    Penn National All-Turf Pick 4 | Friday, June 27

    June 27, 2025 | By Frank Carulli

    PENN NATIONAL ALL-TURF PICK 4
    Friday, June 27, 2025

Mother Nature disrupted the scheduled start of the Grade 3 Penn Mile twice this month, but the show that includes an All-Turf stakes Pick 4 is set to go again this Friday, June 27, at Penn National. Weather permitting, here’s a closer look at the 50-cent wager that starts with two 12-horse fields:

PEN 3rd race (6:00 p.m. EST) -- The $75,000 Lyphard Stakes for Pennsylvania-bred fillies and mares is loaded with speed, so the Pick 4 hopes will rest on the two most proven grass routers in the field. PRINCESS JAVONCIA, a $250k turf earner, challenged for the lead on the final turn but tired in mid-stretch in her seasonal debut at this distance at Laurel Park. The performance was enhanced when race winner Livelovenlaughter came back to repeat in the 6F Jameela Stakes. She has post 11 to deal with but lures Eclipse Award-winning jockey Flavien Prat to ride. LADY OUTOFTHE BLUE, part of an uncouple three-horse entry for trainer Michael Matz, made a last-to-second rally in last year’s Lyphard, missing in a photo finish. She later won a restricted stakes on a ‘yielding’ Penn National lawn at this distance and finished third in a crowded allowance at Laurel Park behind turf tigress Paper Mansion (12-16 on turf).

PEN 4th race (6:35 p.m. EST) -- Don’t sleep on 20-1 rail-sitter TREVESSO, my top pick in the $75,000 Alphabet Soup Handicap. He made an eye-catching, last-to-first move when he won a PA-bred turf stakes at Parx a year ago, projects a similar type of trip in here and hails from a hot barn off a series of good 5F workouts. But still go deep in this leg of the Pick 4. Locally-based FIERCE AND STRONG won five of his last 10 starts at various venues and distances and his tactical speed comes in handy in this speed-laden field. He rallied to win a 2X allowance sprint two weeks before this race was originally carded May 30. EFF THIRTY FIVE has four allowance wins and three losses by a neck in the last year. He has the right running style but will be an underlay with Irad Ortiz Jr. aboard for trainer Brittany Russell. MOVISITOR is a longshot worth using. He was 0-4 on turf early in her career, with one of three graded stakes setbacks coming in the 2023 Penn Mile. But he is a different horse since Marya Montoya took over the training, with four wire-to-wire allowance victories by a combined 16 lengths with an average 90 Beyer.

PEN 5th race (7:10 p.m. EST) -- LAURELIN is perfect in three starts, won her second one-mile stakes race off an eight-month layoff and could control the pace from her outside post in a field that lacks speed. She is the top play $150,000 Penn Oaks. Trainer Chad Brown looks to enhance his 23-percent ‘repeat’ rate with uncoupled Maiden Special Weight turf route winners ACCENT and MIDWAY MEMORIES.

PEN 6th race (7:45 p.m. EST) -- ZULU KINGDOM collared and edged past clear pace-setter MI BAGO in the Grade 1 American Turf Stakes at 1-1/16 miles on Kentucky Derby day. But the Churchill Downs turf clearly favored closers that day, a sign that the rematch could go down to the wire in the Grade 3 Penn Mile.

    Suggested 50-Cent Ticket
    PEN 3rd Race: 8, 11
    PEN 4th Race: 1, 3, 4, 9
    PEN 5th Race: 1, 3, 6, 9
    PEN 6th Race: 4, 7
    Cost: $32

      Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

      Churchill Downs - Race #8
#6 L. A. Woman There are a couple other potential forward players lined up outside of her, but not a ton of serious early burn, and she might find herself in a perfect spot heading into the far turn. Lots to like.
#7 Islander She's another who can be in range early here after a good effort with similar last time out. She's not always super reliable in the lane, though, so my enthusiasm is tempered just a bit.
#4 Feeling Beachy Yet another with some tactical speed to pick a spot early on, and she has also been competitive with this kind of company in her last two starts. One of the ones.
Race Summary L. A. Woman has knocked on the door in a couple tries against allowance company like this, and I love that she fired fresh off that long layoff last out. If that didn't take too much out of her off the bench, she's scary today with any upside.
      Churchill Downs - Race #10
#7 Little Prankster Was she flat because of the long layoff or the turf last time out? Or both? Guessing she's not getting all the way back to that sharp 2023 form, but she has some reasonable upside today going second off that long break and getting back on the dirt.
#1 Marmalade Skye Positional pace is quick enough to find a good spot from the fence, but there are a few other pressing types who could be looking for a similar kind of trip here. In the mix.
#2 Liuzza She is probably just a little bit light overall for this group, but her form has been pretty reliable in recent starts -- and now she'll go first off the claim while rising for the new team. Maybe for a piece at a price.
Race Summary Interested to see what kind of price Little Prankster offers here -- she has some pretty serious questions to answer after the flat comeback run, but something like that 9/2 ML price would be plenty appealing for me to give her the benefit of the doubt on the move back to the dirt.
      Churchill Downs - Race #11
#7 Copp He'll need to fire fresh, but his two-back run was pretty sharp when racing around one turn, and the cutback here could work in his favor after he ran at one pace in that route try last out. Sign me up at anything like the 6/1 ML price.
#11 Evan on Earth He's an obvious player here with some form that makes him tough from a good spying draw, but the worry for me is again going to be the fact that he has given away ground in the stretch call of all seven races on his page. He can win this, but he's also vulnerable to getting picked up late after looking like a winner.
#1 Flick He needed cheaper for his best so far, but he's moving in the right direction, and I think he earned a shot on the rise after that run.
Race Summary Copp and Evan on Earth look like the right two, but I'm more interested in the way Copp could be finishing late here with form from Evan that I don't entirely trust in the final yards.

        Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

        Woodbine - Race #2
#5 DROGON (5-2) May need only to run to recent workouts to win at first asking.
#2 HAPPY QUAD (2-1) Bet late to favoritism, bumped out to 6-path by 25-1 winner, no kick in stretch.
#4 KNOWING (7-2) Split rivals late, ran second to 2-to-5 winner in same spot in seasonal debut.
Race Summary DROGON is working forwardly for his debut, a good sign considering his sire, Reload, produced champion Canadian sprinter Patches O’Houlihan. He gets Lasix, gets leading jockey Pietro Moran and meets six rivals who are a combined 0-for-41. Bet to win and place and play 5-2 and 5-4 exactas.
        Woodbine - Race #3
#2 JO JAGR (20-1) Not impossible in this field if he starts in the same zip code.
#3 HIGHLAND ROCKY (6-1) Finished in money in last four long sprints before form tailspinned.
#5 DIVA’S GHOST (8-5) Returns as gelding, takes class plunge, lost by 43 total lengths in four starts.
Race Summary JO JAGR spotted the field a city block after he dwelt at the start in his 6F debut, perhaps a reflection of his sloooow workouts. But he finished with some interest while widest in the stretch, galloped out well and gets an extra furlong to run today. Can’t get excited about any of the favorites, so make a longshot win and place bet.
        Woodbine - Race #4
#7 HARPER CITY (5-2) Dueled, ran behind next-out 1-2-3 finishers, gets in light from good post.
#5 BACK RIVER (9-5) Finished in money twice at this level recently, the one to beat.
#3 SMART ASHLEY (8-1) Winless long time, should be running late in first start this year.
Race Summary HARPER CITY ‘stubbornly’ dueled inside of next-out winner Celentano before a pair of follow-up 1-2 finishers passed by both of them in the same spot. He sheds 6 pounds, can track likely pace setter GOLDEN TEST from an outside post and get the jump on probable favorite BACK RIVER. Bet to win and place and play 7-3 and 7-5 exactas.

