Al Cimaglia: Northfield Park Late Pick 4 Analysis

    August 24, 2025 | By Al Cimaglia

    XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Northfield Park has a big 16-race card scheduled. The $1.00 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 11. The sequence has a $10,000 guaranteed pool with a 14% takeout, and it will be my focus. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 11 (9:40 PM EDT)

5-Tell The Dream (9/2)-Steps up after a gate to wire score and draws well. Has cashed a check versus this kind and this isn't a deep a group. Justin Irvine could land on the point or in the pocket and will respect chances to beat better.
6-Beautiful Lather (9/2)-This 4-year-old mare takes an ambitious jump up in class after scoring a gate to wire win. The Stacey Currie-Marc St. Louis combo posts 28% winners together. Could be overlooked and will use against a suspect group.
7-Girlfromrosedale A (2/1)-This is the logical play, should be bet down and Aaron Merriman is at the controls. There are many reasons to circle this choice including doing good work at Nfld (7-5-0-0). But comes off a sick scratch, has been off almost a month, and draws outside. Using but can't fully trust.

    Race 12 (10:02 PM EDT)

2-Pretty Lil Penny (2-1)-Beat up on 3-year-olds in last and from the inside should be a main player versus older here. Got on the engine last time and never looked back, and the same plan could be followed again.
3-Rose Run Arch (5-1)-Has 2 wins in 13 races at Nfld but has finished 2nd a lot, as in 7 times. Has broken stride in 2 of the last 4 but now gets the services of Chris Page. Should offer a square price and could be a player if minds its manners.
9-Sir Cactus Jax (12-1)-Price shot raced gamely last time to get nosed out, and left from post 9. Irvine landed a decent early seat and was in striking range at the halfway mark. Went off at 7-1 in last, should be another nice price and could connect on a 2nd tier win this time.

    Race 13 (10:24 PM EDT)

2-Rockabillycockshut (5-1)-The Roegner trainee drops, and Travis Smith picks up another live drive. This pilot came 2nd versus similar the last time he sat behind the 6-year-old mare. Drops to a spot to shine and won 2 back going gate to wire against this type.
3-First Of Her Name (7/2)-Steps up after drawing off by 7 lengths in the 1st start for the Bill Rhoades barn. This will be a test but comes back in sequence and Merriman sticks.
6-Lazin On The Beach (6-1)-This will be the 3rd start in the Todd Smith barn. Comes off a 3d place finish versus this company and beat easier 2 back. Braiden Rhoades connects with 43% winners steering for this barn. Has gate speed, may look to blast out and could pop at a price with a smooth journey.

    Race 14 (10:46 PM EDT)

1-Shine On Susan (7/5)-Comes off a bumpy trip against the same kind leaving from the 2nd tier and finished a badly beaten 4th. Comes back in sequence this time and most important Merriman will be at the controls. With the ++ driver change and drawing the 1-hole, there shouldn't be any excuses. Has only 1 win this year and has had trouble finishing off a mile since being scratched sick on 6-21. Merriman should get the top, then be able to rate the mile and take an overdue picture with the Virgil Morgan Jr. mare.

