Northern Stars Turf Festival Analysis: Saturday, June 21, 2025

      June 18, 2025 | By 1/ST BET

      Analysis by Angela Hermann

Race 1 – A pair of Arizona-breds, #2 Unrivaled Queen & #5 Sharp Attitude, stand out in the first after their bouts together in Phoenix. In both stakes races the former defeated the latter, but both were slightly longer sprints. Three others exiting their most recent contest returned to win against open company, and Unrivaled Queen found this level a good fit on opening day of the meet.

      R1 selections- 5-2-3

Race 2 - The 10% Takeout Pick Five begins in the Curtis Sampson Oaks. #5 Rich City Girl should be a popular single with a daunting resume in the Oaks, and she is the first of a formidable Larry Rivelli contingent in the mix today. She’s been no secret in of her five race career, delivering three of the four times she’s been favored – including a win on Kentucky Downs turf as a juvenile. #2 Skipwineyesterday raced exclusively around two turns on turf until a runner-up finish on dirt last out. The only Canterbury grass win in this group is hers and she will be coming at the end.

      R2 selections - 5-2-4

      Pick 5 ticket: 2,5 / 1,5 / 1,3,7 / 1,7,8 / 6,7 = $36 wager

Race 3 - The Brooks Fields Mile rematches several from a June 1st mile won in swift time by #5 Kennebec. The fourteen time winner and Fausto Da Silva have not missed the exacta in seven tries together, including a mile stakes victory at Turf Paradise in March. Runner-up in this race last year, #7 Tonka Warrior, rarely misses the mark on Canterbury grass and should be moving late with Kennebec. New face #1 Saline River traded jabs with Kennebec and #2 Fearless Soldier in Arizona this winter, but got the better of them in shorter races. Rider Guillermo Rodriguez knows him well and their inside draw should keep them in good position throughout.

      R3 selections - 5-1-7-4

Race 4 - #1 Mastery Kat & #3 Derrygoolin move to the dirt off a close finish together on turf. Mastery Kat’s last two wins were on the dirt, and these two could have more pace to chase. #2 Angela’s Party Girl & #5 Lemon Bomb could make life difficult on each other if they employ their usual front-running tactics, and a few in here are stretching out from sprints.

      R4 selections - 1-3-2-7

Race 5 - The Lady Canterbury is bookended by Canterbury’s 2024 Champion Older Mare and Champion Three-Year-Old filly. Between #1 Cupid’s Crush and #8 Retired Kathy, a group assembled from Prairie Meadows, Sam Houston, and Hawthorne look like they’ll establish a solid early pace. That should play well into the hands of #8 Retired Kathy, who’s shown versatility at age four with wins on the front end and on dirt. That dirt score in the Lady Slipper stakes should have her sharp to try for her third W in a row. On the other hand, #1 Cupid’s Crush was last seen sprinting at the Fair Grounds in March. The schedule she kept this winter was salty, and she’s well drawn to use her speed over a course she loves.

#7 Tour Queen captured the Curtis Samson Oaks on this day last year in the mud, then added two quality runs going long on turf to cap her season. If she returns as the same filly she was in September, she was within a couple lengths of ‘Cupid and should be a square price. Illinois invaders #3 Queen Judith and #4 Cat Attack exit a common race that fits well in here, and shippers based there have enjoyed success in the Lady C.

      R5 selections - 8-1-7-3

Race 6 - The Canterbury Derby concludes the Pick Five. A pair of trainers seek their second win in this race and they saddle two of the likely favorites in #5 Homie and #7 Sushi Man. One Bid Stables’ homebred Sushi Man worked his way through Oaklawn Park and Prairie Meadows maidens before breaking through with a seven length score in his first try going two turns on the turf. Coty Rosin won this race in 2023 with Golden Bandit and a similar front-running trip could unfold for this Minnesota-bred. #5 Homie seeks to push his lifetime record to three for three in his first outing as a three-year-old. Both wins saw the son of Mendelssohn on the pace, and he should be prominent early for Larry Rivelli who won this race in 2021 with King of Miami.

