Race of the Week: FSS Dr. Fager at Gulfstream | Sat.

    September 3, 2025 | By Jeremy Plonk

    The Lead:
The three-tiered Florida Sire Stakes Series gets underway Saturday at Gulfstream Park for the 44th time as the co-featured Desert Vixen for the fillies and Dr. Fager for the colts & geldings share the marquee. Both $100,000 stakes are 6-furlong launching pads for 2-year-olds who will be tasked to 7 furlongs on October 18 then 1-1/16 miles in the series finale November 29. The Race 8 Desert Vixen boasts a standout favorite in Lennilu, winner of the Royal Palm Juvenile on turf locally before a Group 2 Queen Mary third-place cracker at Royal Ascot. The gambling focus instead will be the Dr. Fager in Race 10.

    Field Depth:
CAMIGOL is Grade 2-placed, while SQUIRE is listed stakes-placed. Five of the eight have some stakes experience despite limited starts.

    Pace:
CAMIGOL has the rail and a wire-to-wire win on his ledger. He's probably the pacemaker here with FOURTH AND CENTRAL from the outside the most likely early threat. The pace does not look overwhelming on paper, but could heat up if ALL TO WIN and/or SQUIRE get into the mix.

    Our Eyes:
    Here are my horse-by-horse notes.

#1-CAMIGOL: Neolithic colt has 3 starts under his belt and gained valuable experience at Saratoga when third of 4 in the Grade 2 Saratoga Special. He's back in with Florida-breds Saturday, a level at which he broke his maiden by nearly 6 lengths in his second outing. Rematches with Fourth and Central as that pair finished a neck apart May 31 in the debut for both. Trainer Antonio Sano is 1-9 at Gulfstream with horses coming off Saratoga roadtrips since 29 with a trio of third-place efforts.

#2-I'M TUFF ENOUGH: Florida-bred maiden victory is sandwiched between a couple of no-threat efforts, most recently sixth at 21-1 in the Proud Man Stakes. Regular rider Miguel Vasquez returns for the low-profile Mark Passley barn in search of its first stakes win in at least a decade, according to Betmix.

#3-RISTRE: Maiden enters off a debut runner-up July 30 at Gulfstream for a $25,000 claiming tag. Ronald Coy gets jockey Jesus Rios re-engaged. He piloted last year's Dr. Fager winner Rated By Merit and looks for back-to-back scores. Son of Gunnevera, a South Florida star who banked $5.5 million in winning races like the Fountain of Youth and hitting the board in the Travers, Pegasus World Cup, Breeders' Cup Classic and Dubai World Cup.

#4-JAMALAMADINGDONG: First-time starter cross-entered Sunday in a local maiden special weight sprint. Typically successful trainer Jose D'Angelo not known for debut success and is 1-for-33 this year with juvenile rookies. Sire Cajun Breeze is fantastic with first-time starters and the D'Angelo-Edgard Zayas tandem is as good as it gets during this meet. Mixed signs. The mare has 2 foals to race, 1 of which was a Pimlico debut winner.

#5-ALL TO WIN: August 2 debut winner makes his first start since that popular score at 6-5 odds. SIgnificant about the debut was the 6-furlong distance, making this Win Win Win colt 1 of only 2 in the FSS Dr. Fager with a score at the race's distance (with Trelawny). Game victory taking heat and pulling clear late and has 3 strong workouts on the tab since then right on cue. Rohan Crichton-Emisael Jaramillo team to a 24% win rate.

#6-SQUIRE: Royal Palm Juvenile runner-up as the 4-5 favorite on May 10, this will be the first appearance since for the singe-gelded son of Leinster. He'll head from turf to dirt and back to the surface over which he won an April 18 debut dash. Trainer Patrick Biancone was third in this race last year with Classic of Course and the barn is hitting at a 31% win rate in 2025. Bullet workout and resume point to potential public favoritism.

#7-TRELAWNY: After a debut maiden victory and a solid fourth in the Proud Man Stakes, the Jose Pinchin trainee takes his first crack at Florida-breds. Back-to-back starts at 6 furlongs give him a foundation edge on several of these. From the first crop to race by Uncle Chuck, a brilliantly fast Bob Baffert trainee who retired after the Travers and only 3 starts, winning the Los Al Derby. Uncle Chuck is off to a blazing 6-for-25 start with his first crop.

