Meet the Contenders: Saturday’s $3.5M Nashville Derby at KD

The second edition of the Grade 3 Nashville Derby, known as the Dueling Grounds Derby from 2014-2023, highlights the second day of the Kentucky Downs all-turf season on Saturday. The $3.5 million purse includes $1.5 million from the Kentucky Thoroughbred Development Fund in which only Kentucky-breds are eligible to compete. The rest fight for $2 million over 1-5/16 miles.

Let’s meet the contenders for the Nashville Derby (Race 10):

#1-HILL ROAD: Jim Dandy third-place finisher bypassed last week’s Travers rematch with Sovereignty in favor of this return to turf. Debuted a winner on grass in Ireland last August, but has run exclusively on dirt in 5 US starts, including a Grade 3 Peter Pan score for trainer Chad Brown. Tyler Gaffalione, who rode him to a third-place Tampa Bay Derby effort in March, reunites in the saddle.

#2-TEST SCORE: Productive ’25 campaign already has seen victories in Keeneland’s Grade 3 Transylvania and Saratoga’s Grade 1 Belmont Derby, along with a pair of additional Grade 1 placings. Graham Motion-trained son of 2010 Preakness winner Lookin At Lucky has regular rider Manny Franco aboard and should be among the favorites.

#3-KING OF ASHES: Trainer Brendan Walsh adds blinkers to Churchill Downs’ Audubon Stakes runner-up. Son of Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense exits a disappointing ninth in allowance company at Saratoga behind Nashville Derby return rival Simulate. Ben Curtis has the mount on this 1-for-7 lifetime colt.

#4-TOMASELLO: Earned his first stakes win last out in the Ellis Park prep for the Nashville Derby under Fernando de la Cruz, who returns Saturday. Mark Casse trains the colt by 2020 Kentucky Derby victor Authentic. Despite losing his first 4 outings, Tomasello has won 3 of his last 4, all in turf routes.

#5-BURNHAM SQUARE: First of 3 Kentucky Derby alumni in the field, he was sixth on the first Saturday in May. Trainer Ian Wilkes tries turf for the first time with this Liam’s Map gelding, whose dam Linda was quite adept on grass. Grade 1 Blue Grass winner will be ridden as usual by Brian Hernandez Jr., the all-time winningest jockey at Kentucky Downs.

#6-SIMULATE: Grade 2 Secretariat Stakes runner-up as the 2-1 favorite, he’ll try to continue the dream “Derby” run for Bill Mott and Junior Alvarado of Sovereignty fame. Colt by Kitten’s Joy has a maiden and allowance win at Saratoga on his ledger and has yet to be tested beyond 1-1/16 miles.

#7-TIZTASTIC: Kentucky Derby 10th-place finisher has struggled to regain his turf form in the American Derby and Saratoga Derby in recent starts. But the Steve Asmussen charge did win the Juvenile Mile and an allowance over this turf course at age 2. Joel Rosario guided him to the Louisiana Derby victory in March and has been aboard ever since. Co-owner Ron Winchell heads the ownership team of Kentucky Downs.

#8-SANDMAN: Seventh in the Kentucky Derby and third in the Preakness, the Arkansas Derby winner will try turf for the first time on Saturday. Trainer Mark Casse bypassed a third attempt vs. Sovereignty in the Travers for this spot and gets Jose Ortiz back in the saddle. Posted a grass workout at Saratoga to ready for this surface change.

#9-NOBLE CONFESSOR: Snapped a 6-race losing stream to open his career with a wire-to-wire turf maiden score July 24 at Saratoga. The Todd Pletcher trainee bid against stakes company three times while a maiden, beaten just over 2 lengths in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf. The Pletcher barn won this race in 2018 and 2019 when it was called the Dueling Grounds Derby. Irad Ortiz Jr. rides.

#10-MAXIMUM PROMISE: Third-place finisher to Nashville Derby return rival Final Gambit in the Jeff Ruby at Turfway in March, this colt seeks to stop a 4-race losing skid. Dominant maiden breaker on dirt last summer at Ellis Park, he’s been off the board in both career bids on turf – including 10th in the American Turf on May 3 at Churchill, his most recent start. Luis Saez rides the son of Maximum Security.

#11-FINAL GAMBIT: Kentucky Derby fourth-place finisher hasn’t been able to recreate his electric late kick he showed on Tapeta at Turfway in his maiden and Jeff Ruby victories. Similar efforts and results when rallying too late to impact the Belmont Derby and Saratoga Derby in recent turf tries. Brad Cox trains and jockey Florent Geroux picks up the mount for the first time as Flavien Prat opts to stay at Saratoga to ride.

