Jeremy Plonk: Saratoga Spot Plays | Wednesday, August 6, 2025

    August 5, 2025 | By Jeremy Plonk

The racing week at Saratoga gets underway with a 9-race card that features the $150,000 Birdstone Stakes. That 1-3/4 miles dirt marathon goes as Race 7 and is part of a late pick 4 that includes split divisions of a turf sprint maiden special weight that really has my attention.

    Saratoga | Race 6 | 3:55 pm ET

#10 Great Actress (4-1 morning line odds) exits an important race where the June 29 winner already has come back to run a good third in Monmouth's Colleen Stakes. This filly has had 3 workouts since that start and has been more active in the morning than likley favorite Devlish Grin, who finished just ahead of her last out. Great Actress may have a bigger improvement in store for her. Win bet #10.

    Saratoga | Race 9 | 5:44 pm ET

#1 Neshika (10-1 morning line odds) comes out of the same important June 29 race that we think will have a major impact on Race 6. Tab the results of that one to measure some confidence coming into this race. Neshika made a decent middle-move in that race from a rail draw and has that same spot again. But note trainer Mike Maker's barn has been red-hot in recent weeks at Saratoga and expect improvement after a busy workout regimen. Win-place bet #1.

      Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

Presque Isle Downs - Race #4
#6 Rock Tune She's one of many in here who have already had a lot of chances, but she has some room to come forward just a bit while getting back around two turns here. Slight edge in a competitive race.
#4 Courageous Ari Forward player stayed well enough last time out and has generally been competitive here. One of the ones, but I'd want something a touch better than the 9/5 offering from last time around.
#5 Little Miss Munny Think it's got to be graduation day for one of these career types, and she's another with a claim on this one. She's tactical enough to find a good spot while in touch throughout.
Race Summary Think you can take a pick of a few of them in this spot where the main players have similar profiles. Suppose #2 Starship Legacy has a little bit of appeal in here, too.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #6
#9 Bengal Cat Outside pace has had some chances, but he should be the controlling tempo from out here in a spot where a couple of the main players want to relax just a bit early.
#7 Lets Get It On Take a look at this one on the tote and track ahead of this -- I don't feel like anyone will be writing about this spot years from now, so he's not going to have to be a star to play with these right out of the box.
#2 Double Up Larry Reliable type has an established baseline that fits well enough in here, but he tends to be just a bit one paced late. Could settle again.
Race Summary There are a few other logical players lined up in this one that aren't listed above, but I think the price might be interesting enough on Bengal Cat to see if he can attack from the outside and score.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #8
#6 Jazz Time Girl Tactical pace has turned in a couple duds in a row, but she's not too far removed from some races that would keep her in the picture here at a midrange kind of price.
#2 Old Fashioned Girl She has been in with some better groups and ran OK here earlier this year for three times this price. Better stuff would do the job.
#1 Cat One She can show some speed from the inside here while making her second start of the summer, and her last suggests she found a good fit at this kind of level.
Race Summary Jazz Time Girl may be an OK price in here with some room to bounce back. There are tries on her page from last year that would be good enough to compete here.

        Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

        Delaware Park - Race #1
#5 DANCING DENAE (3-1) Met pair of well-meant debut runners when he finished second.
#1 STONECOLDHANDSOME (4-1) Recent gate works indicate readiness for his first start.
#7 MAC DADDYNESS (2-1) Five lengths behind ‘Denae’ in debut, Ness 20 percent with 2yo maiden claimers.
Race Summary DANCING DENAE finished second in both of his starts for a claiming tag. He was no match for a 1-to-2 first-time starter in his debut or to a runaway 3-to-1 shot in his latest start. His experience could pay off with a victory today. Bet to win and place.
        Delaware Park - Race #2
#3 CANDY FOR CARMEL (6-1) Right set-up, right price to make a run at ending winless drought.
#4 INDULGE (4-1) Parlayed late foot into 7/3-1-2 record in last seven starts, all going a route of ground.
#7 FIGHTERTOWN (2-1) Good first gear, good one-mile slate, claimed for $20k six weeks ago.
Race Summary CANDY FOR CARMEL seeks his first win since 2023, but he’s a steady mid-60 Beyer type, sheds 7 pounds and could reverse a 2-1/4-length loss to KICK STARTNESS with the added pace presence of FIGHTERTOWN in the race. Bet to win and place and play 3-7 and 4-7 daily doubles.
        Delaware Park - Race #3
#7 ALRASIKH (9-5) Exited MSW ranks, battled fave to the wire, forward factor again with blinkers.
#9 PARLAY FOR DESTINY (12-1) Rallied from far back, been trying to get on turf, price attached.
#4 ARJAY (6-1) Leads for as far as he goes, lacked stretch kick in pair of well-bet tries.
Race Summary ALRASIKH just missed after a stretch-long duel with the favorite in the same spot on a ‘soft’ turf. But he showed improved speed with blinkers in his seasonal debut and can use it well today, likely tracing pace-setting threat ARJAY. Bet to win and place and play 7-4 and 7-9 exactas.