#8-FOURTH AND CENTRAL: Michael Yates trained last year's FSS series dominator Rated By Merit and will look for another trip to the well with this May 31 debut dash winner. Cajun Breeze gelding returned Aug. 9 in the Proud Man Stakes over a sloppy track, encountered early trouble and never got involved. His Aug. 23 bullet workout indicates he could be primed in his first try against state-bred company.

    Most Likely Exotics Contender:
TRELAWNY is proven over the distance training on cue up to the third start of his form cycle.

    Best Longshot Contender:
ALL TO WIN didn't get a huge speed figure in his debut win, but I love the training pattern since and should be a solid price.

    Sending it in ($100 bankroll):
$25 exacta part-wheel TRELAWNY, ALL TO WIN with TREELAWNY, ALL TO WIN, FOURTH AND CENTRAL ($100).

Jeremy Plonk: Kentucky Downs Spot Plays | Sat. 9/6

      September 4, 2025 | By Jeremy Plonk

The biggest card of the meteoric Kentucky Downs season features 6 stakes races at $2 million-plus and 12 races overall worth just over $14 million combined.

      Kentucky Downs | Race 5 | 2:48 pm ET
#6 Cleopatra Serene (7-2 morning line odds) should be forwardly placed throughout off a solid, dueling second at Colonial Downs last out. Runners from Virginia have been strong at KD over the years and this meet has continued to spotlight their value. Catches a field with mostly mid-level track experience. Win bet #6.

      Kentucky Downs | Race 7 | 3:59 pm ET

#13 Lagynos (4-1 morning line odds) smashed the competition in the Tapit Stakes here August 28 and concerns about a quick turnaround are lessened when you consult the stats. Trainer Steve Asmussen is 8: 4-0-1 all-time when running a horse twice at the same Kentucky Downs meet, going 3-for-3 in 2023-’24 combined. Lagynos has a strong 2-for-3 local record and loves the course. Win bet #13. Exactas 13 over 1,7,9.

      Kentucky Downs | Race 11 | 6:21 pm ET

#3 Tawny Port (10-1 morning line odds) exits the 2-1/16 miles Gold Cup, which runs in a canter and should be a positive to his conditioning while returning on quick rest. Horses running back second time at the Kentucky Downs meeting in 2024 went a sharp 13: 4-2-1 with winners at $10, $11, $16, $21 ($2.31 ROI for every $1 bet). Tawny Port ran one of the signature races of his career on a 2-week turnaround in the Lexington as a 3-year-old. He was third in this race last year and note trainer Miguel Clement has pulled all the right strings with his stable this summer, needing only modest improvement. Win-place bet #3.

Al Cimaglia: The Meadows PASS Championship Pick 4 Analysis

        September 6, 2025 | By Al Cimaglia

The Meadows has a stacked 13-race card featuring Pennsylvania Sire Stakes Championships for 3-year-olds. Races 5-8 have the most significance as they include four $300,000 PASS Championship races. That is also the sequence for a $0.50
Pick 4, which has a $10,000 guaranteed pool, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

        Race 5 (2:05 PM EDT)

1-Hangover (6/5)-Not sure drawing the rail will be a great benefit for the Ake Svanstedt pupil. Might wire the field but could be better served not trying to go gate to wire. Dave Palone is a very good driver to have at the controls, and this filly deserves respect. Using, but will also use another that won't be a very small price.
2-MS Prada (9/2)-The Ron Burke entry with Ronnie Wrenn might look to get on the point early on. Has done good work at Mea (8-3-2-1) and from the inside the Greenshoe filly should be in the hunt at the wire. Did lose to the one above 2 back starting from post 1, so my guess is this gal could be overlooked and payoff at better than 9/2.

        Race 6 (2:25 PM EDT)

2-Big Shoes (7/2)-Ships back from Kentucky where overall the results were good. Now is back on an oval where it hasn't missed the board in 4 races and has taken 3 pictures. Has a post edge that Yannick Gingras will exploit. Could land on the engine and make every call a winning one.
3-Meshuggah (6-1)-The Marcus Melander entry should like being back on this oval. Has raced 4 times at Mea and has banked over $188,000 (4-2-2-0). Recent form has been dull but isn't out of place with this crew. This could be wake-up time at a big number.
4-Cheers Hanover (7/2)-The Burke 3-year-old is usually in the money except when it breaks stride. Taking steps is a risk but has been good the last 3 starts. Ronnie Wrenn should have this one racing near the top of the stack and to be in play turning for the wire.

