Brian W. Spencer: Del Mar Spot Plays | Friday, Sept. 5, 2025

    September 5, 2025 | By Brian Spencer

Del Mar's closing weekend gets underway with an 8-race card that features the I'm Smokin Stakes for Cal-breds in Race 7. Just 3 cards remain on the season, including today.

    Del Mar - Race 4

#8 Potito: Expected something a touch better from him last time out, but I still think there might be another small step forward in him while making just his fourth start back off the long layoff. Not a ton of upside, but maybe just enough.

#9 Case Hit: Speedy type has just failed to stay late in the last two turf sprints, but he figures to be in another good spot turning for home and seems as likely as any to land it from there.

#10 Midnite Musket: Wanted better last time around, but he also has some room to come forward off that run while making his second start of the summer. Some midrange price appeal with his best stuff.

Race Summary: Thought Potito was sitting on a winning run last time out, but that also looks enough like the case again today. Hoping the price will be similar to what he offered last time out.

    Del Mar - Race 6

#6 Counterbalance: She showed a bit of mild interest last out in that dirt run, but the pedigree suggests there may be some upside in the second career start while moving over to the turf. Think she can hit hard today.

#9 Olivia: Spent some time considering this one on top, and she'd be no surprise in here while going second out. She can probably sustain that pace better here with that route debut under her belt, but I worry about some forward stretchout players making the front just a touch too inhospitable today.

#11 Hypergamy: Honestly looks like nothing but upside on all counts here -- the pedigree says yes to added ground and the debut run gave her plenty to build on. Wouldn't argue too hard, just worry the price will get a touch too short.

Race Summary Counterbalance outran her price at first asking, and the turf route might work in her favor to find a great spying trip behind what might be a fair pace.

    Del Mar - Race 8

#6 French Moonlight: Think she's coming out of an OK race when second last time out, and I like the way she keeps heading in the right direction. Small step forward today would do the trick.

#12 Warm Reception: She took a step back last time out after the solid two-back run, but that leaves her some room to bounce back with something better today for a piece of this.

#1 We The Hobby: Reliable underneath type typically runs her race, but she also keeps finding one or two horses just a bit too tough for her each time she runs. Wouldn't be a shock to see a similar outcome here.

Race Summary: French Moonlight is moving the right way, and she caught a decent winner last time out in her first try over the local course. Lots to like today.

Al Cimaglia: Meadowlands Early Pick 4 Analysis

      September 5, 2025 | By Al Cimaglia

The Meadowlands starts the weekend with a 14-race card featuring the New Jersey Classic Finals for two-and-three-year-olds. The 0.50 Early Pick 4 with a $50,000 guaranteed pool starts in Race 6, and the sequence will be my focus. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

      Race 6 (8:25 PM EDT)

3-Elista Hanover (8/5)-Program chalk is the one to beat winning 3 of the last 4. Stormed home with a 54.4 back half and bounced back from a dull effort in the previous start. Was off 27 days following that effort and will fully expect her to be dialed on high from start to finish.
4-Bravo Angel S (6-1)-My initial choice was to single the morning line choice, but if not to also take a swing for a juicy price. The Engblom pupil has the speed but like the rest of the field will need an advantageous trip to cash the top check. Jason Bartlett should work a smooth journey with this post draw and could make some noise if minds its manners. Tries hopples for the 1st time, will look for improvement and also use in gimmicks.

      Race 7 (8:50 PM EDT)

4-PA Perfect (6-1)-Going to fade the program chalk 3-Perfect Thought (9/5), and take a swing for a price shot to be in the hunt at the wire. Corey Callahan is at the controls and wasn't in between the pipes in last. But he did steer 2 back, brought home the freshman at M1 and paid off at 20-1. Finally draws inside and that puts this one in the hunt at the wire.
5-Car Keys (2-1)-This gal makes only her 4th lifetime start and came close to beating Perfect Thought last week losing by only a neck. May have been closer than that or might have won if Dexter Dunn got her to stay straight going through a tight hole down the lane. That was a sign of being green, but the Chris Ryder filly looks like it has more to give.

