Al Cimaglia: Hoosier Park Dan Patch Late Pick 4 Analysis

    August 8, 2025 | By Al Cimaglia

    XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
The Dan Patch Stakes is the main event on the 15-race Hoosier Park card. My lean is toward the two 2nd tier starters,
10-Sabonis (9-1) and 11-Huntinthelastdolar (5-1). They will both be on my Late Pick 4 ticket and will use them exactas. The 0.50 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 12, it has a $30,000 guaranteed pool with a low 12% takeout, and it will be my focus. Comments and sections below are based on a fast track.

Xpressbet account holders be sure to register for the 10X's Reward Points Promo on wagers for the entire Friday night card at Hoosier Park.

    Race 12 (9:43 PM EDT)

1-Fox Valley Kodiak (8-1)-Was completely overlooked last week and paid off at 65-1 leaving from post 8. This field is likely better, but the Nelson Willis entry has 3 wins in 5 races at HoP. This is the 3rd start off a sick scratch and should be there at the wire if takes its performance up a notch. Deserves respect after rallying with a 53.1 back half to roll by.
5-M-M-S Bud (3-1)-Paced the 2nd half in 53.3 last time but was wide most of the mile and was pace compromised. Looking for an aggressive steer off the gate and should be able to land on the point or in the pocket. Does have sub-150 speed and looks like a main threat with a smooth trip.

    Race 13 (10:06 PM EDT)

2-Little Rocket Man (3-1)-The veteran certainly has a homefield advantage winning 64% of HoP races. Often the hometown favorite when facing outsiders at HoP is over bet and is a go-against play. But the Ken Rucker trainee has drawn off versus Open company here in the last 2 starts and is looking for its 5th straight picture. This is a big test, a more difficult field, although some aren't at the top of their game. All that said, draws inside and could be difficult to collar if let loose on the lead. Using this time because this race feels different and has a post edge that could be the winning difference.
10-Sabonis (9-1)-Hasn't been sharp after winning the Graduate at M1 on July 5th. Finished a close 3rd in the Haughton after drawing the 11 hole and since then has given up the lead down the lane. Using both 2nd tier horses as either could win with an efficient trip. Dexter Dunn knows how to manage the 2nd tier and there is speed to the inside to follow.
11-Huntinthelastdolar(5-1)-Andrew McCarthy takes over for Jason Bartlett and the Yonkers shipper is in very good form. This pilot has steered the 5-year-old in the past and will start the race right behind Rocket Man. Should be able to find a decent early seat. Knows how to win on a larger oval, and best to respect did have a 149.2 mark at Wbsb last year.

    Race 14 (10:29 PM EDT)

3-Im Skinnydipin N (2-1)-The New Zealand bred is starting to shine Stateside winning 2 of the last 3 starts. Zipped home in 149.2 with a 26.2 last panel on 8-1. This will be a bigger test but can't be overlooked because another efficient trip could be coming.
4-Odds On Outlier (5/2)-This is the 3rd start off the bench for the Melanie Wrenn pupil and now Dexter Dunn is between the pipes. Has raced well in the last 2 races at HoP and looks acclimated to the larger oval. Could be ready to take a picture.
7-Airborne Spark (8-1)-This will be the 2nd start on Lasix and will take a swing for a price. Has good gate speed and could land near the top of the stack. Marvin Luna could work a suck-around trip and look to brush by down the lane.

    Race 15 (10:52 PM EDT)

3-Swan In Motion (3-1)-Raced well in last but was used hard off the car and faded down the lane. This time moves down a few slots from post 7. Should be able to get on the point without burning as much gas and John DeLong might be able to steal a quarter.
6-Flirtnwiththepilot (9/2)-Dunn steers another for the Wrenn barn and the 4-year-old tripped out in last to win. Will probably need another sharp steer to double up but is in a position for that to happen.

    $1 Late Pick 4

    1,5/2,10,11/3,4,7/3,6
    Total Bet=$36

      Saratoga Pick 3 | Friday, August 8

      August 8, 2025 | By Frank Carulli

      SARATOGA PICK 3
      Friday, August 8, 2025

The last four Pick 3 pools on Saratoga’s card last Friday drew more than $100,000. Will history repeat itself this Friday, Aug. 8? It’s worth playing the $1 wager to find out. We’ll focus on a Pick 3 with the Grade 2 $300,000 Ballston Spa Stakes in the middle of the action.