              # 8 LORING PARK 6/1
              # 1 PAPA RIZZO 10/1
My choice in here is WODETON (FR) especially at a such a nice price. This pony could stun this field at a decent number. He has formidable class ratings, averaging 99, and has to be given consideration for this event. He has been running quite well and the Equibase Speed Figures are among the best in this group of animals. LORING PARK - Lately Bethke has provided risk takers with a strong winning percentage with horses racing in turf route races. Has to be given a chance based on the very good Equibase Speed Fig posted in the last contest. PAPA RIZZO - Looks formidable to be on the front end at the first call.

                Mountaineer Park - Race #5 - Post: 8:40pm - Claiming - 2.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $11,000 Class Rating: 71

                Rating:

                #3 DEVIN ON EARTH (ML=6/1)
                #6 CAN SHE SCOOT (ML=8/1)

DEVIN ON EARTH - I have to like this mare's chances at the shorter distance. Don't throw this horse out due to her last race at Mountaineer Park where she ran seventh on a track listed as good. Should improve this time around. CAN SHE SCOOT - To play a thoroughbred off drills, you have to know when to tell if a horse is fit. The fact that this mare worked recently at longer distance is a positive angle. Last raced at Mountaineer Park carrying 6 lbs more. The lower weight in this event should serve her well. Horse has improved at least two speed rating points in last 2 races. I look for that trend to continue in this event.

                Vulnerable Contenders: #1 CASTLE LIGHTS (ML=9/5), #5 MISS NUCKOLS (ML=5/2), #4 GOLDEN NOLE (ML=4/1),

CASTLE LIGHTS - When any horse improves so much on a sloppy track, I have to be a little shy about her next time out. This low class level animal may have a tough time rebounding off of two tough stretch runs. MISS NUCKOLS - Speed kills. Plenty of zip in this affair compromises this horse's efforts. GOLDEN NOLE - This less than sharp equine didn't do too much last time finishing fourth. Don't see any hint of a reversal of fortune today. Don't believe this entrant will make a winning move in today's event. That last speed figure was somewhat easily forgotten when compared with today's class rating.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Go with #3 DEVIN ON EARTH on top if we're getting at least 8/5 odds
                EXACTA WAGERS: Box [3,6]

QUARTER HORSE 300Y, FOR THREE YEAR OLDS AND UPWARD WITH AN AVERAGE SPEED INDEX OF 85 AND UNDER OR WITH A SPEED INDEX THAT HAS NEVER BEEN BETTER THAN 90.
                  RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                  # 2 THE GINGERBREAD MANN 7/2
                  # 6 PRETTY RUNAWAY 10/1
                  # 5 IVY LEAGUE SUGARBABY 5/1
THE GINGERBREAD MANN is the most competitive bet in this race. Has been close at the finish most every time lately. Has run solidly when running a short race. He must be given a chance given the very strong speed figs. PRETTY RUNAWAY - She has been running admirably and the Equibase speed figs are among the most favorable in this field. Has some interesting angles which make this horse a play. IVY LEAGUE SUGARBABY - Looks respectable versus this group of horses in this race and will almost certainly be one of the front-runners. Had one of the strongest Equibase Speed Figures of this group in her last race.

                    Louisiana Downs - Race #6 - Post: 6:25pm - Claiming - 6.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $8,500 Class Rating: 73

                    Rating:

                    #4 SHE'S EXTRA (ML=2/1)

SHE'S EXTRA - This filly likes to be near the lead. Today's event is a shorter distance and should enhance her chances to win. Looking at today's class rating, this campaigner is meeting an easier group than last out at Louisiana Downs.

                    Vulnerable Contenders: #5 SISTER SAINT (ML=5/2), #3 RADIANT REBEL (ML=3/1), #6 LEXINGTON DIVA (ML=4/1),

SISTER SAINT - Difficult to bet on at 5/2 odds after the most recent showings. RADIANT REBEL - This horse likes to hit the board, but doesn't usually win. Leave out of the top spot. This runner ran a run-of-the-mill speed figure last time around the track. She shouldn't run much better and will likely lose in today's race running that figure. LEXINGTON DIVA - You believe this horse is going to be first just because she's always close. Just doesn't win frequently. This sustainer will probably be rolling down the lane much too late to make a mark in this event.

GUEST COMMENTARY: The Brain - SHE'S EXTRA - My calculated data would suggest that some type of wager is indeed necessary given the lone early speed that this horse should demonstrate against this bunch.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #4 SHE'S EXTRA to win if you can get at least 1/1 odds
