Jeremy Plonk: Saratoga Spot Plays | Thursday, July 24, 2025

    July 23, 2025 | By Jeremy Plonk

Potential Travers players are in action in the featured $135,000 Curlin Stakes in Race 9. Trainer Chad Brown has the favorites with Strategic Focus and Chancer McPatrick, but value can be found elsewhere. We'll try to do so. Horseplayers with 1/ST BET and Xpressbet be sure to take advantage of the Bet $200, Get $20 promotion each racing day this week when you bet $100 for both Saratoga and Del Mar the same day.

    Saratoga | Race 2 | 1:44 pm ET
#2 Orgonite (6-1 morning line odds) has shown continued improvement in 3 starts for trainer David Donk, who also trained this one's mama, Hessonite, who got better as her career progressed and earned more than $800,000. Stronger-than-it-looks rally last time out when fourth over a shorter distance and appears to want more ground. Win-place bet #2.

    Saratoga | Race 9 | 5:44 pm ET
#6 Crudo (6-1 morning line odds) gets a far different scenario in the 1-1/8 miles Curlin Stakes than his last bid when tiring in the 1-1/4 miles Belmont Stakes against the division's elite. Carries 6 fewer pounds against softer competition and the quicker run into the first turn will accentuate the advantage of his early pace ability. Win-place bet #6.

      Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

      Del Mar - Race #1
#8 Twirling Light Her only turf sprint wasn't awful, but she didn't show anything else along the way in her final three starts of that campaign last year. Still, I like that she's at the special weight level going short for the comeback. Could see it.
#9 Judicious Tactical type looked good at this trip last August, and she should be in line for a decent trip while up close if she's ready to go fresh today.
#10 Heads In Beds She finished up OK in the debut and has some room to come forward at second asking. She's got to turn the tables on Current Affair, but she has way more upside than that filly.
Race Summary Twirling Light has some appeal for me at an OK price while coming off the bench, as I'm hoping the cutback will help wake her up today.
      Del Mar - Race #7
#2 Splendora Price won't be much here, but I think she's going to be a handful in this spot while turning back to a sprint trip for this one and getting quite a bit of class relief. Should drill these.
#3 Ooty Get a look at her ahead of this one while returning for a top team -- the team that would make her the 'other' Baffert if that's your kind of thing.
#5 Practical Dream She should appreciate this softer spot today, and I could see her finding a pretty nice first-over run today. Not out of the question if the top choice can't land it.
Race Summary Splendora has a class edge on most of these and should be tough to handle after chasing a couple of tough customers in recent starts.
      Del Mar - Race #8
#3 Dixie's Delight This barn dropped a big one here last week and brings this one with some OK form from Los Al out of that last one. Should be her day.
#8 Rockford Peach She moved forward nicely enough last time out while dropping to the bottom, and she should be in a good spot turning for home with a chance to punch on.
#11 Perfect Life She was 61/1 in that good effort last time out, and that still leaves her with a little bit of upside with just the one start under her belt so far.
Race Summary Dixie's Delight can be tough here if she has any additional move forward in her off that good try last time out. Could be playable as something like the second choice.

        Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

        Delaware Park - Race #1
#7 SPEZIA’S SON (10-1) Showed pulse in latest, changes riders, projects ideal trip at a price.
#5 JR SERGIO (4-1) Trailed early, just missed as the odds-on choice, gets in light again.
#1 MUSGRAVE (6-1) Set pace and tired in first route attempt, moves outside in.
Race Summary SPEZIA’S SON produced improved speed numbers in his last five starts but posed no threat to winning at monster odds. Now he gets class relief and plenty of pace to launch a contending rally. Bet to win and place and play a 1-7-8 exacta box.
        Delaware Park - Race #3
#4 AWESOME PRINCE (8-1) Tempting price in wide open race, use in all gimmick wagers.
#7 MAJESTIC TIGER (7-2) Second in last three 6F sprints, second start off Ness claim.
#2 AVA K’S BOY (5-2) Went down fighting as fave in last pair, sheds 9 pounds, stalking trip preferred.
Race Summary AWESOME PRINCE, in the midst of a consistent $40,000 season, rallied 5-wide to finish third in a shorter sprint behind Johnnyfrenchfri (7-23, $150k). He should get a lively pace to make an upset run today. Bet to win and place and play 4-2 and 4-7 exactas.
        Delaware Park - Race #6
#1 ANAITA (9-5) Simply loves to win, no slowing her down in this spot, today’s Best Bet.
#3 SOCIAL WHIRL (15-1) No fire in lone start since October but can rally for share on best effort.
#6 BABY BLOCKS (3-1) Steady grass sprinter, good recent company lines, should sit ideal trip.
Race Summary ANAITA won 6 of the last 9 times Wesley Ho was aboard, four in photo finishes and one in stakes company on a yielding turf. She’s 2-for-2 on the Delaware lawn, carried 125 pounds to victory and met better rivals than she faces today. Bet to win and place and play a 1-3-ALL trifecta.