SAR 7th race (4:39 p.m. EST) -- Go deep in this wide-open Maiden Special Weight turf mile with a $100,000 purse. APALTA, a $525,000 sales buy, stretches out off a useful debut sprint for trainer Todd Pletcher, who won with three MSW turf routers in less than a month at the current meet. SALAMIS was bumped wide into the first turn and recovered to finish third in a ‘triple key’ seasonal debut at Keeneland four months ago. He finished between three rivals who won MSW turf routes next out, two with 81 Beyers. His dam, Antonoe, was 4-for-10 on the grass with a Grade 3 win in France and a Grade 1 victory at Belmont that pushed her bankroll over $500,000. He moves from post 10 to post 2, but will need some pace flow. PERRETTI handled a change to front-end tactics in his second U.S. start last fall, leading to the stretch from post 12 in a race that produced two follow-up winners and a runner-up who posted a 95 Beyer in defeat. PRAIRIEDALE and ROYAL PRESENCE, among several entrants returning off long layoffs, are worth using on the Pick 3 ticket at a price. PRAIRIEDALE hasn’t raced since he debuted two years ago, when he passed seven rivals with a wide stretch run to finish fourth. He is working forwardly, gets Irad Ortiz Jr. to ride and gets Lasix. ROYAL PRESENCE “climbed some into kickback” in a turf-to-dirt debut at Saratoga last fall in which the top pair eventually posted 1-2 finishes in Grade 3 company. He lacked stretch kick in a well-bet follow-up try on the Aqueduct lawn, now makes his seasonal debut for Mott, who strikes at 24-percent with first-time blinkers added. (If the race is moved to the main track, use #9 Duration as a solo play.)

SAR 8th race (5:12 p.m. EST) -- BE YOUR BEST set a fast pace and drew away on the turn in the 1-1/8-mile Gamely Stakes at Santa Anita to become the lone entrant in today’s featured $300,000 Ballston Spa (G-2) with a Grade 1 victory in North America. She is cross-entered in a Grade 2 event at Colonial Downs tomorrow and her presence – or absence – will alter the complexion of this speed-laden turf route. Use her on the ticket if she runs, but lean toward two better-priced options in the Pick 3. WHISKEY DECISION slipped through a rail opening on soft footing at Monmouth Park to win the Grade 3 Eatontown off a seven-month layoff. She continued strong on the gallop out and could improve in her second start for trainer Chad Brown. OZARA finished 2-1/4 lengths behind WHISKEY DECISION but can turn the tables in here. She was a bit fractious in the gate, settled in last in the six-horse field, made a bold 4-wide sweep to join the leaders for the stretch drive and finished third. She came back to win the $135,000 De La Rose Stakes to go 2-for-2 at Saratoga, finishing 1-1/5 seconds faster than split-division winner DEEP SATIN, who is lower odds on the morning line.

SAR 9th race (5:45 p.m. EST) -- UNCLE JIM won 3 of his first 6 starts before he was roughed up off the claim and finished last for a $100,000 tag. He gets class relief in his first short sprint try and, if needed, showed a passing gear in his debut victory. THREE B’S brushed the side stall, then leaned in on a rival at the break, but recovered to finish second as the favorite to a speedy, runaway class dropper. He steps up for his new connections today. STORM THE STREETS fell a head short of three consecutive 6F wins on a tour of Kentucky tracks recently and lures Irad Ortiz Jr. to ride. CONSIDER IT DONE showed marked improvement in winning his first two starts off the claim for trainer Linda Rice in the spring and merits a second look despite a dull allowance try last out.

