    Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

Presque Isle Downs - Race #2
#1 Gruit I have taken a handful of chances with this guy at huge prices before and am willing to do it again today. He turned in a very fast (by his standards) workout since the comeback run, and I'm hoping that means he's sitting on better today. Swing in a bad race.
#5 Up In Time All signs point in the right direction as he goes for the new barn today and gets Morales up, but I have my doubts -- he was 3/2 on the board against four others in the debut at this same level and finished up the track with only brief tracking pace. The guy just inside of him might keep him honest enough?
#3 Michaelshatrick He has had plenty of chances, but there are a couple races on his page that might do the trick here, including that two-back try at this level. Could drop for the win today.
Race Summary Gruit is not very good and doesn't have any real pace in a spot without much early lick, but this is a really underwhelming group and I think he has a couple races in his back catalogue that would do the job today.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #4
#4 Yes I'm Jess He got that looping wide trip in the debut against cheaper that can leave horses flat late, and I think he's going to be able to sustain that kind of run better with that first try under his belt. Think he's going to handle these with any upside. Lean on him on the rise.
#5 St. Emilon He's the main danger, but he split a small group at first asking and needs more in the late stages today. Obvious player, but I'm hoping the top choice will be a slightly better number on the board.
#1 Pancho Slips Away Speed has come up short at modest prices in all three starts so far, but he's got some pace that can be dangerous from the fence if he can shake free at some point.
Race Summary Yes I'm Jess steps up off a really nice debut try with a cheaper group, but I don't think he's finding the deepest spot for the level here today. Check out #6 Final Scene in the parade -- not super excited about him on paper, but could be swayed to include him.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #8
#8 Night Nurse I'm not entirely confident about the new trip today, but she's got a miler kind of pedigree that might get her around two turns, and she has stretchout pace to sit a perfect trip up top. Would love to see her get first jump.
#6 Sip'n' Speed She's tough with something like her last, but she was also 4/5 that day and no serious threat late. Price figures to be on the unappealing side again today, and I think you're allowed to look around here.
#3 Tartan Green No clue what you're supposed to do with her here, but there are definitely a couple of races on her page that would put her in the frame with these.
Race Summary Night Nurse could get a great run of things from the outside here while moving around two turns, and I'm hoping Sip'n' Speed will take enough cash to keep the price interesting enough.

      Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

      Horseshoe Indianapolis - Race #2
#8 SHIELDMEWITHPRAYER (6-1) Forward threat from favorable post, kept good company, today’s Best Bet.
#9 OUTLAW WOMAN (3-1) Steady check-getter also class drops and should be in prime stalking position.
#3 SUNNY’S FLAME (9-2) Drew away to popular maiden win at 5-1/2F, rivals today are 1-for-30 at 6F.
Race Summary SHIELDMEWITHPRAYER figures tough on the class drop for her third start this year. She dueled through fast fractions before the repeat winner passed by in the stretch two starts back, then offered a mild 4-wide rally for third in a 5-1/2F sprint won by Sakra’s Quest (3-7, $65k), who won an allowance by 7-1/4 lengths here last Thursday. Bet to win and place and play an 8-9 exacta and 8-9-ALL trifecta.
      Horseshoe Indianapolis - Race #4
#8 GLISTENING GAL (10-1) Debuted in monster race, tired in rapid-paced return, gets second-time Lasix.
#2 ELEMIAH (2-1) Makes first start in Cox barn off trio of 5F bullet workouts at Keeneland.
#1 CYAWOULDNTWANABEYA(6-5) Rallied into photo-finish view on fast and sloppy track at distance.
Race Summary GLISTENING GAL disputed a :44.1 pace in her seasonal debut but tired to finish out of the money. She was made the 4-to-5 favorite off her debut last fall, leading at the stretch call in a race that blossomed into a gangbuster. Echo Sound is a multiple Grade 3 winner with a $464k bankroll, while Evanescence is Grade 2 placed and Sweet Seraphine won the Wilton Stakes at Aqueduct. Bet to win and place and play 8-1 and 8-2 exactas.
      Horseshoe Indianapolis - Race #6
#7 J’S NAUGHTY KITTEN (4 Better post increases her tactical advantage in second long-distance test.
#10 MIDNIGHT CAPER (8-1) Improved with Lasix, will be gunning it from post 10, use in gimmicks.
#4 GONNAGETCHAGETCHA (7-2) 3yo rallied for 1-2-3 finishes in her last four route races.
Race Summary Not much speed in this crowded one-mile allowance for Indiana breds. That suits J’s NAUGHTY KITTEN just fine after she salvaged early position from post 11, rallied to lead at the stretch call and got beat 2 lengths in a longer turf-to-dirt route race. Bet to win and place and play a 7-ALL exacta.

