Meet the Contenders: Saturday’s $1 Million Haskell at Monmo

    July 16, 2025 | By Jeremy Plonk

Six stakes make up the 14-race Saturday card at Monmouth Park, where the $1 million Haskell Stakes will be renewed for the 58th time. The Haskell lineup includes 3 of the top 4 finishers in this year’s memorable Preakness Stakes. The main event goes as Race 12 with post time set for 5:45 pm ET.

Horseplayers with 1/ST BET and Xpressbet be sure to take part in Saturday’s $5,000 Hit & Split promotion across the late pick 4 ($2,500) and late pick 5 ($2,500) sequences.

Let’s meet the contenders for the Haskell (Race 12):

#1 BRACKET BUSTER-: Front-running winner of Monmouth’s Haskell prep, the 1-1/16 miles Pegasus Stakes on June 14. That was the first stakes win for the Victoria Oliver trainee, who has been runner-up in Keeneland’s Lexington this spring before Haskell re-matched rival Gosger. Jockey John Velazquez is a 2-time Haskell winner (2006, Bluegrass Cat; 2013, Verrazano) and can be expected to employ early speed Saturday. The rail has produced 3 straight Haskell winners.

#2-JOURNALISM: The only horse to compete in all 3 Triple Crown legs this season, the Michael McCarthy trainee appears to have bounced out of the series eager for more. Connections could have waited for more time or closer spots to his Santa Anita home base, but aggressively come east a second time in 2025. Exaggerator in 2016 was the last Preakness winner to add the Haskell – and was the fifth between 2008-’16 to do so. He’s the 4-to-5 morning line choice coming out of his Belmont Stakes second-place finish to Jim Dandy-bound Sovereignty.

#3 WILDNCRAZYNIGHT-: 31-1 Pegasus Stakes runner-up is 30-1 longest shot on the morning line for the Haskell while making his fifth local start. Most experienced runner in the field has been to post 10 times overall, including a New Jersey-bred allowance sprint win here May 25. Son of Midnight Lute, who won the 2007 Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Monmouth and repeated a year later at Santa Anita.

#4-BURNHAM SQUARE: Rallying winner of the Holy Bull and Blue Grass this spring, the Kentucky Derby sixth-place finisher bounced out of that test with a runner-up in the Matt Winn at Churchill Downs. He’s been training on the synthetic surface at Ian Wilkes’ Skylight Training Center since and will reunite with regular rider Brian Hernandez Jr.

#5-NATIONAL LAW: No threat fourth of 6 in the Pegasus Stakes when more than 8 lengths behind Haskell rival Bracket Buster et al. Grey by Constitution debuted fourth at Monmouth last summer and represents local connections Colts Neck Stables LLC. Second-longest shot in the Haskell morning line at 20-1 odds but lures top pilot Irad Ortiz Jr. for the first time.

#6-GOSGER: Daylight leader late in the Preakness Stakes at 15-1 odds before Journalism reeled him in over the final strides. Son of 2016 Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist had won 2 straight prior, including the 1-1/16 miles Lexington at Keeneland and a 1-turn mile at Gulfstream. Jockey Luis Saez won this race last year aboard Dornoch as well as 2019 with Maximum Security. Returned to the workout tab at his Churchill Downs base in mid-June with the Haskell targeted.

#7-KENTUCKY OUTLAW: Monmouth’s Long Branch Stakes winner skipped the Pegasus in favor of the Delaware Derby, where he tired late to be third as the 9-5 favorite. Jockey Florent Geroux piloted Haskell winners in 2021 Mandaloun and 2022 Cyberknife and takes over the mount for the first time. Parx-based colt by Outwork hails from the tiny stable of owner-trainer Felissa Dunn, which has won with 13 of 36 starters in 2025.

#8-GOAL ORIENTED: Bob Baffert has a record 9 Haskell victories on his ledger, most recently Authentic in 2020. This lightly raced colt finished fourth in the Preakness after absorbing several bumps in upper stretch while making his stakes debut. He had 2 prior wins in maiden and allowance company, including an April 6 unveiling at his Santa Anita home base. Flavien Prat has been aboard in his last 2 and returns to the saddle, having won last Saturday’s Grade 1 Diana at Saratoga.

