Al Cimaglia: Northfield Park Late Pick 4 Analysis

    June 22, 2025 | By Al Cimaglia

    XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Northfield Park has a 15-race card, and the $1.00 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 11. The sequence has a $10,000 guaranteed pool with a 14% takeout, and it will be my focus. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 11 (9:40 PM EDT)

4-Legacy Affair (4-1)-Takes a good step up and it isn't alone but does good work at Nfld (8-3-2-1). Has the gate speed to get a top of the stack trip and likes to win (37-8-10-2). Should be in the hunt with a good steer from Justine Irvine.
6-Kildare King (8/5)-Chris Beaver trainee has good speed and can carry it. May have met a field that will help it prove itself at this class. The most proven winner at this level is assigned post 8 and will fade off recent efforts.

    Race 12 (10:02 PM EDT)

4-Power Sweet (2-1)-This is the level for a win but still needs a trip. Hasn't been as sharp as last year and has burned money in the last 2 races. Aaron Merriman is at the controls, that's a ++ driver change after being hung the mile on 6/18. Comes back quickly and could finally reward backers.
8-Dragon Candy (7/2)-Has been in the mix at the wire but has lacked enough to take a picture. Ronnie Wrenn steered last week and showed a bit more. He sticks, this looks like a wake-up opportunity and the post helps the price.

    Race 13 (10:24 PM EDT)

3-Sure Thing Captain (2-1)-Steps up off a sparkling win from the 8-hole and is having a very nice year (21-9-3-0). Was parked early on and took control to draw off by 7 lengths. This will be more difficult, there are a couple others who could have a say. But considering Merriman will probably be on top or in the pocket off the gate, this will be my pick to double up.

    Race 14 (10:46 PM EDT)

1-Center Story (6/5)-Learned it lessons on the Fair circuit but has trouble winning at Nfld. Not liking the short price but Nick Clegg could work a suck-around trip and be the best down the lane.
3-Red Hot Ember (12-1)-This is a price shot who is making the 2nd start of the year and showed some life in last. Now will race with its nose on the gate and could be there at the wire. Chris Lems sticks, and he can provide a smooth trip.
5-Well Desired (9/2)-AMac steers and he is the best pilot in the race on a horse who showed improvement last time. This will be the 5th lifetime start, and my feeling is an aggressive steer is coming.

    $1 Late Pick 4

    4,6/4,8/3/1,3,5
    Total Bet=$12

Johnny Burke | All My Bets | Sha Tin | Sunday, June 22, 2025

      June 21, 2025 | By Johnny Burke

We’re back after a week off in Hong Kong and ready for a pair of Group Stakes races to cap off the weekend. Eleven races are on the card, the fields are full, and from the jump we have some potential prices that could pad up the bankroll. Let’s get into it!

      Helpful Resources

      Sha Tin – June 22

      Past Performances

      Speed Pro Pace Projections

      Unique Bet Types

SWINGER – Select at least two runners to finish in the top three in a race in any order, get paid for each correct combination

QUINELLA – Select the top two runners in a race in any order, get paid for each correct combination

TRIO – Select the top three runners in a race in any order, get paid for each correct combination

DOUBLE TRIO – Select the top three runners in TWO races in any order

      Methodology

Power ratings are calculated by a mix of runner performance versus historical average, quality of the field in each race, weight-based handicaps, and lengths beaten or won. I’ve also added in daily adjustments for track biases to try to normalize any outlandish times and create a more level figures system.

      Race 1 | 1000M | Class 4

      Quinella Box – 1,3,4,5

Notes: A Class 4 five-furlong sprint opens the card on Sunday, and the Morning Line favorite is a first-time starter by a sire whose crop is only winning 9% of their sprints. #1 AURORA PATCH is making his debut for a barn winning 12% over sprint distances and gets apprentice jockey Britney Wong who has been impressive in her first Hong Kong season. #3 PERFECT GENERAL is the Prime Burke Rating favorite, and second choice on the Morning Line. #4 GRAND NOVA and #5 BOWSER are both strong contenders in good form for barns excelling in the sprint division and have more than a fair shot at hitting the wire first. With some solid prices behind us, let’s take a shot at the opening Quinella.

      Race 2 | 2000M | Class 5

      Win – 2 ESCAPE ROUTE

      Exacta – 2 w/ 1,3

Notes: Dropping down to Class 5, 2 ESCAPE ROUTE tops the Prime Burke Ratings chart and was in impressive form before a twelve-length loss in his last start at Class 4. He gets an extra furlong, and the trainer/jockey combo of Hugh Bowman and John Size is one worth keeping an eye on. 1 HAKKA RADIANCE has been climbing back into form and is certainly capable of reaching deep for a big performance. 3 STORM RUNNER will pick up Zac Purton in his second try in Class 5 but has yet to put up consistent Prime Burke Ratings numbers and I’m not sold on Purton’s presence over-correcting that pattern. I like our top choice to win outright.