      Race 8 (9:15 PM EDT)

2-The Rogue Prince (3-1)-The Walner colt fits well with this group and its versatility can set him apart from others. Tim Tetrick has options when the wings fold and best to respect.
4-Mountcastle (5-1)-Beaten chalk needs an efficient route but he isn't alone. Scott Zeron could work suck-around trip and roll by down the lane. This is another who comes off a couple of good tries and this time should be a square price.
6-Onajetplane (5/2)-The Noel Daly trainee got up in time last week for the 3rd win in 4 starts. This is probably the one to beat but isn't a lock. Has won 5 of 9 this year and is similar to #2, can win off different trips.

      Race 9 (9:40 PM EDT)

1-Papis Pistol (7/2)-The Sam DePinto entry comes off a big try leaving from post 8 and was used early and late. Came a good 3rd and will add points that Bartlett sticks and steers for the 2nd straight time. The Papi Rob colt is best racing near the top of the stack and should get that trip without burning a lot of gas when the wings fold.
5-Manolete (2-1)-Captain Optimistic will take money, should be the chalk and is a main threat. The Bruce Sanders pupil will be bet, but will offer more value and comes off a big gate to wire score. Stood tall going a 27.2 3rd quarter and could not be tackled down the lane by Captain Optimistic. Zeron should provide a smooth trip with this post draw. Could step-up with the fastest mile of his career.

      $1 Early Pick 4

      3,4/4,5/2,4,6/1,5
      Total Bet=$24

Laurel Park Pick 4 | Friday, September 5

        September 5, 2025 | By Frank Carulli

        LAUREL PARK PICK 4
        Friday, September 5, 2025

Laurel Park’s turf course has six configurations. It’s a good thing because six races are scheduled on the grass when the track’s Fall Meet begins this Friday, Sept. 5. The Late Pick 4 features three turf races. Here’s a closer look with a suggested 50-cent Pick 4 that costs $28 to play:

LRL 5th (2:02 p.m. EST) -- QUAMASH set the pace in back-to-back turf route races but settled for minor awards. He broke awkwardly, hit another gear nearing the far turn and held okay for third two back, then was overhauled by a pair of deep-closing co-favorites on a ‘yielding’ course last out. He can upstage seven in-the-money finishes in his 11th start today. FURIOUS GEORGE showed little in his lone turf sprint try, but he ran well enough in a 6F follow-up on the main track to warrant a second look. He stalked and passed the 4-to-5 winner after he was floated wide in the stretch and battled gamely to finish second. ALL FRUITS RIPE owns the top grass sprint figure in the field, but the rivals he faced in that photo-finish setback at 5-1/2F are a combined 29/1-3-2 since then, so I’ll pass on him for lack of value.

LRL 6th race (2:29 p.m. EST) -- Brittany Russell, the leading trainer in Maryland the last two years, and Penn National-based conditioner Todd Beattie always have their first-time starters ready to run. Russell is 39-for-127 (31 percent) with debut runners at Laurel Park the last three years and – get this – only six were dismissed at higher than 6-1 odds. Beattie is 14/3-3-3 with debut runners in the last year, with all but two being dismissed at 9-2 odds or less. Russell’s SHARE SUCCESS and Beattie’s MALIBU’S RUMRUNNER will carry the Pick 4 hopes.

LRL 7th race (2:59 p.m. EST) -- Five of the six entrants is this one-mile turf allowance arrive off maiden victories from throughout the Mid-Atlantic region, while DAKOTA CAM, a MSW-breaker at this distance on the main track, tested stakes company after her victory. But LAW SCHOOL was by far the most visually impressive of the group. She sped off to a clear lead and exploded in the Parx stretch to win by 12-1/4 lengths at 5-1/2F in a faster time than a 2yo MSW sprint for the boys in the next race. If she handles the added distance and the transition to turf, she should be back in the winners’ circle. RADAR LOOP makes the ticket after she benefited from a front-end duel but rallied past a pair of sub 2-to-1 favorites to graduate at one mile on the Monmouth Park lawn.

LRL 8th race (3:27 p.m. EST) -- It’s anybody’s race in the finale, a $45,000 maiden claimer at 5-1/2F, so hit the ‘ALL’ button. HIPS CHAMP exits a double ‘key’ race. STEWBALL finished in the money from on and off the pace at 5-1/2F. LUCA MACHINE earned the field’s top speed figure in a photo-finish setback in his only start for a claiming tag. CHIMNEY SWEEP arrives off back-to-back runner-up placing in MSW company on the turf. JESTER SANG tries to upgrade a series of five consecutive in-the-money finishes. FAROOQ showed speed off the layoff and worked in :47 since then on the main track.