              Del Mar - Race #1 - Post: 2:00pm - Maiden Special - 5.0 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $80,000 Class Rating: 87

              Rating:

              #9 JUDICIOUS (ML=6/1)
              #2 SUNGLOW (IRE) (ML=5/2)
#10 HEADS IN BEDS (FR) (ML=5/1)

JUDICIOUS - I expect a lot from this mount. Her Equibase speed figures under similar conditions are tops in this bunch. This filly has the top turf fig in her last race. It doesn't take a college grad like The Brain to figure this here thoroughbred has a good chance. SUNGLOW (IRE) - Using this jock/conditioner combination is a good decision. Based on this filly's recent efforts, she should benefit from today's shorter trip. Another way to evaluate class is (EPS) earnings per start. This mount has the highest in the bunch. I think she'll be close at the finish. HEADS IN BEDS (FR) - This horse could be tough in today's contest, especially since Rispoli rode in the last race and now should be more familiar with this one. Lots of trouble last time around. This time around Rispoli should keep her clean so she runs a good race. I always like to see a filly getting Lasix for the second time. This one fits the bill.

              Vulnerable Contenders: #7 CURRENT AFFAIR (ML=3/1), #1 AMERICAN MISS (ML=5/1), #5 CURTSY (ML=5/1),

CURRENT AFFAIR - The speed figure in the last race doesn't fit very well in this event when I look at the Equibase class figure of today's contest. Mark this horse as a vulnerable competitor. AMERICAN MISS - Not the best 'placement' in this affair. CURTSY - I'm predicting a lackluster go of it out of her this time.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: #9 JUDICIOUS is going to be the play if we are getting 5/2 or better
              EXACTA WAGERS: 9 with [2,10]

                # 8 MCGRAW 8/1
DARK VADER has a very strong shot to take this race. Could provide positive gains based on respectable recent speed figures with an average of 78. Is a solid contender - given the 76 speed figure from his most recent race. Has very good Equibase Class Figures relative to this group - worth a look. TOTELLYOUTHETRUTH - Recent figs for the jockey - 24 win percent - make this gelding stand out in this group of horses. Has run solidly when travelling a dirt sprint race. MCGRAW - Well above average win rate at this distance/surface. Has strong Equibase Speed Figs and has to be considered for a bet in this competition.

I give my vote to HAWKS CREEK here. Ran a sharp last race. Reliable average speed figs in turf route races make this equine a key contender. This horse has a wonderful winning percentage in turf routes. D DAY REUNION - This jockey and handler team has produced some solid ROI numbers at this track. I would give my vote to this gelding on the jock and conditioner numbers alone. NATHANIEL'S HOPE - Martinez has him trained well to break speedily out of the gate.

                    Charles Town - Race #6 - Post: 9:21pm - Optional Claiming - 7.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $27,700 Class Rating: 91

                    Rating:

                    #2 FIVEFIVE SIX CHAMP (ML=6/1)
                    #1 MOTIVATING (ML=7/2)

FIVEFIVE SIX CHAMP - This jock and conditioner's horses have been generating a lucrative return on investment. Rider hops up aloft after getting to know the fine animal by riding last time around the track. That's always a helpful angle. Any early pace setter that is starting from the inside has a shot on this track. Should jump out of the gate and get good position versus this bunch. I usually like playing sprinters who are 3-4 races into a comeback. MOTIVATING - I like to wager on this angle, a pony coming back off a strong outing within the last thirty days. Trainer Jones moves this one to a lower class level to face weaker company. Look for a good race in this race. I like the piece of information that this gelding's last rating, 91, is tops in this bunch.

Vulnerable Contenders: #7 FUN LOVIN CRIMINAL (ML=3/1), #5 PIT STOP MAN (ML=4/1), #8 SISYPHUS (ML=9/2),

FUN LOVIN CRIMINAL - Hasn't hit the board in any sprint races recently. Doubtful to see him doing it this time out either. 3/1 is too low of a price to take on most any mount that has run poorly in back to back outings. Don't think this pony will make a winning move in today's event. That last speed fig was mediocre when compared with today's Equibase class figure. PIT STOP MAN - 93/81/74, are the decreasing Equibase speed figs for this mount. Improbable that the speed rating he registered on Jun 22nd will hold up in this affair. SISYPHUS - Hard to put any money on this gelding on the top end. Likes to hit the board though. A strong horse that's been running well, but he's been off the track in the mornings lately.

GUEST COMMENTARY: The Brain - MOTIVATING - After a layoff, has had a few races and today he enters a sprint race. Should be back in form, so I expect this one to perform well in this field.