      Race 3 | 1200M | Class 4

      Win – 14 CIRCUIT VICTORY

Notes: Britney Wong is making her second appearance in Sunday’s forecast, and I like the apprentice at a ten-pound handicap to make a surprise in the third race. 14 CIRCUIT VICTORY seemed to find his stride a couple races back, getting to the lead and hanging on with Wong on board for his first career win. He came back in Class 4 and had a shaky start, got bumped, cut his leg, and missed over this course by just a length. Now he’s back, carrying only 107 pounds and looking like he could be alone on the lead. This son of PER INCANTO is 11/1 on the Morning Line for one of Hong Kong’s better sprint trainers. I’m in, let’s watch Britney guide this gelding to the Winner’s Circle.

      Race 6 | 1400M | Group 3

      Win – 1 BEAUTY ETERNAL

      Exacta Box – 1 w/ 5

Notes: Backing Zac Purton in a Group Stakes race in Hong Kong is an easy sell, but this six-year-old gelding comes with a resume to put icing on the cake. Four of his last five runs have been at a mile where he has faded right around the 200M mark. Conveniently, on Sunday he gets the cut back to just 1400M where John Size has won three of six with this runner. His last run at seven furlongs was a two-length loss to international star KA YING RISING. This is a tough race with a deserving Morning Line favorite, but I can’t look past the 11/1 ML odds for BEAUTY ETERNAL. Let’s play to win and include in an Exacta.

      Race 7 | 1400M | Class 4

      Win – 1 COURIER ALADDIN

      Quinella Box – 1,2,12

Notes: This is my “bombs away” longshot race of the day. 3 DO YOUR PART is 9/5 on the Morning Line but is 1-for-8 this year and hasn’t sold me with his Prime Burke Ratings. Instead, I like a trio of big prices to make a mess of the race. 1 COURIER ALADDIN has roared twice after winning on his debut. He picks up Britney Wong at a ten-pound handicap for trainer Manfred Kan after being ridden by Zac Purton for his first three career races. I think the connections have high hopes for this gelding, and this could be the spot to get back into the Winner’s Circle at a huge price. We’ll combine our 13/1 ML top choice with a pair of others who are looking capable, and if we’re in line to cash it will be for a sizable stack.

      Race 10 | 1600M | Class 3

      Win/Place – 2 JUMBO LEGEND

Notes: It’s time for my shortest analysis of the day. 2 JUMBO LEGEND is 22/1 on the Morning Line and is far and away the top choice according to the Prime Burke Ratings. Those odds, my figures, it’s a match made in gambling heaven. Let ‘er rip.

        Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

        Prairie Meadows - Race #6
#5 Home Run Sam He chased and had to settle for being the distant runner-up at first asking, but he could easily sustain that kind of pressing run better this time with that experience behind him.
#1 Steely Eye He might get a dreamy kind of trip while tucked in at the fence while a couple quicker players cross over from wider draws. Wouldn't argue with you here.
#3 Ante Meridiem Worry that he's going to be a short kind of price on the board off the debut try, but that was a useful-looking effort while in the frame throughout. Obvious threat.
Race Summary Wonder if Home Run Sam might get just a tiny bit overlooked in here with Ante Meridiem likely to command some cash off the solid debut run. Think 'Sam might have more upside.
        Prairie Meadows - Race #7
#5 Actin' Up There isn't a ton of finishing/passing form lined up here, so I'm wondering if this one is able to get past some horses while turning back off an improved effort when trying local company for the first time. I can see it.
#4 The Wife Found Out The baseline form fits fine, but she just feels like the type that grinds at one pace late in all her starts, and that leaves her vulnerable to anyone more interested in reaching out for it late.
#1 She's a Jem She could work things out from the fence in a spot without a ton of other speed, so her brief chasing pace in a couple starts could be enough to keep her in the picture early -- and late.
Race Summary Actin' Up has some midrange price appeal in here, as she offered something a touch more energized in her local debut last out, and she might get past these late.
        Prairie Meadows - Race #9
#2 On a Hunch Third off the break today after an improved run last out, I think this guy's generally honest form stacks up nicely with this crew. I'd be fine at something like the ML price.
#3 Annual Budget Think one of these two will land this, but the price might be a bit better on the top choice. In the mix if he can fire fresh here.
#5 Amorosa Decent comeback effort when third in stakes company, and that should have him well-prepped for this second start back. Better lines would handle these.
Race Summary On a Hunch was sharp last time out and could be sitting on something even better today. He's still kind of lightly raced and hasn't put together a long campaign yet -- wonder how far his form arc can go...