#12-WIMBLEDON HAWKEYE: European raider Bellum Justum won this race a year ago under Frankie Dettori and this colt and rider will look to continue that momentum. Group 2 winner and Group 1-placed in his native England, this is a grandson of Kitten’s Joy (by Two Thousand Guineas winner Kameko). Trainer James Owen makes his US debut from his Newmarket, England base. Seasoned 12-furlong runner will be adept at the distance.

(AE) #13-IRON HAND: Gulfstream synthetic allowance winner for Jose D’Angelo finished third August 2 in the listed Bears Den Stakes in his only turf try – which snapped a 4-race win streak.

(AE) #14-NATIVE RUNNER: American Derby runner-up would be a potential second Kenny McPeek entrant if he joins the lineup alongside Maximum Promise. American Derby runner-up at Churchill disappointed last out as the 5-2 favorite in Ellis Park’s prep for the Nashville Derby.

Del Mar - Race 5

#3 Almendares: He has just found the graded level the tiniest touch too tough most of the time, but I'm willing to give him a look here with what appears to at least be a fair race shape waiting for him. Loved his last -- think he gets over the top here.

#4 Formidable Man: Not much to argue with here -- he has been unstoppable over the local footing and just easily handled one of today's competitors last out. The one to beat.

#7 King of Gosford: His baseline stuff fits well here, but unlike Formidable Man, his very best game might be at Santa Anita. Still, he's one of the ones again today.

Race Summary: Almendares has toyed with being this kind of horse over the last year or two, and I thought his last was really sharp. Hoping he can hold that form to land a race he nearly scored in last year.

Del Mar - Race 9

#8 Sumter: He was last of five behind several of these last time out, but that was his first race off the layoff and could have him set for something better today. He has been right there with some solid sprint stakes groups, so I'm hoping that holds true today at a nice number.

#10 Motorious: He's making his second start of the year after a successful return, and he has typically been a handful over the local course. Classy guy can get past these late.

#9 First Peace: He'll have to fire fresh against a good group, but he looked sharp winning the Eddie D. at Santa Anita last fall, and there are a couple races on his page that would probably keep him in the frame on the line.

Race Summary: Sumter has some price appeal here after a mild comeback run, but I like that he's spotted aggressively in this stakes spot off that effort -- hoping we'll see a more representative try today.

Del Mar - Race 11

#7 Truly Quality: He has not been seen since the super flat run at Santa Anita in February, but that offers hope that we can draw a line through that one and expect something a bit closer to what he had been showing before that. Seems capable here, and he handled the course well in that Grade II score last November.

#11 Gold Phoenix: He wasn't a serious threat at 9/5 in allowance company last out, but he is better at these longer trips and has some reasonable upside while getting more ground today. Defending champ can repeat.

#5 Atitlan: There are a few flat tries on his page, but his better stuff seems like a good fit here, and I liked his last a little bit when rallying from far back in that Grade I. Wouldn't be a shock.

Race Summary: Truly Quality has plenty of room to bounce back today after a dull run in February, and I like that he's already handled a distance trip locally.

Al Cimaglia: Woodbine Mohawk Park Late Pick 4 Analysis

Woodbine Mohawk Park has a star-studded 12-race card. The main events are the $630,000 Maple Leaf Trot and the $690,000 Canadian Pacing Derby. The 0.20 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 9, and it will be my focus. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 9 (9:49 PM EDT)

5-Allstar Maniac (6/5)-Went off at 1/9 and wasn't driven aggressively in a race against older. When James MacDonald started to roll with the 3-year-old it hooked wheels and lost all chance. Willing to overlook and remember that it set the track record at GrVr winning in 1.49 flat 2 back. Comes back to face Gold competition and this looks like a spot to get back on the winning side of the ledger.

Race 10 (10:12 PM EDT)

4-Bythemissal (7/5)-The Ron Burke trainee drew off in his Elim winning by 4 lengths in 146.4 which was a new lifetime mark. The 6-year-old has banked over $2,750,000 and one can only wonder how much larger his bank account would be if it was closer to 100% more often. For those who love baseball this is the Mickey Mantle or Sandy Koufax of harness racing. If he feels like he did last week, everyone else will probably be racing for 2nd place.
6-Erwin Hanover (5/2)-If Missal doesn't bring its fastball Louis Roy should have this very sharp Dave Menary trainee in striking range at the top of the lane. Looks to be a cut above the rest, has won 8 of 16 at Wbsb and is seeking its 4th straight win.

