Since Cody Fajardo took over as Edmonton’s starting quarterback, the Elks have quietly transformed into one of the CFL’s more competitive “ugly winners.” Fajardo has completed over 70 percent of his passes in each of his six starts this season, steadily moving the offense with efficiency even when the scoreboard doesn’t light up. His recent 22-of-28 passing showing for 270 yards and a rushing touchdown in Week 12 stands out as a particularly disciplined effort in their 30–20 win over Ottawa.
Another hallmark of this Elks squad under Fajardo has been his consistent ability to rack up yardage even in tight losses. In Week 9, he went 20-of-25 for 257 yards with one touchdown and one interception, efficiently running the offense despite the narrow loss to Hamilton. Against Saskatchewan in Week 8, Fajardo completed 26-of-33 passes for 346 yards and two touchdowns -- a stat line more befitting a team in full stride than one getting hammered.
This isn’t a flashy unit, they don’t dominate by piling up big point totals — but they grind possession, limit mistakes, and stay in games. As Bo Levi Mitchell, Hamilton’s QB, put it after that close outing: “Their record doesn’t show who they are; that’s a damn good football team. Cody’s playing his ass off.”
Meanwhile, Calgary’s 7–3 record hides a couple of red flags for bettors. While they’ve excelled overall, they’ve struggled in spots where they’re favored—making the Elks at +8 look like a tempting, lower-risk value play. Add it all up, and this is my favorite bet of the week: Edmonton has been covering numbers, Fajardo is playing with confidence, and the Stampeders haven’t shown they can handle the pressure of being the heavy side.