        Suggested 50-Cent Pick 4
        LRL 5th Race: 4, 7
        LRL 6th Race: 3, 5
        LRL 7th Race: 1, 3
        LRL 8th Race: ALL
        Cost: $28

Scott Shapiro: Del Mar Saturday Late Pick 5 Analysis

          September 4, 2025 | By Scott Shapiro

Opening Day and Pacific Classic Day are the two biggest afternoons of the year at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, but closing weekend has always had a special place in my heart as well. Between having all the data from the previous weeks and the Grade 1 two-year-old races, it has been an enjoyable and profitable time on the calendar in the past. Hopefully, I have another good one in me in 2025.

I will be diving into the final two late Pick 5’s of the summer at Del Mar on this blog over the next few days starting with the Saturday afternoon sequence. A very playable series of races kicks off with a two-turn turf stake for 2YO fillies, includes the John C. Mabee (G2), and concludes with a full field allowance event over the sod. Let’s get to it!

Grade Descriptions: Grade A=Highest degree of confidence; Grade B=Solid Play. Grade C=Least preferred or pass; Grade X=probable winner but likely at odds too short to play.

Race 7: Del Mar Juvenile Fillies Turf
          Grade: B-
Main Ticket: 8 Queen Bay; 9 Improbable U
Backups: 11 Yours Sincerely; 2 Soaring Angel

Forecast: #8 Queen Bay commanded $350k at the OBS March 2025 sale, got hammered down to 2-5-favoritism on debut in late May at Santa Anita going five furlongs, and delivered. The Charlatan filly won nicely in that first start and is out of a mare that thrived going two-turns on the grass. She looms large with the major question being the time off in published drills from late July into August and the lack of racing since the stylish victory. For that reason, I will also use #9 Improbable U on all tickets. The daughter of Improbable was run down by the impressive last-to-first winner #11 Yours Sincerely on August 16, but has plenty of room to move forward. Trainer Jonathan Thomas is 0 for 14 with 2YO first-time starters in turf routes over the last 2 years, so I am expecting big improvement off of a solid first out effort just 3 weeks ago.

          Race 8:
          Grade: B-
Main Ticket: 1 Wayne the Brain; 8 Clouseau
          Backups: 2 Lyell’s Song; 6 Firmus

Forecast: Trainer Mark Glatt holds a strong hand in this first-level allowance over the main track. #2 Lyell’s Song fits well in here, but looked like the winner in both of his starts this summer at Del Mar yet fell short due to a massive hang job. Perhaps the addition of blinkers will help the Cairo Prince gelding seal the deal, but I prefer his stablemate #1 Wayne the Brain. The son of Mitole got a good setup in his return race, but was caught four-wide into the turn when making a move good enough to finish second beaten less than a length. If he breaks well in his second start off the 11-month layoff, he could prove tough to catch late from his inside draw. #8 Clouseau also intrigues. The 5YO gelding moves back to the main track for the first time since he was claimed by trainer George Papaprodromou this spring. He has 6 career wins over the dirt and attracts Umberto Rispoli.

          Race 9: John C. Mabee (G2)
          Grade: C+
          Main Ticket: 4 Medoro
Backups: 6 Kentucky Gal; 7 Gimme a Nother

Forecast: The lone graded stake of the sequence is not a race I have an overly strong opinion in. #4 Medoro makes the most sense though after struggling to relax early, but pulling away late against restricted stakes company in the Osunitas during the first week of the meet. It is encouraging the Peter Eurton trainee is able to piece back-to-back races together. She should find herself in a favorable forward position in a race that lacks serious early speed. #6 Kentucky Gal is one of 4 in this year’s John C. Mabee for trainer Phil D’Amato. She might not be good enough, but the pace advantage makes her an intriguing option underneath at the very least. The move to Edwin Maldonado further enhances her chance of being sent aggressively in her second start of the form cycle.

          Race 10:
          Grade: B
          Main Ticket: 5 Titanic Thompson
          Backups: None

Forecast: I like #5 Titanic Thompson to break through for his first lifetime victory over the dirt in this state-bred first-level allowance at 6.5-furlongs. The Nick Alexander homebred had things his way, but was down on a dead rail when nailed at the wire on July 18. He returned on August 10 and did not make the lead and had traffic issues before they turned for home. The Grazen colt should make the lead easily under jockey Juan Hernandez and have plenty left late to seal the deal.

