Race of the Week: Saturday's Lake George at Saratoga

    July 23, 2025 | By Jeremy Plonk

    The Lead:
Triple Crown series superstar Sovereignty headlines the marquee Saturday at Saratoga in the Jim Dandy Stakes, local prep to the Travers next month. That 5-horse affair includes Baeza and Sandman in challenge of the heavy favorite, while the undercard's Grade 3 $175,000 Lake George Stakes (Race 9) immediately precedes and will be a fantastic betting race. The Lake George re-matches the top 3 finishers from the Wild Applause Stakes over a mile at Saratoga on July 3, extending the trip an extra half-furlong.

Horseplayers with 1/ST BET and Xpressbet be sure to take advantage of the Bet $200, Get $20 promotion each racing day this week when you bet $100 for both Saratoga and Del Mar the same day.

    Field Depth:
Listed stakes winners CLASSIC Q and PLAY WITH FIRE are the only stakes winners in the field to this point, while DAISY FLYER is the only graded stakes-placed filly entered. There's no wide edge here in terms of strength of schedule, though ATERRADORA arguably comes out of the best series of races.

    Pace:
CLASSIC Q wired the Wild Applause and is the most likely pacemaker again in a race without much early tempo. LAVENDER DISASTER, PRINCESS ATTITUDE and GOOD LONG CRY are expected to press the leader.

    Our Eyes:
    Here are my horse-by-horse notes.

#1-REINING FLOWERS: Even effort behind odds-on favorite in Penn Mile when short field and slow pace didn't help her cause. Saves all the ground here under 4-time Lake George winner John Velazquez and note her best performances came over this turf course here in 2024.

#2-PRETTY LAVISH: Recent runner-up of Pimlico's Hilltop and Monmouth's Boiling Springs, she could give trainer Graham Motion a fourth win in the Lake George. He most notably won this race in 2003 with the fantastic Film Maker. Rallied a length shy of return rival Play With Fire in the Pimlico start and may not get a great pace set-up here. Still, excellent draw and she's on par with these.

#3-DAISY FLYER: Rusty Arnold trainee hasn't run since a Grade 3 Herecomesthebridge narrow third in March, her only start of 2025. She was inconsistent at age 2 and the daughter of Mshawish remains a question mark until she puts more on her form after that 87-1 placing more than 4 months ago. Arnold won this race in 2012 with Center Court.

#4-LAVENDER DISASTER: Chad Brown's streak of 5 straight Lake George victories came to a halt last year, but this is 1 of 2 chances he has to notch a record-padding eighth win overall in this race. Brown and Irad Ortiz Jr. have teamed for 3 of those victories and they've consistenly paired with this Into Mischief filly in all 4 career starts. Flat late in the Wild Applause, the additional ground may not work in her favor, though she did beat maidens over the trip last September.

#5-CLASSIC Q: Trainer Mark Casse had Chad Brown's Lake George number last year with Pounce and aims for back-to-back scores in this race. Classic Q led every jump of the Wild Applause as the 8-5 favorite and will be well-backed again under Jose Ortiz. The two worst results of her career were her only 2 starts beyond a mile in distance, so the concern is staying the trip.

#6-PRINCESS ATTITUDE: Drawn just outside Classic Q, this could be the key to the pace if Junior Alvarado decides to apply serious pressure. Frankel filly is just 1-for-7 but wasn't far off a couple of these when third in the Hilltop at Pimlico. She's never missed a superfecta, but it's the final yards that seem to get the best of her in terms of distance. Could be a no lead, no pass candidate.

#7-POOKIE: Dylan Davis piloted Pounce to victory in last year's Lake George and returns to his regular seat aboard this War Front filly for Tom Morley. Pookie was an even third in her only start since November, but did run similarly in her debut off of works and improve second out to post her only win in 4 career starts. Lacks early speed in a race without a lot of tempo help, but trending toward an improved effort.

