    Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

Presque Isle Downs - Race #2
#5 Magnus Effect Not a ton of upside left for this guy, but I did like his last when racing off the bench, and he's competitive with anything similar if he can hold that form. First jump run -- only he stays better today?
#4 Stroke of Luck He seems like one of the ones, but he has also had a fair number of chances already and tends to flatten out just a bit in the late stages of his races. Won't surprise anyone, but there's not a lot of enthusiasm here for me.
#2 King Reigert He can probably find a more tactical spot today, and he has obviously been competitive with this kind after crossing the wire up top with similar in the past.
Race Summary Magnus Effect looked solid enough in the comeback run before just giving way late, and if he's any tighter today with that race under his belt, he can play here.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #7
#4 Dreaming of Kona Tactical speed can get a good run of things while just tapping the brakes early, and I'm hoping the presence of the guy just outside of him will help keep the price fair.
#1 Kennel Club Spent some time considering him on top, so I think he's in play with these while turning back with a couple of shorter races on the page that came out well for him. Could charge late.
#5 You Bet a Fortune No real issue with landing here except probably a short kind of price, but he makes sense on paper yet again with dangerous speed in search of a fourth in a row. Draws perfectly to hound the other pace early.
Race Summary Dreaming of Kona might get an OK run while tucked in just behind a couple of quicker speed types, and his better tries would put him in the mix with You Bet a Fortune.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #8
#8 Classic King He's back down to the price of the claim after a mild run with better last out, and he should find a really good spot while tracking the speed through both turns. Lots to like.
#10 Marsac Speed is always a threat to stick around for a piece, and he could be tough if he sneaks away from the other pace up the backstretch.
#6 Bear Creek Honesty type tends to settle for slices, but that one-paced kind of spying run may play OK in this spot. Wouldn't be a total shock, but think he's just in for a share again.
Race Summary Classic King is probably not offering that 12/1 ML price while dropping back to a softer level, but I'm hoping he's still playable enough in a big group.

      Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

      Horseshoe Indianapolis - Race #1
#4 MORE THAN A DREAM (5-1) Need not be much to win at first asking for top connections.
#10 MISTER EZRA (10-1) Returns from long layoff, plays catch-me-if-you-can despite post 10.
#8 UNBRIDLED HERO (3-1) Rallied for share in 7 of 10 starts on the main track, needs some pace.
Race Summary MORE THAN A DREAM debuts for Klopp off a steady series of workouts over the track. He shows a :47.1 gate work and his dam, Virginia Dream (6-24, $114k), rallied to win a long sprint in her career debut. Bet to win and place and play 4-8 and 4-10 exactas and a 4-8 daily double.
      Horseshoe Indianapolis - Race #2
#8 EMBRUJO DE AMOR (8-5) Could be now-or-never on drop from Maiden Special Weight ranks.
#1 ZIP LORD (8-1) Early troubles in both starts, gets in light from the rail with blinkers on again.
#2 MI SARGENTO (7-2) Can’t seem to get out of his own way at the break, cuts back in distance.
Race Summary EMBRUJO DE AMOR pressed the pace-setting favorite but gave way after a half-mile in a MSW route race dominated by deep closers. He plunges to the bottom level and should have his own way in this field. Make a flat win wager on today’s Best Bet.
      Horseshoe Indianapolis - Race #3
#1 LORD MAJESTY (6-1) Proved versatile in first two starts for higher tags, should go well again.
#6 REWIRE (9-2) Steady check-getter in out-of-town sprints but has yet to win one.
#9 FOREVER LASTING (6-1) Close up for this far in pair of recent routes, sheds 7 pounds.
Race Summary LORD MAJESTY, a game first-out winner here for $20,000, shipped to Belterra Park and rallied 5-wide through the turn to finish third behind a repeat winner. He drops in claiming price for a barn in the midst of a 6-for-25 run with layoff types of 31-60 days. Bet to win and place and play a 1-ALL exacta.

            # 3 MORAL TURPITUDE 2/1
            # 2 MEDAGLIA FOREVER 7/5
            # 1 FIXYURHAIRUPRETTY 6/1
MORAL TURPITUDE looks to be a solid contender. With a nice class figure average of 80, has one of the strongest class advantages in this group. Solid average Equibase Speed Figures in dirt route races make this horse a contender. I like the rider on this mare - strong chance to win the contest. MEDAGLIA FOREVER - Boasts formidable Equibase Speed Figures on average overall when measured up against the rest of this group of horses in this race. She looks quite good in this slot and I expect will be on the front end or close at the halfway point. FIXYURHAIRUPRETTY - Had one of the most competitive Equibase speed figs of this field in her last affair. Reason to like this mare as she has in the saddle one of the best jocks using winning percentages over the last month.