        Race 7 (2:45 PM EDT)

1-Mike And Minnie (8/5)-Ships in from the Red Mile and is looking for its 7 straight win. This is a monster 3-year-old filly and if she brings her best game the win streak will continue. Many will single and will get no argument from me. But her only loss this year came from the rail, and just in case that matters here, will use one other that has a 149.2 mark at Mea this year.
2-Time Of The Season (6-1)-This is a fast filly who has hit the board in 10 of 12 at Mea (12-5-5-0). Andrew McCarthy is between the pipes, and it looks like there is a good chance of a pocket ride happening. Will need to trip out to win and should reward backers with a nice payout if that happens.

        Race 8 (3:05 PM EDT)

7-Louprint (3-1)-Leaning this way primarily because this is the best horse on this oval and it has a post edge on a very tough customer, #8-Prince Hal Hanover. Twisted Destiny is no slouch and starts from the pylons but not sure the Chris Ryder colt can go gate to wire this time. The other X-Factor is Ronnie Wrenn Jr who is a very good driver and is at his best on smaller ovals. Lou can leave, get a decent seat, and doesn't have to be on the point from start to finish to cash the top check. Will look for this hometown favorite to be a cut above the rest and to continue winning.

        $2 Pick 4

        1,2/2,3,4/1,2/7
        Total Bet=$24

Hong Kong Jockey Club – Season Preview & Key Dates

          September 5, 2025 | By Johnny Burke

An incredible season of racing in Hong Kong ended with a thriller of a card at Happy Valley. The last season featured only the second Triple Crown winner in history, the emergence of a new legend in the sprinting division, and a host of memorable Group Stakes and international prestige events. As fans and bettors eagerly await its return, we can look ahead to the key fixtures and race dates in the upcoming season.

Season Opening Day | September 7

The 2025-26 season opens at Sha Tin with a daytime card on September 7

Hong Kong International Races (HKIR) | December 14

Last year’s Hong Kong International Races (HKIR) was an historic day for racing in Hong Kong. The spectacle featured local legends KA YING RISING winning the Hong Kong Sprint and VOYAGE BUBBLE taking the Hong Kong Mile. With a strong emphasis on international challengers and world-class jockeys, this year’s HKIR is sure to be an unmissable event for racing fans.

Centenary Sprint & Stewards’ Cup (First leg of HK Triple Crown) | January 25

Another showcase for local legends, the Centenary Sprint Cup & Stewards’ Cup were won by KA YING RISING and VOYAGE BUBBLE, respectively. For VOYAGE BUBBLE, this was the start of his Triple Crown campaign, a historic run that captivated the racing world. Featuring numerous Group One races and thrilling stakes, the kickoff to the Hong Kong Triple Crown gets underway on January 25 at Sha Tin.

Hong Kong Classic Mile | February 1

The Hong Kong Classic Mile is the first leg of the Four-Year-Old Classic Series, which has produced champions such as MY WISH (2025), VOYAGE BUBBLE (2023), ROMANTIC WARRIOR (2022) and GOLDEN SIXTY (2020). This year’s crop should be primed for yet another historic running, with plenty of stacked fields for bettors to analyze before they head to the gate.

          Queen’s Silver Jubilee Cup | February 22

Last season’s Queen’s Silver Jubilee Cup was yet another showcase of the sprinting prowess of international star KA YING RISING. As the second leg of the Hong Kong Speed Series, it was a dominant performance that will surely be tough to top. As we look ahead to this year’s edition, we can only hope to see a repeat of the quality that cemented KA YING RISING as a name we won’t soon forget.

Hong Kong Gold Cup (Second Leg of HK Triple Crown) & Classic Cup | March 1

The second leg of the Hong Kong Triple Crown will be run on a separate day from the Queen’s Silver Jubilee Cup this year, as the ten-furlong bout joins the Classic Cup for a loaded card. Last year’s edition was won by none other than VOYAGE BUBBLE as part of his campaign for Triple Crown glory. This year’s card pairs the middle jewel of the Hong Kong Triple Crown with the second leg of the Four-Year-Old Classic Series, the Hong Kong Classic Cup.

Hong Kong Derby | March 22

Rounding out the Four-Year-Old Classic Series, the Hong Kong Derby will hopefully crown a clean sweep for Hong Kong's top four-year-old. As the ultimate battle in the Four-Year-Old Classic Series, the local series for this division showcases what the city’s crop has to offer and emphasizes the importance of continued success in Hong Kong for local connections.