Two inside-drawn runners with prior Stakes experience on dirt are #1 R N R Audible and #2 Smoken Boy. The latter will try his sixth different track and makes his turf debut in his ninth start. His best performances to date came on wet tracks, and should this race get washed off the turf his stock rises. #1 R N R Audible’s female family says he should like turf, and his solid win in his return to Canterbury should have him at his best to give it another shot at a price.
#6 Canyon Streak is a threat on turf or a muddy surface, and has enough speed to get good early position. His versatility and strong string of races in Texas make him a top contender.

      R6 selections - 6-7-5-3

Race 7 - The Dark Star Turf Sprint welcomes a pair of speedy gray sophomores from Larry Rivelli’s stable to square off against elder pros over the local course. Morning-line favorite #7 Star’s Image and barnmate #1 Big Vince were separated through their winter/spring campaigns, picking up a pair of wins the Fair Grounds and Turfway Park respectively. Rivelli hasn’t missed the board at Canterbury since 2019, but keeping that streak intact will not be easy.

#5 Philo Beddoe & #6 Bodenheimer ended their 2024 Canterbury season running one-two in a five furlong turf sprint, and both started their 2025 Canterbury campaigns with victories of the same variety. #8 Plane Talk hasn’t run much lately on Canterbury grass but was second in this race in 2022 and 2023, and will go this year for trainer Jose Silva, Jr. Altogether, these three post an impressive 22-11-5-4 record on the local lawn.

The pace figures to be sizzling in the seventh, but #6 Bodenheimer owns the most wins here and can put big races back-to-back-to-back….and he’ll need his very best again to beat this group.

      R7 selections - 6-5-7-8

Play of the Day: Race 7 - $10 6/5 Double

Race 8 - #2 Mad House debuted in January against eventual Sam Davis winner John Hancock, and this is his shortest race since that strong second. He has the kind of speed to take these all the way, but there are others quick off the blocks to his immediate right and left as well. #5 Neoteric exits the same maiden as Mad House and nearly caught the winner that day. Tim Padilla is four for his last five moving MSW from turf to dirt at Canterbury, and this one should be coming late again.

      R8 selections - 5-2-1-3

Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Late Pick 4 Analysis

        June 21, 2025 | By Al Cimaglia

        XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
The Meadowlands has a 14-race card with the 0.50 Early Pick 4 starting in Race 6. The sequence has a $50,000 guaranteed pool with a 15% takeout, and it will be my focus. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

        Race 6 (8:25 PM EDT)

3-Shesgotthejack (5/2)-Doesn't have the bankroll of the chalk, #2 Worklifebalance but has a chance to get some revenge starting inside, and right next door. The last 2 races have been better and has shown good gate speed at times. Should get a cozy trip tonight. My take is the chalk gets bet down and will control the mile while Tim Tetrick sits in the pocket and rolls by down the lane.

        Race 7 (8:50 PM EDT)

1-Sir Pinocchio (3-1)-Got the benefit of getting the top early on and Jason Bartlett provided a well-rated trip. This horse likes to win, capturing 11 of 17 last year. Can string wins together and this looks like a double up possibility.
3-Date Night Hanover (6-1)-Broke stride 2 back and wasn't handled aggressively early in the mile. But came home with a 26.1 last panel and finished 2nd by a neck. Scotty Z should work an efficient trip and be within reach of the leader at the 3/4's pole.
8-Gruesome Twosome (4-1)-Got the 2-hole off the gate and couldn't catch #1 on 6-13. That was the 1st start since shipping in from HoP and was off almost a month. The post makes the price and was bet down to even money in last. Should be better and may get the job done despite the outside draw.

        Race 8 (9:15 PM EDT)

6-Take All Comers (9/2)-Going to take a swing the Jim Campbell pupil will fire hot off the bench. Drew off by over 5-lengths in a qualifier on 6-7. Yonkers invader was in great form when put away in November, and this outfit wins 40% of the races off a layoff.
8-Ari Ferrari J (3-1)-Downed this kind at 3/5 in last leaving from post 7. Can fly when the wings fold and land no worse than in the pocket. Could win right back and should pay a better price.

