    Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

Presque Isle Downs - Race #1
#1 Lets Get It On Could see him being mildly playable as the second choice, and I liked the effort he turned in at first asking in that easy score. Could be dangerous right back with some inside pace in a small field without a ton of sharp early speed.
#2 Schnittker He is fast enough to keep the top choice in his sights if needed, but I think he ends up getting a tough chasing trip today at what may not be that exciting a price.
#3 King Mendelssohn He goes for a dangerous new team here with some back efforts that would make him pretty tough here. Not totally sold that he'll get home first, but it's tough to discount anything from this team.
Race Summary Lets Get It On may still have a little upside in just this second career start, and he may be able to control the tempo from the fence in a way that keeps him fresh enough to finish.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #2
#2 Up In Time He moved forward when cutting back at second asking, and he's got the right kind of positional pace to find a good spot today. Still think he has some upside and may handle these easily today.
#3 Michaelshatrick He's had a lot of chances, but his better stuff would keep him in the picture. That said, he's probably along too late again today even with his top game.
#7 Eastern Extension He caught a logical winner last out and makes sense while trying this softer crew, but he's another who has already run out of excuses at this point in his career. Obvious threat.
Race Summary Up In Time doesn't have a whole lot to beat in here except the one drawn widest, and he should be in a perfect, tactical spot throughout today.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #8
#3 Third City He fits well enough against this group, but more importantly, he brings a tiny bit of pace in a race that completely lacks it otherwise. Can walk these around today.
#2 Express Star That was a solid score last time out for the new team, and he's a pretty reliable finisher with baseline form that makes him a player. Tactical edge to the top choice.
#6 Grey Charmer He's a pretty honest closer, but he has occasionally shown the mildest tactical pace that would probably keep him in a decent spot today in a race that figures to have a soft tempo.
Race Summary Third City has some pace, and that may be the end of the story in this spot. Lots of semi-appealing finishing form scattered throughout the rest of the field, but I think the race flow leaves them up against it

      Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

      Horseshoe Indianapolis - Race #3
#1 PERNICIOUS (3-1) Class drops off bullet workout in second start for Klopp after long layoff.
#2 SWIFT BEE (7-2) Flopped on turf, finished 8 lengths behind next-out allowance runaway at 5-1/2F.
#4 MICTLAN (5-2) Was 1-2-3 after half mile in crowded MSW sprints thus far.
Race Summary PERNICIOUS takes a magnified class drop for her second start this year, having faced quality Maiden Special Weight company through her first year of racing. She breezed to a 3F bullet workout in :36 since her last start and cuts back to 5-1/2F, the only distance at which she finished second. Bet to win and place and play 1-2, 1-4, 2-2 and 2-4 daily doubles.
      Horseshoe Indianapolis - Race #4
#2 WATCHER (9-2) Plays to a steady beat, draws a lot of betting attention, tests the lawn for first time.
#4 HOOSIER PROMISE (6-1) Wore blinkers in allowance win and follow-up stakes, sheds 9 pounds.
#8 CRICKENBERGER (7-2) Best turf resume in the field but has yet to race on it this year.
Race Summary WATCHER, a $121k earner with an 18/4-3-5 record on the main track, carries her consistent form to the turf, a surface she tried to get on twice previously. She finished in the money in her prior three starts in 2x allowance company at three distances. Bet to win and place and play a 2-4-8 exacta box.
      Horseshoe Indianapolis - Race #5
#4 DR. SOULFIRE (2-1) First start since voided claim in May, runs for cheapest tag of career.
#7 ME AND CHILI (9-2) Solid numbers, gets in light-weighted, can top $200,000 in Horseshoe earnings.
#10 FLOWPECKER (6-1) Has speed, has six wins at this distance, moves inside out.
Race Summary DR. SOULFIRE, idle since a voided claim after a near miss in a $12,500 claiming sprint, is strictly the one to beat if ready after 3-1/2 months away. He has three troubled runner-up finishes in a row but has yet to win on the main track. Make a flat win bet and play 4-7 and 4-10 exactas.

