Al Cimaglia: Hoosier Park Late Pick 4 Analysis

    September 12, 2025 | By Al Cimaglia

Hoosier Park starts the weekend with a big 15-race card. The headliners roll in Race 9-The Jim Doherty Memorial Trot for 2-year-old-fillies, and in Race 11-The Peter Haughton Memorial Trot for 2-year-old colts and geldings. The 0.50 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 12, it has a $10,000 guaranteed pool with a low 12% takeout, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 12 (9:43 PM EDT)

2-Siesta Sandman (7/5)-Winner of 3 races in the last 4 and 2 straight, appears to be a cut above this group. Trace Tetrick will be out and rolling as soon as the wings fold. Will use one other in case it doesn't get his way on the lead this time. The race should go through the Tyler George pupil, the only concern is being able to win if wiring the field isn't going to happen.
4-High Speed Swan (3-1)-If the morning line choice is to be denied, it will likely be because a stalker was able to roll by down the lane. The Erv Miller trainee made a rare break in last but still finished 3rd and will assume that was a one-off. Atlee Bender should be well positioned, in striking range turning for the wire, and may offer some value.

    Race 13 (10:06 PM EDT)

2-Swan Jewel (6-1)-Hasn't been able to beat the top fillies so far but did get its 1st win on Lasix last time. The game plan will be to fade the morning line chalk #8 Fifty To Win (7/5). Will look for a price, Bender should be able to work an efficient trip and this gal could be just starting to get good.
3-Better Tak'em (2-1)-Tried to wire the last field and was beaten by the one above who came out of the pocket to win. Lost by a neck last time and has beaten better at HoP this summer. Hopefully won't be over bet and certainly could bounce back.
7-Bluebied Lola (10-1)-This is another swing at getting a winner that could be overlooked and has been improving. Does take on better and this will be a test. It is the 3rd start for Ron Burke and has raced well in the last 2 efforts. Showed good gate speed in last and stayed flat to come 2nd. Should offer a nice price and could be sitting on a big try.

    Race 14 (10:29 PM EDT)

2-Fox Valley Kodiak (4-1)-Came away 3rd in last and rallied to come 2nd, beaten by the pocket horse. Now faces others who also hit the board. Will look for Kyle Wilfong to get the pocket trip this week and take its turn in the winner's circle.
7-Rolling Image (3-1)-Raced well in last but faded a bit down the lane and finished 3rd. Went a 26.4 opening quarter and that may have taken its toll. But raced gamely and this time leaves from post 7 rather than post 3. Did close in 26.4 and this race could set up differently. May look to come off cover later in the mile and not burn as much gas to get the lead early on.

    Race 15 (10:52 PM EDT)

5-Lucky Jade (4-1)-Came away nicely last time at 11-1 and got on the point. Did relinquish the lead around the opening turn and was jammed up when the leader broke stride and suffered an inference break. Drops back to the level of the last win 2 back and will look a big try in this spot.
9-Rock My Memory (3-1)-Comes off a 4th place finish and like the one above drops to the level of its last win that came 2 back. Has been difficult to beat at this level and this post draw will help the price. Has enough gate speed to get a close-up seat and with a smooth trip should be right there at the wire.

    $1 Late Pick 4

    2,4/2,3,7/2,7/5,9
    Total Bet=$24

Laurel Park Pick 5 | Friday, September 12

      September 12, 2025 | By Frank Carulli

      LAUREL PARK PICK 5
      Friday, September 12, 2025

Laurel Park’s Pick 5 will begin this Friday with $37,265 in the carryover pool. It’s never an easy sequence, but it’s surely worth constructing a ticket for the 50-cent wager.

LRL 5th (2:02 p.m. EST) -- ITALIAN SYMPHONY gained 5-wide in the stretch in a grass route at Monmouth dominated by deep closers. But he earned a good speed figure for his new barn, a point validated when the race yielded two next-out winners and three runners-up. BODECREAM won turf marathons on firm and soft footing recently to push his grass earnings toward $500,000. He draws outside but is tough to leave off the ticket. PASSIONED has two wins and a second the last three times he made the lead going a route of ground. He can put hIs speed to good use in his first start on turf in two years. GENERAL’S DUTY was bottled up in traffic two starts ago and finished out of the money in a one-mile grass race that came back strong. He made a 5-wide middle move in a longer route race last out to get in winning range before leveling off.

LRL 6th race (2:29 p.m. EST) -- Somebody has to win this $16,000 maiden claimer. The field is a combined 14/0-0-0. Only one entrant topped a 20 Beyer speed rating and only one ran beyond 6F on the dirt. Go 6-deep in Leg 2 of the Pick 5.