Race 11 (10:35 PM EDT)

6-D A Love Boat (5-1)-Didn't get the best of trips, was used hard versus better and that took its toll. Fits better with this crew and is a threat with the right trip. Will look for Jody Jamieson to be aggressive off the gate and get a close-up seat. Could finishing best of all at a solid price.
7-Captain Hurley (5/2)-Comes out of an odd race versus better and was bottled up down the lane. Travis Cullen looked like he was on a motorcycle weaving around cars. Not saying it cost a win but had more than one nice brush down the lane. Replay watchers will be on this one and hopefully won't be over bet. Did take 2 straight pictures against this kind at Wsbs earlier in the summer.

Race 12 (10:58 PM EDT)

5-Larceny (9/2)-Raced well in last and needed to come 1st over around the last turn. Just fell short of holding off the eventually winner who followed its cover and was bet down. Nothing to be ashamed of with that effort and might be ready to beat better. My guess is the price will be more attractive than the morning line odds.
6-Whichwaytothebeach (2-1)-RidC shipper is coming off a big effort leaving from post 8 and now drops to a comfortable spot for a picture. The veteran has banked over $490,000 at Wbsb and hasn't been in this soft on this oval in a long time.
8-Legion Seelster (7/2)-The 9-year-old has taken only 1 picture in 27 races this year. Raced well in the Cup and Saucer Elim and Final considering was stuck with the 7-hole in both races. Fits with this kind and has been trying hard. Not crazy about a short price but may have met a beatable field.

Saturday’s Day 2 of 7 at Kentucky Downs boasts 5 stakes, each of the featured events offering a purse of $1 million-plus and attracting 60 total entries among them. The 12-race card kicks off at 12:25 pm ET with a quartet of Kentucky Derby alumni contesting the $3.5 million Nashville Derby in Race 10. While I’ve got a stakes bomb to drop, a trio of undercard races below the featured cusp are highly attractive to this eye after posting 2 wins and a rallying second in this space on opening day Thursday.

Kentucky Downs | Race 3 | 1:29 pm ET

#11 Sudden Switch (8-1 morning line odds) tries turf for the first time, but note her second dam was an outstanding graded stakes winner on grass. Plenty of natural speed on dirt and should appreciate the shorter trip by sprint influence Munnings. Colonial Downs preppers have a rare flat-bet profit at Kentucky Downs the past 5 years and connected nicely for us in this space opening day Thursday. Win-place bet #11.

Kentucky Downs | Race 5 | 2:33 pm ET

#13 Epic Style (5-1 morning line odds) is the only starter on the card for razor-sharp Kentucky Downs trainer Mike Stidham, a winner opening day Thursday and who is 1 of only 2 trainers the last 5 years to have 20%-plus wins and a positive ROI at this track. This one rallied nicely to be second at Colonial behind a filly who returned to win an allowance in Virginia. We’ll need some luck drawing in from the also-eligible list. Win bet #13.

Kentucky Downs | Race 11 | 6:25 pm ET

#4 Neom Beach (30-1 morning line odds) has a chance to blow up the tote in the Grade 3 Kentucky Downs Ladies Turf Stakes. This race is loaded with pace and her BRIS late pace figures are excellent in her 3 straight wins at Lone Star even behind some legit paces. Don’t discount the last locale as Steve Amussen is 9: 2-2-1 at Kentucky Downs with those last raced at LS. Win-place bet #4. Exacta key-box 4 with Europeans 3,6 who likely also can finish with flair. Daily doubles 4,3,6 to 5 in next race.

Kentucky Downs | Race 12 | 6:57 pm ET

#5 Cynical Humor (6-1 morning line odds) debuts for a Wesley Ward barn widely known for 2-year-olds and turf sprinters, but a rare presence in recent years at Kentucky Downs with these juvenile debut runners. He showed up opening day Thursday with one, who popped on top and wired the field, and we’ve seen Ward go on a tear when he’s aimed at a meet. Small sample size, obviously, but he may be loaded to launch several newbies. Well-bred colt with long Keeneland work tab for this. Ward wins 35% with an 11% flat-bet profit teaming with Walter Rodriguez on first-time starters lifetime with 54 starters. Win bet #5.