            # 7 DR. KRAFT 3/1
            # 6 SPEIGHTSTER RED 5/1
DOUBLE YOUR MONEY is my choice. This gelding has posted some nice finishes in his last couple of tries. Well above average win rate at this distance/surface. Is a strong contender based on figures earned as of late under today's conditions. DR. KRAFT - His 89 average has this horse with among the strongest speed figures here. The Lasix change (with second time Lasix) may spark a return to the races for this horse. SPEIGHTSTER RED - Has a strong record at the distance and surface, which makes me give my vote to this gelding.

              Mountaineer Park - Race #3 - Post: 7:50pm - Maiden Special - 5.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $16,500 Class Rating: 44

              Rating:

              #6 ZENERGY UNBRIDLED (ML=6/1)
              #7 RED ROSCOE (ML=5/1)

ZENERGY UNBRIDLED - Got an unlucky trip his first time out. Hitting the track today, should do better if he stays out of any problems. Always watch out for the longer priced horse when a trainer has an 'uncoupled' entry in a race. Just missed hitting the board on July 22nd at Mountaineer Park. With decent M/L odds in this event, he has my interest. RED ROSCOE - I expect this race horse to surprise some prognosticators this time around.

              Vulnerable Contenders: #3 ALL ROADS TO DENIS (ML=5/2), #4 THE GROOM'S JUL (ML=3/1), #1 Y U UNBRIDLED (ML=4/1),

ALL ROADS TO DENIS - This thoroughbred likes to hit the board, but doesn't usually get the job done. Keep out of the top spot. THE GROOM'S JUL - Tough to put any dough on this gelding on the top end. Likes to hit the board though. This less than sharp equine has had no success at Mountaineer Park. Y U UNBRIDLED - Not probable that this animal will finish better than he did last time out of the box when placing fourth. Can't wager on this questionable contender in today's sprint of 5 1/2 furlongs. Hasn't even hit the board in a sprint clash of late.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: #6 ZENERGY UNBRIDLED to win at post-time odds of 8/5 or better

                RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                # 4 EURO K 6/1
                # 1 MARKING BROADWAY 2/1
                # 2 AREUNOTENTERTAINED 7/2
EURO K is the strongest bet in this race. Looks strong against this group of horses and will probably be one of the early speedsters. He has recorded competitive figures under today's conditions and will most likely fare well versus this field. MARKING BROADWAY - Could best this field based on the speed rating - 56 - of his last contest. The average Equibase class figure of 48 makes this entrant hard to beat. AREUNOTENTERTAINED - A solid 62 avg class rating may give this colt a distinct class edge against this group of horses in this race. I think having Stephenson ride this colt is a smart move.

                  Presque Isle Downs - Race #5 - Post: 5:18pm - Claiming - 8.3 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $13,000 Class Rating: 75

                  Rating:

                  #5 EASTERN SUNRISE (ML=8/1)
                  #2 PEACHES POINT (ML=7/5)
                  #6 HIGH TRACK (ML=5/1)

EASTERN SUNRISE - Looks like the lone speed of the race. Should be tough on the front-end. PEACHES POINT - Took a class drop last time around the track at Presque Isle Downs. Rice keeps her at the same level in today's race. I think that's a good move. This filly garnered a strong speed fig of 68 in her last event. That speed fig should be good enough to prove victorious in today's event. HIGH TRACK - Like the way this filly's finish positions keep getting better. That's a sure sign of improving form. Miller brings her back again. I advise you stay with this strong filly.

Vulnerable Contenders: #1 TANGO ZULU (ML=2/1), #4 GULF COAST GIRL (ML=6/1),

TANGO ZULU - Pace makes the race and the shortage of pace means this stretch-runner will have to rally without any help. Garnered a most unsatisfactory rating last out in a $6,250 Claiming race on Aug 5th. Doubtful to see an improved performance off of that figure. Tough to recommend since I think a 'performance bounce' is in the works in today's event. GULF COAST GIRL - 6/1 odds isn't enough for this one when scrutinizing the most recent efforts. Difficult to put any dough on this filly on the win end. Likes to hit the board though. Finished fifth in her most recent race with a substandard speed figure. When I look at today's Equibase class figure, it would take an improved performance to win after that in this bunch.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Play #5 EASTERN SUNRISE to win if you can get odds of 4/1 or more