    $1 Late Pick 4

    5,6,7/2,3,9/2,3,6/1
    Total Bet=$27

      Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

      Del Mar - Race #7
#3 Mendelssohns Angel She outran her 42/1 price in the debut try, and she exits a race I liked a little bit. Could see her moving forward enough to land this one.
#2 Naturally Blonde She finished ahead of the top choice in that same common race, but she has less upside at this point in time with several races under her belt already. Obvious player.
#5 Fly At Knight Her only turf try wasn't much, but she is probably capable of something better on the grass today while bringing what could be some dangerous pace.
Race Summary Mendelssohns Angel showed a little bit of late interest in the debut run, and something just a little bit more stout today might get the job done.
      Del Mar - Race #8
#6 Ghost of Midnight Think this is a fun race for an allowance that looks more like a stakes spot, and he's back fresh off a good run in the San Carlos earlier this year. Slight worry that he wants a touch more distance, but I think he's the one here.
#9 Hejazi Speed wasn't too far off landing a Grade I last time out and looks like the clear one to beat with this group. He's got a little bit of other pace to deal with, but none of it is the kind of speed he's used to dealing with. Wouldn't argue with you if you took the classy pace and moved on.
#2 Red Flag I've always thought a bit more highly of him than his form merits, but his baseline stuff fits well with this crew for a share. That said, he has struggled a bit of late in stakes groups, and that's essentially what he's getting here.
Race Summary Ghost of Midnight and Hejazi should be tough in here -- the former should offer a bit better price here and may be able to get the last laugh.
      Del Mar - Race #9
#9 Margot's Boy Not sure the price is going to be very appealing, but he has some pace in a race without a whole lot of it, and that should give him the jump on some of the other threats in here. Tighter this time around.
#10 Sydney Street Never really sure which guy is going to show up, but there are a couple of races on his page that might make him interesting if he can bring it today -- price should reflect the risk.
#1 Lil Nas Could see him showing a little bit of speed and just plugging away to hang around for a share from the inside. Been some time since he ran a good one, but the price will be big to see if he can sneak in.
Race Summary Margot's Boy gets a good race shape on paper here, and that should give him the edge turning for home. Think Sydney Street, and maybe even Lil Nas, might be the right ones to add some intrigue to the gimmicks.

            # 8 JESSTRONG CORONA 12/1
            # 3 PYC FURY JM 3/1
I've got to go with SUMMERHILL EXPRESS. Ought to be given a shot here on the basis of the numbers in the speed realm alone. Jones has her trained admirably to break sharply out of the starting gate. Ran a sharp last race. JESSTRONG CORONA - With one of the strongest jockeys in terms of dividends at the window, don't count this gelding out. I think having Ramirez ride this gelding is a smart selection. PYC FURY JM - Has performed admirably recently in short races, posting a nifty 63 avg speed fig. Demonstrates the look of a profitable play, averaging a solid 61 speed fig which is one of the top in this group.

              Ellis Park - Race #4 - Post: 1:16pm - Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $35,000 Class Rating: 97

              Rating:

              #1 LITTLE BLAZE (ML=2/1)
              #8 WHAT'S CRACKIN (ML=5/1)

LITTLE BLAZE - This horse has shown the class to win on different ovals. Making the move from Churchill Downs for today's event, I have to believe she's ready to run. This horse earns a lot of dough per race around the track. I believe she will add to that bankroll right here. WHAT'S CRACKIN - Like the way this filly's finish positions keep getting better. That's a sure sign of improving form. The 80 most recent race speed rating looks strong in the TrackMaster PPs. This filly is in top form right now. Ran second in the last race and comes back soon.

              Vulnerable Contenders: #4 BEAU SOLEIL (ML=7/2), #2 PROTOMAGIC (ML=6/1), #5 GOSHEN (ML=8/1),

BEAU SOLEIL - Not easy to bet on any entrant in a short distance event if she hasn't finished in the money in a sprint in the last sixty days. PROTOMAGIC - Improbable for this one to make an impact with no recent good showings in a short distance contest. GOSHEN - Should be difficult for this racer to beat this group off of that last speed figure. Doubtful to improve enough to run a figure anywhere near today's Equibase class figure, so put her on the likely underlays list.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Go with #1 LITTLE BLAZE on top if we're getting at least 5/2 odds

Race 1 - Maiden Special Weight - 5.5f on the Turf. Purse: $100000 Class Rating: 72

ELP - R5 - FOR MAIDENS, FILLIES TWO YEARS OLD. WEIGHT, 119 LBS.
                RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                # 8 GIVEMETHEBEAT 15/1
                # 2 COLD CASE 8/1
                # 12 SONIC ROCKETTE 15/1
GIVEMETHEBEAT looks to be a very good contender particularly if the morning line of 15/1 holds. Has to be carefully examined given the sire numbers TrackMaster shows on this juvenile. Sire's fillies and colts have given formidable gains. In fine fettle, and coming back almost immediately again today. COLD CASE - Should be given consideration given the sire figures TrackMaster shows on this juvenile. She has been running solidly and the Equibase Speed Figures are among the most respectable in this group of horses.