Meet the Contenders: Saturday’s CCA Oaks at Saratoga

        July 14, 2025 | By Jeremy Plonk

Saturday’s 12-race card at Saratoga co-features the Grade 2 $400,000 Alfred Vanderbilt for the sprinters, while 3-year-old fillies share billing in the Grade 1 $500,000 Coaching Club American Oaks. The 1-1/8 miles test is part of the Grade 1 Alabama series for the sophomore gals at the Spa.

Horseplayers with 1/ST BET and Xpressbet be sure to take part in this week’s Money-Back Special races each racing day for Saratoga.

Let’s meet the contenders for the Coaching Club American Oaks (Race 10):

#1-IMMERSIVE: Seeks to become the first Champion 2-Year-Old Filly to add this race at age 3 since Songbird in 2016.. Trainer Brad Cox won the 2018 CCA Oaks (Monomoy Girl) and 2023 CCA Oaks (Wet Paint). Nyquist filly won all 4 starts a year ago (including the Grade 1 Spinaway at Saratoga), but was defeated by a neck in her lone 2025 start when runner-up in Churchill Downs’ Monomoy Girl Stakes on June 14. Gets a rematch with her Louisville nemesis Take Charge Milady on Saturday.

#2-SWEET SERAPHINE: Quality Road home-bred filly makes the rise in class off back-to-back wins in a limited campaign this year. Nose winner at Churchill in late May and talked the Wilton Stakes on June 22 at Aqueduct by a head, showing a penchant for taking the close ones. Jose Ortiz piloted 2019 CCA Oaks winner Guarana. Trainer Cherie Devaux won a pair of races opening week at the Spa from 5 starters and was runner-up in the Grade 1 Diana with favored She Feels Pretty.

#3-SCOTTISH LASSIE: Last year’s Grade 1 Frizette winner was most recently third in Saratoga’s Grade 1 Acorn Stakes behind CCA Oaks return rival La Cara. McKinzie filly is 1-for-5 lifetime, but hasn’t missed a sujperfecta – including fourth in the 2024 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies behind Immersive. Jorge Abreu gets a chance to slay two dragons here and employs Joel Rosario in the saddle for the first time.

#4-TAKE CHARGE MILADY: Trainer Kenny McPeek seeks back-to-back wins in this race after champion Thorpedo Anna’s 2024 score. This 2-time listed stakes winner in 2025 has scores at Oaklawn and Churchill on her ledger, but is 3: 0-1-0 in graded stakes bids. Runner-up in the Grade 1 Ashland behind CCA Oaks rival La Cara, beaten 1-1/4 lengths at the shorter trip. Saratoga debut for daughter of Take Charge Indy, who seeks his first Spa graded stakes winner on dirt.

#5-DRY POWDER: Wilton Stakes runner-up to CCA Oaks rival Sweet Seraphine bids for her first career stakes win. She won 1 of 3 career starts but has never been worse than second for trainer Chad Summers. $525,000 daughter of Gun Runner got a late start to the races with a March 16 debut at Gulfstream. This will be her first start around 2 turns as Jose Lezcano takes the return mount.

#6-LA CARA: Mark Casse trainee’s 5 wins include 4 wire-to-wire jobs, none more impressive or important than the Grade 1 Acorn over this track June 6 during the Belmont Stakes Racing Festival. Jockey Dylan Davis has been the regular pilot this year, mastering the Grade 1 Ashland at Keeneland on the front end as well. Dropped the ball on the big stage in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies and Kentucky Oaks, beaten more than 29 lengths combined, but is 2-for-3 locally and vies for favoritism.