FWD Champions Day | April 26

FWD Champions Day features three Group One races: the QEII Cup, Champions Mile, and Chairman’s Sprint Prize. KA YING RISING continued to dominate the sprinters’ division with yet another title in this year’s Chairman’s Sprint. Nearing the end of the season, FWD Champions Day is the perfect appetizer to the American Triple Crown as the prep season comes to a close in America.

Standard Chartered Champions & Chater Cup (Third Leg of HK Triple Crown) | May 24

Last, but certainly not least, we hope to have yet another Triple Crown on the line when the spotlight hits the featured races on May 24th. This past year, we witnessed history and glory as VOYAGE BUBBLE completed his campaign for the Hong Kong Triple Crown at the age of six. Besting the competition across three different distances, the title was taken for the first time since its only prior winner, RIVER VERDON, achieved the feat in 1994. While another Triple Crown title would make for a truly historic season, as fans we can only hope to witness such a remarkable achievement.

Season Closing Day | July 12

At long last, the Hong Kong racing season will come to a close at Sha Tin on July 12th.

            Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

            Del Mar - Race #7
#11 Yours Sincerely Not sure you're getting the 5/1 ML offering, but count me in if it's on the board. That first local start was super easy on the eyes, and I think she's a handful here as the proven route form -- and good form at that.
#6 Cara Rose I respect the one who beat her two starts back and goes from the rail here, but I'm a little bit more excited to see this one try two turns. Think she'll find a good spot.
#9 Improbable U She stayed on well enough behind the top choice last time out and has some room to come forward with just that one start under her belt, but she was absolutely zero match for that one's late kick there. Still....think she can play with these.
Race Summary Yours Sincerely was a lot of fun to watch in that graduation score here last month, and I think she might end up being legit -- handling this group the way I think she might would be a good first step in proving that. Cara Rose is intriguing enough to cover.
            Del Mar - Race #9
#9 Hang the Moon Have honestly never been the biggest believer in this one, but this is about the time last year she got really good for a little bit, and she'll go second off the break today with some upside into the same point of the summer. Nothing to write home about in the comeback run, but if she's still got something in the tank, she'll presumably show it today -- and her best stuff handles these.
#7 Gimme A Nother Wouldn't argue too hard with anyone landing here, but I just worry a tiny bit about the way that she can't seem to get her nose on the wire despite being in spots to score in the lane in most of them. Could seal the deal here.
#4 Medoro I like that she shows up every time, and that American Oaks run stands out as something that would keep her in the picture here when she wasn't embarrassed by She Feels Pretty. In the mix.
Race Summary Hang the Moon might be a playable price on the board, as the other listed pair are likely to take enough cash to keep the board balanced. Wanted to see better from her last out, but I am assuming we will today.
            Del Mar - Race #11
#2 Yellow Sun Dress There's enough pedigree here to get her around two turns in this first route try, and I like the race she exits a little bit. Could see her finding the right kind of first-run trip today.
#4 Motet No confidence in her repeating that effort from last time out, but that's now two solid turf starts in a row, and she's sure to be another big price even off the good try. Might be useful underneath and in the swings.
#11 Skatingthroughlife No clue how this race is going to get bet, but I'm especially interested to see this one on the tote (and track) ahead of this. There is some stretchout appeal today and some upside with just two lifetime starts to her name, but she'll have to fire fresh while routing off the bench. I think we're supposed to respect her -- trust your gut.
Race Summary Yellow Sun Dress is one of a few who should offer midrange prices in here, and I also think you could have a little fun with a horse like Motet at a big number -- there is a lot of ugly form on her page, but the four best tries are all on the turf, and she's not the craziest swing when you just isolate those starts.

              Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

              Gulfstream Park - Race #1
#3 LEROY BROWN (5-2) Showed pulse as 2yo, returns in new barn after voided claim in October.
#2 LIVE TO RIDE (9-5) Battling severe case of seconditis, will be underlay with 0-8 synthetic mark.
#1 PRINCE OF DANGER (7-2) Takes the plunge off seven-month layoff for first start as a gelding.
Race Summary LEROY BROWN, a beaten favorite in 2 of 3 starts as a 2-year-old, makes his seasonal debut in a new barn nonetheless. He drops in claiming price, gets Lasix for the first time and should sit a good stalking trip from just off the pace. Bet to win and place and play 3-1 and 3-2 exactas.
              Gulfstream Park - Race #2
#6 EASY ANSWER (15-1) Troubled trip behind recent stakes victor, price stab is the answer.
#10 WESTHAMPTON (8-1) Good recovery after getting carried out on first turn, draws outside again.
#11 REMINDER (2-1) Solid turf numbers going long, ran well off longer layoff last fall.
Race Summary EASY ANSWER, a runaway debut winner in MSW company, made a wide middle move in an allowance route in his first start on the turf when last seen in June. The race winner, Layabout, came back to win a stakes race. He gets in light-weighted and could prove a live longshot on the big class drop. Bet to win and place and play a 6-10-11 exacta box.
              Gulfstream Park - Race #3
#4 LOBO GO (2-1) Rushed to lead, gave way in stretch, class drops for second start.
#3 LAO WAY (20-1) Improved with blinkers, worth using in gimmick wagers at a price.
#8 SENOR MONEY (6-5) Hit board in 5 of 6 on conventional dirt, second in lone try at this level.
Race Summary LOBO GO set the pace to the quarter pole before the odds-on winner passed by. He faded to finish a distant third but can carry his speed farther today for half the claiming price. Bet to win and place and play a 3,4/3, 4, 8/ALL trifecta.

                    # 9 NINE OCLOCK CEASER 5/2
                    # 3 JOY IN GRACE 2/1
                    # 2 LIGHT FAST FEET 9/2
I think about NINE OCLOCK CEASER here. Will likely be one of the leaders of the pack going into the halfway point of the outing. The speed figure of 79 from her last race looks solid in here. Is a strong contender based on figures posted recently under today's conditions. JOY IN GRACE - Could provide positive gains based on respectable recent Equibase Speed Figs with an average of 78. With a nice class figure average of 85, has one of the most respectable class advantages in this group of horses. LIGHT FAST FEET - Should definitely be carefully examined for this event if only for the competitive Equibase speed fig posted in the last competition. This mare looks good for this event since Grieves has a solid win percentage with horses going this distance.

                      Rating:

                      #9 MICHAELA (ML=6/1)

MICHAELA - This filly should give a good account of herself in today's clash.

Vulnerable Contenders: #4 PRETTY THING (IRE) (ML=2/1), #3 SERENE KATHLEEN (ML=5/2), #5 UNBOUNDED MOVEMENT (ML=9/2),

PRETTY THING (IRE) - This entrant hasn't been on the track since August 9th. Not even any morning drills. The move down the homestretch on August 9th indicated to me that this horse will have a tough go of it versus this group of stronger opponents. SERENE KATHLEEN - She's in all probability going to get roasted on the front end. UNBOUNDED MOVEMENT - Just cannot wager on this entrant. Didn't show me anything positive in the last race or on Jul 5th.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #9 MICHAELA to win if we can get at least 1/1 odds

                        Prairie Meadows - Race #6 - Post: 6:36pm - Allowance - 8.3 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $52,416 Class Rating: 85

                        Rating:

                        #5 ELLLL E (ML=8/1)
                        #4 QUIET I'M NOT (ML=5/2)
                        #3 C'MON LUCKY (ML=4/1)

ELLLL E - Looks like the lone speed of the race. Should be tough on the front-end. Nice win percentage this jock and conditioner tandem have been putting together. I know the outfit is serious today. The mare gets Lasix for the first time. QUIET I'M NOT - Looking at today's Equibase class figure, this thoroughbred is up against an easier field than last time out at Prairie Meadows. I like to bet on this handicapping angle, a thoroughbred coming back off a solid effort within the last month or so. The recent bullet 35.8 work should put this filly on track for today's effort. A great handicapping angle is going on Lasix for the first time. Chleborad gives it to this one for this event. C'MON LUCKY - Have to make this filly a contender; she comes off a good effort on Aug 17th. Multiple wins in this horse's life, all at Prairie Meadows. Could add another win in this race.

                        Vulnerable Contenders: #1 KANOJO (ML=6/5), #2 GLAD VON D (ML=6/1),

KANOJO - August 8th is the last time we've seen this filly around. Have to be a little bit leery. GLAD VON D - Earned a most unsatisfactory rating last time out in an Allowance race on August 1st. Not likely to see an improved performance off of that figure.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #5 ELLLL E to win if you can get at least 3/1 odds

FINE WHINING looks very strong to best this field. The winning percentage shown by horses entered by Contreras running at this distance are the top in this group. Has been running solidly lately and will probably be on or close to the lead early on. This horse has been consistently racing well recently. FOXY SISTA - Is difficult not to consider based on speed figures which have been competitive - 70 avg - of late. With Acosta aboard her, this mare ought to be able to break out sharply in this contest.