      Suggested $1 Pick 3
      SAR 7th Race: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 (add #9 as MTO)
      SAR 8th Race: 1, 2, 3 (add #10 as MTO)
      SAR 9th Race: 1, 2, 4, 6
      Cost: $60

        Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

        Del Mar - Race #6
#8 Unrivaled Hero Last couple have not been anything to write home about, but he was competitive with some similar types earlier this year and could be ready to bounce back in a bad spot.
#5 Crazy Cavalier Honest runner should be in a good spot again turning for home, but that has also been the case in pretty much every start on his page, and here he is still looking for his first win. Obvious player, but not sure how excited you're supposed to get here at a short price.
#2 Hamlin He's in the mix with these based on the last one, and there isn't a ton of serious pace lined up here -- could be the one to catch at the turn in.
Race Summary Unrivaled Hero has some appeal despite a couple of dull recent runs on his page. I don't feel like there is anything to be afraid of in here, and he's not far removed from some races that would do the trick.
        Del Mar - Race #7
#5 Fionello He looked good winning in the debut try and draws well to be one of the prompting players from out here. He needs better today, but #3 Trump Era flattered him with a next-out score of his own.
#6 Hero or Zero Like the top choice, he gets a great draw to attack from the start, and he was pretty impressive in the debut score. Lots to like today.
#2 Desert Dawg He beat a cheap Los Al group at first asking, but I wonder if he might be one of the more likely to rate successfully here. Could tuck in behind some speed.
Race Summary Fionello was well meant at first asking and looked good, and the race already came back well with another one of today's competitors lined up off a next-out win.
        Del Mar - Race #8
#6 Cameron Slough She's a good fit with this kind and may be able to pick these up late while turning back off a longer trip. Nothing flashy on her page, but she's honest enough with a rallying chance today at a midrange price.
#3 Miss Meagher Think she'll find one or two of them too good here, but her form has been solid this year, and she earned the step up today for the new team with that score last time out. Wouldn't knock me out of my chair...
#5 Oveta's Hobby Really like him here, but I worry that this trip might just be stretching her a tiny bit. In the mix into the far turn, but I worry that she'll get bet and prove vulnerable in the final yards.
Race Summary Cameron Slough might be a bit overlooked off a couple modest efforts, but she fits well enough with her better stuff and may punch home better on the cutback today.

          Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

          Saratoga - Race #1
#4 WORLD WIDE WEB (4-1) Useful debut at Monmouth, lures Irad to ride, added ground a plus.
#7 NEIGH BABY (7-2) Like the :47.3 move at Saratoga for 23-percent barn with 2-year-olds.
#3 MAX MONEY (9-2) Third behind pair of sub 2-to-1 first-time starters, fastest-of-38 work since then.
Race Summary WORLD WIDE WEB bid at the quarter pole and got up for third against all first-time starters except the favored runner-up at Monmouth. Now it’s his turn to parlay that experience and an extra half-furlong to his winning advantage. Bet to win and place and play a 3-4-7 exacta box.
          Saratoga - Race #3
#9 SWEET LITTLE LILA (6-1) Tries to follow the fast footsteps of her dam in first start of career.
#2 BISCLAVRET (6-1) Trainer George Weaver is 13-41 the last 3 years with 2yo firsters on turf.
#4 DEEP LEARNING (3-1) Dam lost by a nose and a neck on Belmont and Saratoga lawns to start career.
Race Summary Well-bred debut runners abound in this 1-1/16-mile turf test. SWEET LITTLE LILA ships in for the top Maryland-based barn of trainer Brittany Russell. The 2-year-old is named after her dam, Sassy Little Lila, a speedy, multiple graded stakes-placed grass router with $465k in earnings. Bet to win and place and play 9-2 and 9-4 exactas.
          Saratoga - Race #5
#7 TRUMAN’S COMMANDER (3 Sire’s progeny produce on turf, trainer gets ‘em ready to run.
#9 THREE THIRTEEN (6-1) Dueled through fast splits, got carried wide in race dominated by closers.
#2 LAWYER MASON (6-1) Chased 5-2 winner, held well for second, last place finisher came back to win.
Race Summary TRUMAN’S COMMANDER debuts for trainer Mark Casse, who sent out 28 debut 2-year-old winners from the last 150 to start on the turf. His sire, Omaha Beach, is the 12th-leading turf sire by progeny earnings this year and he has produced the likes of graded stakes winners And One More Time and Kehoe Beach, not to mention multiple stakes victors Neom Beach and Freedom Not Free, all at an average winning distance of today’s 5-1/2F sprint. Bet to win and place and play 7-2, 7-9 and 7-10 exactas.