Race of the Week: Saratoga's Vanderbilt on Saturday

          July 16, 2025 | By Jeremy Plonk

          The Lead:
Saratoga's summer sprint slate includes Saturday's Vanderbilt in advance of the Forego on the August 23 Travers Stakes undercard. The Grade 2 $400,000 Vanderbilt re-matches last year's 1-2 finishers over 6 furlongs and shares the day's marquee with the Grade 1 Coaching Club American Oaks. The Vanderbilt arguably is the better betting race of the pair and goes as Race 11, immediately following the CAA Oaks. Jockeys Irad Ortiz Jr. and Flavien Prat each rode 2 of these last time out, but will be at Monmouth on Saturday for the Haskell, causing several rider switches.

Horseplayers with 1/ST BET and Xpressbet be sure to take advantage of the "Saratoga Sevens" promo this week. That's up to a $10 money-back special on win bets each day this week at the Spa on Race 7 if your horse runs second or third.

          Field Depth:
Grade 1 winners here include MULLIKIN, BOOK 'EM DANNO and NAKATOMI. BABY YODA and DAMON'S MOUND have won Grade 2s. SKELLY is a Grade 3 winner who is Grade 1-placed. MULLIKIN and NAKATOMI have consistently kept the best strength of schedule in this deep cast.

          Pace:
Five of the eight have made the early lead in at least 1 of their last 5 starts, but SKELLY is the only consistent early aggressor and should fire to the front from the rail. FULL MOOD MADNESS with speed jockey Kendrick Carmouche and in post 2 likely also gets asked early. This doesn't look like a race with a clear pace projection to alter the way you handicap it.

          Our Eyes:
          Here are my horse-by-horse notes.

#1-SKELLY: Set this pace in this race last year before winding up second-best to Nakatomi and will try to employ the same tactics with an improved result. Cooked too fast last out in the Aristides at Churchill and turned in the worst performance of his career outside of the Breeders' Cup Sprint. That should inflate the price on a horse favored in everything of late outside the BC. Pressure next door from Full Moon Madness could make things difficult.

#2-FULL MOON MADNESS: May not be fast enough to scoot early with Skelly, but from this draw and the quality to his outside, aggressive gate pilot Kendrick Carmouche could be limited in his options. He's a cut below these in terms of class and doesn't get any edges in terms of trip.

#3-DAMON'S MOUND: Saratoga Special winner here in 2022 looked like a future sprint star, but the 5-year-old has made just 11 starts since, winning stakes at Charles Town, Parx and vs. fellow Florida-breds at Gulfstream. Missed all of 2024 and has returned with improved performance and numbers since coming to Bill Mott's barn. Junior Alvarado will have to work out a trip as he's likely to be buried inside while no better than midflight early.

#4-MULLIKIN: Reliable as they come in the national sprint ranks, he's danced the biggest domestic dances since last summer and fires his shot every time. Led late in a melee finish in the Churchill Downs Stakes, giving way slightly behind a field that includes return winners Mindframe (G1 Stephen Foster) and Nysos (G3 Triple Bend). He's not a 6-furlong specialist (4: 1-1-1) and would stand out more over 7F vs. these, but still may punch them out on his best.

#5-BOOK 'EM DANNO: Ran down Mullikin in Saratoga's Grade 3 True North on the Belmont Stakes Festival week over 6-1/2 furlongs and finished just ahead of that one in the Churchill Downs Stakes prior. Hard to argue his remarkable consistency and records over the track (3: 2-0-1) and distance (3: 3-0-0). Jockey Paco Lopez gives up an entire Haskell Day stakes bonanza at his Monmouth Park stomping grounds to keep this mount (and ride the $175K Caress Stakes), which feels like a rousing endorsement.

#6-NASH: 2023 fall maiden flash has never lived up to expectations, going 1-for-5 in stakes and winning only the listed Hot Springs at Oaklawn in '24. But trainer Brad Cox got a terrific 1:07-3/5 allowance win out of him at Churchill Downs last out and Nash could be poised for the rise. Cross-entered in a $150K stakes Sunday at Ellis Park, where a tough cast including Booth, Banishing and Durante also are signed up. Difficult read.