              Louisiana Downs - Race #3 - Post: 5:01pm - SO - 8.0 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $10,000 Class Rating: 96

              Rating:

              #7 DON'TASK DON'TTELL (ML=5/1)
              #4 DECCAN PRINCE (IRE) (ML=2/1)
              #5 GENTLE SOUL (ML=7/2)
              #3 GUITAR BOY (ML=5/2)

DON'TASK DON'TTELL - Owns the highest Equibase speed fig on the turf at this distance. Have to give this gelding a shot. Ran a strong effort last time out within the last 30 days. Strong average class rating on this horse. Should have the form to run well on the turf. DECCAN PRINCE (IRE) - Notched a nice turf figure on July 21st at Louisiana Downs. A repeat in this event, and this one has a great shot to win. Here is a true horse for the course. Loves the track here at Louisiana Downs. Went a route in a $7,500 Claiming race at Louisiana Downs last race out from an outside draw. Moving to the inside at a similar distance should help this horse. GENTLE SOUL - Dominguez was aboard this gelding last time around the track and was impressed enough to take the animal right back. This gelding is in exceptional physical condition right now. Ran third in the last race and comes back soon. Another way to determine class is (EPS) earnings per start. This entrant has the top in the group. I think he'll be close at the finish. GUITAR BOY - Horses out of the barn of Wong have been strong on the turf. I'd expect a strong performance. When Navamarin and Wong team up on equines the win percent has been outstanding at 39. You have to bet this horse at a racing surface he likes. There's nothing like being comfortable out on the track when it's time to race.

Vulnerable Contenders: #1 PATH TO SUCCESS (ML=6/1),

PATH TO SUCCESS - Should be difficult for this thoroughbred to beat this bunch off of that last speed rating. Improbable to improve enough to run a figure anywhere near today's Equibase class figure, so put him on the likely underpriced equines list. Hard to put your money on the win end of any horse that finishes second and third as often as this one does.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Hal - DECCAN PRINCE (IRE) - Steady improvement in his speed ratings, 96 last race and 91 two races back. This magnificent animal is going to be tough against these horses.

                # 2 CAJUN EDDIE 5/2
                # 6 FAST TRAFFIC 2/1
                # 3 I WILL STAND 4/1
I think CAJUN EDDIE is a strong choice. Looks very good for the conditions of this contest today, showing solid numbers in dirt route races recently. Will almost certainly compete solidly in the early speed contest which bodes well with this group. Could beat this group of horses in this race given the 84 speed figure put up in his last outing. FAST TRAFFIC - Must be considered here on the basis of the numbers in the speed department alone. Could beat this group of horses in this race given the 82 Equibase speed fig posted in his last outing. I WILL STAND - Win percentage under similar conditions may be the key for this gelding. Looks strong against this field and will almost certainly be one of the early speedsters.

                  Mountaineer Park - Race #6 - Post: 9:05pm - Maiden Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $7,700 Class Rating: 47

                  Rating:

                  #10 KETO FRIENDLY (ML=6/1)
                  #4 KUKU (ML=5/2)

KETO FRIENDLY - Lone speed horses can be tough to run down. Here's a lone speed freak facing sluggish sorts today. This mare is in good form. Finished third on July 30th. KUKU - When Negron and Chapman combine forces on equines the ROI has been fabulous at +190. Last raced at Laurel carrying 6 lbs more. The lower weight carried in this event should serve her well. This equine collects a lot of cash per start. At the top in this race.

                  Vulnerable Contenders: #5 HEAVENLY LADY (ML=4/1), #6 TAKE THE HEAT (ML=9/2), #8 PRETTYRUNNER (ML=8/1),

HEAVENLY LADY - This filly is always around, but just doesn't get the job done. Tough to play her on the top end. TAKE THE HEAT - 9/2 is not priced right for any animal in a sprint of 6 furlongs that hasn't hit the board in a sprint race lately. PRETTYRUNNER - This steed ran a disappointing speed figure last time around the track. She shouldn't show signs of improvement and will likely lose today running that fig.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - KUKU - Chapman is giving Lasix to this thoroughbred. A marked improvement should be expected.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Go with #10 KETO FRIENDLY on top if we're getting at least 5/2 odds
