Del Mar opens its racing week with an 8-race program that alternates dirt and turf races throughout the day. It all builds toward Saturday's Grade 2 Pat O'Brien, which has attracted a dynamite field of Breeders' Cup Sprint and Dirt Mile hopefuls. Let's get off to a hot start.

Del Mar Race 4

#4 Avocado Lake: Take a look at her on the tote and track ahead of this one, but she has some appeal on paper with a few forward works and a pedigree that suits the trip. Enough to like to start my work here.

#2 Cara Rose: Her baseline makes her tough, and she already handled the turf just fine in the two-back run. Worried that the price won't accurately reflect how competitive this race feels to me, but she is the clear one to beat.

#1 Final Table Lady: She has a couple lengths to turn on Cara Rose from their common meeting last out, but this one presumably has a little upside while trying the new footing today. Wouldn't be a shock to see her speed pop these from the fence.

Race Notes: Avocado Lake goes first out in what feels like a pretty fun race: Cara Rose could drill these, but I don't think she has to, and the fresh face has enough appeal on paper to give her a look. Also think you could do worse than looking for inside pace from Final Table Lady.

Del Mar Race 6

#4 Darlin Tami: Think she has some price appeal after a bit of a flat try last time out. She has otherwise been a pretty reliable type and has handled these short turf trips in the past. Perfect press?

#2 Petit Filet: Her last two have been pretty honest, and she may still offer another somewhat playable price against this crew. Similar trip waiting for her.

#9 Magical Miss: She was very sharp in the debut run, and she fits right back if you take that at face value. She draws well to find another good spying spot from the outside.

Race Notes: Another fun race -- haven't even listed #3 Freya, who returns fresh off a graduation score here in November in which she beat the minor stakes-caliber Miso Phansy.

Del Mar Race 8

#5 Sunset Storm: He has some questions to answer around the new footing and how he classes up with this bunch, but I like that he has the kind of early speed that puts him right up top early, but he can tap the brakes just a touch if the guy drawn just inside wants to go.

#6 Trusty Rusty: He's slated to return on less than a week's rest for the new team, and he has pretty compelling finishing form. Bit worried he'll be along too late with these.

#3 Druidic: He just beat some of these last time out and figures in line for another decent tracking trip with these. Wouldn't argue too hard with anyone landing here, especially if he's in the range of that 7/2 ML offering.

Race Notes: Sunset Storm should be right up on the splits, and he can get a jump and try to hold late on the deeper threats if he handles the new footing. Price should be OK to find out.

Thursday's Saratoga card picks up stakes steam toward the huge Travers weekend. New York-breds clash at 1-1/8 miles on the main track in Race 3, the $200,000 Fleet Indian for 3-year-old fillies. The same task awaits 3-year-old colts in Race 9, the $200,000 Albany.

Saratoga | Race 5 | 3:27 pm ET

#3 Fonzi Angel (10-1 morning line odds) deserves a longshot chance moving from an even-running dirt sprint to a turf route. Those kind often like 2-turn racing and the grass is not a concern here as the dam (mother) is half-sister to Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf winner Wrote. Veteran trainer Jim Ryerson hasn't had a great Saratoga meet, so the class drop here might be out of necessity more so than the horse's talent. Useful play on either surface if weather is an issue. Win-place bet #3.

Saratoga | Race 8 | 5:10 pm ET

#3 Lemon Muffin (4-1 morning line odds) earned her recent, 2-month break after 3 starts in 40 days, the last of which the jockey moved too soon before she ran out of starch. Reappears with top-class Flavien Prat now taking the call and runs first time for new trainer Rudy Brisset after the passing of D. Wayne Lukas. Fresh and ready. Win bet #3. Exacta boxes 3-2 and 3-5.

Race Summary	SISTERSOUTTACHROME class drops for her first start since March, but she broke her maiden and ran third for a $35,000 claiming price off shorter layoffs at Oaklawn. She gets in light-weighted and get the call on the cutback to a long sprint. Bet to win and place.

Race Summary	CLYDE’S GREEN GO returns to the turf for the first time this year. But he arrives in top form, earning his top two speed figures and running away from the field in a pair of recent 6F victories. He should sit a perfect trip in a speed-laden field. ABSTRACT MOMENT - Procter was aboard this mare last out and was impressed enough to take the animal right back. Kingsley moves this mare to the dirt today. Look for a chance at a big improvement from the most recent turf race.

VIDEO REVIEW - There's early speed, speed, and more early speed in this event. Doesn't look too good for this animal. Difficult to play any mount in a sprint affair if he hasn't finished in the money in a sprint in the last couple months. Improbable that the speed fig he earned on June 13th will be enough in this race. SMILING TIZZY - A pattern of decreasing speed figs 83/65/59 for this racer. Registered a somewhat easily forgotten speed figure last time out in a $40,000 Maiden Claiming race on Aug 2nd. Not probable to see an improved performance off of that figure. DIRTY WORDS - This horse hasn't been in the mix in either of his last two efforts. This gelding earned a speed rating in his last race which probably isn't good enough in today's race.

Boasts formidable speed figures on average overall when measured up against the rest of this group of animals. D DAY REUNION - Must be given a shot given the class of races run lately. Is tough not to consider based on speed figures which have been solid - 77 avg - of late. STICKY NOTE - His 82 average has this gelding with among the top Equibase speed figs in this contest. Make a note that this horse runs with second time Lasix today.