#7-BABY YODA: Wildly inconsistent sprinter has been elite in flashes and downright uncompetitive in others, represented locally as well with an 8: 4-0-1 mark at Saratoga. No threat fourth in this race last year and wasn't able to run with Nakatomi, Skelly and Mullikin over this race a summer ago. Never know what you'll get with this Bill Mott trainee who comes off a flashy allowance win downstate in his only start this season. Best races are when he shows early speed and he's not likely to outfoot Skelly in the early action.

#8-NAKATOMI: Defending Vanderbillt champion got over his bridesmaid ways here last summer, yet still, his 13: 2-4-5 record over 6 furlongs reminds you of his more frequent outcomes. Six-year-old has lost all 4 starts since the '24 Vandy and never got involved as the favorite locally June 7 in the True North as the favorite after causing his own issue at the start. That's obviously a concern after a sharp effort in Dubai and if the veteran has bounced back out of that second Middle East road trip in 2 years.

          Most Likely Exotics Contender:
BOOK 'EM DANNO is 13-for-14 in the superfecta and has a sharp record over the track and distance.

          Best Longshot Contender:
No huge prices projected, but if NASH were to stay in this race, he could be a candidate for minor awards at a square number.

          Sending it in ($100 bankroll):
$50 win BOOK 'EM DANNO. $50 daily double starting in the Race 10 CCA Oaks, LA CARA to BOOK 'EM DANNO.

Scott Shapiro: Saratoga Spot Plays | Sat. July 19

            July 18, 2025 | By 1/ST BET

The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club is opening this weekend and Saturday is the biggest day of the year at Monmouth Park, but that does not mean that Saratoga’s Saturday slate is not worth diving into as well. The 12-race card has a trio of graded stakes races and it continues this week’s “Saratoga Sevens” Money Back Special Offer at 1/ST BET and Xpressbet where you get up to $10 back on your first Win bet if your horse finishes second or third in Race 7. As always, just remember to register on the promotional landing page.

Here are a few plays I like on the Saratoga card, including my Money Back play in the seventh!

            Race 4:

The pace should be contentious in this first-level allowance event at 6-furlongs, which should set things up for a runner that can settle early and finish with energy late. The public is likely to go to #5 Roswell to fill that role. The Into Mischief filly brings the best resume in having hit the board in 6 of 9 and earning nearly $150k to date, but she has struggled to find the winner’s circle. In fact, since her win on debut at Gulfstream Park in January ’24, the Bill Mott trainee has failed at 3-1 or lower five times. She is likely to hit the board, but not the type of horse I use on top.

I much prefer #6 Strong State. This daughter of Tom’s d’Etat ran two solid races versus restricted special weight company to kick off her career before being thrown into the deep end by trainer Al Stall, Jr. The bargain basement $18,000 Keeneland January ’23 purchase held her own in the Spinaway (G1) and Pocahontas (G3) before going to the sidelines until early June. It could have been natural maturation, the addition of Lasix, the class drop, or all of the above, but this filly ran extremely well to best a field of starter foes in Louisville off the bench. She draws perfectly outside the speeds and appears poised to make it two wins in a row to kick off her 3YO campaign.

Play: #6 Strong State (9-2 ML)

            //

            Race 7
Hopefully some of you have taken advantage of the “Saratoga Sevens’ Money Back Special Offer to start the racing week at the Spa. I am hopeful to not need the “insurance” with my play in this MSW for 2YOs at 6-furlongs over the main track where I like #3 Stradale. The Yaupon colt must have looked the part at the OBS April sale earlier this year to have commanded $1.3M. Sure, the mare is a half-sister to $851k earner Stormy Lucy, but there is little I found in the pedigree to suggest selling for over 50 times his sire’s stud fee. The Kaleem Shah owned runner looks quick and meets a field of mostly other firsters that likely will need the race. Hopefully, we get the morning line offering on what could be another quality Steve Asmussen sprinter.

