Chicago Blackhawks at San Jose Sharks (-140, 5.5)

Making too much of Chicago’s 9-2 blowout loss to Edmonton over the weekend is probably a mistake. Then again, not making enough of it would also be a problem.

A team with Chicago’s talent should never get run out of the rink like they did in Edmonton and it was the way the Blackhawks let it happen. Sure, Dan Carcillo mixed it up a bit in the third period and there were a few shoving matches, but Chicago should have been fit to be tied.

Maybe they had other things on the mind – like the trip to Vegas the club embarked on after getting outscored 14-4 in Alberta. What’s most concerning is this is the part of the schedule Chicago should be banking points.

“We haven’t had a super difficult schedule as far as teams,” Sean O'Donnell told reporters. “I’m hoping these two losses kind of wake us up a little bit. It’s good to get away.”

We’ll believe it when we see it.

      Pick: San Jose

Winnipeg Jets at Washington Capitals (-200, 5.5)

Things are just getting nasty in Washington and Bruce Boudreau had better get his club going before it’s too late.

Not that he isn’t trying. Washington’s bench boss banished Alex Semin to the press box in Monday’s 4-3 over Phoenix and has publicly sparred with struggling superstar Alex Ovechkin.

Monday’s win was just Washington’s second in eight games and critics continue to blast the club for its sloppy play. Granted a win is two points no matter how you slice it, but it wasn’t an overly impressive victory.

“We know one win doesn’t make up for what we’ve been going through the last couple weeks, but it definitely lightens the room up,” Mike Knuble told reporters. “It’s nice to go home not feeling so down.”

The Caps have been a lot better at home (7-1-1), but they don’t deserve this type of chalk. Jump on the dog or play the over.

      Pick: Over

College funds: Wednesday's best NCAAB bets

Virginia Tech Hokies at Syracuse Orange (-8, N/A)

Amid all the controversy surrounding the investigation of Bernie Fine, the Syracuse Orange just keep doing their thing as they get ready for the NIT semifinal.

For the record, coach Jim Boeheim reiterated his support for Fine in the sexual assault investigation.

“I’ve been friends for 50 years with Coach Fine, and that buys a lot of loyalty to me,” Boeheim told reporters. “Our program will be fine. It’s been pretty good for 36 years. We’ve been through a lot of different things. We’ll get through it.”

Meanwhile, Syracuse is perfect straight up and against the number heading into Wednesday’s date Virginia Tech and the Hokies could have a tough time dealing with the Orange’s balanced attack. James Southerland, Dion Waiters and Kris Joseph are all scoring better than 13 points per game.

Plus, Syracuse is holding its opposition to 34.7 percent shooting from the floor.

        Pick: Orange

San Diego State Aztecs at Arizona Wildcats (-7, N/A)

To the casual sports fan, Arizona’s 4-1 straight up start to the season looks pretty good. College hoops bettors know better.

The Wildcats are only 1-4 against the spread and this is already shaping up to be a trying season for coach Sean Miller. Arizona suspended 6-foot-8, 235-pound freshman Sidiki Johnson Tuesday for violating a team policy.

However, the young Wildcats did gain some valuable experience in New York, where they dropped a 67-57 decision to Mississippi State in the 2K Championship game as 5.5-point favorites.

"We played against a lot of different styles," Miller told reporters. "Duquesne pressed. We saw a lot of fast pace. St. John's zoned, but was fast-paced. Mississippi State played man-to-man, but it was at a very slow tempo and we didn't handle it well."

San Diego State is another young club struggling against the number but we think they'll give Arizona a good run.

        Pick: Aztecs
