Northfield Park begins the week with a 15-race card. The $1.00 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 11. The sequence has a $10,000 guaranteed pool with a low 14% takeout, and it will be my focus. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 11 (9:40 PM EDT)

5-G A Speed Expert (9/5)-The Jason Irwin 4-year-old made its Nfld debut last week and DH'd for 2nd. Left from post 6 and was double bubbled into the opening turn and that most likely cost the win. It won't be 5/2 this week but should be better with a race on the oval. Aaron Merriman will blast out, but this time meets a field without much gate speed. Should get the top without burning much gas and can reward backers at a small price.

Race 12 (10:02 PM EDT)

6-Warrawee Yang (9/2)-Started from post 7 in last and that trip didn't work. Then 2 back left from post 6 and was hung in the opening quarter and that trip took its toll. This is the 2nd start here in sequence, has won 6 of 22 races this year, and could be sitting on a big try.
7-Kildare King (9/2)-Beat this kind 2 back and then was hung the mile leaving from post 8. Actually, has had post 8 in 3 of the last 4 races and now gets a bit of post relief. Starts outside of the only one that could out-leave this veteran but will rely on Merriman to work a winning trip.
9-Legacy Affair (5/2)-Ships back from Scioto and lands at a level where the 4-year-old mare has excelled. Has taken 5 pictures in 16 starts and has won 3 times against this kind since the end of June. The price on the 4-year-old mare would be much smaller with a choice post draw. Needs to get a decent early seat and #2 and #3 should show early speed. With a smooth trip, is more than capable of cashing the top check.

Race 13 (10:24 PM EDT)

6-Ideal Funding N (2-1)-This 7-year-old is having a very nice 2025, winning 5 out of 16 starts and took a picture in its Nfld debut last week. Got on the engine, didn't look back with Merriman between the pipes, and was claimed by the Adam Short barn. That outfit has preformed well over the last 30 days, posting 27% winner and Merriman sticks. This looks like a spot to immediately reward the new connections.

Race 14 (10:46 PM EDT)

7-Winter Soldier (3-1)-The Stable.ca bought this 4-year-old in a private purchase at the beginning of August. So far it looks like a sharp buy and now drops to face similar to its win on 8-25. Beat the NW8000 in his debut, then lost by a neck after stepping up to face Open Handicap company. Has shown enough gate speed to get a close-up seat and if AMac provides a sharp steer it could be picture time.
9-Magical Journey (12-1)-Should fit with this crew and the morning line price is right to take a swing. The question is whether Chris Lems can get away into a decent seat from the 2nd tier. The 2 starting on the inside have some gate speed and could help the cause if they provide a path when the wings fold.

Hawthorne - Race #1

#5 Fight the Power	As always, take a look at the debuters ahead of this on the tote and track, but this one has a little bit of appeal for me on paper, so I'll start my work here. Not much to write home about from the rest so far, and you don't run into a pair of Rivelli debuters or anything in here like you might in other local 2yo spots -- won't take a star to score.
#1 Bridge Classic	He's got a little bit of rail pace in a soft spot, and it wouldn't be a surprise to see him carry that a bit better if he can clear these at all heading into the turn. One of the ones.
#3 Gogh	He moved forward at second asking and seems in the mix here with something similar, but I worry that he's going to get bet for a capable team in a modest race, and I think you can do better.
Race Summary	Fight the Power looks appealing enough to me first time out even though I think eventually he'll be a bit better going longer -- this just doesn't feel like a strong spot for the local level.

Hawthorne - Race #5

#1 Chef Ray Wiley	I don't really trust anyone in here, so I'll take what I hope is a midrange price on this guy while getting around two turns. Think he could find the right kind of tactical spot from the inside while in behind a couple quicker players early, and the pedigree suggests this short route should be in range.
#7 Frontier Marshall	Torn here -- the price is likely to be short, but his baseline stuff quite obviously keeps him in the mix, but his only route try was dreadful, and he has given away ground in the stretch call of all but one career race. Respect the team, form, and pedigree, but I don't want an odds-on price to see if he can see out the route trip.
#5 Daisy Mae Attack	There is some other potential stretchout pace in here, but she might be the controlling tempo and could stick around for a piece of this. Still, the pedigree is sprinty, and she always gives way late, so I think a lot needs to go right for her on a cozy tempo to land this.
Race Summary	Chef Ray Wiley has shown a mild ability to get past horses in some of his races, and I think that could play well in a spot where I don't see a whole lot of reliable finishing form. A handful of the logical players are at least somewhat questionable to see out the trip, so maybe he can grind past these late.

