Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Pick 5 Analysis

    June 16, 2025 | By Al Cimaglia

    XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Yonkers Raceway has a 9-race card, and the $1.00 Pick 5 starts in Race 5. The sequence has a $10,000 guaranteed pool, and it will be my focus. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 5 (8:05 PM EDT)

1-Sweet Beach Life (2-1)-This is a fast horse that doesn't connect enough and has gotten camera shy this year
(7-0-3-0). Has been close at this level on the Hilltop but hasn't converted. Drawing the 1-hole could change that outcome. Has done well at YR (6-2-3-0) and could return to its winning ways here.
3-Speaker Of Peace (5-1)-Draws the right post to score and has been tossing hints since stepping up after a win 2 back. Raced better last time than the line looked. Paced the back half in 55.3 to miss by less than 2 lengths. The half went in a tepid .58 and shouldn't be paced compromise this time and did win the last start from this post.

    Race 6 (8:25 PM EDT)

1-Diego N (5/2)-Raced with the Invites in the last 3 starts and that was tough sledding. Gets class and post relief, and this looks like a good spot for a picture. Jordan Stratton should get on the engine and not look back.

    Race 7 (8:45 PM EDT)

1-Howlenthehills (3-1)-Had been facing tough foes up North and now lands in a spot to shine. Faces 3-6-year-old pacers and went gate to wire against this kind on 4-14. Matt Kakaley should be looking to follow the same script, but taking a pocket ride could be a ticket for success too.
6-Dunkin' (5/2)-Ships back to YR and has been in fine form. George Brennan has big gate speed to use and could look to fire out. Should be tough to tackle if gets the lead without much strain. But needs to mind matters, has had breaking issues as the wings fold.

    Race 8 (9:05 PM EDT)

2-Rolling With Sam (4-1)-Gets a new set of hands in Tyler Buter who has been clicking of late. Does best racing near the top of the stack and that trip could happen with this draw. The last line is better than it looks, went the back half in .55 but faced a well-meant winner.
4-Gingras Beach (4-1)-Comes off a no-move mile leaving from post 8. Now, gets post and class relief plus Jason Bartlett sticks. When Bartlett and the Bucci barn team up they post 30% winners.
6-Brutallyhandsome A (5-1)-The 7-year-old has lost some off his fast ball but meets a group with issues. Gets some post relief which should be enough for Stratton to have in play. The gate speed is there at times and could land on top or in the pocket if the pedal is pushed down.

    Race 9 (9:25 PM EDT)

1-Vici (5/2)-Leaving from post 1 could make the winning difference at this level. Won 2 and 3 back, then faced $60k claimers and rallied from the backfield to come a close 3rd. Meets the same, and this should be "go" time as a claim could be coming.
4-Smiffy's Terror N (8-1)-Drops to a level where a win is possible and draws well. Needs a trip, and if Austin Siegelman can get off the gate to grab a close-up seat good things could happen at a price.
5-Heza Charttopper A (2-1)-Also takes a good drop and posted 2 straight wins back on 2-24 and 3-3 when last in versus this kind. Bartlett gets the call, and when teamed with trainer Scott Blackler they post 29% winners.

    $1 Pick 5

    1,3/1/1,6/2,4,6/1,4,5
    Total Bet=$36

      Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

Presque Isle Downs - Race #1
#2 D'oro Lemon Expected a bit better from him last time out when making the local debut, but I wonder if he might still be working his way into his form cycle. Peaks today?
#1 Mohtafil He's the one to beat in here and should be tough to open the card, but that was also the case on paper last time out when he was third at 40 cents on the dollar. Capable at another short price.
#5 Frozen Four Reliable finisher fits here but has been coming alive too late for only small shares in recent starts. One of the ones, but could see him settling underneath again.
Race Summary D'oro Lemon only showed a mild bit of late interest last time out, but I don't totally trust the chalk in here and think this one might spring a mild upset.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #5
#1 City Tripper He's back fresh with a few races on his page here last year that would fit well enough with this crew, and he might get a really good tactical trip near the top from the fence.
#5 Oskar Martinez He has a couple of decent sprint efforts on his page, but I think he's better going long right now and might be a bit of an underlay on the board.
#6 Carcone Dangerous player fits on paper, but I worry that he'll be along too late again today. Decent local debut last out, though.
Race Summary City Tripper is a fairly honest type who wasn't totally overmatched with similar last season. Let's see if he can bring a big run off the break.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #8
#5 I'm No Angel He comes out of an OK race for twice this price against some of them who went in today's opener, and he should find a pretty perfect first-over run from here.
#10 Skippy Town Considered him on top after the OK try last out, but he will probably take some cash again and hasn't stayed late with much enthusiasm in any of his three career starts.
#2 Dominator C. Liked the local debut here last out when landing third at 19/1, and he's a player right back with this crew if you want to take that one at face value after he woke up with the locals.
Race Summary I'm No Angel can be tough here after turning in an underneath effort in a race that felt better top to bottom than the one he'll find here.

        Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

        Parx - Race #1
#2 FIFTH OF MAY (5-1) – Flashed ability against better out of town, shortens up for new connections.
#3 RAVENITE (3-1) – Rallied for minor awards in last two starts, gets Paco for third start as a 3yo.
#8 AMELIORATE (6-1) – Heavily bet off year layoff, clipped heels early, blew clear lead nonetheless.
Race Summary FIFTH OF MAY showed forward ability at various venues going a route of ground but lacked stretch kick. She makes his Parx debut for a 21-percent route-to-sprint barn and gets the call in a wide-open race. Bet to win and place and play a 2/3,8/ALL trifecta.
        Parx - Race #2
#1 WE’RE EVEN (6-1) &nda No threat to recent allowance winner for higher tag, rally fits with these.
#4 DOS DE OROS (6-1) – Second in 3 of 8 starts this year, enters high-percentage claim barn.
#6 FLUFF THE PILLOW (3-1) &nda Romped on the class drop for Ness going a route of ground.
Race Summary WE’RE EVEN raced evenly in a fast-paced route before fading in the stretch in his repeat try. The winning favorite, Town’s Warrior (7/2-3-3, $50k), blew past the field and came back to repeat in an allowance next out. Bet to win and place and play a 1, 4 with 1, 4, 6 exacta.
        Parx - Race #5
#1 WE READY (7-2) – Doesn’t win often but always in the hunt, met $232k earner when third in latest.
#2 KOBE B (6-1) – Stopped off Lake claim, merits second look on class drop with proven Parx record.
#7 MY DEVILS CHILD (4-1) &ndas In good form cycle, can surpass $100,000 in 6F earnings.
Race Summary WE READY has the best company lines, ran 1-2-3 from among his last four starts for a $5,000 tag and has license to upgrade a 2-for-29 record at 6F off the Pino claim. He got up for third behind the dueling leaders as the pace quickened in a longer sprint last out. Bet to win and place.

              # 5 FORTINBRAS 4/1
BAJAN BOY looks to be a very good contender. This lot is much less demanding than the last one he was up against. BEE A SKY BEAM - He has recorded decent figs under today's conditions and should fare well against this group. Earned a strong speed fig in the latest race. Can run another good one in this contest. FORTINBRAS - Is worth looking at and may be a wager - strong Equibase Speed Figures (74 average) at today's distance and surface as of late. Handler has sharp win rate (26 percent) at this distance and surface.

                Presque Isle Downs - Race #4 - Post: 4:51pm - Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $15,000 Class Rating: 68

                Rating:

                #6 FIRST FORAY (ML=7/2)

FIRST FORAY - Gallardo should have her moving big on the turn. The May 20th affair at Presque Isle Downs was at a class level of (74). Dropping down in class ranks a significant amount, so she should be in a good position to win.

                Vulnerable Contenders: #3 ON RESERVE (ML=2/1), #4 NIGHT NURSE (ML=5/2), #2 PERFECT PINK (ML=4/1),

ON RESERVE - Didn't finish in the money on October 23rd at Presque Isle Downs. Followed it up with another less than stellar effort. This favorite hasn't raced or worked at the track in awhile. No morning drills since last race. NIGHT NURSE - Today's event is 6 furlongs. Hasn't finished in the money in a sprint contest in the last 60 days. Not the best of omens. Somewhat easily forgotten speed rating in the last race at Presque Isle Downs at 5 1/2 furlongs. Don't believe this mount will improve too much in today's race. PERFECT PINK - Finished third in her most recent race with a mediocre speed figure. When I look at today's class figure, it would take an improved performance to win after that in this group.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #6 FIRST FORAY to win if we can get at least 1/1 odds
                EXACTA WAGERS: 6 with [1,4]

FOR MAIDENS, THREE YEARS OLD. WEIGHT, 122 LBS.
                  RECOMMENDED CHOICES

                  # 3 RUN BENJI RUN 4/1
                  # 1 CHARLIE TOLU 5/2
MCMUSIC looks very good to best this field. Looks decent for the conditions of this contest today, showing solid numbers in dirt sprint races lately. Has to be given a chance based on the solid speed figure put up in the last competition. RUN BENJI RUN - Could beat this group of horses in this race given the 67 Equibase Speed Fig earned in his last outing. Has to be given a shot versus this group of horses displaying solid figs lately and an average speed figure of 67 under similar conditions. CHARLIE TOLU - Ought to be given a shot here on the basis of the figs in the speed department alone. Look for a quite good pace improvement from this horse who enters on Lasix today.

                    Prairie Meadows - Race #10 - Post: 6:47pm - Maiden Claiming - 8.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $12,000 Class Rating: 62

                    Rating:

                    #4 FULL VICTORY (ML=7/2)
                    #2 RED RIVER (ML=5/1)

FULL VICTORY - Rider hops back up aboard after getting to know the beautiful animal by riding last out. That's always a positive sign. The ROI when Pusac and Schleis get together is outstanding. Have to make this gelding a strong challenger; he comes off a solid race on June 1st. Ran last time out against a higher rated class of horses at Prairie Meadows. The move to a lower class level should suit him well. RED RIVER - Recent Equibase speed figs show dominant pattern of improvement. This horse's last race was at Prairie Meadows in a race with a class rating of 69. Dropping considerably in class figure in today's event puts him in a solid position in this race. With 'blinkers-on' this gelding should be very competitive.

Vulnerable Contenders: #6 DRAW YOUR BOW (ML=2/1), #1 DAWN STRATEGY (ML=5/2), #3 ILLEGAL ICE (ML=8/1),

DRAW YOUR BOW - When looking at today's Equibase class figure, he will have to notch a better speed fig than last out to battle in this dirt route. DAWN STRATEGY - Hasn't been doing anything at all recently. When examining today's Equibase class figure, he will have to notch a better speed rating than last out to be competitive in this dirt route.