#8-ALTERRADORA: Kentucky-based filly rallied to be second at Keeneland in allowance company before a pair of fourth-place Churchill efforts in the Grade 2 Edgewood and Grade 3 Regret. Those races were won by Nitrogen and Fionn, who would be solidly favored in this spot, so it's a reasonable assertion that she's dropping in class. She hasn't missed a superfecta in 7 starts and this barn won the 2013 Lake George with Kitten's Dumplings. May have to be closer to the pace than recent tries to be most effective in this scenario.

#9-GOOD LONG CRY: George Weaver trainee is 3: 0-0-1 in stakes bids and steps up in class off of synthetic and muddy main track efforts. Her best races have been close to the pace and look for jockey Luis Saez to use her early from a wide draw to gain some position. Don't see a race on her form yet that beats the best ones here.

#10-PLAY WITH FIRE: Chad Brown's dominance in this race was mentioned with barnmate Lavender Disaster. This one feels the strongest chance for his re-assertion in the Lake George as her BRIS late pace figure of 88 was 6 points better in the Wild Applause than both of her return rivals -- meaning the extra distance swings to her favor. Her 101 BRIS late pace figure in the Hilltop Stakes win at Pimlico is easily best of any runner in this field this year. The one to fear late under Manny Franco, which may help the price in the absence of Flavien Prat.

#11-KAY CUP (MTO): NY-bred exits a sprint stakes score and goes for the same Jorge Abreu barn whose filly Scottish Lassie ran a hole in the wind here in last week's Grade 1 CCA Oaks. Obvious front-end threat if race rained onto the main track.

    Most Likely Exotics Contender:
PLAY WITH FIRE is the race's strongest finisher and is 6-for-6 in the superfecta for a trainer that has dominated this race historically.

    Best Longshot Contender:
REINING FLOWERS is third off the layoff in her form cycle, which produced a win over this turf course last summer. Her career-best BRIS late pace figure (101) came on this course in the P.G. Johnson last year as well.

    Sending it in ($100 bankroll):
$40 exacta PLAY WITH FIRE over REINING FLOWERS. $30 exacta PLAY WITH FIRE over ALTERRADORA. $10 exacta part-wheel REINING FLOWERS, ALTERRADORA over PLAY WITH FIRE ($20). $10 daily double REINING FLOWERS to SOVEREIGNTY in the Jim Dandy.

Al Cimaglia: Adios Day Late Pick 4 Analysis

        July 26, 2025 | By Al Cimaglia

It's Adios Day at The Meadows and the 1st Post is 11:30 EDT. The Delvin L Miller Adios Pace for 3-year-old pacing colts is carded as Race 15 and it has a $385,000 purse. The 0.50 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 13. The sequence has a $15,000 guaranteed pool and it will be my focus. The Race 15 Trifecta pool is guaranteed at $35,000 and the Superfecta has a $15,000 guaranteed pool.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

        Race 13 (3:30 PM EDT)

2-Ringin The Captain (7-1)-Aaron Lambert colt has been in the hunt in both starts and gets a positive driver change in Andrew McCarthy. Has been bet in both PcD races and McCarthy wasn't driving but he did during a qualifier. Should offer a solid price after being odds-on in the last start and is in a spot to get a suck-around trip.
6-Ain'tplayinnice (5/2)-The Brian Brown barn is posting 30% winners over the last 30 days. Today's pilot Dave Palone steered in the last start, won despite broken equipment and led most of the mile. Tries Lasix for the 1st time and will use at most likely a short price. Has a race on this oval unlike others, and that shouldn't hurt.
7-Frantic Hanover (2-1)-Tim Tetrick qualified the Ron Burke entry twice in Kentucky and then won a PASS Stake at PcD. Today, the start will be key and will be in the hunt at the wire if lands in a decent seat when the wings fold.

