest claiming price of his career but dropped out of the race with a terrible start. He raced erratically most of the way as the favorite but flashed some run when he wasn’t headstrong.

WDB 8th race (4:30 p.m. EST) -- CANYOUHEARMERUNNIN is 5-for-12, has tactical speed and ran second in a stakes race at Assiniboia Downs off a similar layoff. But the layoff after a December claim is a concern for how well he ran last out, making a quick move at the quarter pole, leading briefly in mid-stretch and missing in a photo finish in a longer sprint. MAMBA ON THREE, hard-used dueling inside a pair of rivals, went down fighting as the beaten 5-1/2F favorite but can make amends with a similar effort at 5F. DETERMINED FURY lacked room at the 1/8th pole but got up to beat ‘Mamba’ for his second win in a row and improve to 17/4-2-4 over the surface. GRAINGER COUNTY is an ultra-consistent sprinter, looking to pick up where he left off in 2024 with three photo-finish victories in seven starts. EXECUTIVE SEARCH, a twice-beaten favorite in long sprints to close 2024, will need some pace to rally into in his seasonal debut, but trainer Martin Drexler is hot, so use him on the ticket.

WDB 9th race (5:00 p.m. EST) -- Half the field in this one-mile starter allowance arrives off victories, but only CAUSIN’ MAYHEM has a turf win on his resume. Then there’s MY SEA COTTAGE, who has speed, drops and gets in light-weighted for the red-hot Mark Casse barn. Or HEMLO GOLD, who just missed in a 7F sprint on the synthetic track off a five-month layoff and posted an 81 Beyer in winning his prior start on turf. Go five-deep in Leg C of the Pick 4.

WDB 10th race (5:30 p.m. EST) -- CLIVE CROSS has done little in four starts at this level, but he deserves a second look off a pair of sizzling recent workouts in :46 and :47 flat over the track. I’M NOT LOST, one of three first-time starters in the field for owner Bruno Schickedanz, goes post-ward for trainer Norman McKnight, who is on a 9-for-38 run with maiden claimers with a positive R.O.I. TRUE SHOT found his best stride while 6-wide in the stretch of a shorter comeback sprint dominated by the favorites. BENNYS JETS gave way chasing the 5-2 second favorite through fast fractions but can carry his speed farther from the rail in this spot.

        Suggested 20-cent Ticket
        WDB 7th Race: 3, 6, 7
        WDB 8th Race: 1, 2, 3, 6, 8
        WDB 9th Race: 1, 3, 6, 7, 8
        WDB 10th Race: 1, 4, 9, 11
        Cost: $60

          Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

          Santa Anita - Race #7
#1 Lyle the Crocodile He's got some pretty reliable form that looks like it can be competitive at this local level, and I like that he's at least not coming off a super long layoff. Check him out.
#2 Helicity Like the way his form has been heading in recent starts, but I wonder if he's just a bit better going short right now. In the mix but could be vulnerable late.
#6 Game Warrior He has been fairly competitive in those underneath spots in stakes races, and that should make him a good fit here while getting some class relief. One of the ones.
Race Summary Lyle the Crocodile is a fresh face here with some reliable overseas form, and I'm hoping he'll offer a midrange number while trying the locals for the first time.
          Santa Anita - Race #8
#2 Eagles Flight Wonder if the price might actually be just this side of playable thanks to the presence of the guy next to him? The guy who beat this one last out came back to run a big one in stakes company next out, and the cutback could wake him up today.
#3 Hejazi Figures to be a battle between these two, and this one has the more impressive sprint form with a Grade I placing on his page from the Malibu late last year. The one to beat in a fun race.
#6 Traegar He's capable of something better than he showed last time out, but his better stuff might still be just a touch light compared to the top pair.
Race Summary Eagles Flight and Hejazi look tough to get past on paper, and the tote action is going to reflect that. Two really nice horses in one fun sprint spot -- enjoy it.
          Santa Anita - Race #9
#1 Makutu Nothing from him in the debut run, but I feel like there might be something a bit better to offer with that race under his belt. Should be overlooked on the tote.
#5 Tees Touch No argument from me here on form if you want to take a solid stand here. Price probably gets short, but he's supposed to hit hard today.
#8 Video Review Speed comes back fresh with the blinks off, and that could lead him to a decent spying kind of run while racing short here.
Race Summary Makutu looks interesting enough at what should be a big price off the dull debut run. Outside of Tees Touch, I'm not sure who you're supposed to be all that afraid of here.

            Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

            Woodbine - Race #1
#2 CRUCIAL TAUNT (5-2) Drops and shortens up off useful return, company lines stand out.
#5 REGGIE BOY (4-1) Distant third off layoff, behind 2-1 pace setter and 3-to-5 favorite.
#7 BOURBON NORTH (9-5) Stalked 3-wide, lacked stretch kick for $40k as the faves finished 1-2.
Race Summary CRUCIAL TAUNT was ‘in the hunt’ while 4-wide at the top of the stretch for a higher claiming tag in his seasonal debut. He has two third-place showings in eight starts, but those eight races produced 11 follow-up winners with an average 69 Beyer. Get your day started with a win and place wager on today’s Best Bet. Also play 2-7 and 2-4 daily doubles.
            Woodbine - Race #2
#7 JMR SPEEDY ESCAPE (5-2) Floated 6-wide in lane, almost reached the leader with furious charge.
#4 DISSECTOLOGIST (7-2) Can be excused as beaten choice, sheds 6 pounds, needs alert start.
#6 FRAC RIGHT (2-1) Should be back on the engine on class drop in second start back.
Race Summary JMR SPEEDY ESCAPE was ‘hard held’ on the backstretch, but should sit a good stalking trip from closer striking range in this spot. He made a ‘sharp’ 4-wide move on the turn and was floated to the 6-path for the stretch drive that resulted in a runner-up finish. Bet to win and place and play a 4,7/4,6,7/ALL trifecta.
            Woodbine - Race #4
#6 BACK RIVER (8-1) Exited super ‘key’ race two back, ran third in fast-paced long sprint in latest.
#9 CELENTANO (3-1) Battled on outside, led momentarily near stretch, held third on drop to this level.
#10 RESTORING ORDER (10-1) Gets class relief, can rally for share if he avoids wide trip.
Race Summary BACK RIVER was ‘in tight’ in a seasonal debut that produced five next-out winners, one each for $15,000 and $25,000. He raced 5-wide in the stretch and finished third in a fast-paced long sprint try last out. Give him the nod for win and place bet and 6-ALL exacta in a weak field.

                  # 1 DON RUFFO 7/2
My selection in here is UNDER THE WATER. With Rivera getting the mount, watch out for this horse. RICHPORT - Velez has him trained admirably to break rapidly out of the gate. DON RUFFO - Should come out strong - I have liked the way this colt has moved promptly to the lead recently.

                    Prairie Meadows - Race #2 - Post: 6:27pm - SO - 5.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $17,800 Class Rating: 84

                    Rating:

                    #5 BEREA (ML=5/1)
#1 LONG MAY SHE RUN (ML=7/2)

BEREA - Martinez has an 'uncoupled' entry here. Best to watch out for the longer priced half. This mare is in nice form. Ended up first on May 24th. Past Performances show this pony with 3 improving Equibase speed figures. Delacruz should be on a live horse in this race. LONG MAY SHE RUN - This animal is uppermost in earnings per race. She looks nice in today's event.

                    Vulnerable Contenders: #4 CHAPARRITA (ML=2/1), #2 SCOOT ALONG (ML=5/2), #6 FULL SPIRIT (ML=6/1),

CHAPARRITA - A 'performance bounce' is likely to happen for this animal in today's event. May rebound next time. SCOOT ALONG - No picnic to bet on this runner this time. Make her show you something in a sprint contest before you bet on her in a race of 5 1/2 furlongs. This filly didn't do much for me last time out of the box. FULL SPIRIT - This horse ran her best fig in awhile. May bounce and run poorly off that attempt.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Have to go with #5 BEREA on the win end if we get at least 5/2 odds
                    EXACTA WAGERS: Box [1,5]
                    TRIFECTA WAGERS: Skip

                      # 7 MARK DID IT 7/2
                      # 5 HORNBEAM 3/1
                      # 10 MY SLICK NICK 20/1
I think MARK DID IT is a decent choice. His 79 average has this gelding with among the best speed figures in this race. Must be given a chance - I like the figs from the last contest. Formidable average speed figures in dirt route races make this racer a key contender. HORNBEAM - Is tough not to consider given the company run in lately. He has recorded quite good numbers under today's conditions and ought to fare well versus this field. MY SLICK NICK - With a very good 70 speed figure last time out, will unquestionably be a factor in this competition.

                        Energy Downs 307 Racing - Race #8 - Post: 6:55pm - Allowance - 5.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $15,500 Class Rating: 83

                        Rating:

                        #8 CLAY'S RUBY LOVE (ML=8/1)
                        #1 STARDUST DREAMS (ML=6/1)
                        #4 SHEZA DELIGHT (ML=8/1)

CLAY'S RUBY LOVE - You'll be generating money right and left by turning your bankroll onto this jockey/conditioner combination. Likes to go to the front of the pack and the fact that today is a shorter trip should be beneficial. Mare won her last race here on May 24th as a shipper. I think she looks like a winner once again. The improved speed ratings over the last three races is solid. McKinney drops her in this event fit and ready to go. STARDUST DREAMS - This mare is in good form, having run a good race on May 16th, finishing first. This mare should run better today now that she's back facing here own gender. Utilizing this rider/handler combination is a good choice. Mare is a few starts into a come back here. Should give a big race today. SHEZA DELIGHT - This front-runner should profit from this race's shorter distance. Nice return on investment for this rider and handler duo. Every now and then I take some time off, when I come back to the track I feel refreshed. I think it's the same with this mare as she always seems to run well after a layoff. This horse has shown the capability to win at different racing venues. Making the move from Blackfoot for today's event, I have to believe she's ready to run.

                        Vulnerable Contenders: #7 SATIN HEART (ML=7/2), #2 CELEE'S LAST TE (ML=9/2), #6 SUPER ANNIE (ML=5/1),

SATIN HEART - Didn't finish in the money on October 5th at Arapahoe Park. Followed it up with another less than stellar try. When looking at today's class rating, she will have to garner a better fig than last time out to battle in this dirt sprint. CELEE'S LAST TE - Tough for anyone who saw this questionable contender in her last contest to wager on her today. SUPER ANNIE - Not probable for this horse to make an impact with no success lately in a sprint event.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Have to go with #8 CLAY'S RUBY LOVE on the win end if we get at least 5/2 odds