I've got to go with GRAN CHICO. Displays formidable Speed Figures on average overall when measured up against the rest of this group of horses in this race. The speed figure of 65 from his latest race looks formidable in here. Is difficult not to consider given the company run in recently. MORE THAN EASY - The average class rating alone makes this entrant a solid contender. RED CHEEKS - Has been racing solidly and has among the most favorable speed in the race for today's distance. Arceo has him trained solidly to break promptly out of the gate.

                Prairie Meadows - Race #7 - Post: 6:34pm - Maiden Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $14,200 Class Rating: 54

                Rating:

                #5 ACTIN' UP (ML=10/1)
                #2 FOXY ZORRA (ML=2/1)
                #6 CLASSYCOWTOWNLADY (ML=3/1)

ACTIN' UP - You'll be generating money right and left by turning your gambling cash onto this jock/trainer combination. On board this horse on May 26th and Tohill is right back in the irons this time around. Ran a winning race May 26th, but just couldn't catch the victor. I really like that most recent effort on May 26th at Prairie Meadows where she ran second. This one has increased her speed figs in each of the last two races. That kind of progress is worth considering when its time to bet. FOXY ZORRA - Roman and Rosin perform well when they join forces. It's hard to beat a +113 ROI for a jock and trainer. I like to see fast morning blow outs. This filly's last one was very good. Second fastest of the day. Ran in the last race against a high class rated field at Oaklawn Park. The move to a lower class level should suit her well. CLASSYCOWTOWNLADY - The last time she tried this distance she got a fig good enough to win this race. This filly should be in tip-top shape, this far into her form cycle. The recent figure of 59 is the highest last race speed rating in the field. Have to forget about that last race on the grass. This filly should do better hitting the main track in this race.

                Vulnerable Contenders: #4 THE WIFE FOUND OUT (ML=7/2), #3 SOPHIE'S GIRL (ML=5/1), #7 CLEVER VICTORY (ML=8/1),

THE WIFE FOUND OUT - This filly finished outside the top 3 on May 23rd and wasn't close to winning in the last race either. Don't feel this less than sharp equine will make an impact in today's event. That last speed figure was quite unimpressive when compared with today's class rating. SOPHIE'S GIRL - The third place finish in the last event was not the best. CLEVER VICTORY - Doubtful for this one to make an impact with no recent success in a sprint clash.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - CLASSYCOWTOWNLADY - I'm wagering on this one today. A softer field is going to make a big difference. Will be competitive today.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: #5 ACTIN' UP is going to be the play if we are getting 7/2 or better

                  Louisiana Downs - Race #7 - Post: 6:53pm - Claiming - 8.0 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $10,000 Class Rating: 79

                  Rating:

                  #2 DEROUTANTE (ML=8/1)
                  #5 C. C. HARBOR (ML=3/1)

DEROUTANTE - Have to give this horse a long hard look. In recent races, has posted the best Equibase speed figures on the turf at this distance. C. C. HARBOR - In my opinion, you need 'class' to be successful on the turf. This one has the highest average class rating in the field. That 75 fig this mare earned in her last clash tells me she's a key player today. This mare is number one in (EPS) earnings per start. Take a long look at this animal in the post parade.

                  Vulnerable Contenders: #7 CLEARLY CREEPS (ML=5/2), #6 GIRLS GOT GAME (ML=5/1), #3 CHAPELLETE (ML=6/1),

CLEARLY CREEPS - Difficult to put your dough on the win end of any horse that finishes second and third as frequently as this participant does. Not likely that the speed rating she notched on June 10th will be good enough in this event. GIRLS GOT GAME - This vulnerable equine hasn't been close to the winner at the finish line recently. CHAPELLETE - This filly showed very liitle last time out.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #2 DEROUTANTE to win if we can get at least 2/1 odds
                  EXACTA WAGERS: Box [2,5]
                  TRIFECTA WAGERS: None

                    RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                    # 12 TONIGHT 10/1
                    # 1 CURIOUS SOUL 15/1
                    # 11 K PAZ 15/1
I've got to go with TONIGHT especially at 10/1. Will almost certainly compete solidly in the early speed battle which bodes well with this group. CURIOUS SOUL - Bettors get an edge when playing this handler in a turf sprint race.