        Race 9 (9:40 PM EDT)

2-Captain Luke (8-1)-Raced big to finish 3rd from post 8 in the 1st start since shipping in from Wbsb. Comes right back and gets some post relief. Could be better in the 2nd start here and will still offer a solid price.
3-Calicojavck Hanover (5-1)-Was used hard off the gate from post 10 in the 1st race since arriving from up North. Did put in a strong try to lose by less than a length. The post relief could be a winning difference and has finished 2-2-1-1 in the last 4 races.
11-Chain Gang (20-1)-Will take a swing for a large price and the Noel Daly trainee could get a more efficient trip from the 2nd tier than it had last time. Was in 10th place at the half call and then rolled the 2nd half in .53. Could surprise if Andy McCarthy works a smoother trip this time and the fractions are lively.

        $1 Early Pick 4

        3/1,3,8/6,8/2,3,11
        Total Bet=$18

          Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

          Thistledown - Race #7
#9 Moonlite Dance Pace couldn't stay in the final stages of the debut run, but he outran his price that day and presumably has some upside with that start under his belt. Watch him carry that speed today.
#1 River Bye He has some upside in the second start back and figures to find a pretty cozy trip along the inside. One of the ones, but I'd want a much better price than the 90 cents on the dollar he offered last out.
#6 Flaring Song His recent sprint form is better than the overall page looks, so maybe one of his better one-turn tries would keep him in the mix today?
Race Summary Moonlite Dance showed decent debut pace that could be more dangerous with that experience behind him. Would be excited to see something like the 6/1 ML offering on the board.
          Thistledown - Race #11
#5 Candelight Hours She has been competitive with some OK groups on her page, and she'll go third off the bench looking for a peak effort. I'm curious.
#6 Where's My Ring She's probably supposed to handle this crew while bringing a recent Grade I placing with her, but she has never been the most reliable type -- she can hold bad form.
#7 Peignor She has been an underneath type in minor stakes company, but that keeps her on the radar against this group after facing better at Pimlico last out.
Race Summary Candlelight Hours might get overlooked just a little bit on the board here, but she's pretty honest and should get a great run of things while close to the action the whole way.
          Thistledown - Race #12
#2 Chunk of Gold He was a little bit closer than I expected him to be in the Derby, but I think he's in line for a good run while closing into an honest pace today. Really liked his New Orleans tries this winter.
#6 Clever Again Glad to see him back so quickly after getting roughed around by the winner in the Preakness, but he wasn't moving like anything good by that point anyway. Still, he flashed some serious talent and wouldn't surprise here if he can shake off the other speed.
#4 Mcafee Not totally sold on this one, but he's coming out of pretty honest races and could get the right kind of spying trip here.
Race Summary Chunk of Gold is a gritty type who was up against it while tucked in behind a quick pace in the Derby, but a more realistic race flow for him today should leave him in a much better spot.

            Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

            Canterbury Park - Race #3
#2 FEARLESS SOLDIER (9-2) Must avoid duel off the re-claim to spring mild stakes upset.
#5 KENNEBEC (8-5) Rallied for 8 wins, 6 seconds and nearly half of $396k bankroll in 1M turf races.
#7 TONKA WARRIOR (5-2) Transitioned well to class drop and return to turf, finished fast.
Race Summary FEARLESS SOLDIER shook a long duel with returnee HALF BROTHER to forge a mid-stretch lead before trip-sitting favorite KENNEBEC and late-charging TONKA WARRIOR passed by. He can turn the tables at a good price if he doesn’t get locked in a fast-paced battle again. Bet to win and place and play 2-5 and 2-7 exactas.
            Canterbury Park - Race #4
#1 MASTERY CAT (6-1) Can upgrade minor rewards with faster pace to rally into from the rail.
#6 MOONLIGHT TRYST (6-1) Sprung upset for new connections, well-spotted to do it again.
#2 ANGELA’S PARTY GIRL ( Won by city block twice in ‘25, second to pair of next-out winners in latest.
Race Summary MASTERY CAT tracked the two favorites and came up a neck short in a three-horse photo finish in the same spot on turf. But she can handle the dirt and could upstage a series of in-the-money finishes with more pace up ahead. She couldn’t reach front-end winning Crystal Coach as a twice-beaten favorite at Turf Paradise before her last start. Bet to win and place and play a 1, 6/1, 2, 6/ALL trifecta.
            Canterbury Park - Race #5
#8 RETIRED KATHY (5-1) More interested in winning than retiring, often at good odds.
#3 QUEEN JUDITH (9-2) Bid 3-wide, took aim at pace controller Cat Attack, ran second at 7-1/2F.
#1 CUPID’S CRUSH (5-1) Won three consecutive long-distance grass tests last fall.
Race Summary Minnesota Oaks champion RETIRED KATHY tries to add a Lady Canterbury stakes victory to her resume. She rallied for six wins in her last 12 starts, mostly at one mile, and was favored only once. She should get plenty of pace to rally into if she doesn’t try to join the front-runners as she did in a recent allowance win on the Tampa Bay Downs lawn. Bet to win and place and play a 1-3-8 exacta box.

