On the “surface,” Gulfstream Park’s late Pick 3 this Friday will cover a wide range of options. With one race on the all-weather track, one on dirt and one on turf, handicappers will have to navigate 640 possible combinations to hit the wager. Here’s a closer look with a suggested $1 ticket that costs $30:

GP 7th race (4:13 p.m. EST) -- The Beyer speed figure par for this condition is a 70, but none of the eight entrants in this $12,500/nw2 claimer have reached that plateau in the last 23 months. OCALA ROCKET transitioned well to the all-weather surface in a slow-paced route race, but he was out-kicked by the 2-1 repeat winner and couldn’t get past the favorite for the place spot. He gets a 7-pound weight break for his second start at this level but will be an underlay in the wagering, hence a five-deep punch in the opening leg of the Pick 3. PROUD AMERICAN is my top choice after he stalked the pace 4-wide, took over at the quarter pole and held off a pair of deep closers to win as the class-dropping favorite. Rail-sitter MY SERGEANT goes long for the first time off a six-month layoff, but he broke his maiden from up-close at 5-1/2F and can use his speed well. He was no threat in a faster-paced follow-up, facing the likes of Carcone (third in two recent allowances), Hollywood Mayhem (3-8 at GP), and next-out, wire-to-wire sprint winner Dios Will. WINNING FORTUNE ‘wore down foes’ in deep stretch to spring a 15-1 upset over three rivals who finished 1-2-3 in their next start. KUWAIT TOWERS had a useful comeback at 6-1/2F off a freshening with a ‘steady gain’ until the stretch behind a runaway winner. He changes riders, sheds the blinkers and has two decent 1-1/16-mile races on the all-weather track last winter to summon.

GP 8th race (4:48 p.m. EST) -- ALESS QUEEN, a lightly-raced 4-year-old, broke her maiden in MSW company at this distance on the Gulfstream dirt. She finished in the money in her last four starts against the likes of Emirates Affair (12-51, $373k) and Royal Poppy (6-25, $368k), who blazed to a repeat victory with a 90 Beyer next out. She moves from the rail to post 10 and might have to find a passing gear, but should be up to the task. HUMOR ME BROTHER was no match for ALESS QUEEN last out but could turn the tables with a lively pace to run at. She was heavily bet off a 7F MSW victory on a fast track. GIRVIN STAR came up a length short of three consecutive wire-to-wire victories but has to carry her speed farther in her first long sprint try, so I’ll leave her off the ticket.

GP 9th race (5:21 p.m. EST) -- AWESOME CAMPAIGN steadied after she bumped with the favorite into the first turn and didn’t recover. But she circled the turn 4-wide in her prior turf race at one mile and weakened while chasing the front-end winner through solid fractions. She enters the barn of trainer Victor Barboza, who won 19 times from his last 76 new acquisitions. GIDDY UP BABY tries to break through after five runner-up finishes in 13 starts, including a May 24 turf route at this distance when she took aim at the 4-to-5 winner. MARY MARGUERITE finished a distance second to the MSW-dropping favorite in her well-bet debut, now switches to the lawn for a 22-percent sprint-to-route barn.

The Meadowlands has a 15-race card with the 0.50 Late Pick 4 starting in Race 10, and it will be my focus. The sequence has a $50,000 guaranteed pool with a 15% takeout plus there is a $26,408 carryover. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 10 (10:05 PM EDT)

1-Save Me Dance (4-1)-Steps-up after a too late rally from the backfield. This is a rag-tag bunch and should fit. Will look for a better start when the wings fold in the 2nd straight steer for Braxten Boyd.
3-Haggard (5-1)-Bumps up after trying to go gate to wire but faded down the lane. Beaten chalk is like most of these, camera shy but now moves in a couple of spots and that shouldn't hurt. Should race near the top and be in range to win at the head of the stretch.
7-Brabossa Hanover (8-1)-Comes off an even effort against this kind and now gets a positive driver change in Dave Miller. Is only 1-16 at M1 but will look for an aggressive drive. It could be picture time if Miller blasts out and lands at the top of the stack.

