Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Late Pick 4 Analysis

    July 14, 2025 | By Al Cimaglia

Yonkers Raceway has a 9-race card. The $1.00 Pick 5 has a $10,000 guaranteed pool, and the sequence begins in Race 5. The $2.00 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 6, and it will be my focus. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 6 (8:25 PM EDT)

3-Heza Charttopper A (7/2)-Willing to toss last against Open company and now drops back down to the level of a win 2 back. Beat these that night going gate to wire leaving from the rail. Has enough gate speed to get the top and not look back again.
5-Jumpingjackmac N (4-1)-New Zealand bred looks like a good one winning its qualifier on 7-7 with a 0.55 back half. Banked over $167k in 20 starts last year, and the 8-year-old should be tough to beat if dialed on high. This will be the first real race since 12-20.

    Race 7 (8:45 PM EDT)

1-Huntinthelastdolar (8/5)-Had a 3-race win streak snapped after drawing the 7 hole in last. Knows how to go gate to wire against this type, and Jason Bartlett will look to work that plan tonight.
7-Desperate Man (3-1)-Beat the Invites from post 7 in its last start on 6-30. Knows how to string wins together. Matt Kakaley could look to leave hard or may duck and try to take control after the dust settles. Either could work and will respect despite drawing outside.

    Race 8 (9:05 PM EDT)

1-The Bigboss A (4-1)-Raced well in last after stepping up off a win. Finished a close 3rd and the two that finished ahead are not in this field. Aussie bred appears to be getting better and could be sitting on a big try leaving from the 1-hole. Brent Holland takes the lines and will look for an aggressive steer.
6-Soho Dow Jones A (3-1)-Bumps up after going gate to wire, paced the back half in 55.2 and drew off by almost 4 lengths. Jason Bartlett sticks, when driving for the Dilloian barn he posts 45% winners and has a good chance to add to that total here.

    Race 9 (9:25 PM EDT)

1-Why Tomorrow Ray (5/2)-Ray is often in the hunt but like most in this field is camera shy. Fits, Bartlett steers and now draws the rail which could be the winning difference.
7-Lyons Benjamin (4-1)-If Tyler Buter is determined to get the top that could happen. The question is how much gas was used to land on the point. Unlike others this horse likes to win in general and has taken 5 pictures in 15 races at YR. Makes the first start for the Laterza barn and is in sharp form.

    $2 Late Pick 4

    3,5/1,7/1,6/1,7
    Total Bet $32

      Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

Presque Isle Downs - Race #4
#5 Hope She Comes Thought she'd show a bit better off the bench last time out, but I'm willing to give her another chance after that really dull comeback. She has had a lot of chances, but she has a bit of ability to get past horses late, and that might be enough to land this one.
#2 Palace Revolt There are a few races on his page that would probably get the job done, and he has some upside while getting back to a sprint spot.
#7 Warrior's Mission Mild concern that he's going to take too much cash despite a couple of fading tries on his page, but he's still lightly raced compared to most of these and presumably has a little upside still.
Race Summary Hope She Comes might be live with the boys today in a spot with some chasing and prompting pace but not much finishing kick. Her grinding late ability may play well here.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #6
#7 Maximum Faith Think he has some of the more obvious upside in this spot after staying on OK in that career debut when going long. Guessing he'll be tighter this time around, and he should find a great tracking spot from here.
#3 Cracking Connor He's another with some room to come forward after the useful debut run, and he might get involved a touch earlier today while adding blinkers. One of the ones.
#1 The Fed's Plot He has turned in a couple solid local runs, and he figures for a pretty cozy trip from the fence today. The company lines show he's obviously in the mix with this crew.
Race Summary Maximum Faith can step forward at second asking after staying on nicely considering he was going long in the career debut. Hoping the other two listed above will help keep the price just playable?
Presque Isle Downs - Race #8
#1 Candy Jane She draws well to make a break for it in a race with a few pressing types but no serious pace -- think she's dangerous today with some logical upside if she can control the tempo.
#4 Bucchini She looks like a good fit from the Gulfstream races, and but I worry she's going to take a bit too much cash compared to her realistic win chances. In the mix.
#7 Chris's Kitty The form has gone the wrong way since a decent debut, but the good news it that career debut came over this surface, and she'll get back to it for the first time since. Maybe she just likes it here? Could wake up.
Race Summary Candy Jane has enough pace to have a run for it from the inside early here, and she may be just playable on the board if Bucchini starts to take a bit too much cash.

        Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

        Parx - Race #1
#4 SPERRY CHALET (8-1) Can use her speed well for barn on 5-21 run with similar layoff types.
#7 TIGGY THUNDER (3-1) Dropped back after alert start, mounted ‘strong’ rally to just miss in debut.
#1 INSTANT VISION (4-1) Second in 3 of last 4 starts at Parx, sheds 7 pounds, draws rail.
Race Summary SPERRY CHALET pressed the winning favorite and finished 2-1/2 lengths behind a follow-up front-end winner two starts ago at Churchill Downs. She then gave way chasing the pace in a MSW sprint won by Angel of Hope, who came back with a wire-to-wire allowance victory last week. Bet to win and place and play 4-1, 4-7 and 7-4 exactas.
        Parx - Race #5
#6 HEAT ALERT (9-2) Stopped two back, no threat in faster follow-up, worth a second look off prior starts.
#7 FLUFF THE PILLOW (3-1) Ran 1-2 at various venues recently, can return quick claim dividend.
#4 ZOPPI FISCHBIEN (4-1) Re-claimed with 2-44 mark, followed winner’s move when second two back.
Race Summary HEAT ALERT has speed, gets class relief and doesn’t shy from the photo-finish camera. The 4-year-old is a $66k earner at this distance and offers good enough value for a win and place bet. Also play 6-6, 6-7, 7-6 and 7-7 daily doubles.
        Parx - Race #7
#6 BE MY QUEEN (9-2) Speed could make her queen for today in this spot, good value play.
#7 FIFTY NINE FIFTY (5-1) No fire as the favorite, gets in light off the claim for hot barn.
#4 SILVER CITY KITTY (4-1) Staked 8-1 winner in 3-path through solid splits and ran second at 6-1/2F.
Race Summary BE MY QUEEN couldn’t stay with the fleet-footed favorite for a higher claiming tag but held second. She led to the stretch two starts ago and ‘dug in’ before the odds-on favorite passed by for the win. She can maximize her speed in this field. Bet to win and place and play a 4-6-7 exacta box.

              # 1 BOURBON BLAST 9/2
              # 6 TRAUMARAMA 5/2
My choice in this event is CAT ONE. Has to be given a chance as she drops to compete against this easier field of horses. Appears to have a competitive class edge based on the recent company kept. Fennessy has this filly travelling well and is a quite good selection based on the respectable Speed Figures earned in route races recently. BOURBON BLAST - Put up a reliable speed figure in the latest race. Can run another good one in this contest. Has recorded solid Speed Figures in dirt route races in the past. TRAUMARAMA - Morrell has her trained solidly to break rapidly out of the gate. Has to be given a chance based on the strong Equibase Speed Figure put up in the last contest.

                # 3 HOLD MY HALO 9/2
PRESHA has a formidable shot to take this affair especially at 10/1. Should come out strong - I have liked the way this filly has moved sharply to the lead recently. With a formidable 84 Equibase Speed Fig last time out, will definitely be a factor in this competition. I like Achard on this filly to give her a solid chance to hit the wire first. YES INDEED - With a reliable 99 average Equibase Speed Fig at the distance, seems well suited for today's affair. Ran a strong last race. HOLD MY HALO - Is a strong contender based on figures posted recently under today's conditions. Could best this field based on the speed figure - 88 - of her last race.

                  Mountaineer Park - Race #1 - Post: 7:00pm - Optional Claiming - 5.0 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $18,000 Class Rating: 68

                  Rating:

                  #2 JUST MURPHY (ML=9/2)
                  #1 ZEALOUS STORM (ML=3/1)
                  #8 BABY DOG (ML=8/1)

JUST MURPHY - There's only one animal who has won over this course, and this is the one. ZEALOUS STORM - I think this gelding is very ready right now. I like the fact that Poole brings him back to a race so quickly. This gelding is in top condition right now. Finished second last time around the track and comes back promptly. Another way to assign class is (EPS) earnings per start. This horse has the uppermost in the bunch. I think he'll be close at the finish. BABY DOG - Clouston drops him down to this class level. You don't need too much more handicapping information to figure that this animal has a good chance at this level.

                  Vulnerable Contenders: #7 SUPER PUNCHER (ML=2/1), #6 STORMIN' RUNNER (ML=6/1), #3 DANCING KING (ML=8/1),

SUPER PUNCHER - This less than sharp equine hasn't been on the track since Jun 14th. Not even any works. STORMIN' RUNNER - Tough to like the downward moving flow (57/47/41) of speed ratings. DANCING KING - Will not be easy for this horse to beat this group off of that last speed fig. Not likely to improve enough to run a figure close enough to today's Equibase class figure, so put him on the likely underlays list.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Go with #2 JUST MURPHY on top if we're getting at least 7/2 odds

                    #7 MARKSON (ML=4/1)

BETTER THAN GOOD - I really like sprinters that make a quick turnaround. Tracy drops him down to this class. You don't need too much more handicapping knowledge to figure that this horse has a good chance at this level. SURPRISE ROAD TRIP - This gelding is in nice condition, having run a nice race on June 29th, finishing third. I like the fact that this gelding's last speed rating, 65, is tops in this bunch. MARKSON - This thoroughbred coming off a solid contest in the last month or so is a win candidate in my opinion. The race may set up nicely for this gelding's powerful rally. Adding blinkers occasionally leads to an improved performance on the racetrack.

                    Vulnerable Contenders: #1 VIRTUE'S REWARD (ML=9/5), #2 CHERRY GLEN (ML=6/1),

VIRTUE'S REWARD - Had to show me much more last out. Never made much of an impact. CHERRY GLEN - Tough assignment for this thoroughbred to beat winners this time after only defeating maiden claimers last time around the track. The rating in the last race doesn't fit very well in this race when I look at the class figure of today's event. Mark this entrant as a possibly overvalued equine.