                  # 6 MR. DISRESPECTFUL 4/1
                  # 3 RODRIGOKNOWS 10/1
                  # 1 BARELY FUNTIONAL 15/1
I've got to go with MR. DISRESPECTFUL. Has raced well in dirt route races. Is a solid contender - given the 108 Equibase Speed Figure from his most recent race. Has been racing quite well and has among the best speed in the race for today's distance. RODRIGOKNOWS - This gelding could improve now going off Lasix. With Frey uptop him, this gelding will probably be able to break out quickly in this race. BARELY FUNTIONAL - Horses who have been prepared to race at this distance and surface by Garcia have shown sharp results recently. With better than average trips to the winner's circle, Gonzalez ought to have this gelding in excellent position to win the race.

                    Thistledown - Race #7 - Post: 2:48pm - Maiden Special - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $33,900 Class Rating: 41

                    Rating:

                    #9 MOONLITE DANCE (ML=6/1)

MOONLITE DANCE - The return on investment when Chavez and Erdel team up is good. Last ran at Thistledown and finished fifth. Reviewing his past performance data, I see he was close at the wire, within 5 of the winner.

                    Vulnerable Contenders: #1 RIVER BYE (ML=7/2), #10 GRITS N GRAVY (ML=4/1), #6 FLARING SONG (ML=9/2),

RIVER BYE - Don't think that this gelding has value at 7/2 this time. GRITS N GRAVY - Doesn't look to have enough positive angles to warrant the price. FLARING SONG - Last ran on Jun 3rd at Thistledown, finishing seventh. Not likely to perk up off of that try in today's race.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Have to go with #9 MOONLITE DANCE on the win end if we get at least 1/1 odds
                    EXACTA WAGERS: 9 with 7

Energy Downs 307 Racing - Race #9 - Post: 4:50pm - Stakes - 5.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $30,000 Class Rating: 46 John Schiffer Memorial Futurity

                      Rating:

                      #3 KNOTTY KNOT (ML=6/1)
                      #8 NICK'S ATTITUDE (ML=6/1)
                      #1 GALA GOLD (ML=7/2)

KNOTTY KNOT - The 'x-factor' at work here is that this gelding has been working over this track getting ready for his first start. The jock/conditioner duet of Aguilar and Dominguez has a strong return on investment together. NICK'S ATTITUDE - This first-timer has been getting primed in the morning at Energy Downs 307 Racing, a good sign. This gelding has higher odds on the morning line than the other entrant from the stable of Hall. Better watch out for this angle. I know the stable is serious today. The gelding gets Lasix for the first time. GALA GOLD - This filly ran versus the opposite sex last time. In with her own gender today. Have to give this filly a chance. Ran a good race last time out within the last month. This filly's last speed rating earned on May 25th is in the top spot in last race speed figures.

Vulnerable Contenders: #2 DIVA IN MOTION (ML=3/1), #4 TWO STEVES (ML=9/2),

DIVA IN MOTION - Trying to beat this horse in today's event at the value of 3/1. TWO STEVES - I don't have a good feeling about this steed in this affair.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - KNOTTY KNOT - Lasix can cure a good many ills. This race horse is getting it for the first time today.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: #3 KNOTTY KNOT is going to be the play if we are getting 9/2 or better

                        RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                        # 2 POWER OF LANI 6/1
                        # 6 NO SEDONA 2/1
                        # 1 APOLLITICAL SINNER 10/1
I give the nod to POWER OF LANI here. Lopez has strong numbers that point to this filly to be a strong contender. With a respectable 53 speed rating last time out, will surely be a factor in this contest. NO SEDONA - Has formidable speed figures and has to be considered for a bet in this contest. He has a good opportunity for this race as trainer, Guerrero, has sharp win rate with horses going this distance.