                  Rating:

                  #7 SENOR MONEY (ML=5/2)

SENOR MONEY - Ranks at the top in earnings per race. A solid effort right here in this race can increase the lifetime total.

                  Vulnerable Contenders: #6 FIRST RESPONDER (ML=2/1), #4 FOURTY FOUR (ML=4/1), #1 DANCER MUSIC (ML=6/1),

FIRST RESPONDER - The Brain always cautions me to stay away from horses in short distance races that haven't hit the board in short distance affairs of late. Earned a mediocre speed rating last time out in a Maiden Special race on Jun 29th. Doubtful to see an improved performance off of that fig. FOURTY FOUR - Tough for anyone who saw this entrant in his last clash to wager on him in today's event. DANCER MUSIC - I just don't have a good vibe about this horse in this contest.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #7 SENOR MONEY to win if we can get at least 1/1 odds

(3) Off Script moved from dirt to turf in his second start of the year and rallied from last to second by a half-length. (4) Katie King changes barns to Greg Sacco and switches from dirt to turf after a good debut. Blinkers go on. (1) Sassetti had three turf starts since May and ran well enough to contend in this field.

(3) Leo’s Reward ran the best race of his career last month when he moved from a stalking position to get the lead and then missed the win by a nose. (2) Chief Liam was a maiden winner at Oaklawn Park in January and that race was between two excusable efforts on a muddy and sealed track and the other in an allowance where something went wrong in February. (7) Crescendo’s Rein was a front-end debut winner at Saratoga on a sloppy and sealed track.
6th race [Alw 110000 N1X, 6 ? F] – (1) Fort Nelson made his second start in July following a seven month layoff and used a stalking trip to win at 2-1. (5) Voila Magic returns from a February layoff. He was a winner at first asking beating a large field at Keeneland by almost six lengths and then ran against Louisiana-breds and got a few top three finishes in stakes. (4) Filoso won a maiden at the Spa last summer and then was third in the Breeders’ Futurity. He comes back following a layoff after the Tampa Derby (G3) with blinkers off and first-time Lasix. (6) Gardiner had two wins and a second this year with two at Churchill and one in a New York starter allowance.
9th race [Alw 110000 N1X, 6F] – (8) Senza Parole (A) was an impressive debut winner for Chad Brown. He broke alertly, got taken back, moved outside and drew off to win by almost eight-lengths over an odds-on favorite. (1) Paula’s a Star broke her maiden at Aqueduct in February and then was third in the Jimmy Winkfield. Last seen she was second in a July allowance at the Spa. (9) Roswell was a debut winner at Gulfstream in January 2024 who went on to run second four times in allowances. (7) Sarir has six top three finishes at this allowance level.
Best bets: Man in Finance (3rd); Fort Nelson (6th). Best value: Amazing Gracer (1st); Senza Parole (9th).

The choice for this race is ESCAPER. May be the best in the group of horses here, showing very nice markings of late. Avg speed is a solid 83. With a 82 average class number, this contender has one of the most compelling class advantages in the bunch. Achieved a 85 TrackMaster SR last time out. A duplicate affair here should get the win in this contest. BABY FLASH - The consortium can't help but lean toward this entrant because the internal pace percentages fit well here at Running Aces. You have to strongly consider a horse that likes to win, very impressive win stat. BRINGOVERTHEMONEY - Seems to have a really strong class advantage based on the company he has faced. Performing well, recorded a substantial TrackMaster SR in his most recent race (85).

We've got good vibrations JULES HILL is going to get the trip to the winner's circle. Has a strong shot here, if she can perform to her back class. Take a long look at making this horse your win bet based on high win figure alone. BEAUTIFUL LATHER - Really liked this mare's last race. Ran a solid 86 speed rating. Major contender. When the trainer Currie puts St Louis up for the drive good things happen. Take a look at the 28 win percent. GIRLFROMROSEDALE A - This standardbred looks very good. Look at the 89 avg TrackMaster speed fig. It's a bit risky to consider based only on class, but this mare has among the best class figures of the grouping.