            Play: #3 Stradale (3-1 ML)

            //

            Race 9: Caress (G3)

The first of the 3 aforementioned graded stakes is this 5.5-furlong dash over the lawn for fillies and mares where several exit last month’s Intercontinental (G2). The race was won in front running fashion by #6 Pipsy with #7 Future Is Now missing by a half-length. Both runners are in with a big shot again here, but I prefer the value of #8 Time to Dazzle. The Tracy Farmer owned filly makes her third start of the form cycle after a better than looks fourth-place finish in the Intercontinental when she was caught four-wide on the turn and understandably fell flat late. The daughter of Not This Time hopefully can avoid getting caught wide much of the way this time around. If so, she could turn the tables and earn her first graded stakes victory in the States.

Play: #8 Time to Dazzle (8-1 ML)

Al Cimaglia: The Meadows-Adios Eliminations Analysis

              July 19, 2025 | By Al Cimaglia

              XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXxx

The Meadows has a 12-race card with the first post coming at 12:45 EDT. The co-features roll in Race 9 and Race 10, the Delvin Miller Adios Eliminations with a $25,000 purse. The top 4 finishers plus the 5th place finisher with the highest career earnings will meet next Saturday in the $385,000 Final.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

              Race 9-1st Adios Elimination

              1-Rick Wink (3-1)-Chris Page-Ron Burke
              2-Prince Hal Hanover (7/2)-Todd McCarthy-Ian Moore
              3-Doncic (8-1)-Dave Palone-Brian Brown
              4-Lite Up The World (9/2)-James Macdonald-Anthony Beaton
              5-Twisted Destiny (5/2)-Dexter Dunn-Chris Ryder
              6-Knockout Round (15-1)-Dave Palone-Tony Alagna
              7-Papi’s Rocket (9-1)-Yannick Gingras-Ron Burke

5-Twisted Destiny (5/2)-The Chris Ryder pupil is a short track specialist who won the MGM Final at Yonkers on 6-27 and has been off since. Did qualify nicely at M1 on 7-11 and could be anxious to play in a real race. Will look for a big try leaving from a choice post.
2-Prince Hal Hanover (7/2)-Dq'd winner of the Med Pace doesn't appear often on smaller ovals but has been good when he did. Hit the board in 3 of 4 at Mea and did have the 8-hole this year and came 3rd. Set a lifetime mark of 149.3 in the PASS Final at PcD on 5-17 and should be a threat for top honors.
1-Rick Wink (3-1)-This is a $35,000 supplemental entry from the Burke Brigade. Actually, one of five from that outfit and is a local hero who has won all 4 races this year. Draws the rail and has lost only once in 13 lifetime starts. Now, will get a chance to show how good he is versus top competition.
4-Lite Up The World (9/2)-Mohawk invader is fast but not sure how it will do on a 5/8's oval. Certainly, the connections must be confident and will look for James MacDonald to find a way to qualify for the big money next Saturday.
7-Papi's Rocket (9-1)-The last couple at M1 were dull and had a bad trip two back. Seems to be in a tough spot to hit the top of the ticket with this post draw. But Yannick Gingras could find a way to get to the Final. Does good work on this oval (8-4-2-1).

              $10 Exacta key 5/2,1 Total Bet=$20

              Race 10-2nd Adios Elimination

              1-Wedlock Blue Chip (9-1) David Miller-Roland Mallar
              2-Railroad Station (8-1) Ronnie Wrenn Jr-Ron Burke
              3-Papis Pistol (3-1) David Miller-Sam DePinto
              4-Makes Sense (7-1) Dave Palone-Robert Cleary
              5-Sippinonsearoc (9/2) Yannick Gingras-Ron Burke
              6-Swingtown (4-1) Ronnie Wrenn Jr-Ron Burke
              7-Fallout (4-1) Tim Tetrick-Tony Alagna
              8-Glowing Lou (20-1) Jordan Stratton-Cory Stratton