Race 11 (10:30 PM EDT)

2-Bank Box Treasure (8-1)-Patrick Ryder has cashed checks with this veteran in the past and gets the call this time. Could be in line for a suck-around trip and the price should be right to take a swing.
3-C Kan Trot (5/2)-Left from post 7, got on the engine and faded down the lane versus better. Not a bad effort considering was coming off a sick scratch and was facing tougher. The Chris Height trainee does like to win (22-7-4-1) and will get the services of Dave Miller tonight.

Race 12 (10:55 PM EDT)

1-Straight Talk (3-1)-Got on the engine from post 6, set honest fractions and then faded to finish 2nd a length back. Doesn't win often (19-1-3-3) and needs to be racing close to the leaders off the car. The 7-year-old should get that trip this time and could have its way with this group. it sounds odd to say, with only 2 wins in the last 36 races, but there's no one in this field to fear.

Race 13 (11:20 PM EDT)

3-Darlin's Dream (7/2)-Posted an easy win at this level on 6-14, and then had an interference break at M1 and dull effort at PcD. Ships back and lands in the same TM level as its last win. Should get a close-up seat off the gate and if so, is a main threat.
5-Just My Mama (8-1)-Won at M1 then moved up and put in an even effort to cash a 3rd place check. Was off 20 days between starts and comes back in sequence this time and will expect better tonight.
8-Country Dancing (4-1)-The 3-year-old finds a way to get into the mix at the wire. Will need a sharp steer with this post draw but could be overlooked and pop at a solid price.

Del Mar - Race #3

#6 Warm Reception	Like the way she moved forward off the bench last time out, and something similar puts her in the frame again with another nice tracking trip waiting for her. Graduation day.
#7 Just a Kiss	Wouldn't be a surprise to see her bring something better while stretching out at second asking, and she wasn't that far off one of the other players in here....
#3 Goatski	She was in the picture with the top choice last out and wouldn't be a shock, but I could see her going one-paced again late here and finding at least one of them ready to outkick her.
Race Summary	Warm Reception came back running with a pretty solid effort last time out, and that should have her set for something a touch sharper today -- and that should be all she needs.

Del Mar - Race #6

#3 Mrs. Astor	Love that she can handle all different types of two-turn trips, and she should get a perfect run of things here today. She's probably not much of a price in here, but I think her baseline should do the trick.
#5 Khinjani	Would want her on some of the plays, but felt like just a little bit of a reach to have her on top in this space. She's obviously better than she showed in the Gamely last time out, and this is the first time she's going to string three races together since 2023. Could be sitting on something surprisingly competitive?
#11 Venganza	She might have a little appeal while trying a bit longer trip today -- she tends to run on late in a way that suggests she can at least plug away through another furlong or so. Price in the mix.
Race Summary	Mrs. Astor has super-reliable form and should find a great spot today. Just not much to argue with the way she shows up every time, and I'm not really wowed by any of the other more logical players on paper. Get Khinjani and/or Venganza in the picture with her?

Del Mar - Race #8

#8 Siennois	Might be just enough potential pace in here to think I want someone who can really finish, and this guy's better closing efforts make him a handful against this crew. Second start back might tip him over the top.
#7 Nesso's Lasthurrah	Stretchout pace should be in the mix throughout, but I worry that a couple other stretchout types could keep things honest enough to make it tough for him to see out the trip. Tough call for me.
#6 City Exile	Wouldn't argue too hard with anyone landing here, but I wanted to see just a bit more enthusiasm late from him in the run last time out. Better stuff would do.
Race Summary	Siennois might get an OK race flow today with the potential forward player all having sprint speed on their best days. Look for a late charge.

#2 LADY PATRICK’S (3-1)	Exits solid race, gets class relief, should be suited for short sprint try.
#6 SLENDER SLIPPER (8-1)	Winless long time but adds blinkers and fits okay on best.
#3 FIVE EYES ONMICHEL (9-5)	Finished between pair of follow-up winners at this level.
Race Summary	LADY PATRICK’S romped in her 6-1/2F debut, then stalked the pace 4-wide in a 7F follow-up that timed one second slower than $25k/nw2 boys on the same card. She gave way at the quarter pole on a muddy track but finished ahead of a next-out runner-up at the class level she drops into today. Bet to win and place and play a 2/3, 6/ALL trifecta.

