    Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

Presque Isle Downs - Race #4
#3 King Reigert He just finished first with similar but got taken down for some bad behavior, and a similar kind of effort would do the trick here today. Think he's tough if he can shake off the guy just outside of him at some point.
#1 Grand Morning Disappointing run from him last time out, but the price may be playable again today while trying to get back to some of those local races from last season that would be competitive. Expecting better.
#7 Frozen Four There are a handful of races on his page that would be tough here while trying this level for the first time, but I don't love the way the form is heading right now. No surprises here.
Race Summary King Reigert is probably not going to offer his 3/1 ML price here, but I think he's going to be tough after moving forward nicely when sent two turns for the first time last out.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #7
#1 Prince of Ayrshire Class is a bit of a question for him right now, but he is in really good form after turning in a pair of wins in claiming and starter company. Don't think this is the deepest local spot for the level, so he's a good fit.
#3 Anchises He's another looking for a third score in a row while stepping up, and he should find a perfect spot right up on the spits today. One of the ones.
#5 Maximum Faith He got put up to graduate in the comeback run, and he has already proven to be reliable enough going long here. Has some upside in the second start back. Could land it.
Race Summary Prince of Ayrshire is one of a few interesting faces in this spot, and I think he and Anchises both found the right kind of race to rise for this condition.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #8
#1 Van He should appreciate getting back down a step in class to the level where he was competitive earlier this season, and the winner of his last was right back to score again.
#5 Brumba Waffle Toes Would like to have seen just a touch more from him in those last few starts when getting back over a course he has liked in the past. Still, he has not seen this easy a local spot in a long time and could land it on a current baseline run anyway.
#8 Burning Leaves Not entirely sure what to do with him in here -- he can be unreliable, but there are some races on the page that fit for higher prices than this. Capable, I'm just not excited enough about any of it to line up here.
Race Summary Van may be an OK price on the board even while dropping out of a good race, and I don't really trust the other pair listed above who both fit but don't inspire a ton with recent form.

      Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

      Horseshoe Indianapolis - Race #2
#7 WEDGE (8-1) Got the jump on odds-on fave, drew clear late in shorter sprint to start career.
#5 ASHKENAZI (5-2) Claimed from top 2yo barn after romp at Churchill in May, takes on the boys.
#6 LONGSTRIDER (2-1) Tested stakes waters after winning debut rally at 18-1 odds.
Race Summary Taking a price shot on Wedge, who rallied in early stretch, cleared the 23-1 pace setter and edged away from the 4-to-5 favorite, who came back to win. He will have speedy filly ASHKENAZI to run down today but gets an extra furlong to do it. Bet to win and place.
      Horseshoe Indianapolis - Race #3
#11 FOUNTAIN RUN (4-1) Class drops again, moves inside out, but figures tough on best.
#4 MONEY MEMOLO (6-1) Gets class relief, tries to upstage several in-the-money finishes.
#12 LIQUOR TALK (9-2) Rallied into fast pace while 4-wide from outside post, finished second.
Race Summary FOUNTAIN RUN looks best on paper, save for fading as the favorite last out at Colonial Downs in a route race dominated by closers. The fractions stacked up favorably with a few other grass routes on the outer turf that same day. He runs for the cheapest tag of his career and adds blinkers, but he has post 11 to contend with. Bet to win and place and play an 11/4, 12/ALL trifecta.
      Horseshoe Indianapolis - Race #6
#6 FOREVER GREEDY (7-2) Romped to maiden win on route-to-sprint move, lures De La Cruz.
#5 KEG (5-2) In top form, cross-entered in stakes race Wednesday but likely to run here.
#8 INCLINED (4-1) Late foot against pair of next-out repeaters, third start of cycle.
Race Summary FOREVER GREEDY followed the move of KEG in their first allowance test but flattened out as the favorite in a longer route race. He picks up De La Cruz to ride and could turn the tables at a better price at one mile. Bet to win and place and play a 5-6-8 exacta box.