                Belterra Park - Race #2 - Post: 1:05pm - Claiming - 8.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $10,100 Class Rating: 78

                Rating:

                #3 MAIDEN LANE (ML=3/1)
#2 SO FAR SO GOOD (ML=7/2)

MAIDEN LANE - A win pct the likes of what Sosa and Hamm have achieved together is terrific. Sosa should have her moving strong on the turn. SO FAR SO GOOD - You'll be generating money left and right by turning your cash onto this rider/trainer combination. Smith brings her back again. I propose you stay with this hot filly. The rider has had great success with this animal in the past. Didn't ride last time but gets back in the saddle today.

                Vulnerable Contenders: #5 KRICKLE (ML=2/1), #6 SICILIAN STYLE TWO (ML=9/2), #4 SNEAKIERTHANSARAH (ML=6/1),

KRICKLE - A bit of a less than stellar outing when this filly finished sixth. I don't normally play a morning-line favorite that hasn't been to the track in the last three weeks. SICILIAN STYLE TWO - I can't play this continual non-winner. Gets the assignment completed occasionally. SNEAKIERTHANSARAH - The speed ratings are going downward. I'm not throwing a few bucks at this less than sharp equine off of that trend. Tough for anyone who saw this questionable contender in her last event to bet on her this time.

                  # 2 ANNIKA'S SONG 9/5
                  # 4 MISS UNION 7/2
                  # 5 VIVA LA VINO 2/1
ANNIKA'S SONG is the best bet in this race. Has been running well in races of this distance, going 2 / 7 under similar conditions. With Perez uptop her, this filly ought to be able to break out quickly in this race. With a strong 68 average speed fig at the distance, seems well suited for today's outing. MISS UNION - Is tough not to consider based on Equibase Speed Figures which have been formidable - 80 avg - of late. Henson has a very strong winning percentage with horses racing in dirt sprint races. VIVA LA VINO - Trainer has strong win rate (22 percent) at this distance and surface. Ought to be given a chance based on the competitive Equibase Speed Figure posted in the last contest.

                    # 7 DRUM ROLL PLEASE 1/1
                    # 6 CABERNAYDO 5/1
                    # 2 WAR IN CHARGE 6/1
I give the nod to DRUM ROLL PLEASE here. Ought to be given consideration here on the basis of the figures in the speed section alone. Has decent early pace and will almost certainly fare soundly versus this field. Is a contender - given the 92 speed rating from his most recent race. CABERNAYDO - With better than average trips to the winner's circle, Hernandez will probably have this gelding in excellent position to win the contest. Vassilieva has this gelding racing well and is a very good selection based on the very strong Equibase Speed Figures posted in route races lately. WAR IN CHARGE - Could provide positive gains based on competitive recent speed figs with an average of 79. Attard has him trained well to break sharply out of the gate.

                      Delaware Park - Race #8 - Post: 4:14pm - Maiden Special - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $45,000 Class Rating: 83

                      Rating:

                      #6 PLATFORM (ML=6/1)
                      #7 FAROOQ (ML=4/1)

PLATFORM - Mena is back up for another contest today after riding aboard this horse for the 1st ride on Jul 18th and ought to know the ropes to this one a little better. The rest of the bunch may trail this entrant all the way around the track. FAROOQ - This gelding has been working well, and the recent bullet work says he's primed for a big race today. Carrying 5 pounds less this race. Trainer has him in a good spot.

                      Vulnerable Contenders: #1 KING SIZE (ML=2/1), #5 DECORUM (ML=3/1), #4 MUNTAGE (ML=8/1),

KING SIZE - I'm foretelling a less than stellar go out of him today. DECORUM - When examining today's class rating, he will have to record a much better speed figure than last out to vie in this dirt sprint. MUNTAGE - Just don't believe he is worth it at the likely odds.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: #6 PLATFORM is the play if we get odds of 6/5 or better
