Jeremy Plonk: Colonial Downs Spot Plays | Wednesday, 9/3

    September 2, 2025 | By Jeremy Plonk

Colonial Downs kicks off a big week of racing in Virginia that culminates Saturday with a full plate of stakes. Wednesday's 8-race card gets underway at 12:30 pm ET under what is forecasted to be beautiful conditions.

    Colonial Downs | Race 5 | 2:30 pm ET

#2 Night Time Nap (9-2 morning line odds) comes to town after a pair of solid tries to start his career in Delaware. Trainer Brittany Russell is winning 34% in dirt races at the Colonial Downs season and is 2-for-3 with Delaware shippers on the main track during that time. Win bet #2. Daily Double 2-1 to next play.

    Colonial Downs | Race 6 | 3:00 pm ET

#1 River Seine (7-2 morning line odds) brings rail speed after setting blistering fractions last out at Penn National prior to being disqualified for drifting late in the race. Trainer Elizabeth Merryman has been aces at the Colonial Downs meet (3 wins from 7 starters) and has an adept hand with turf sprinters. Win bet #1.

      Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

Presque Isle Downs - Race #6
#1 Frolic in the Park Going to give her a pass for the stakes run last time out and hope that her otherwise reliable synthetic form will hold up here. Quick enough to get in the mix from the fence.
#2 Curlin's Girl She exits the same spot as the top choice and finished up well enough that day while still coming short of a share. Her July score here was pretty solid, and something similar may do.
#5 Unbridled Peace She'll probably take some cash here, but I don't feel like she's necessarily any better than a couple others in here on everyone's respective best day. Loved her last, but there may be better offers out there.
Race Summary Frolic in the Park could be an OK price while dropping out of stakes company, and I'm willing to forgive the hard fade that day. Think she's getting a pretty perfect trip near the top today.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #7
#2 King Mendelssohn Tactical type handled the hike to this level last time out, and he may not be totally exposed over the local footing yet. Could get the cozy first-jump run today.
#8 Prince of Ayrshire Honest finisher has been solid locally, and I think he makes sense in the vertical exotics. Could be along too late for top honors again, though.
#5 Adios Buccaneer He never runs a bad one, but he has been flattening out just the tiniest bit late in his recent races, and I worry that could leave him vulnerable in the final yards again. One of the ones.
Race Summary King Mendelssohn is quick enough to be on the splits early, but I like that he can tap the brakes just a touch to avoid getting in a battle with anyone else committed to the top.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #8
#3 Tango Zulu She's susceptible to finding a horse or two who run too well on any given day, but I like that she's a pretty honest finisher for a horse at this level and doesn't need to drop all the way out the tail to find late run. Could get over the top.
#1 Twisted Empress She gets some solid class relief in this spot, and she has a little bit of pace in a race without much early burn outside of a couple stretchout players with forward form. Options near the top.
#2 Starship Radiance She needed a cheap group to graduate last time out, but that was her second step in a good direction, and she's competitive right back on the rise if she can hold that form -- or take another small step forward to land it.
Race Summary Tango Zulu and Starship Radiance offer some finishing lines on their pages that have some appeal here. The former should be a bit better number.

        Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

        Penn National - Race #1
#3 VEKOMA’S WAR (3-1) Been stuck in ‘third’ gear this year, ideally spotted for a breakthrough win.
#5 MIDNIGHT PROWLER (5-2) Seeks duplicate of near miss in 7-1/2F MSW sprint off year layoff.
#2 FLAMING SPIRIT (5-1) Even try on soft footing in well-bet debut, gets pace to run at.
Race Summary VEKOMAR’S WAR earned her top speed figure with an ‘improved’ try at one mile on the Gulfstream Park lawn in April. The race winner, Scarlet Sands, is 3-for-9 with $144k in earnings. She showed ‘late energy’ in a comeback sprint for a 23-percent dirt-to-turf barn. Bet to win and place and play 3-2 and 3-5 exactas.
        Penn National - Race #3
#6 VIROLOGIST (8-1) Live longshot after troubled trip against odds-on repeat winner.
#4 CHARM ALARM (7-2) Finished third 12 times in 27 starts, starts fresh on the class drop.
#1 SMART SHERYL LEE (8-1) Fits on best, last race not among them, price attached.
Race Summary VIROLOGIST steadied off heels leaving the far turn and didn’t change leads in the stretch, but she finished third in the same spot against 2-to-5 winner Peridot Pendant (4-12, $85k), who repeated her wire-to-wire victory in a $10,000 claimer next out. Bet to win and place and play a 6-ALL exacta.
        Penn National - Race #8
#3 GUNS N ROJAS (5-2) Steady check-getter showed some versatility, goes well in here.
#5 OFF THE MEDS (5-1) Kept good company at Delaware, third upon arrival, gets Rodriguez.
#4 COPPERHEAD CREEK (3-1) Eight-time winner at this distance might remember how in this field.
Race Summary GUNS N ROJAS was fractious in the gate under these conditions two starts ago but still managed to make a clear lead and hold well until six-figure earner Bermondsey passed by. She came from off the pace to finished third in a follow-up try on Presque Isle Downs’ synthetic track. Bet to win and place and play 3-4 and 3-5 exactas.