Gulfstream Park - Race #3

#1 SECANE (8-5)	Barn won with 4 of its last 12 first-time starters, all at less than 2-1 odds.
#7 QUESTNBLED’CISIONS (8	Shuffled back, ranged up behind 1-2 faves into stretch, lacked kick.
#3 HAUTE DIVA (2-1)	Rallied inside in lane to finish second in field of mostly first-time starters.
Race Summary	Joseph-trained SECANE zipped 4F in :47-4/5 from the gate at Palm Meadows in her final debut prep, more than a second faster than all but one of the 54 others who worked that day. Her sire, Audible (5-10, $2.1 million), won the Grade 1 Florida Derby at Gulfstream in 2018. Bet to win and place and play 1-3 and 1-7 exactas.

Gulfstream Park - Race #5

#7 BREEZER (8-1)	Just missed repeat win two back at this level, tactical speed comes in handy.
#4 PEACE NOT WAR (15-1)	Earned competitive speed figs and hit board in prior pair on synthetic track.
#10 TAP GOLD (2-1)	Piling up the checks against better, hasn’t started outside post 7 in three years.
Race Summary	BREEZER chased the wire-to-wire winner and lacked stretch kick as the favorite. There’s speed to his outside but he proved versatile when he won at this distance three starts ago. The price is right for a win and place bet and a 4-7-10 exacta box.

My choice in here is ALWAYS ON CAY. Ran a very strong last race. Has very good Equibase speed figs and has to be considered for a bet here. Has a sharp record at the distance and surface, which makes me give my vote to this gelding. GOOD LOVIN - Tough to pass on this gelding with Alvarado in the irons. Should compete solidly in the early speed battle which bodes well with this group of animals. HEY BATMAN - Has some positive handicapping angles which make this horse a play. Has strong Equibase Class Figures relative to this group - worth a look.

FOOTNOTE - In this race here, this magnificent animal has garnered the highest speed fig at the distance, so I have to give her the edge. Leon and Sanchez perform well when they partner up. Hard to top a win percent of 50. Sanchez drops her down to this class. You don't need too much more handicapping info to believe this animal should have a chance to win at this level. This horse is tops in earnings per race. She looks solid in today's affair.

Vulnerable Contenders: #4 PRINCESS IRENE (ML=3/1), #7 JAM'S PAPER MOON (ML=7/2), #3 FUEGO K (ML=7/2),

PRINCESS IRENE - To me, when a runner adds front wraps in her last event, it's never a good sign. Ran well to finish second on July 26th, but hasn't had even a single morning drill since then. JAM'S PAPER MOON - Pedestrian speed fig last race out at Monmouth Park at 1 mile. Don't feel this entrant will improve too much in today's race. FUEGO K - This thoroughbred just hasn't looked ready of late.

VINTAGE VINO - Comparing how the horses in this field have fared under similar conditions, I see this one has the highest speed figure for the distance-surface. Running 1 mile on the grass, you've have to look at horse's turf figures. This horse has the tops in the bunch. Just check out his most recent speed rating, 96. That one fits in this group. Average class rating is tops in this field. I think that is a big edge for a turf race.

Vulnerable Contenders: #10 STURDY (ML=8/5), #1A SALVATION (ML=5/2), #7 THE NOMINEES ARE (ML=7/2),

STURDY - Last performed on Jul 13th at Saratoga, finishing third. Unlikely to get better off of that outing in today's race. SALVATION - Doubtful that the speed figure he earned on July 27th will hold up in this affair. THE NOMINEES ARE - Last viewed on March 29th at Tampa Bay Downs. Probably needs to do some racing into form.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - VINTAGE VINO - I start with the classiest thoroughbred in the field then work my way down. This one's got the top earnings per start. No need to look further.

TIZ A TEN I SEE is my choice. Has performed strongly lately in sprint races, posting a nifty 68 avg speed figure. Is tough not to look at based on Equibase Speed Figs which have been very good - 68 avg - of late. The Lasix change (now going off Lasix) may spark a return to the races for this filly. MOTHER OF PEARL - With better than average trips to the winner's circle, Wethey should have this filly in excellent position to win the race. Ought to compete admirably in the early speed contest which bodes well with this field. MO'O LIO - Solid average Equibase speed figs in dirt sprint races make this equine a contender.