STYNER is my choice. The rapid return to the races points to a sound effort this time around. Formidable average speed figures in dirt route races make this equine a key contender. Exhibits the look of a lucrative play, averaging a solid 86 speed fig which is one of the strongest in this group. CRYPTO CAUSEWAY - Decent shot today on Lasix. This jockey and handler team has produced some sharp return on investment numbers at this track. ROYAL SUSPECT - Make a note that this horse runs with second time Lasix today. Well above average win rate at this distance/surface.

Presque Isle Downs - Race #2 - Post: 3:57pm - Maiden Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $13,000 Class Rating: 58

              Rating:

              #3 MICHAELSHATRICK (ML=5/1)

MICHAELSHATRICK - Faced tougher in the last race at Presque Isle Downs. Based on Equibase class figures, this is a weaker bunch, so I will put this horse on my list of contenders.

Vulnerable Contenders: #5 UP IN TIME (ML=5/2), #4 FAST LEARNER (ML=3/1), #7 SHOOT THE WAVES (ML=7/2),

UP IN TIME - Tough to bet on any less than sharp equine in a sprint race if he hasn't hit the board in a sprint in the last two months. This runner gave a less than rousing performance last time finishing fifth. Don't see any hint of any change in today's event. FAST LEARNER - I can't play this perpetual non-winner. Gets the job completed occasionally. I'd like to see more hospitable recent efforts with oddsmaker's morning line of 3/1. SHOOT THE WAVES - No success for this questionable contender in a sprint race over the last couple months tells me that this gelding is in a very difficult situation This gelding finished off the board on Jun 9th and wasn't close to victory in the last race either.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Have to go with #3 MICHAELSHATRICK on the win end if we get at least 1/1 odds
              EXACTA WAGERS: Pass
              TRIFECTA WAGERS: Skip

                Mountaineer Park - Race #4 - Post: 8:15pm - Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $8,300 Class Rating: 70

                Rating:

                #4 SAILING ALONG (ML=8/1)
#3 BETSY IS THE CODE (ML=5/2)
                #9 UTTERLY ENCHANTING (ML=10/1)
                #6 THINK IT THRU (ML=4/1)

SAILING ALONG - Bracho is right back for another event today after racing atop this horse for the 1st time on July 16th and ought to know the ropes to this one a little better. This mare is rounding her way back into shape. Should perform well today. Ranks number one in the field in EPS (earnings per start). A strong effort in this field will add to that bankroll. BETSY IS THE CODE - Sprinters that come back to the races quickly are generally good plays. Have to make this mare a contender; she comes off a nice effort on July 30th. The last speed figure of 70 is the top last race speed figure in the group. UTTERLY ENCHANTING - This mare should be in fine condition, this far into her form cycle. THINK IT THRU - I really like sprinters that make a quick turnaround. When this rider and conditioner combine forces you have to take a look. Barbaran and Meyers have been fabulous together. This mare is in exceptional physical condition right now. Ended up first last race out and comes back quickly.

Vulnerable Contenders: #1 HIDDEN IDENTITY (ML=9/2), #7 ROWDY DAISY (ML=6/1),

HIDDEN IDENTITY - Going to have a difficult go of it with all the other early foot in this event. ROWDY DAISY - A bit of a lackluster try when this mare finished fifth.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: #4 SAILING ALONG to win at post-time odds of 4/1 or better
                EXACTA WAGERS: Box [3,4,9]
                TRIFECTA WAGERS: Pass

                  # 2 PLAYGROUND WARRIOR 2/1
                  # 1 LAST RETURN 10/1
I think about TOWER GROVE PARK here. His 51 average has this gelding with among the best Equibase Speed Figures for this event. Bettors ought to note that this racer runs with second time Lasix today. Becker has a strong 22 percent win rate with entries running at this distance and surface. PLAYGROUND WARRIOR - Giles has been on fire the last month, winning at a nifty 21 percent clip. Will more than likely be one of the front-runners of the group going into the midpoint of the race. LAST RETURN - Must be given consideration given the class of races run recently. Looks very good to be close to the lead at the first call.