LRL 7th (2:59 p.m. EST) -- BAY OF BENGAL dueled inside of the favorite until he faded in the stretch when last seen seven months ago. The sixth, eighth and 10th-place finishers won in their next start, two with 78 Beyers. He returns as a gelding in a new barn and can make good use of his speed in this spot. WICKED BOSS’s lone turf try was okay. He rallied 3-wide into the stretch with the odds-on winner in hot pursuit and finished fourth, but he, too, could hold a tactical edge today.

LRL 8th race (3:27 p.m. EST) -- CHANGE MY WORLD ‘sparred head-to-head’ with a repeat winner and a next-out runaway in the final 1/8th but finished third, upping his allowance record to 8/1-2-4 since a February maiden win at Laurel Park. KNOCKANARA missed by a nose in his bid for four consecutive turf sprint victories. RYEDIGGITYDOG finished 1-2 in 6 of his last 8 turf sprints, three times as the favorite.

LRL 9th race (3:58 p.m. EST) -- BELLA CATTIVA was eager to go while under a snug hold to the far turn, then put away the 2-to-5 favorite and won easily at Timonium. Wearing blinkers made a big difference in her second start and she is taken to repeat as today’s solo play.

      Suggested 50-Cent Pick 3
      LRL 5th Race: 3, 6, 7, 11
      LRL 6th Race: 1, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8
      LRL 7th Race: 3, 6
      LRL 8th Race: 3, 7, 9
      LRL 9th Race: 3
      Cost: $72

        Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

        Remington Park - Race #7
#4 Talkin Cadee She has been in the mix with some of these in recent races and didn't have the easiest go of things last time out. Not sure she's quite as classy as a few of the others in here, but that may help keep the price playable.
#2 Take Me Serious She has been competitive with similar stakes groups in the past and just handled a few of these in that score last time out. Finding her home again on the lawn?
#5 Miss Code West She's the talent of this group, but her best game comes on the main track and I'm not totally sold on her form going long on the turf. Dangerous, but I'm skeptical.
Race Summary Talkin Cadee should get a really good run of things while tracking the pace, and I'm hoping she'll be just a touch overlooked in this group.
        Remington Park - Race #9
#8 Sonic Posse Think he's the controlling pace from out here with some reliable form on his page. His better stuff stacks up fine with this group, and I bet we get a mildly playable number. Some appeal here.
#5 Excaping the Blues Tactical speed has been so honest on the grass and looks tough with these with his baseline effort. He just handled a few of these in recent starts, including the top choice, and he has an obvious claim on a fourth straight score.
#1 Tap the Dot Wouldn't be a surprise to see him land this one with a decent groundsaving trip likely waiting for him from the inside. One of the ones, but I assume he'll get bet more heavily than he should.
Race Summary Sonic Posse has some pace to put to use from the wide draw, and he has been very good over this turf course in the last couple seasons.
        Remington Park - Race #10
#5 Red Hot Shot He and #12 Sagebrush Runner appear to have been working together ahead of this, so get a look at both of them on the tote and track for this barn. This team has had a few prices run in the mix in similar spots over the last couple years. Maybe here?
#1 Pass the Roses He showed a little bit of tracking pace before retreating in the debut run, but he has worked twice since then and brings some reasonable upside to this second start. Enough to like.
#9 Threesocks He's another fresh face for a capable team, and I think this is the kind of spot where you can trust your eyes a bit ahead of this to see who looks ready. But on paper, he looks like one of the ones.
Race Summary Red Hot Shot debuts as one of the first-timers in here, but I have enough interest here on paper to give him first look in the paddock ahead of the finale.

          Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

          Laurel Park - Race #1
#2 MA MA MA MY VEKOMA Ascending numbers, finished behind two follow-up winners in turf route.
#6 LADY MEIS Well-traveled 5yo loomed boldly 4-wide, leveled off in lane with another low-70 Beyer.
#7 HOP TO IT Useful debut on Penn National lawn for barn that does well with grass routers.
Race Summary MA MA MA MY VEKOMA is on the improve – and so are they two rivals who beat her in a one-mile MSW turf race at Colonial Downs. Amie’s Symphony came back to win a $93,000 allowance and Power Dance went wire-to-wire as the favorite. Bet to win and place and play 2-6 and 2-7 exactas.
          Laurel Park - Race #2
#3 ITWILLBEFUN Makes the rounds, starts fresh, troubled fave upon exiting triple ‘key’ race.
#6 SEASIDE ROAD Worked forwardly for return but didn’t factor at bullring, broke maiden at Laurel.
#2 NANCY MARY Rallied for share at three distances to start year, lack of pace in here a concern.
Race Summary ITWILLBEFUN exited a one-mile race two back at Churchill Downs that produced three follow-up winners with an average 80 Beyer. She ‘stumbled’ as the beaten favorite next out at Ellis Park but can make good use of her speed in this spot with an alert break. Laurel is her sixth stop in 11 starts. Bet to win and place on today’s Best Bet.
          Laurel Park - Race #4
#2 BEACH COWBOY Adapted well to off-pace tactics, just missed in another photo finish.
#4 SOUTHERN HORSE Last-to-first move at Timonium always worth a second look.
#1 ESTILO MAGICO Rallied past the dueling favorites but was out-kicked for the victory.
Race Summary BEACH COWBOY backed off after flashing early speed, then launched a 4-wide bid on the turn and just missed his third win in a row after a hard stretch battle. He can handle the class rise with a 4-for-11 record intact. Bet to win and place and play 2-1, 2-4 and 4-2 exactas.

