Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Late Pick 4 Analysis

    June 30, 2025 | By Al Cimaglia

    XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Yonkers Raceway has an 11-race card. The $1.00 Pick 5 begins in Race 5 and has a $10,000 guaranteed pool. The $2.00 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 8, and the sequence will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 8 (9:05 PM EDT)

4-Chase H Hanover (5/2)-Comes back to town after facing some tough foes. Had no shot from post 7 in the last start at Nfld in the Battle of Lake Erie. Before then was very good at Yonkers over a 2-month span and has been off since 6-7. Will assume all systems are go as Jason Bartlett lands here and he doesn’t steer often for the Cory Stratton barn. Has the gate speed to take control and could be difficult to catch down the lane.
7-Desperate Man (3-1)-The post draw doesn’t help but the only time this veteran has missed hitting the board at Yonkers in 25 races is when it broke stride which happened once. Matt Kakaley will move early on and should have the best chance of rolling by Chase Hanover.

    Race 9 (9:25 PM EDT)

1-Heza Charttopper A (6/5)-Dropped to a soft spot and easily handled the last group going gate to wire from post 5. Steps up but draws the rail and has beaten better recently. Will be an odds-on choice and this race will need to go through the chalk.
6-Racing Rampage (9/2)-Will look for a square price and land here with the Alexander trainee who is in fine form. Has the racing style needed for success in this affair. Should be in good position off the gate to find some cover and if the favorite doesn’t have its fastball, backers could be well compensated.

    Race 10 (9:45 PM EDT)

2-The Bigboss A (5/2)-Makes its 4th start in the US, has been in the hunt in 2 of the 3 and left from the 8-hole against tougher in the race in between. Raced better than the line looked last time. Has been off since 6-10 and will assume all systems are go.
3-Ourmatemenko N (4-1)-Gets both class and post relief. Has been too far behind in most races to get a win, although finishes well. This is spot to race closer to the leader early in the mile and may finally cash the top check at YR
    (6-0-1-3).

    Race 11 (10:05 PM EDT)

2-I'm The Prince (5-1)-In the last 5 races Prince has drawn post 7 three times and post 8 once. Did capture a win in the other start leaving from post 4. George Brennan should be racing near the leaders off the gate and could roll by again down the lane.
4-Frequent Image (9/5)-Drops to the level of its last win in the 2nd start for the Engblom barn. The plan is not a top secret. Bartlett will have the pedal down and play catch me if you can.

    $2 Late Pick 4

    4,7/1,6/2,3/2,4
    Total Bet=$32

      Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

Presque Isle Downs - Race #5
#1 Mor Spring Spirit Speed draws the fence to take a chance against this tougher group off the claim, and his local form is reliable enough to think he might be able to hold off the guy on the outside.
#6 Old Town Road Think it's a two-horse race in this one, and I wouldn't argue too hard with anyone choosing to land here. Price just might be a bit better up top.
#5 General Winston He could be sitting in an OK spying spot while in touch with the top pair, but he'll need a top effort while trying a tougher crew today.
Race Summary Mor Spring Spirit and Old Town Road should get the run of this one -- hoping Mor Spring Spirit can use his early pace edge to avoid getting hounded every step from the start.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #7
#1 Good Directions Think he's worth a long look in here -- he's capable of something a little bit better than that last one, and the guy who ran second in that one was the winner of this race last year, so he probably classes up OK while getting back in with 3-year-old friends.
#7 Golden Afternoon Recent form isn't much, but it has all come against much better graded-stakes company, and he draws well to let the slightly more committed forward players sort things out early.
#4 Big Vince Winner of his last landed another stakes win Saturday, but this one seems to have only one gear and could be meeting a bit of competitive pace.
Race Summary Good Directions has some upside here in the third start back, and he caught a good group of older horses in that last one, including the winner of last year's edition of this race. Makes plenty of sense here to me.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #8
#9 Brand New Dance Dropper cuts back after showing a little tracking pace going long, and that could translate into an OK finishing run while turning back against a cheaper bunch? I don't know, but I think you're supposed to look beyond a couple of the familiar faces at this level.
#6 Rock Tune Tough to trust her after so many starts, but she's fairly reliable and fits well enough with her better races. Chance, but I'm not sure how to land here with any true enthusiasm.
#2 Hope She Comes She's in the same boat as the last one -- the baseline stuff is honest enough for a horse at this level and might do the job with the right group on the right day, but I don't really trust her to do it today. But she could...
Race Summary Felt like a tough race on paper to me -- a lot of established form that theoretically is good enough to win a race at this level, but full of horses who still can't manage to do it. Brand New Dance is a fresh face here and might offer a little late interest. Maybe #11 Mrs. Manicotti? But I bet she takes too much cash.

        Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

        Parx - Race #1
#5 DOS DE OROS (4-1) Often in money, seldom wins, could upgrade after good try for new barn.
#8 BULLET BREEZE (3-1) Runner-up twice in last four starts, met repeat winners in the other two.
#6 TAKEMETOTHEMOON (7-2) Can make maximum use of his speed but has to carry it farther.
Race Summary DOS DE OROS earned the top speed figure in the field this year with a late-running, photo-finish setback going a route of ground. He returns to his claim level and could be in prime stalking range in a field that lacks quality speed. Bet to win and place and play a 5/6, 8/ALL trifecta.
        Parx - Race #6
#9 SILENT MODE (5-1) In good form, shorter distance could be the winning answer.
#5 LUCKY DUDE (4-1) Piling up the checks but not the wins, enters top claim barn.
#3 CLANCY O’TOOLE (8-1) Frist or second in 7 of 16 starts at Parx, including near miss last out.
Race Summary SILENT MODE raced close up for this far but settled for minor awards in three consecutive route races. He steps up off the claim but is worth a price shot in his improved form. Bet to win and place and play a 3-5-9 exacta box.
        Parx - Race #7
#9 BRINDISI (9-2) Wide trips and willing in last three starts in a 21-day span, good fit on best.
#3 MODERN MIDAS (10-1) Chased fast pace and remained third throughout in long sprint.
#7 HARLEY’S CHARLY (4-1) Ran third from on and off pace recently, has good Parx record.
Race Summary Somebody has to win from among nine entrants with a combined 43/0-1-6 record this year. BRINDISI stands a good chance, rallying 6-wide in the stretch at 6F two back as the beaten favorite against My Devil’s Child (61/9-13-7, $224k). He made up 10 lengths in a higher-tagged follow-up at one mile to finish fourth. Bet to win and place and play a 3-7-9 exacta box.

Race 8 - Maiden Claiming - 5.5f on the Dirt. Purse: $13000 Class Rating: 64

FOR MAIDENS, FILLIES AND MARES THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD. THREE YEAR OLDS, 120 LBS.; OLDER, 125 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $7,500.

              # 3 NUN GIMEL HAY PO 6/1
              # 1 DRINK DEEPLY 7/2
ROCK TUNE looks competitive to best this field. With a formidable 67 Equibase Speed Fig last time out, will unquestionably be a factor in this contest. Reason to like this filly as she has in the irons one of the best jocks using winning percentages over the last month. NUN GIMEL HAY PO - Potts and Villagomez have a strong win percent together. Ran a sharp last race. DRINK DEEPLY - She has quite good class ratings, averaging 69, and has to be given a chance in this event. Could provide positive profits based on quite good recent speed figs with an average of 51.

                # 6 DRIVE THRU 10/1
ASLEEP AT EIGHT is tough to overlook as the bet in here. Could provide positive returns based on solid recent Equibase Speed Figures with an average of 56. Should be considered a solid contender on earnings per start at the distance/surface alone. Facing a much easier lot than last time out. DRIVE THRU - Win percentage with this jockey and trainer combo - 20 percent - strong. Dediego's ROI over the last 30 days automatically makes this racer a strong contender.

Handicapped by The Turf Club Analysts

                  PURCHASE

                  Mountaineer Park - Race #1 - Post: 7:00pm - Allowance - 7.5 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $18,000 Class Rating: 66

                  Rating:

                  #5 ABRAMS (ML=5/1)
                  #6 Z DANCER (ML=4/1)
                  #7 KAKAO (ML=9/2)

ABRAMS - Of all the entrants in today's race only this gelding has won on this turf course. This gelding has a ton of ability on the turf. Could be long gone by the time they come out of the near turn. Z DANCER - Last out, this one was in a race at Mountaineer Park in a race with a class rating of 82. Dropping significantly in class figure this time around puts him in a solid position in this field. Jockey hops back on board after getting to know the magnificent animal by riding last race out. That's always a helpful angle. This horse picks up a lot of money per race around the track. I believe he can add to the lifetime earnings right here. KAKAO - When Vazquez gives Negron a leg up on any horse, you know full well that with their winning pct you have at worst a fighting chance. Trainer Vazquez moves this animal down in class ranks to face weaker company. Look for a good performance at this level. This colt is the longer price of the 'split' entry from the barn of Vazquez. I think this colt is ready to run a good one. He's had enough races around the track since the vacation and should be fit.

                  Vulnerable Contenders: #1 LORD DONEGAL (ML=5/2), #8 IN EFFECT (ML=8/1), #2 FINANCIAL WHIZ (ML=8/1),

LORD DONEGAL - The Brain always tells me to keep away from ponies in short distance events that haven't hit the board in short distance races recently. Can't play this morning-line favorite off the extended vacation. 5/2 is too short of a price to take on most any thoroughbred that has run poorly in back to back outings. IN EFFECT - Can't play this less than sharp equine in today's sprint of 7 1/2 furlongs. Hasn't even hit the board in a sprint affair recently. Not probable that this animal will finish better than he did last out when placing fourth. FINANCIAL WHIZ - This horse hasn't had even one blow out after running so well on June 9th.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - ABRAMS - I'm making a wager on this gelding. I love to bet on a pony on the quick turnaround.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Putting our cash on #5 ABRAMS to win. Have to have odds of at least 5/2 or better though
                  EXACTA WAGERS: 5 with [6,7]
TRIFECTA WAGERS: Box [5,6,7] Total Cost: $6
                  SUPERFECTA WAGERS: [5,6,7] with [5,6,7] with [2,3,5,6,7] with [2,3,5,6,7] Total Cost: $36

                    Louisiana Downs - Race #4 - Post: 5:29pm - Claiming - 6.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $9,000 Class Rating: 71

                    Rating:

                    #5 CASHMERE BABY (ML=7/2)

CASHMERE BABY - Nieves and Hewitt teamed up together are a punter's friend.

Vulnerable Contenders: #6 SAVE THE QUEEN (ML=7/5), #7 RADIANT REBEL (ML=3/1), #4 LILLY MAE (ML=6/1),

SAVE THE QUEEN - No accomplishments for this entrant in a short distance event over the last two months tells me that this filly is in a tough circumstance RADIANT REBEL - This filly is always around, but just doesn't win. Difficult to bet on her on the top end. LILLY MAE - Not likely that the speed rating she registered on Jun 15th will be good enough in this event.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #5 CASHMERE BABY to win if you can get at least 1/1 odds
                    EXACTA WAGERS: 5 with 2