Hawthorne - Race #7

#6 Rietta	Think she gets the run of the race while sitting just a touch off a couple of quicker players early -- I'm looking for something pretty close to that three-back run from a style standpoint, and I think that kind of trip gives her a chance here.
#4 Star Blessing	Loved her last when rolling a local crew on the front end, and the potential pace from the stretchout player on the rail is the only thing that kept me from landing on top with this one. She has yet to prove she can rate, so an early battle with that one could be bad news. Still, I'm not strongly against her and respect her last quite a bit.
#2 Suprise Me Again	Reliable multi-surface finisher has been fine in her turf starts, and there aren't a ton of knocks against her in this spot for me except maybe a somewhat unappealing number on the tote.
Race Summary	Fun race where I think you can make a big case for any of the top three, but Rietta may be the best price of them all and could find a really perfect spying trip from the outside while Star Blessing and the rail horse settle early scores.

ENDLESS REIGN - This gelding is a key contender based on his earnings per start in dirt route contests. Could provide positive dividends based on solid recent Equibase Speed Figures with an average of 80. BOLD N BREEZY - With a formidable 76 Equibase Speed Fig last time out, will unquestionably be a factor in this outing.

AGENT KELLY - When this jock and trainer combine forces you have to take a look. Villalobos and Shankle have been wonderful together. I think this gelding is ready to run a good one. He's had enough outings since the vacation and should be fit. SHEAR MAGIC - After the event aboard this equine on Aug 22nd, the jock is going to be acquainted with the gelding much better. The return on investment when Karamanos and Kelly team up is out of sight. I like to bet on this handicapping angle, a racer coming back off a nice effort within the last 30 days. COLLECTED DREAMS - If you review the PP's for this horse, you'll see she has recorded the top speed fig at the distance and surface. A repeat effort right here and this horse has a superb chance to win. I think this filly is ready to run a good one. She's had enough outings since the layoff and should be fit. GREAT ARTIST - Lets try to beat the favorites with this gelding. Just missed last out, but ran a pretty good race.

Vulnerable Contenders: #1 CORRECTED PEDIGREE (ML=2/1), #9 TIK TOK DADDY (ML=4/1), #3 GO TO BINGO (ML=5/1),

CORRECTED PEDIGREE - I don't normally play a favorite that hasn't been to the track in the last 3 weeks. If you keep choosing these sort of 'hanger' types, you're going to be frustrated most of the time. TIK TOK DADDY - This horse likes to land in the top three, but doesn't usually win. Leave out of the top spot. Notched a run-of-the-mill fig last time around the track in a non-classified race race on August 14th. Doubtful to see an improved performance off of that figure. GO TO BINGO - The speed rating in the last race doesn't fit very well in this affair when I look at the class rating of today's race. Mark this thoroughbred as a possibly overvalued equine.

CHICKS DIG CAPES - This group is much softer than the last one he faced. Must be given consideration based on the very good Equibase Speed Figure recorded in the last contest. DERMOT'S DILEMMA - Ought to be considered as he drops to compete against this less demanding field. Simpson has an excellent return on investment over the past month (+36) which should help wagerers with this pick.

FONTABELLE - Filly looks like the lone speed here. She may turn the race into a procession. Ness brings this filly back into a race rather than a workout. He knows his filly is on top of her game. Strong winning pct this jockey and trainer duet have been putting together. Filly has shown some speed. This shorter trip should be better for her. Trainer, Ness, has been deliberate with this filly off the layoff. Look for a solid effort today. Have to give this filly a shot. Ran a good race last time out within the last month or so. PADRINO'S GOLD - The jockey/handler tandem of Lopez and Simone has a strong ROI together. Moves back to a distance at which she ran a figure good enough to make her a contender today. RITZ ON BROADWAY - She keeps getting closer at the finish with each and every start. A thoroughbred coming back this promptly after a sharp effort is a good omen.

None to be found in here to set things up for this horse.

2^nd race [NY, Md Sp Wt, 6F TURF] – (5) Atenea (C) was bet down from 5-1 to 7-2 in her second start while getting blinkers on, set the pace, and finished second in her second start. (3) Fancy Lights (B) was hard to load, raced greenly down the stretch, and finished third in her first race at 5-1. (1) Ticket to Ride showed early speed last time on a sloppy Saratoga track but before that ran third from off the pace in a turf sprint in July. (6) Tiza Smokeshow was third in her race at Parx Racing last month at 7-2.
4^th race [Athenia, 1 1/8 mi TURF] – (6) Flowers for Me (A) finished second with a stalking trip behind a front-end winner on a speed favoring track. (8) Awesome Czech won her last two starts including the NY-bred Yaddo at Saratoga coming from off the pace. (5) Moonage Daydream won three NY-bred stakes in a row prior to finishing second in the Yaddo where she had the lead in the stretch briefly. (3) Bod Beach hit the board in all three of his starts with the first two at Monmouth in unrestricted maiden special weights and then an auction price restricted race at Saratoga. (4) Escape Hall set the pace in his debut and finished third as the 5-2 favorite at the Spa.

(7) Always Practical has been racing against tougher competition at Saratoga.
