Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Late Pick 4 Analysis

    June 23, 2025 | By Al Cimaglia

    XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Yonkers Raceway has a 10-race card. The 0.50 Pick 5, has a double carryover of $22,198.09, it starts in Race 5 and has a $75,000 guaranteed pool. The $2.00 Late Pick 4 rolls in Race 7, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 7 (8:45 PM EDT)

1-Finvarra A (7/2)-Has been flat the last couple of starts against the Invites. But drops and draws the rail and that could be the winning difference. George Brennan may get on the engine, but if not should be no worse than in the pocket against this kind.
7-Heza Charttopper A (7/5)-Steps up, draws outside and both may not matter. Has strung together wins versus the Invites so wont blush at the competition, and has won 9 of 16 on the Hilltop. Jason Bartlett will be blasting out, and could double up with a top of the stack trip.

    Race 8 (9:05 PM EDT)

2-Desperate Man (2-1)-Raced big in the Battle of Lake Erie but got beat by the pocket horse who tripped out from the 2-hole. This warrior did all the heavy lifting last time into hot fractions and tonight should get control early on and not look back.

    Race 9 (9:25 PM EDT)

1-All Alone (9/5)-Ships back from Philly after a pair of dull efforts which came after a lame scratch at YR. So there are question marks but if healthy this is a soft spot, beat similar here on 3-10. Could have his way with this crew if dialed on high.
3-Whats Stanley Got A (7/2)-Ships back from PcD, after an ever effort on a good track. Stanley isn’t what he was last year but has been in the mix against better. Beat this kind at the end of March at Yonkers from the 8-hole on a sloppy track and beat better here in April from post 7. So, best to respect chances tonight.

    Race 10 (9:45 PM EDT)

1-Manferno (6/5)-Made his YR debut a winning and went off at 5-1 against this kind. Now comes right back, draws the rail, and will probably be an odds-on chalk. Will offer no value and faces 5 from last week's crew.
7-Frequent Image (6-1)-Blasted off the gate at 45-1 and faded to finish a badly beaten 8th. That was the 1st start for the Engblom barn, and the mission last week may have been to go as fast as long as you can. Dops to the level of its last win which came only 2 back. Bartlett gets the call and will look for a strong attempt to get back to winning ways.

    $2 Late Pick 4

    1,7/2/1,3/1,7
    Total Bet=$16

      Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

      Thistledown - Race #3
#1 Finally Friday There is only a little bit of pace lined up in here on the other end of the book, and this one is probably quick enough to be an early force from the fence while stretching out. Think he's fun to take a look at, especially if he's offering some kind of upper-single-digit price.
#3 Bolt's Treasure He has been competitive enough to find the exacta against similar in recent starts, but he was also absolutely no threat to the winner in either of them at 1/5 and 2/1 on the board. You can have him if the price is short.
#2 Crecencio He's still a question mark around two turns, but his only route try so far came on the lawn -- expecting that he can stay this trip. One of the ones.
Race Summary Finally Friday has a lot of appeal for me in here today while getting around two turns in a spot where he should be able to get a good run of things while in the frame throughout.
      Thistledown - Race #4
#2 Dreaming of Kona There are a couple of interesting back tries on his page, and he has remained sort of a very borderline minor stakes type. Better stuff can do.
#1 Carambaso Inside pace has some dangerous potential on his better days, and he's a real threat to shake free in a race that only has one other kind of serious pace type drawn far outside.
#3 Express Cruiser Honest finisher got over the top last out but typically settles for a too-late underneath share. Would benefit from an early battle from the bookends.
Race Summary Dreaming of Kona would be plenty interesting at anything like the 9/2 ML offering, as he should find a good trip tracking the inside pace and might like this local crew.
      Thistledown - Race #8
#9 Kelley Jean Not sure what you're supposed to do here, but I'm going to bite. Outside pace should be able to lead/attack from the start here, and she was second in both of her career tries for a tag. She has turned in two bad fade jobs in her last pair, but I still wonder if she's going to hammer these.
#1 Peekaboo Mom She can show a bit of pace, too, after waking up a little bit last time out, but I'm not sure she's winning any early battle with the top choice and then finding enough to hang late. Forward players push each other the whole way and stay?
#4 Red Seven Positional pace chased the top choice and stopped in that last one, too, and she has not proven effective at passing horses in previous races. Baseline form fits, but I don't see her getting the right race flow.
Race Summary Kelley Jean might air here -- she's the sharpest pace and drawn perfectly to control things from the start.

        Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

        Parx - Race #1
#3 MOON FLEET (2-1) Towers over field, picks up 5 pounds off claim, today’s Best Bet.
#4 SHE CAN SCAT (4-1) Gave way chasing 5-2 winner, lures Sanchez for third start of cycle.
#5 MISS CASELLA (9-2) Has done the least wrong in field that is a combined 7-for-103.
Race Summary MOON FLEET rallied for two seconds and a third in her last three sprints, equaling or bettering the top three speed figures in the field this year. She ‘closed strongly’ from far back at 6F but was no threat to runaway favorite Imperio Azteca, who won her third in a row. She finished ahead of Royal Upstart, who won a $7,500 claimer by 9-3/4 lengths next out. Don’t expect 2-to-1 but a flat win bet should get your day started on a winning note.
        Parx - Race #5
#7 BRINDISI (4-1) Wide trips and willing in last three starts in a 21-day span, good fit on best.
#5 IRISH HONOR (9-2) Second for $10k in seasonal debut after voided claim nine months prior.
#2 HARLEY’S CHARLY (3-1) Ran third from on and off pace recently, has good Parx record.
Race Summary Somebody has to win from among eight entrants with a combined 37/0-3-5 record this year. BRINDISI stands a good chance, rallying 6-wide in the stretch at 6F two back as the beaten favorite against My Devil’s Child (61/9-13-7, $224k). He made up 10 lengths in a higher-tagged follow-up at one mile to finish fourth. Bet to win and place and play a 5,7/2, 5, 7/ALL trifecta.
        Parx - Race #6
#1 SILENT MODE (8-1) In good form, shorter distance could be the winning answer.
#4 ENFORCER (5-1) Earned top speed figure in near miss at this level two starts ago.
#5 LUCKY DUDE (9-2) Piling up the checks but not the wins, enters top claim barn.
Race Summary SILENT MODE raced close up for this far but settled for minor awards in three consecutive route races. He steps up off the claim but is worth a price shot in his improved form. Bet to win and place and play a 1-4-5 exacta box.