I have to support CONTRABBANDA here. Must be considered - I like the figs from the last contest. Always hard to beat Davis and Cabrera working together, winning 15 percent of their races. PLATINUM DIVA - Put up a respectable speed rating last time out. Has a solid shot here if you like back class. ZITI (FR) - Has performed soundly recently in route races, posting a nifty 84 avg speed figure. Going in a turf route race gives this filly a decent shot.

                Rating:

                #1 I'M GITTIN THERE (ML=2/1)

I'M GITTIN THERE - I think Delaware Park players know a good thing when they see the rider/trainer twosome of Chuan and Ness. Their win percent together has been great. Forgive the out of the money finish on the off track last time around the track. On a non-sloppy track, has a chance right here. Earnings per race is something that I feel can be a crucial handicapping aspect. This thoroughbred is ranked number one in this field.

                Vulnerable Contenders: #2 VIKING QUEEN (ML=8/5), #5 SIMMERING (ML=9/2), #3 MITI FAST FLOWER (ML=6/1),

VIKING QUEEN - You always believe this equine has a shot to win, but she falls short frequently. Didn't show much last time out of the box. Probably won't make an impact in today's race. This mare earned a speed figure in her last race which probably isn't good enough in today's event. SIMMERING - Showed very little in the last race. Really can't expect any improvement today. You think this animal is going to finish first just because she's always close. Just doesn't get the job done regularly. MITI FAST FLOWER - The speed rating in the last race doesn't fit very well in this race when I look at the class rating of today's race. Mark this mount as a possibly overvalued equine.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Putting our cash on #1 I'M GITTIN THERE to win. Have to have odds of at least 1/1 or better though

                  # 3 WYNSTON 8/1
                  # 7 BP CATCHING COWGIRLS 3/1
EFFORTLESS FAVORITE is my choice. Should keep the good string of finishes intact today. Is a solid contender based on figures earned lately under today's conditions. He has been racing strongly as of late while recording strong Equibase Speed Figures. WYNSTON - He looks solid in this slot and I expect will be on the front end or close at the halfway point. Had one of the top speed figs of this field in his last competition. BP CATCHING COWGIRLS - Has to be considered for this race if only for the formidable Equibase Speed Fig put up in the last race. Could provide positive returns based on decent recent Equibase Speed Figures with an average of 72.

                    #5 MR ON HIGH (ML=10/1)
                    #3 SPEEDY ALEX (ML=5/1)

HEAD OF THE CLASS - Trainer Magee moves this one down the class scale to face a less competitive field. Look for a strong race given this drop. Another way to identify class is earnings per race. This mount has the highest in the bunch. I think he'll be close at the finish. MR ON HIGH - Trainer Mancilla moves this horse to a lower level to face a weaker level today. Look for a sharp performance in here. Rosado and Mancilla teamed up together are a railbird's friend. This horse didn't run well on a track listed as good in his last start at Laurel. You probably should discount that effort. SPEEDY ALEX - This gelding is in superb condition right now. Ended up second in the last race and comes back promptly. Trainer, Corrales, has been deliberate with this gelding off the layoff. Look for a solid effort today. 43-48-60 are last 3 speed figs. Improving each time out is something he should do again in this event.

Vulnerable Contenders: #2 ONE TRUE DUDE (ML=7/2), #6 DAD JOKE (ML=4/1), #9 BREEZING UP (ML=6/1),

ONE TRUE DUDE - Not likely that this horse will finish better than he did last time out when finishing eighth. Somewhat easily forgotten speed figure last time around the track at Laurel at 1 mile. Don't feel this less than sharp equine will improve too much in today's race. DAD JOKE - Awfully tough to bet on this runner when he hasn't been showing any signs of readiness lately. BREEZING UP - This gelding hasn't had any recent accomplishments in sprint affairs. No picnic to play him in this contest.
