    Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

Presque Isle Downs - Race #2
#5 Mr. Impatient Think you can lean on him at a short kind of price here in a spot where he's meeting a bunch of stretchout types without a whole lot of compelling form on paper. No idea why he ended up in any kind of battle last out and should be finishing well today.
#1 Double Up Larry He ran OK the one time he went long, but he finished behind the top choice that day and doesn't tend to finish his races with the most energy. Not the worst idea if the top choice doesn't fire.
#2 Bengal Cat His pace makes him a danger here at least on a technicality -- because there are a couple potential forward players stretching out today who could make that a tough place to be. One of the ones if you get past the top choice, but he has had his chances and tends to give way late.
Race Summary Mr. Impatient comes in off a dull effort, but he was racing outside of his preferred running style that day and should get a decent race flow to run from off the pace today. Think he'll handle these.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #7
#3 Whispering Sea She led the way last time out, but the fact that she can rate and finish makes her even more dangerous while meeting a couple of more committed forward players. Run of the race?
#6 Anhinga I don't trust her a whole lot, but she might be the most serious speed type in here and could get in a groove if she can shake off some of the other early warriors.
#5 Going Streakin I like her local form and think she could be in the frame with this crew on the rise -- could see her falling into a really perfect pressing kind of trip.
Race Summary Whispering Sea steps up off a couple of nice wins with cheaper, but I think she gets a really good race flow today with enough pace to get first jump while avoiding an early battle.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #8
#7 Dame Maude Chardin She had little trouble with a pair of cheap groups at Mountaineer, and her local form prior included a couple races that weren't terrible. Could see her offering much better here than she did when going long in June.
#8 La Panda She's looking for her fourth score in a row here, and she has the right kind of positional pace to find a good spot within reach throughout.
#9 Bourbon Blast She tends to settle underneath while not being a serious threat, but she has honest enough rallying form that suggests she can get past some of these late for another piece.
Race Summary Giving the call to Dame Maude Chardin while looking to sweep the late double out of this barn. She can handle the local footing well enough, and she found some of her better form at Mountaineer -- let's see if she can bring it back here.

      Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

      Horseshoe Indianapolis - Race #2
#7 GATLING GIRL Ran away from well-meant firster at this level, repeat victory well within reach.
#3 FOCACCIA Bid to clear stretch lead in longer sprint, finished second as the favorite.
#5 CALCOLERY Improved zip in 6F try at this level, picks up 7 pounds at 5-1/2F today.
Race Summary GATLING GIRL shook outside pressure on the turn and drew away to a convincing maiden win at this level. She moves from the rail to the outside but needs only to duplicate that 5-1/2F effort to repeat. Bet to win and place and play 7-3 and 7-5 exactas.
      Horseshoe Indianapolis - Race #3
#9 WOODAZ Ran into fast footing off layoff in allowance company, goes well in this spot.
#8 THREE ECHOES Steps up off Asmussen re-claim, was Grade 3-placed last year as a 2yo.
#5 STRATO Troubled trip in strong race, gets class relief, on brink of six-figure bankroll.
Race Summary WOODAZ showed a lot of promise to start his career this year, capped by a 5-1/2F MSW romp against Indiana breds. He returned four months later and was no factor in a rapid-paced allowance, fresh off a :47.1 bullet workout. He fits well in here and gets the call for a win and place bet. Also play a 5-8-9 exacta box.
      Horseshoe Indianapolis - Race #5
#9 SOLRUN Solid try in turf-to-dirt comeback, remains 2-for-2 on Horseshoe lawn, draws outside.
#1 JUICY JUSTICE Two-time grass winner made brief middle move into fast fractions, starts from rail.
#3 ANNIE EXPRESS Seeks third winning rally in a row, both wins were on soft footing.
Race Summary SOLRUN saved ground, swung outside to join a photo finish in her first start this year and finished a half-length behind next-out allowance winner Molly’s Potion (3-8, $132k). She was 2-for-2 on the turf last fall and entered three times since then in races that were switched to the main track. Bet to win and place and play 9-1 and 9-3 exactas.

