Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Late Pick 4 Analysis

    July 21, 2025 | By Al Cimaglia

    XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Yonkers Raceway begins the week with a 9-race card. The $1.00 Pick 5 rolls in Race 5, and it has a $10,000 guaranteed pool. The $2.00 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 6, and the sequence will be my focus. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 6 (8:25 PM EDT)

1-Tobins Chester (8-1)-This is a difficult race to read, have landed on the rail horse who gets needed class relief. Dan Dube should be no worse than in the pocket off the gate.
2-Why Not Now (5/2)-The Alexander trainee cashes checks but has forgotten how to win the past 2 years. Has won only 2 times in the last 28 races, but this is a beatable field. Like the one above can be on the lead or in the pocket after the wings fold.

    Race7 (8:45 PM EDT)

2-Mullinax (5/2)-The Engblom trainee has scorched the last 2 fields but getting 3 straight could be a challenge. Considering recent form plus starting inside should help chances of taking another picture despite bumping up a couple of levels.
4-Heza Charttopper A (3-1)-Drops to a comfortable spot and won the last time versus this kind 2 back. This is a main player, and George Brennan could go gate to wire at a short price.

    Race 8 (9:05 PM EDT)

4-Huntinthelastdolar (9/5)-The 5-year-old blasted off the gate 2, 3 and 4 back to win and some efforts came with outside draws. Can’t follow that plan successfully every time, and Bartlett didn’t have the pedal through the floorboard leaving from the 7-hole in last. Could start a new win streak tonight as landing on the engine shouldn’t be a difficult task.

    Race 9 (9:25 PM EDT)

2-Copperfield (8/5)-Shipped back from KY for the last start and finished 2nd in the first try on Lasix. Bartlett knows how to beat this kind with the 4-year-old, and it should be all systems go leaving from the inside.
7-Soho Dow Jones A (5-1)-Took control early on, didn’t look back and now bumps up. Went off at 1/5 last time and could be somewhat overlooked with this post draw. Needs a trip but has beaten better here in the past. Best to respect as the Dilloian barn is clicking at a 28% win rate over the last 30 days.

    $2 Late Pick 4

    1,2/2,4/4/2,7
    Total Bet=$16

      Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

Presque Isle Downs - Race #5
#2 Boujie Betz Forward player isn't meeting a ton of other pace and might be able to shake free in the turn while getting into an easier spot off the decent stakes try last out. Seems like the right one.
#1 Little Lamb Chop Tactical speed might find herself in a decent spot while tucked in just behind the one outside of her, but it's easy to see her settling for another underneath share here.
#6 Bulls N Berry She drilled a cheap bunch at Mountaineer to graduate last time out, and there is probably some upside still with that score coming in her first start in more than a year. Something better still in the tank?
Race Summary Boujie Betz should get the run of the race from up close here, and she seems likely to be tough if she can just hold that recent form.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #7
#9 He's a Mess He cruised against two others last time out, but he looked pretty well-meant in that spot even before it scratched down. Could see him moving forward in the third start back and making a dent here.
#8 Twilight Dancer He steps up off the claim while going second off the break, and he was competitive with some of the better names in this group last season. Forward move today keeps him in the frame.
#3 John Dutton Not totally sold about this one going long, but he stretches out here in good form in search of a fourth consecutive win. I dunno.
Race Summary He's a Mess has been sharp over the local footing for some time, and he hinted at coming back into his best form when easily dispatching a pair of opponents last time out. He's an OK fit with this kind with his better stuff.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #8
#5 Slainte Mhath She's capable of something better than she showed last time out, and I'm hoping she'll get back to one of those types of races today while controlling the pace in a spot without much other speed. She's out of excuses after a lot of chances, but the same can be said about the likely chalk up next...
#8 Positive Carry She has a big claim on this one while taking a significant class drop today, and she has the right kind of positional pace to stay in touch early. Suppose she's going to be tough, but I don't trust her a whole lot at a likely short price.
#2 Stroke of Luck She makes sense here after a couple underneath shares with similar, but she's another I don't trust a whole lot, so I'm looking for something a bit more appealing on the tote board.
Race Summary Not sure who you're supposed to be excited about in here, so I'm willing to fish for a price in hopes Slainte Mhath bounces back with something a bit better today while controlling the pace. She typically doesn't stay in bad form for long.

        Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

        Parx - Race #5
#1 TAKEMETOTHEMOON (7-2) Take off with him toward lucrative Philly Big 5 mandatory payout.
#5 MENDELSFLY (6-1) Won going away at this distance when last seen in January.
#10 CHECKITUP (4-1) Rallied past ‘Moon’ before deep closer caught him, draws post 10.
Race Summary TAKEMETOTHEMOON is 9 of 19 in the money at today’s distance and a must use in the opening leg of the 50-cent Philly Big 5 wager that carries a $414,260 mandatory payout. He ‘rushed up wide’ to contend for the lead in the same spot last out, but a stumbled start proved costly. In the start prior, he set a clear pace on a muddy track in a $12,500 claimer that produced Fluff The Pillow, a wire-to-wire winner here last week. He sheds 5 pounds and figures up close throughout from the rail. Use numbers 1, 5 and 10 in the leadoff leg of the Big 5.
        Parx - Race #6
#7 FLYIN HAWAIIAN (5-2) Has speed and a solid debut race under his belt, strictly the one to beat.
#9 PETEY MOTTO (6-1) Breezed in 35.2 from Parx gate in final workout last Monday.
#8 COLOMA (9-2) Debuts as gelding for barn on 15-56 run with 2yo firsters; dam ran second in debut.
Race Summary FLYING HAWAIIAN dueled head-and-head to the quarter pole with the 9-to-5 winner and continued gamely until late to finish fourth at 5F. He is handled by top connections and is a deserving favorite again while facing seven first-time starters in a shorter sprint. Use numbers 7 and 9 in the Philly Big 5.
        Parx - Race #9
#2 FULL IRISH (9-5) Towers over field, will carry the hopes of many in Big 5 closeout.
#7 YOUBETTERBEJOKING (10-1) Sheds weight, gets pace to rally into at proven distance.
#3 BRINDISI (6-1) Good Parx resume, good recent form, use underneath in exotic wagers.
Race Summary FULL IRISH takes the plunge for a high-percentage claim barn, but he is eligible for this spot by three days and should win at anywhere near his best. He dueled to the stretch as the odds-on favorite against He’s In Charge (14-48, $374k) two starts back. Use numbers 2 and 7 in the Big 5 finale in hopes that your ticket is still alive.

              # 5 RULE SEVENTY SIX 6/1
SEND COINS looks competitive to best this group and is a very good value bet given the line at 30/1. Could best this group of horses based on the speed rating - 84 - of his last affair. VIVALDI - Shows evidence of the look of a profitable play, averaging a solid 88 speed rating which is one of the best in this group of horses in this race. The winning percentage shown by horses entered by Brown running at this distance are the top in this group of horses in this race. RULE SEVENTY SIX - There is a very good chance that this entry's late pace will improve with second time Lasix. Quite good rider and conditioner combo winning 18 percent of their races working together.

                Louisiana Downs - Race #1 - Post: 4:05pm - SO - 7.5 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $10,500 Class Rating: 96

                Rating:

                #6 DUDE DROP KID (ML=8/1)
                #9 PACIFICISLANDTIME (ML=9/5)
                #5 SPECIAL MEMORY (ML=9/2)

DUDE DROP KID - This one should make a move at the top of the stretch. Great late pace in the last race on the grass, this horse was strong. Anything close in this race, and this one should win. PACIFICISLANDTIME - Running on the grass today, you should review a horse's class. This one has the top number in the bunch. I like to play this angle, a thoroughbred coming back off a solid contest within the last month. SPECIAL MEMORY - Likes to go to the lead and the fact that today is a shorter distance should help. I do like the fact this gelding is back in a race so quickly. Traditional handicapping theory - 3rd or 4th start after a layoff generally leads to a big effort. Today could be the day.

                Vulnerable Contenders: #2 BEN DREAMING (ML=2/1), #1 MUFFIN NUTS (ML=7/2), #7 FLASH N CLASS (ML=4/1),

BEN DREAMING - This animal didn't show any front speed in the last event. Now he is trying a sprint. Tough chance at the shorter distance. I cannot play this continual non-winner. Gets the assignment fulfilled now and then. MUFFIN NUTS - Doubtful that this horse will finish better than he did last out when finishing fourth. FLASH N CLASS - Generally I need a sprinter to have some success lately in short distance contests in order to support him. Would have to improve off that eighth place finish last time to make an impact here.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - PACIFICISLANDTIME - One of the class angles that my pal Solo Steve and I play, is to look at the lifetime earnings per start. This pony is tops in my book.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Have to go with #6 DUDE DROP KID on the win end if we get at least 7/2 odds

WHERE IS ESSA is my choice. Must be in condition if the handler is bringing him back so soon. This gelding is a solid contender based on his earnings per start in dirt sprint events. Has run soundly when moving a dirt sprint race. TRUEBELIEVE - Has to be considered versus this group displaying competitive figures lately and an average Equibase Speed Figure of 77 under similar conditions. I expect a very good performance from this equine whose trainer has one of the best ROI percentages with horses running at this distance and surface.

HANDSOME HENRY - Foster rode this horse for the first time in the last race and comes right back in today's race. WHATWOMENWANT - This gelding is in fine form, having run a strong race on Jul 5th, finishing second. Searching through the pps for this race, I noted right away this horse's last effort was more than meets the eye. Showed good speed, fell back, and then ran evenly. This gelding is tops in earnings per race. Check out this thoroughbred in the saddling enclosure. QUEENS OVER JACK'S - It looks like the pace horses may duel each other into the ground. When the real running starts this mare should be finishing strongly. When a pony finishes in-the-money as often as this mare does, you will usually want to use her in your exotic wagers. Should do well in this field. Weight shift of -5 from Jul 4th race at Century Mile.

                    Vulnerable Contenders: #5 JUST KEN (ML=5/2), #2 VANTASTICCANAVERAL (ML=9/2),

JUST KEN - A racer that breaks his maiden in a Maiden Claimer is usually recognized as a poor risk next time out. VANTASTICCANAVERAL - Hard to bet on these non-winning types at less than generous odds. This pony ran a disappointing speed figure last time out. He shouldn't improve and will likely suffer defeat today running that fig.