              # 4 TILTED TIARA 2/1
              # 3 UPTOWN SERAPHINA 3/1
              # 5 LUCKBEALADYTONIGHT 6/1
My choice in this race is TILTED TIARA. Has to be given a chance here on the basis of the figures in the speed department alone. Rodriguez will most likely be able to get this mare to break out early for this event. A solid 77 avg Equibase class figure may give this mare a distinct class edge against this group. UPTOWN SERAPHINA - The speed figure of 66 from her most recent affair looks very good in here. Has formidable Speed Figures and has to be considered for a wager in this race. LUCKBEALADYTONIGHT - With a formidable 63 speed fig last time out, will clearly be a factor in this contest. This pony has to be in condition coming back to race so soon.

                Thistledown - Race #8 - Post: 4:20pm - Allowance - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $40,100 Class Rating: 71

                Rating:

                #3 NUBLADA (ML=8/1)
                #5 DERBY DAY KISS (ML=4/1)
                #2 LARRY'S ANGEL (ML=5/2)

NUBLADA - It looks like the race should set up for a late runner. This filly's running style fits the bill nicely. That recent bullet 48.0 work shows that this filly is ready for a top race today. Expect better today as this filly gets Lasix for the second time. DERBY DAY KISS - Have to make this filly a strong challenger; she comes off a strong effort on Aug 4th. Always be wary of the longer priced horse when a trainer has an 'uncoupled' entry in a race. You have to like that most recent race rating, 78, which is the top last race speed rating of this field. LARRY'S ANGEL - This mare is almost always in the top three. I think Thistledown players know a good thing when they see the jock/handler pair of Aviles and Cowans. Their win percent together has been good.

                Vulnerable Contenders: #6 GATHA'S SONG (ML=9/5), #4 COLORYOUREGGS (ML=3/1),

GATHA'S SONG - The chalk horse is shaky here with the lack of morning drills. This low class level animal will probably get leg weary down the homestretch this time out after back to back grinding efforts. COLORYOUREGGS - Don't think that this filly has value at 3/1 this time around.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Hal - DERBY DAY KISS - This filly is stepping up with each contest. She has shown a notable points increase in her speed ratings over her last two races.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #3 NUBLADA to win if you can get at least 4/1 odds

                  # 8 LIL BUT DELICIOUS 3/1
LOVE OF GRACE gets the edge as the bet in here. Looks competitive for the conditions of this contest today, showing solid figures in dirt sprint races as of late. Tough to pass on this mare with Oliveros in the saddle. SHELLY THE ROCKET - This trainer has the strongest ROI in this group of animals with entries racing at this distance and surface. Stokes has been sizzling the last month, winning at a nifty 20 percent clip. LIL BUT DELICIOUS - This filly obviously likes the distance, going 4 for 9 in her races lately.

                    Colonial Downs - Race #5 - Post: 2:30pm - Claiming - 8.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $28,000 Class Rating: 83

                    Rating:

                    #9 COBBLESTONE BRIDGE (ML=7/2)
                    #2 NIGHT TIME NAP (ML=9/2)
                    #6 HOMER JONES (ML=4/1)

COBBLESTONE BRIDGE - Was in a $30,000 Claiming race at Colonial Downs in the last race. That affair had an Equibase class figure of 88 and he is moving down in this event. A certain solid contender. A pony coming back this rapidly after a solid effort is a good sign. This gelding's last rating notched on August 16th is tops in last race Equibase speed figs. NIGHT TIME NAP - Toledo's agent must like anytime Russell gives them a mount; winning pct together is tremendous. Looks like the lone speed of the race. Should be tough on the front-end. Ranked at the top of the list in earnings per start. Another confirmation that this animal has the class to win today. This horse coming off a good performance in the last month is a win candidate in my humble opinion. HOMER JONES - I like to see fast workouts. This gelding's last one was very good. Second fastest of the day. This rider and trainer's horses have been producing a profitable ROI. Entered a $16,000 Claiming race at Colonial Downs last time out and raced on the soft turf finishing sixth. Should do much better today.

                    Vulnerable Contenders: #3 TRACK RANGER (ML=5/1), #8 HASTEN (ML=6/1), #1 ODORICO (ML=6/1),

TRACK RANGER - Tough to support any horse that runs as well as he did and then lays up and doesn't workout at all. Only beat maiden claimers last out. It's going to be very tough for this entrant to repeat versus winners. When examining today's class rating, he will have to notch a better speed rating than last time out to be competitive in this dirt route. HASTEN - Last performed on August 20th at Colonial Downs, finishing fifth. Unlikely to get better off of that effort today. ODORICO - Didn't look so great last out. Probably won't make an impact in today's event. Pedestrian speed figure last time out at Ellis Park at 1 1/16 miles. Don't feel this pony will improve too much today.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Have to go with #9 COBBLESTONE BRIDGE on the win end if we get at least 3/1 odds