                Thistledown - Race #6 - Post: 3:20pm - Allowance - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $38,400 Class Rating: 74

                Rating:

                #6 SPECTACULAR D'ORO (ML=2/1)
                #1 JUDY'S COMET (ML=12/1)

SPECTACULAR D'ORO - Early speed is always important in horse racing, but the lone speed horse is always dangerous. Is ranked highest in earnings per race entered. A powerful try right here in this race can increase the lifetime earnings. JUDY'S COMET - Don't discount that last race. The equine fired out with good early speed, only to drop back and then hold ground to the finish. Dropped in class last race out, running against the same type today.

Vulnerable Contenders: #3 MAGIC MOTOWN (ML=9/5), #2 RUNAWAY POWER (ML=7/2), #4 ROLLIN MY WAY (ML=5/1),

MAGIC MOTOWN - The morning-line favorite is suspect here with the lack of morning drills. RUNAWAY POWER - No pace in this race to help this rallier's chances. ROLLIN MY WAY - This gelding probably needs a more conducive pace scenario to make his furious rally. When looking at today's class rating, he will have to earn a much better speed figure than in the last race to vie in this dirt sprint.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Put your money on #6 SPECTACULAR D'ORO on the nose if you can get odds of 3/2 or more

                  RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                  # 4 PRINCE PRANCEALOT 6/1
                  # 1 PETESOLDFASHIONED 6/1
                  # 6 YOGI BOY 5/2
PRINCE PRANCEALOT looks to be a formidable contender. This colt has a good win percentage in dirt sprint races. Looks strong to be up on the lead at the first call. The Equibase Speed Figure of 84 from his last affair looks very good in here. PETESOLDFASHIONED - Fresu has a win percentage of 19 over the last 30 days. Is a contender - given the 92 speed figure from his most recent race. YOGI BOY - Has very good speed figs and has to be considered for a bet in this event. Profitable rider and trainer team, with a +4 return on investment.

                    Woodbine - Race #7 - Post: 7:30pm - Claiming - 7.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $28,600 Class Rating: 75

                    Rating:

                    #3 AWE INSPIRED (ML=12/1)
                    #1 DIVA'S GHOST (ML=15/1)

AWE INSPIRED - Coming off a seventh place finish at Woodbine, some may skip over this horse. I'm not. He just missed hitting the show spot, and has decent morning odds today. This rider/conditioner duo has been producing a very lucrative ROI, right at +90. This gelding should be in top form, this far into his form cycle. DIVA'S GHOST - Always be wary of the longer priced animal when a trainer has an 'uncoupled' entry in a race. I think Woodbine players know a good thing when they see the jockey/conditioner tandem of Alderson and Gittens. Their win percent together has been strong. This gelding should be at the fitness peak, this far into his form cycle.

                    Vulnerable Contenders: #5 SOUPER ICONIC (ML=2/1), #7 IMPERIAL GOLD (ML=3/1), #6 A LA CARTE (ML=7/2),

SOUPER ICONIC - If you keep selecting these kind of 'bridesmaid' types, you're going to be let down most every time. IMPERIAL GOLD - In the last event this racer finished sixth. Doesn't look good for his chances this time. A LA CARTE - Hasn't finished in the money in any sprint races of late. Improbable to see him doing it today either.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - DIVA'S GHOST - Although he ran eighth on August 23rd, the try wasn't half bad. Expect a strong effort this time out.

                      Race 2 - Claiming - 8.0f on the Dirt. Purse: $24500 Class Rating: 74

FOR THREE YEAR OLDS AND UPWARD WHICH HAVE NEVER WON TWO RACES. THREE YEAR OLDS, 120 LBS.; OLDER, 124 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $8,000
                      RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                      # 1 MR BRIZEL 5/2
                      # 11 PAXTON 15/1
                      # 3 SONG SO SWEET 10/1
MR BRIZEL is the most favorable bet in this race. Solid average speed figures in dirt route races make this animal a key contender. Reyes has a win percent of 23 over the last 30 days. Could beat this group given the 79 speed figure garnered in his last outing. PAXTON - Looks respectable for the conditions of this competition today, showing solid figs in dirt route races recently. Must be given consideration given the class of races run recently.