6-Swingtown (4-1)-Qualified at Mea on 5-17 and zipped around in 149.3 which is 3/5's of a second faster than in its 150.1 mark at M1. Has never raced for a purse at Mea but knows how to win on smaller ovals. Ronnie Wrenn should have the pedal down and could look to go gate wire.
5-Sippinonsearoc (9/2)-Banked $568,000 last year and things haven't clicked in the same way in 2025 but was 1 for 1 at Mea last year. Although finishing 2nd in its last start, that was probably the best race this year considering it came from post 9. The upswing could continue and at a square price.
3-Papis Pistol (3-1)-Comes off a flat effort in the Med Pace. No one was beating the top 2 finishers that night, but the Sam DePinto entry was dull even with an inside trip. Will trust the connections have no qualms about racing on a smaller oval. This is a big track horse but has the ability to bring top speed in a hurry.
2-Railroad Station (8-1)-Will lean toward a Ron Burke, Sweet Lou colt who has an inside draw to claim a spot in the Final. Has had trouble finishing off miles but is in a spot to get a suck-around trip and be able to advance.
7-Fallout (4-1)-This is another who was dull in the Med Pace and now makes its 2nd start on Lasix. Tim Tetrick is between the pipes, and he will need to work his magic with this post draw. Maybe Lasix will make a difference, has talent, and did bank over $568k last year.

                #8
                Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

                Del Mar - Race #4
#9 American Tiger Check him out on the track and tote ahead of this, but the Yakteen barn has landed three of their eight starts in similar spots here in the last couple years with winners at $38, $23 and $10. Midrange price chance on what is strictly a barn play in a spot with no proven standouts yet.
#7 Jalisco Have been waiting for this guy to put things together a bit in hopes we hadn't seen his best yet, but he took a step back last out and needs to rebound today. Forward player wouldn't surprise.
#2 Arkadelphia He caught an easy winner in that last one after debuting in stakes company earlier this year, and I wouldn't argue too hard with anyone landing here except for the fact that the price might not be much.
Race Summary Wouldn't be a shock to see American Tiger make some noise in this spot for a barn that has done really good work with their local short 2yo sprinters. Why not.
                Del Mar - Race #9
#6 Amorita She looks like as good a fit as any in a competitive race. Would love to see if she can sit a perfect first-jump trip while getting back around two turns and meeting some other pace.
#5 Thought Process Classy type came back with authority off the bench at Santa Anita, and she showed the exact style that I think may be effective today in a couple of those local races last year. The one to beat.
#1 Will Then She's capable of something better than she showed in that last one when she had her three-race winning streak snapped at Churchill. Could get a cozy run from the fence while tucked in behind some quicker players early.
Race Summary Amorita looks interesting enough in here. If you think Thought Process can lose here, this starts to feel pretty wide open with several of them bringing similar baseline types of runs, and she should be an OK price.
                Del Mar - Race #11
#2 Fondest Dream She was 10/1 in a field of 11 in her only North American start here last year, and she didn't really pick up at any point. She seemed a bit better meant than that, and this looks like a really reasonable spot to get her started back toward figuring out where she stands. Wouldn't be shocked to see her bring something much, much better today.
#11 Roselee May She has really come to life since getting to the turf in the last handful of starts, and she has the dangerous combination of pace and the slight ability to rate. Could see it.
#5 Motet There are plenty of more likely players in here, but I think her two-back run was actually kind of OK when trying winners for the first time, and she brings some upside today on the switch back to the lawn. For a piece at a big number?
Race Summary Fondest Dream needs way better than we saw from her last year, but there's absolutely nothing like Thought Process in here, so I would expect that we're going to see something much truer to her debut score today than the dull stakes try. Would be thrilled to take that gamble at anything like the 15/1 ML price.