            # 2 MEDAGLIA FOREVER 7/5
            # 5 LE GRAND GARCON 3/1
I've got to go with SO CALLED VACATION. Is a solid contender based on figures garnered as of late under today's conditions. Must be given a chance here on the basis of the figures in the speed department alone. Has very good early lick and should fare well versus this group. MEDAGLIA FOREVER - Ran a solid last race. Solid average Equibase Speed Figs in dirt route races make this racer a definite contender. LE GRAND GARCON - Must be considered based on the very good speed rating garnered in the last race. The average class rating alone makes this horse a key contender.

Presque Isle Downs - Race #2 - Post: 3:57pm - Maiden Special - 8.3 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $36,000 Class Rating: 61

              Rating:

              #2 BENGAL CAT (ML=7/2)
              #5 MR. IMPATIENT (ML=9/5)

BENGAL CAT - Not much speed in this race other than this horse. You have to really like that recent race rating, 56, which is the best last race speed figure of this field. MR. IMPATIENT - Looking at today's class figure, this horse is encountering an easier field than in the last race at Presque Isle Downs. For my money, a bullet workout is the best indicator of readiness there is. Look at that last one - 47.2. Very impressive.

Vulnerable Contenders: #1 DOUBLE UP LARRY (ML=5/2), #4 WETLANDS WILLY (ML=5/1), #6 GRAYTE WHYTE (ML=8/1),

DOUBLE UP LARRY - This runner ran a disappointing fig last out. He shouldn't run better and will likely suffer defeat in today's race running that number. WETLANDS WILLY - Difficult to play any thoroughbred to turn things around if there is no value to taking the chance. GRAYTE WHYTE - Should be difficult for this horse to beat this group off of that last speed figure. Doubtful to improve enough to run a figure anywhere near today's class rating, so put him on the vulnerable contenders list.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: #2 BENGAL CAT is the play if we get odds of 8/5 or better
              EXACTA WAGERS: Box [2,5]

IND-R7 - FOR MAIDENS, FILLIES AND MARES THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD. THREE YEAR OLDS, 120 LBS.; OLDER, 124 LBS. IF THIS RACE IS TAKEN OFF THE TURF, IT WILL BE RUN AT 5 FURLONGS ON THE MAIN TRACK.
                RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                # 2 LOST AND FOUND 2/1
                # 7 NO SELF CONTROL 12/1
                # 13 MOMENTARIO 10/1
LOST AND FOUND looks to be the bet in here. Seems to have a very good class edge based on the latest company kept. Torres has an excellent return on investment over the past 30 days (+6) which should help bettors with this selection. Should best this field here, showing decent figs of late. NO SELF CONTROL - She has posted very strong figures under today's conditions and will probably fare well against this field. Ran a strong last race. MOMENTARIO - Gutierrez has a win percent of 17 over the last 30 days.

                  Belterra Park - Race #8 - Post: 4:05pm - Maiden Claiming - 5.0 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $10,000 Class Rating: 70

                  Rating:

                  #5 FIRST ACT (ML=9/2)
                  #3 STAY FROSTY (ML=5/1)

FIRST ACT - When Hamm gives Sosa a leg up on any noble animal, you got to know that with their win pct you have decidedly more than a fighting chance. Aboard this thoroughbred on Aug 15th and Sosa is right back in the irons this time around. No needing to look any further. This pony has my cash. Way too much pace. This animal is number one in earnings per start. He looks sharp in today's race. STAY FROSTY - Gelding took a little vacation, but has been racing into shape. Finished outside the top 3 last out at Belterra Park, but was within 5 lengths of the winner. Opening at 5/1 makes me think he's got a chance.

                  Vulnerable Contenders: #1 PROBABLY (ML=5/2), #8 BIG RITZ (ML=7/2), #7 GAME MAKER (IRE) (ML=6/1),

PROBABLY - Hasn't been getting close at all of late. BIG RITZ - No favorable outcomes for this runner in a sprint race over the last 60 days tells me that this gelding is in a very difficult situation This gelding garnered a speed fig in his last contest which likely isn't good enough in today's event. GAME MAKER (IRE) - This less than sharp equine didn't do much last time finishing third. Don't expect any change in today's race.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Putting our cash on #5 FIRST ACT to win. Have to have odds of at least 2/1 or better though