        Race 14 (3:50 PM EDT)

4-Always Ana Hanover (3-1)-This Burke pupil has won 2 straight and 6 of 10 at Mea. Gets an edge with this post draw over some tough foes and has very good gate speed. The gals will be out and rolling and this one could be on the point.
5-Time Of The Season (5-1)-Tim Twaddle entry has good speed, looks versatile and that combo could be the winning difference. Dexter Dunn gets the nod and would expect the Bettor's Wish filly to be racing near the top of the stack.
8-Asphalt (5/2)-The Papi Rob colt has won 5 of 6 this year and posted a win in the only race at Mea. This would be the heavy program chalk from the inside. It would be best to not overlook, even with the outside post draw.

        Race 15 (4:10 PM EDT)

3-Twisted Destiny (2-1)-The Chris Ryder student has only made 14 career starts but has already established himself as a force. Has won 10 of 14 lifetime and 6 of 7 at the Meadows. Can take a picture going gate to wire or coming off cover. Dunn knows how to provide winning trip and should be tough with a smooth journey.
4-Swingtown (4-1)-The Burke standout has banked over $540,000 and has shined on large and small ovals. Really liked him last week and was surprised to get 8-1. Won't be that price here but should offer more value than the one above. Ronnie Wrenn steered last week, and he excels on smaller ovals. It wouldn't be shock if this colt makes it 3 in a row.

        Race 16 (4:30 PM EDT)

3-Principle Interest (6/5)-Will need to go chalk-chalk in a race without much form. Will lean toward those who have won their share at The Meadows in the past. Drops to a soft spot, Dave Palone gets the nod and the 4-year-old is overdue for a win. Its Meadows record is (12-5-4-0) and could try to wire this crew.
5-Dragon City (2-1)-This veteran also does good work at Mea (48-11-6-11) and has beaten better here at the end of May. Faded in last against tougher and now drops to a spot to shine with a smooth journey.

        $1 Late Pick 4

        2,6,7/4,5,8/3,4/3,5
        Total Bet=$36

Meet the Contenders: Saturday's Jim Dandy at Saratoga

          July 25, 2025 | By Bailey Armour

Named for the horse to defeat 1930 Triple Crown winner Gallant Fox by eight lengths in the Travers Stakes at odds of 100-1, this year’s Jim Dandy at the Spa features some of the best horses in training that we’ve seen in years. It’s all headlined by Kentucky Derby-winning superstar Sovereignty alongside the Derby’s third-place finisher Baeza. They’ll break from the gate at 5:41 pm ET along with three other contenders.

Horseplayers can take advantage of our bicoastal Bet $200, Get $20 offer all weekend long from Saratoga and Del Mar, where you can earn a $20 bonus when you wager $100+ on each track.

Let’s Meet the Contenders for the Jim Dandy (Race 10):

#1 BAEZA: Coast-to-coast shipper for C R K Stable and trainer John Shirreffs finds himself back east again for Saturday’s race. He drew into the Derby seemingly on a fluke after a flurry of scratches but proved himself deserving of the spot, putting down two third-place efforts behind Sovereignty and Journalism, respectively, in the Derby and Belmont. Some impressive works at Santa Anita post-Belmont have kept him sharp, but he’ll lose regular rider Flavien Prat, who catches a flight west for the Bing Crosby, and instead returns to Hector Berrios, who held the mount for three starts earlier this year.

#2 SANDMAN: Enter Sandman with blinkers this time, off a 70-day layoff after the Preakness where he closed sharply on Journalism and 19-1 longshot Gosger. Mark Casse has kept him in training here at Saratoga for quite some time and has included the blinkers in his recent workouts, which can be seen on 1/ST TV. Jose Ortiz gets the callback this time and will be looking for his second win aboard the gray.

#3 MO PLEX: Front-running Mo Plex will look to set the pace here with New York stalwart Manny Franco and has never been off the board in eight career starts. He pressed the pace in his last start, the Grade 3 Ohio Derby, to win by two over Kentucky Derby alumnus Chunk of Gold. This modest $45K OBS 2-year-old purchase tries to pull off the upset at a nice price.