                  #9
                  Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

                  Colonial Downs - Race #1
#3 PICO PLAT (5-2) Exits MSW ranks, could hold tactical advantage, barn going well.
#5 LUCKED IN (10-1) Lone one-mile try translates well in his second start this year.
#6 SET ABOUT (7-5) Finished behind two well-bet, next-out winners, but vet voided claim on him.
Race Summary PICO PLAT showed some speed in MSW company to start his career and can put it to good use in this spot if he breaks alertly. He earned his top speed figure with blinkers added and runs first time for a claiming tag for a barn that is going well. Bet to win and place and play 3-5 and 3-6 exactas.
                  Colonial Downs - Race #2
#1 COURAGEOUS MISSION (4-1) Late runner breezed 5F in 1:02 to get ready for 3yo debut.
#3 COLONEL TULLY (5-2) Led by city block off bullet workouts but got caught in 5-1/2F dirt sprint.
#5 BUTHESPRETTY (5-1) Awakened with Lasix on the class drop, rallied for second at 11-1 odds.
Race Summary COURAGEOUS MISSION showed late interest in his first three starts on the lawn at Colonial Downs last year. He gets plenty of pace to rally into in his seasonal debut and gets Lasix for the first time. Bet to win and place and play 1-3, 1-5 and 3-1 exactas.
                  Colonial Downs - Race #5
#6 DISCO RULES (3-2) Won off layoff, closed like a wild horse in allowance, rounding to another win.
#4 PRANCING SPIRIT (10-1) Has done little for top barns but recent :46.4 bullet work is encouraging.
#5 DAZZY (9-5) Well-traveled 6yo holds ultra-consistent form but offers little value in pursuit of $200k.
Race Summary DISCO RULES hopped at the start, got caught 4-wide on the final turn and closed with a flourish to finish second in a six-figure allowance at Churchill Downs. She won going a route of ground off a nine-month layoff in the race prior while wearing blinkers for the first time. Bet to win and place and play 6-4 and 6-5 exactas.

COMMENTS: SPALIDAY ran his two best career races on Monmouth turf including the highest last race speed figure. SACRED WISH is training as well as ever for her first race since Kentucky Derby day. NO MO CANDY is a neck from winning four of his five races and any of her last three would do. MADAME MISCHIEF has by far the top Smart Sheets C ZONE and is a head from winning her last two starts.

COMMENTS: JUST A TOUCH could get out to the lead on moderate fractions and lead from gate to wire. CLASSIC CATCH ran much better race internals from start to finish in his last effort. SURFACE TO AIRs resume hints and a major performance bump in the second start after a layoff. GRAN YACO increased his speed figure in the last three races and has hit the board in four of four at Monmouth.

COMMENTS: BUCCHERINO has an excellent workout between races and won the last time he worked before a start. SILVER SLUGGER won seven of eleven races and wins if he has the lead in the stretch. NOTHING BETTER finished fifth here last year as the favorite. His workouts suggest he could make amends. ISIVUNGUVUNGU will be closing at the end and has the best wins on his past performances and should get a good trip with plenty of speed to chase.

COMMENTS: CANDIED finished in the money in ten of eleven of her races and should get a good trip with Irad Ortiz. MAJESTIC OOPS dominated in the last three races and has a one length total pace edge according to Smart Sheets. DORTH VADER ran better race internals with faster fractions in her last. COMMENTS: A case can be made for at least half of the field. REDISTRICTING gets the nod as the top choice as he has the best turf pedigree and five of his nine races would be good enough. LIMITED LIABILITY is in peak form right now and has performed well in graded stakes races. CORRUPTION just needs to get off to a decent start with a clean trip. STARTING OVER finished last in this race last year. A repeat of his last effort and he could be first this year.

                    Show 4-1 8 Goal Oriented F Prat
                    Wild card 9-2 6 Gosger L Saez

                    Alternate 2 10-1 1 Bracket Buster J R Velazquez
COMMENTS: JOURNALISM is the most obvious choice on the card and will be the heavy favorite. KENTUCKY OUTLAW has a crazy fast workout at Parx between races and won his only race at Monmouth. GOAL ORIENTED had a really tough race in the Preakness when JOURNALISM just knocked him out of the way. A cleaner trip today and it could be different. GOSGER is a little racing luck and distance from being undefeated in four.