Race 6 - Optional Claiming - 6.0f on the Dirt. Purse: $20000 Class Rating: 87

FOR ACCREDITED WEST VIRGINIA-BRED THREE YEAR OLDS AND UPWARD WHICH HAVE NEVER WON FOUR RACES OR WHICH HAVE NOT WON A RACE SINCE JULY 29, 2024 OR CLAIMING $6,500. THREE YEAR OLDS, 119 LBS.; OLDER, 123 LBS. NON-WINNERS OF A RACE SINCE JUNE 29 ALLOWED 3 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $6,500

            # 5 ROBBIELIKESHIM 2/1
            # 6 RIVER WARRIOR RVF 7/2
            # 4 SHY GUY 5/1
I think ROBBIELIKESHIM is a strong choice. Is a strong contender based on figures garnered recently under today's conditions. Runco has him trained admirably to break quickly out of the gate. Put up a very good Equibase Speed Fig last time out. RIVER WARRIOR RVF - Runco has a strong winning percentage with horses racing in dirt sprint races. SHY GUY - Is difficult not to consider given the company run in lately. Is a solid choice - given the 75 speed figure from his most recent race.

              Race 4 - Claiming - 5.5f on the Dirt. Purse: $14000 Class Rating: 82

FOR THREE YEAR OLDS AND UPWARD WHICH HAVE NOT WON A RACE SINCE JANUARY 29, 2025 OR WHICH HAVE NEVER WON FOUR RACES. THREE YEAR OLDS, 120 LBS.; OLDER, 124 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $5,000

              # 5 MAX FOSTER 4/1
              # 3 REBEL EMPIRE 5/2
              # 4 BROCKMONINOFF 3/1
MAX FOSTER looks to be a strong contender. Could best this field based on the speed rating - 82 - of his last affair. Has to be carefully examined versus this group of horses displaying very strong figs recently and an average Equibase speed fig of 71 under similar conditions. Has longshot potential and could score at a big price. REBEL EMPIRE - He should be given consideration given the solid speed figures. Must be considered a solid contender on earnings per start at the distance/surface alone. BROCKMONINOFF - Has to be given consideration against this field displaying competitive figures lately and an average speed rating of 72 under similar conditions. Win percentage under similar conditions may be the key for this gelding.

                Presque Isle Downs - Race #8 - Post: 6:39pm - Claiming - 8.3 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $11,000 Class Rating: 79

                Rating:

                #2 ERLAN (ML=5/1)
                #5 BRUMBA WAFFLE TOES (ML=5/2)

ERLAN - Great chance for this racer. Big late speed and should have good position. With a big class drop in class figure points from his Jul 21st race at Presque Isle Downs. Based on that valuable data, I will give this thoroughbred the advantage. BRUMBA WAFFLE TOES - Was in an $8,000 Claiming race at Presque Isle Downs in the last race. That race had a class rating of 87 and he is moving down in today's race. A certain contender. I like the fact that this gelding's last speed rating, 81, is tops in this field.

                Vulnerable Contenders: #9 SILVER STYLE (ML=3/1), #8 BURNING LEAVES (ML=9/2), #3 KING NATE (ML=6/1),

SILVER STYLE - Finished fourth on Jul 7th after the extended rest time. Doubtful if there will be a reversal of fortune in this clash. Awfully difficult to wager on this entrant when he hasn't been showing any indications of eagerness recently. BURNING LEAVES - This questionable contender will have a tough time winning this 1 mile 70 yards dirt race. He just doesn't win races very often. Improbable that the speed figure he notched on July 13th will be good enough in this event. KING NATE - 6/1 odds isn't enough for this thoroughbred when examining the most recent showings.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Hal - BRUMBA WAFFLE TOES - Registering a speed figure of 79 two back and then following up with a rating of 81 last race on Jun 24th, this gelding is ready to do some damage.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: #2 ERLAN to win at post-time odds of 9/5 or better
                EXACTA WAGERS: Box [2,5]

                  Thistledown - Race #8 - Post: 4:20pm - Claiming - 8.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $12,600 Class Rating: 85

                  Rating:

                  #2 RAMSEY (ML=4/1)

RAMSEY - Chavez and Castillo perform well when they team up. It's hard to beat a +447 return on investment for a jockey and trainer. This gelding is certainly on the improve with speed figs of 65, 73, 83 last three out.

Vulnerable Contenders: #5 MASTER OF THE NITE (ML=7/2), #4 BOURBON WISDOM (ML=9/2), #9 SUDDEN SHIFT (ML=5/1),

MASTER OF THE NITE - This questionable contender hasn't been on the track since Jun 30th. Not even any morning drills. BOURBON WISDOM - The speed rating in the last race doesn't fit very well in this event when I look at the class figure of today's contest. Mark this thoroughbred as a questionable contender. SUDDEN SHIFT - Didn't look like a winner last time. Probably won't do much running in today's event.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #2 RAMSEY to win if we can get at least 1/1 odds