#4 HILL ROAD: A promising juvenile last year who rallied for third in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at 61-1 odds, Hill Road from the barn of New York regular Chad Brown will have something to prove against this field. He teams up again with Irad Ortiz, Jr. who’s tearing up the Saratoga meet this year with over 30% wins, including a four-win day Thursday. Saturday’s 1-1/8 miles trip gives him a shorter run at the leaders, which could work in his favor if the pace is faster, given his shortcomings in catching them in the Belmont over 10 furlongs.

#5 SOVEREIGNTY: Bill Mott has selected his spots for this horse with careful acumen, and this particular race is no different. Mott is no stranger to the winner’s circle, having won this race four times in his career, with owner Godolphin taking home the spoils three times, most recently with 2021’s Essential Quality (trained by Brad Cox). He’s almost impossible to beat in his current form and the only horse that could’ve, Journalism, just flew back to the west coast after winning the Haskell. Getting a strong closing rally along with an impossibly short price from Sovereignty is as sure as cornbread crumbles.

            Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

            Del Mar - Race #8
#1 Midnight Mammoth He's probably not in the next guy's league right now, but he's in the best form of his career and ran well behind a good one last time out. Needs his A++ game today, but maybe with a cozy trip.
#2 Nysos His only loss came at the hands of a really nice one in one of the toughest races of the year, and he came out of that with another powerhouse score last out. The clear one to beat.
#7 Judge Miller He landed a few shares in tough spots last year but is meeting a deeper crew here today. Think he's a bit of a reach for top honors, but he's capable of something obviously better than that last one.
Race Summary Midnight Mammoth should offer a good price while in career form, and if Nysos somehow doesn't land this, 'Mammoth is as good as any of these right now.
            Del Mar - Race #9
#2 Imaboutago Speed comes back fresh in a spot that doesn't have a ton of serious frontrunners lined up. Could be in the frame from the first jump with Pushiness prompting the whole way.
#10 Pushiness She'll be a bit shorter number than the top choice, but she's a player while drawing a perfect attack post for her pace. She'll take it to the top choice early either way.
#7 Spicybug She comes out of a pretty good Saratoga spot and might find a pretty good place to watch the top two settle the early score. Tactical enough to avoid having too much to do.
Race Summary Imaboutago is quick enough to get in the mix early here, and she could find enough in the tank if she's able to shake free from Pushiness in the lane.
            Del Mar - Race #11
#4 Rexford There is actually some decent turf sprint form on his page, and he might settle into a perfect spot while tracking a couple of more committed forward players. Would love to see him watch that all unfold from about two lengths back.
#2 Adios Cole Considered him on top with this crew and think he's one of the more realistic ones today while getting some class relief. He can hit hard here with his baseline.
#1 Suchet Would want him on the multi-race plays for this closeout leg, as the form is pretty reliable, and I like that he's got some recent form on his page, too.
Race Summary Wouldn't argue too hard with anyone taking #6 Flyover here off a couple of sharp scores to open his career -- should be fun to watch him again up top.

              Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

              Delaware Park - Race #4
#5 RAGING CAJUN (7-2) Holds tactical advantage, has to carry speed farther in second start.
#3 LET’S GO LANDO (5-2) Backed off slow pace, ran third as beaten favorite for the second time.
#4 MISTER ROSCOE (2-1) Ranged up 4-wide, finished 2 lengths behind ‘Lando’ in his debut.
Race Summary RAGING CAJUN ran to his gate workouts in his debut but got locked in a duel on the rail and finished out of the money. He draws a better post and should take some catching in his second go-round. Bet to win and place and play 5-3 and 5-4 exactas.
              Delaware Park - Race #5
#3 IZZY SWEET GIRL(4-1) Has the speed to get loose, but can she get the extra distance?
#4 MAGICA (3-1) Motion-trained firster was $100k sales buy and has good foundation of works.
#1 SUITEFOURFOURTHREE (10-1) Piling up the checks, burning a lot of money, slow starts the problem.
Race Summary IZZY SWEET GIRL dueled and just missed in a pair of turf sprints on firm footing at the Fair Grounds. She raced evenly on soft footing in her local debut, but could be long gone in this field if she gets the added distance. Bet to win and place and play 3-1 and 3-4 exactas.
              Delaware Park - Race #8
#1 CREATIVE COPY (8-1) Changes address often but just keeps on winning at her best distance.
#2 ANONYMOUSLY (6-1) Had good set-up, finished second for third time in a row sprinting.
#7 R AVERIE LYNN (4-1) Good speed, moves inside out, tries to end run as beaten fave in three straight.
Race Summary CREATIVE COPY won for four different trainers this year and is ideally spotted off the claim to try and do it again. She bid on the turn but was no match for runaway favorite Mended We Stand (7-37, $179k) while carrying 125 pounds at Parx last out. Bet to win and place and play 1-2, 1-5 and 1-7 exactas.

COMMENTS: NYSOS is a neck from being undefeated in six races. EXPRESS TRAIN is moving up the speed ladder and has a bunch of solid works getting ready for today. JUDGE MILLER rarely makes two starts in a row and should improve here. MIRAHMADI will go to the front and try to stay there from start to finish.

COMMENTS: PUSHINESS is less than a length from winning three of three on grass and cutting back in distance here could be the answer. IMABOUTAGO is wire to wire or nothing in her five starts winning three of them. UNCORKED usually comes off the sidelines ready to compete and her workouts suggest today will be the same. SPICYBUG drops from a Grade II in her first race in more than a year.

COMMENTS: DR VENKMAN makes the third start in a row for the first time boom or bust coming. HEJAZI is another that can boom or bust making the second start after more than a year off. WORLD RECORD hit the board in five of five at the distance. ROLL ON BIG JOE ran a little faster in his last and has two solid works since.

COMMENTS: CLASSIC Q could be the pacesetter and is very likely to catch a favorable pace. LAVENDER DISASTERs last race much better than it looks with faster fractions. PLAY WITH FIREs resume says this Chad Brown horse should be marginally better in the second start after a layoff. REINING FLOWERS is a longshot that could have won both at the distance and surface if not for a few excuses.

COMMENTS: SOVEREIGNTY walloped just about every horse in here. MO PLEX could snatch this one on the lead with four speed figure increases in a row. SANDMAN won his lone race at Saratoga and at the only at the distance. BAEZA hit triple digit speed numbers in the last three and might switch up tactics today.

                            # 3 BODACIOUS TRICKSTER 7/2
LIL RIDER looks like the bet in here. Her 73 average has this filly with among the best Equibase Speed Figures for this event. Martinez will probably be able to get this filly to break out early for this race. Could best this field based on the speed figure - 76 - of her last outing. KGS WISH - Overall, this conditioner has been money-making at this distance/surface. Could best this field based on the speed fig - 70 - of her last effort. BODACIOUS TRICKSTER - Has been racing admirably and has among the best speed in the race for today's distance. He has a respectable distance/surface win record - 3 for 13.

                              # 3 HIGHRISEINTHEPEG 12/1
                              # 5 CRAZY STORM 8/5
                              # 1 STREETLIGHT PEOPLE 6/5
HIGHRISEINTHEPEG looks to be the bet in here and the potential return justifies the dangerous nature of the long odds. Has very good Equibase Speed Figures and has to be considered for a wager in this contest. Has been running in the most competitive company of the group of horses recently. With a strong 69 average speed rating at the distance, seems well suited for today's race. CRAZY STORM - Looks formidable against this group and will almost certainly be one of the leaders. Must be given consideration here if only for the quite good Equibase Speed Fig recorded in the last contest. STREETLIGHT PEOPLE - Will most likely be one of the leaders of the pack going into the midpoint of the outing. Could beat this field given the 70 Equibase speed fig put up in his last outing.