          Race 11:
          Grade: B-
          Main Ticket: 10 Transcending
          Backups: 1 Beets
Forecast: This one-mile excursion over the Jimmy Durante Turf Course for fillies and mares appears #10 Transcending’s to lose. The Helder Family Stables filly made her first start in the States and off a 13-month layoff on July 19 going 5-furlongs in what was almost certainly a prep for this spot. She finished off the board that day going far shorter than she prefers, but it was not a race flow that was remotely favorable to those coming from off the pace. The European import shook off the rust last out and should be primed for much better in the Saturday finale.

                # 11 SPLENDIFEROUS COWBOY 20/1
KJ HONKTONK COWGIRL looks strong to best this field. Has been racing solidly and has among the most competitive speed in the race for today's distance. Lately Garcia has been hot which may give the edge to this filly. With a nice class fig average of 88, has one of the most competitive class advantages in this field. CAPSHAW HEZE - Boasts strong Speed Figures on average overall when measured up against the rest of this group of horses. Has been running soundly lately and ought to be close to the lead early on. SPLENDIFEROUS COWBOY - Looks very good to be close to the lead at the first call. Could beat this group given the 81 speed rating put up in his last outing.

                  Remington Park - Race #8 - Post: 9:16pm - Optional Claiming - 5.0 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $41,000 Class Rating: 104

                  Rating:

                  #4 HALMSTAD (ML=6/1)
                  #7 BAD BEAT BRIAN (ML=3/1)

HALMSTAD - Changes tracks from last out at Lone Star Park to here. Multiple wins at multiple race tracks tell me this horse likes to switch it up, so that's a good sign. BAD BEAT BRIAN - This gelding is rounding his way back into shape. Should race well today. I really like that last effort on Aug 23rd at Ellis Park where he finished first. In my opinion, you need 'class' to be successful on the turf. This one has the highest average Equibase class figure in the group. Is ranked number one in earnings per race entered. A powerful outing in today's race can augment the lifetime total.

                  Vulnerable Contenders: #3 JACKMAN'S RIDE (ML=5/2), #1 GENERAL SHIPMAN (ML=5/1),

JACKMAN'S RIDE - This morning-line choice ran on August 8th and hasn't had a drill after that. GENERAL SHIPMAN - This horse just hasn't looked fit lately.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Put your money on #4 HALMSTAD on the nose if you can get odds of 3/1 or more

                    # 1 BASSCOAT 10/1
                    # 4 FEELTHEBEAT 6/1
BIG PAPER has a strong shot to take this race. With a nice Equibase class rating average of 91, has one of the strongest class advantages in this field. Looks very strong for the conditions of this race today, showing solid numbers in dirt route races recently. Win percentage one of the most competitive in this group. BASSCOAT - Is worth a look and may be a wager - strong speed figures (75 average) at today's distance and surface as of late. Has competed solidly in dirt route races. FEELTHEBEAT - Put up a formidable Equibase speed fig in the last race. Can run another good one in this affair. Should finish in the top three without any trouble.

                      Woodbine - Race #7 - Post: 7:24pm - Maiden Optional Claiming - 7.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $49,200 Class Rating: 74

                      Rating:

                      #6 SOUPER EFFECT (ML=7/2)

SOUPER EFFECT - This gelding is rounding his way back into shape. Should compete well today. While the finish was disappointing, this magnificent animal made a good stretch move in the last race at Woodbine. Will most certainly do better in today's race. Has a pretty good chance to break maiden changing to the main track in this event.

                      Vulnerable Contenders: #5 JUST JACOBO (ML=8/5), #2 COUNTRYBOYSURVIVE (ML=2/1), #4 SPIRITUAL MAN (ML=6/1),

JUST JACOBO - Difficult to play this mount this time out. Make him show you something in a short distance race before you play him in a race of 7 furlongs. COUNTRYBOYSURVIVE - Not likely that the rating he earned on August 17th will be enough in this affair. SPIRITUAL MAN - 6/1 is not enough of a reward to take on most any horse that has run poorly in back to back efforts.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #6 SOUPER EFFECT to win if you can get at least 1/1 odds
