Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Late Pick 4 Analysis

    September 1, 2025 | By Al Cimaglia

    XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Yonkers Raceway has a 10-race card. The $1.00 Pick 5 with a $10,000 guaranteed pool rolls in Race 5. The $2.00 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 7, and it will be my focus. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 7 (8:45 PM EDT)

1-Birthday (6-1)-Will swing for a square price with the Burke trainee who ships back into town and lands the rail. The race is full of horses who don’t usually win at this level. Having this post draw gives Tyler Buter a shot at working a winning trip.
3-Verdun (8-1)-Steps-up after putting in a no-move mile from post 7. Knows how to beat this kind and has finished 1st-2nd and 3rd in the last 3 races against this company. Should be in the mix with this post draw.

    Race 8 (9:05 PM EDT)

4-Jamaican Rock A (8/5)-This is an interesting race and the Aussie bred has been super sharp and was really good when winning its 5th straight last week. Now he has to deal with two classy foes in Desperate Man and Mossdale Ben. Jason Bartlett will look to use the post edge and take control early on.
6-Mossdale Ben N (4-1)-Borgata winner makes the 2nd start off the bench and should be hungry to take a picture. The pace should be hot, and the 7-year-old can grind out. Jordan Stratton knows how to tackle the leader down the lane.

    Race 9 (9:25 PM EDT)

2-Dunkin (7/2)-The DiDomenico entry makes its 3rd straight start at Yonkers and drops to a level to shine. Its last win came on July 7th going gate to wire. George Brennan could look to work that same plan, and should be no worse than in the pocket around the opening turn.
5-Sweet Beach Life (4-1)-Broke at the start on 8-18 and lost all chance going off at 3/5. Offers a better price and if 100% can probably leave faster than anyone. Fits, and will rely on Matt Kakaley to have the 4-year-old lit up when the wings fold.

    Race 10 (9:45 PM EDT)

4-Komodo Beach (8-1)-Makes the 3rd start off the bench and the 2nd straight at Yonkers. The veteran has issues making only the 7th start of the year but fits at this level. Might be overlooked and could be dialed on high with some needed races under its belt. Using at a price and has won 7 of 28 on the Hilltop.
5-Levine (7/2)-This horse at 7/2 in the morning line speaks volumes about this affair. The veteran is 1-39 since 1-1-2024. That said drops, this is a beatable field, and this barn is hot winning 8 of 16 over the last 30 days.
6-Sweethomealabama N (5/2)-Ships back from PcD and drops after an even effort in a needed race. With this post draw, against this kind, there should be no excuses for not being there at the wire. But the 5-year-old doesn't like to pass foes down the lane. The plan for success could be getting on the engine and making every call a winning one.

    $2 Late Pick 4

    1,3/4,6/2,5/,4,5,6
    Total Bet=$48

      Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

      Del Mar - Race #8
#3 Ooty She stretches out for this second run off the break, and I'm hoping the added ground and having the tightener under her belt will help her turn the tables on what looks like a formidable favorite on the fence.
#1 Splendora She has knocked heads with some pretty serious fillies over the last year, and her better stuff should handle these at what I'm guessing will be a short price. Only the top choice has any appeal to me beyond this one.
#8 Sugar Fish Suppose her better stuff keeps her in the mix, but the top pair are both going to get a decent jump on her turning for home. Not impossible, but not for me today.
Race Summary Ooty ran OK behind Splendora last time out, but that was her first start in nearly a year and may set her up for something better while going second off the break today.
      Del Mar - Race #10
#2 Mohaven Not sure the price is going to be much, but she was impressive scoring last time out, and the sharp finisher who closed for second behind her that day was back to win in a flashy score here the other day. Tough.
#8 Liberation She's probably capable of something just a touch better than that last one, and the price might be more appealing this time around after that run at 50 cents on the dollar. Talent is there.
#7 Cara Rose Her dirt form has been fine, so the graduation run on the turf last out isn't a huge deal for me, and I think she can outrun her price while rising here today.
Race Summary Mohaven didn't have much trouble dispatching that group last time out, and the one she beat that day was back for a fun score on the Saturday card. Guessing that race will keep getting flattered today.
      Del Mar - Race #11
#8 Phoenix Flying Not sure the price is going to be all that appealing, but he comes into this for the new team off a competitive run with similar last time out. Forward player can rate a bit if needed -- should be tough.
#5 Empire's Classic Think he's one of the obvious alternatives -- he has already had a lot of chances, but he's got pretty reliable finishing form, and that will eventually get him over the top on the right day.
#7 Brother Brother Only a mild move last out in an otherwise even effort, but that could have him ready for something a bit better today while going two turns for the second time. A better-sustained move puts him in for a share.
Race Summary Phoenix Flying should be a handful here, but I'd want to be have Empire's Classic on a couple backup plays with that honest finishing form to his name.

        Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

        Colonial Downs - Race #1
#1 BOOST (3-1) Key indicators boost her chances for a winning debut run.
#2 WICKEDWITHBOURBON (1-1) Steady low-40 Beyer type in MSW ranks, two seconds in four starts.
#3 GLANCING MY WAY (5-1) Showed speed and tired for high-percentage second-out barn.
Race Summary BOOST has a strong foundation of workouts and strong bloodlines to win at first asking. Her sire, Mendelssohn, ranks No. 10 this year in 2-year-old progeny earnings, and her dam, Fly Past, sprung an upset in her debut and won 4 of 6 starts overall. Bet to win and place and play 1-2 and 1-3 exactas.
        Colonial Downs - Race #2
#5 QUIZLER (7-2) Proven miler with Lasix, projects ideal trip, good value play.
#2 MR FLOWERS (2-1) Ultra-consistent grass route form, but short odds follow him.
#7 CAN GROUP (9-5) Late runner is winless since 2023 Grade 2 win, enters Ness barn.
Race Summary In his last three turf starts with Lasix, QUIZLER rallied for two wins at this distance at Gulfstream Park and raced close up last out before stakes-winning grass router Spirit Prince (12/2-3-4, $249k) and race favorite Main Beach passed by. He should work out a good stalking trip in this spot and is worth a win and place bet.
        Colonial Downs - Race #5
#4 CAPTAIN EDDIE (8-1) Speed puts him on upset alert in repeat attempt, use in all gimmicks.
#3 MILA’S WISH (12-1) Stakes-placed as 2yo, faltered in return, changes surfaces on the class plunge.
#1 JUST TOO FLY (9-5) Off board since 5-1/2F maiden win at Saratoga, wears blinkers for first time.
Race Summary CAPTAIN EDDIE can parlay his speed into an upset bid in this $30,000 claiming sprint on the turf. He led until late against Turbulent Force (2-6, $88k) in his debut on the lawn and chased the winning favorite off a 5-month layoff two back. He broke his maiden from off the pace on Gulfstream Park’s all-weather surface last out, but he can be back on the engine on his return to turf. Bet to win and place and play a 4-ALL exacta.

              RECOMMENDED CHOICES
              # 3 BOBBY'S GIRL 5/1
              # 10 EXPLODING CIRCLE 5/2
              # 7 ROSE HILL ROCKET 6/1
BOBBY'S GIRL is my choice. Should come out very solid - I have liked the way this filly has moved sharply to the lead recently. With a decent 55 Equibase speed fig last time out, will definitely be a factor in this competition. With a nice class figure average of 65, has one of the best class advantages in this group. EXPLODING CIRCLE - Ought to go to the lead and could never look back. Recently Hernandez has been hot which may give the edge to this filly. ROSE HILL ROCKET - Always good to invest in a handler with this kind of very good win percentage - 15 percent - at this distance & surface.

                Colonial Downs - Race #7 - Post: 3:30pm - Allowance - 8.0 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $72,000 Class Rating: 99

                Rating:

                #9 THEMANUPFRONT (ML=8/1)
                #5 NAPTOWN (ML=3/1)
                #7 QUOKKA (ML=5/1)

THEMANUPFRONT - Personally, I wouldn't worry about where he finished in his last race (fifth). Should improve in this event, with some pretty good odds. The horse with the top average class rating in turf events is usually a solid play. This pony fits the bill. NAPTOWN - I like to wager on this handicapping theory, a racer coming back off a solid effort within the last thirty days. QUOKKA - When this jockey and conditioner combine forces you have to take a look. Chuan and Blair have been terrific together. This entrant obviously likes the conditions for today's race. Has garnered the highest speed rating on the turf at the distance & surface. This gelding is in nice physical condition. Ran third on Aug 15th.

                Vulnerable Contenders: #8 LAZLO (ML=9/2), #1 GAS ALLEY (ML=6/1), #4 PRIMED TO GO (ML=6/1),

LAZLO - Doesn't look to be worth 9/2 in today's event. Pass on him this time. GAS ALLEY - The move down the stretch drive on Jul 31st indicated to me that this animal will have a tough go of it versus this field of tougher competition. Don't feel this runner will make an impact in today's race. That last speed figure was mediocre when compared with today's class rating. PRIMED TO GO - Garnered a quite unimpressive speed fig last out in a Starter Allowance race on Jul 17th. Not probable to see an improved performance off of that rating.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #9 THEMANUPFRONT to win if you can get at least 5/2 odds

                  # 4 POMPOUS PRINCE 10/1
                  # 1 HAY HAY HARRY 4/1
                  # 6 BUSTIN AWAY 5/1
I've got to go with POMPOUS PRINCE especially at 10/1. Has a strong record at the distance and surface, which makes me lean toward this gelding. It's a good signal that Ferraro is using Cruz on this one. HAY HAY HARRY - Have to bet on this money-making jockey and conditioner twosome. Has been constatntly running well recently. BUSTIN AWAY - Has put up solid speed figs in dirt sprint races in the past. Players should take a good look at this one as this gelding has one of the best win percentages at this distance in this group of horses.

                    Woodbine - Race #2 - Post: 1:37pm - Claiming - 8.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $29,400 Class Rating: 90

                    Rating:

                    #2 C C'S KINGDOM (ML=8/1)
                    #5 U S ARMY CORPS (ML=10/1)

C C'S KINGDOM - I undeniably see good luck for this mount right here. U S ARMY CORPS - I predict an idyllic trip. Stalk the leaders, and pounce on the turn. Finished off the board last out at Woodbine, but was within 5 lengths of the winner. Opening at 10/1 makes me think he's got a chance.

                    Vulnerable Contenders: #3 SUNRISE DRIVE (ML=2/1), #7 SAMMY STONE (ML=5/2), #6 CHANCEL (ML=3/1),

SUNRISE DRIVE - The speed figure in the last race doesn't fit very well in this event when I look at the class figure of today's event. Mark this animal as a likely underpriced equine. SAMMY STONE - Disappointing speed figure last time around the track at Woodbine at 1 1/16 miles. Don't think this entrant will improve too much today. CHANCEL - Hard to keep stabbing at this sort of 'bridesmaid' horse. This gelding registered a speed figure in his last race which probably isn't good enough in today's race.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Put your money on #2 C C'S KINGDOM on the nose if you can get odds of 5/2 or more