Keeneland Select Pick of the Day | July 19, 2025

                      Jul. 18, 2025

Race 11 at Monmouth | Saturday, July 19 | Post Time 5:09 PM Eastern
United Nations Stakes – Grade 2 | Purse $600,000 | One Mile and Three Eighths on Turf | Three Year Olds and Upward
Top Contenders to win: Redistricting (3), Rebel Red (7), Get Smokin (10)
Horses to consider for exacta and trifecta tickets: Corruption (1), Limited Liability (4), Grand Sonata (5), Starting Over (8), Hush of a Storm (12)
                      Analysis and win contenders:
In a very deep and talented field of 12 there appears to be only three horses with very little probability to win – Tawny Port (2), Major Dude (9) and Lord Eddard Stark (11). I’ll add Vote No (6) to the list as well as he was a claiming level horse as recently as March and appears a cut below the top contenders.
Among the rest, Redistricting (3) is the one we need to consider first, not only because it appears trainer Chad Brown pointed him to this race by giving him a prep over the course last month when winning the Monmouth Stakes in “ridden out” fashion, but also because he may come in a bit under the radar compared to the main contenders, having never run this far. In nine career starts, Redistricting has only run farther than nine furlongs once, and that was a poor seventh place effort at a mile one-quarter in the summer of 2023 in the Belmont Derby. However, he wasn’t ready for graced stakes back then in only the second start of his career, but he’s matured nicely since then, and he fits at this grade 2 level with runner-up efforts in the Knickerbocker Stakes and Seabiscuit Handicap last fall. His pedigree suggests he will love this distance, as sire Kingman produced Serve the King, who won the similar 11-furlong Red Smith Stakes. With Prat aboard last month for the Monmouth Stakes win and back in the saddle today, Redistricting could take a huge step forward and add to Brown’s strong record of having won the United Nations four times in the last nine years he has had at least one entrant. That last two of those wins, in 2022 and in 2023, came with Prat in the saddle as well.
Rebel Red (7) has won three of nine since coming to the U.S. in April of 2024, ignoring the Louisville Stakes in May where he clipped heels and fell. He rebounded off that effort in a BIG way when winning the Chorleywood Stakes at this 11-furlong trip on the same day Redistricting won at Monmouth. Rallying seven paths wide on the far turn, Rebel Red passed seven horses with ease to win. The only other time he ran this distance came in the Red Smith last fall where Rebel Red led by a head with an eighth of a mile to go and was game to the wire, settling for third but just a nose behind runner-up Limited Liability (4). That effort or the one last month if repeated in this race gives Rebel Red a decent shot to succeed.
Get Smokin (10) won the 2024 United Nations in his second start after returning from a nine-month layoff and prepping in the Eclipse Stakes at Woodbine. This year he’s returning from nearly six months off and prepped in the Eclipse. He is reunited with De La Cruz, who as up for the win last year as well as the 19 to 1 upset win the previous fall in the similar Kentucky Turf Cup Stakes, and there’s little doubt that Get Smokin will be in front from the start where he likes it and could successfully play “come catch me” once again.
Most of the other nine can complete the exacta or trifecta, with a bit extra emphasis on Limited Liability (4) and Grand Sonata (5), who (combined) have finished first or second in 19 of 46 turf races, mostly stakes. That being said, Corruption (1), Starting Over (8) and Hush of a Storm (12) could also run into the exotics.
                      Win Bets:
We should start with Redistricting (3) and consider a win bet at odds of 3 to 1 or more.
I would not hesitate to make a second win bet, on either Rebel Red (7) or on Get Smokin (10), whichever offers higher odds, of at least 3 to 1.
                      Exactas:
Box Redistricting (3), Rebel Red (7), Get Smokin (10)
Redistricting (3), Rebel Red (7), Get Smokin (10) over Redistricting (3), Rebel Red (7), Get Smokin (10), Corruption (1), Limited Liability (4), Grand Sonata (5), Starting Over (8), Hush of a Storm (12)