#7 BOURBON TIME (8-1)	Slow starts in both long-distance tests on lawn, third in latest on main track.
#1 CADDIE MASTER (6-5)	Set pace for $40k, tracked pace to get beat 2 lengths for $16k, third start in 2025.
Race Summary	CYNTHIA GAIL showed little in her only start on turf two back, but she faced three rivals who won by a combined 31-1/2 lengths in her long-distance tests on the main track and held twice for minor awards. She class drops, takes on the boys today and is worth a win a place bet at a projected better price than her 9-2 morning line. Also play 8-1, 8-2, 7-1 and 7-2 daily doubles.

Colonial Downs - Race #3

#1 COOPERATION (9-5)	Troubled try as fave, stretches out for barn on 9-27 run with second-timers.
#2 FLIGHTOWN (5-1)	In winning range for 6F at 1M, winner romped in follow-up stakes route at Spa.
#3 AMERICAN TAPIT (4-1)	Distant second in heavily-bet debut, changes surfaces and jockey.
Race Summary	COOPERATION ‘moved up’ on the backstretch after exchanging bumps at the start, stalked the lead duo in the 4-path and lacked kick as the favorite in her 5-1/2F debut. The race was dominated by deep-closing longshots and the runner-up, In Her Glory, came back to win a MSW sprint at Saratoga. Bet to win and place and play 1-2, 1-3 and 2-1 exactas.

Colonial Downs - Race #9

#7 RHAENYS (6-1)	Holds tactical advantage in second start off layoff and on the class rise.
#8 I’M A SURE THING (7-2	Hit board in 5 of 10 turf routes, wears blinkers for the first time.
#6 MIYAKO (4-1)	Upper 60 Beyers in last three sprints, should lead for as far as she goes.
Race Summary	RHAENYS led until late off a 10-month layoff, but she broke her maiden from just off the pace on Woodbine’s all-weather track in a scenario that could play out again in this spot with MIYAKO as her target. Bet to win and place and play 7-6 and 7-8 exactas.

I think DESERT GLOW is a very good choice. Difficult to pass on this mare with Gallardo in the irons. Has to be considered in this race if only for the formidable speed fig garnered in the last contest. Should keep the impressive string of finish positions intact today. FALL MOON - Is difficult not to look at based on speed figures which have been competitive - 81 avg - of late. SCENT OF SUCCESS - Has a strong shot for this event if you like back class. Has to be given a chance against this group of animals displaying decent numbers recently and an average speed rating of 85 under similar conditions.

Vulnerable Contenders: #2 SHIP HER WEST (ML=3/1), #6 DEVIOUS DIVA (ML=4/1), #4 CRYPTIC MISS (ML=9/2),

SHIP HER WEST - This filly hasn't had any recent good results in short distance races. Not easy to wager on her in this event. Will be tough for this horse to beat this field off of that last speed rating. Not probable to improve enough to run a figure close enough to today's class rating, so put her on the vulnerable contenders list. DEVIOUS DIVA - Difficult to support any questionable contender in a sprint event if she hasn't finished in the money in a sprint in the last couple of months. This horse likes to hit the board, but doesn't usually finish first. Leave out of the top spot. Don't think this horse will do much running in today's race. That last speed rating was substandard when compared with today's Equibase class figure. CRYPTIC MISS - This steed ran a mediocre rating in the last race. FOOTNOTE - This one has recorded the best recent turf speed fig at the dist/surf. This jockey and conditioner are reliable together. Win percentage when teamed up is extremely hard to one up. Rider jumped on this filly's back for the first ride on Aug 15th. Should be in touch with the equine even better this time around. SUNDAY TIFF - Delgado brings her right back. I advocate you stay with this strong filly. Look at this pattern of improvement. 61/75/81 are the last three Equibase speed figures. WHIRLWIND - Dropping in class rating points from her August 23rd race at Delaware Park. Based on that data, I will give this thoroughbred the edge. QUEEN CATALINA - Filly's last work was second fastest of the day for the distance. Just view her latest fig, 82. That one looks good in this field. Look at this pattern of improvement. 64/71/82 are the last 3 Equibase speed figures. I like this one. Finished in front of today's probable favorite last out at Monmouth Park, and I think she will do well versus this field today. C C GIRL - Trainer Hills moves this animal to a lower class rank to face a weaker class today. Look for a strong performance racing against these lower level horses.

This filly finished out of the top three on August 1st and wasn't close in the last race either. Tough to put your dough on the win end of any thoroughbred that finishes second and third as frequently as this one does.