Race 1 - Maiden Claiming - 8.0f on the Turf. Purse: $35360 Class Rating: 79

IND - R4 - FOR MAIDENS, THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD. THREE YEAR OLDS, 120 LBS.; OLDER, 124 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $32,000. IF THIS RACE IS TAKEN OFF THE TURF, IT WILL BE RUN AT 1 MILE AND 70 YARDS ON THE MAIN TRACK.
              RECOMMENDED CHOICES
              # 4 ALPHA OMEGA 8/5
              # 10 NA PALI JOE 8/1
              # 9 BRAVITAS 15/1
I lean toward ALPHA OMEGA here. Pedroza will probably be able to get this gelding to break out early for this race. Is a key contender - given the 88 speed rating from his most recent race. Has a very solid shot in this contest if you like back class. NA PALI JOE - Correas has this gelding running well and is a competitive choice based on the very good Equibase Speed Figs garnered in route races lately. Last time out, this gelding faced a rougher crew. BRAVITAS - This selection will feel the med change - with second time Lasix today. He should have a strong outing versus this softer lot.

                Thistledown - Race #3 - Post: 1:50pm - Maiden Special - 8.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $26,400 Class Rating: 73

                Rating:

                #6 IT'S LAST CALL (ML=8/1)
                #4 Z BOSS (ML=6/1)

IT'S LAST CALL - I expect this horse to shock some racing fans this time out. Z BOSS - Rone has this gelding placed in the perfect race.

                Vulnerable Contenders: #3 BOLT'S TREASURE (ML=6/5), #2 CRECENCIO (ML=5/2), #5 CRABTREE (ML=9/2),

BOLT'S TREASURE - You should normally gamble against chalk that haven't raced or show no activity in the morning over the last three weeks. CRECENCIO - Pedestrian speed figure last out at Thistledown at 5 1/2 furlongs. Don't think this vulnerable equine will improve too much in today's event. CRABTREE - Tough to like the downward spiraling flow (66/61/49) of speed ratings. The speed figure in the last race doesn't fit very well in this race when I look at the Equibase class figure of today's contest. Mark this thoroughbred as a likely underlay.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: #6 IT'S LAST CALL is the play if we get odds of 5/2 or better

                  Parx Racing - Race #2 - Post: 1:07pm - SO - 7.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $26,000 Class Rating: 68

                  Rating:

                  #4 TWIST HER (ML=5/1)
                  #3 GREYHOUND STATION (ML=5/1)

TWIST HER - The last time she tried this distance she got a fig good enough to win this race. Williams comes to get aboard after getting to know the mare in the last contest. Finished ahead of today's favorite last time out at Parx Racing. Can do the same again in this field. Last time out, finished fifth on a track listed as good at Parx Racing. Should do better in this event. GREYHOUND STATION - This jock and trainer have a profitable return on investment when they team up. Jockey hops back aboard after getting to know the fine animal by riding last time out. That's always a good sign. This thoroughbred has increased her Equibase speed figures in each of the last 2 races. That kind of progress is worth considering when its time to bet.

                  Vulnerable Contenders: #2 GOLDEN PHILLY (ML=2/1), #5 SHUDABEENACOWGIRL (ML=3/1), #1 LERETHA (ML=4/1),

GOLDEN PHILLY - This chalk horse ran on May 21st and hasn't had a work since. Mediocre speed rating in the last race at Parx Racing at 1 mile. Don't believe this runner will improve too much in today's race. SHUDABEENACOWGIRL - Equibase speed figures of 62/57/49 are headed on a downward course. Should have at least hit the board in the last couple of months in a sprint clash to be any kind of value at modest odds in a sprint. Won't be easy for this horse to beat this bunch off of that last speed figure. Unlikely to improve enough to run a figure close enough to today's class rating, so put her on the questionable contenders list. Tough to put your cash on the win end of any thoroughbred that finishes second and third as frequently as this horse does. LERETHA - I can't play this confirmed non-winner. Gets the task fulfilled from time to time. Common speed rating last race out at Parx Racing at 1 mile. Don't believe this runner will improve too much today.

GUEST COMMENTARY: The Brain - TWIST HER - Racing against a similar field as last out. I believe she'll now be settled in at this level and should perform well in this race in today's race.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #4 TWIST HER to win if you can get at least 2/1 odds
                  EXACTA WAGERS: Box [3,4]

                    RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                    # 3 CAROOM 6/1
                    # 6 VALLEY VICTORY 15/1
                    # 5 BLUE MAX 5/2
I think CAROOM is a very good choice. He has been running solidly and the speed figures are among the best in this group. Garnered a very good Equibase Speed Figure last time out. With a nice Equibase class rating average of 93, has one of the best class advantages in this field. BLUE MAX - Earnings per start at the distance/surface is a good handicapping key. This entrant ranks at the top in this field of horses. Win percentage under similar conditions may be the key for this gelding.
