Devils Begin Four-Game Road Trip Against Avalanche

New Jersey Devils at Colorado Avalanche (-110, 5.5)
    DEVILS (12-9-1) at AVALANCHE (10-13-1)

TV: MSG PLUS RADIO: WFAN 660 AM

    LAST 10: New Jersey 6-4-0; Colorado 3-7-0

SEASON SERIES: First of two meetings, with Colorado visiting New Jersey on March 15, 2012. The Avalanche beat the Devils at Prudential Center in the most recent matchup, 3-2, on Oct. 15, 2010. TJ Galiardi finished with a goal and an assist.

BIG STORY: For a team with a talented young nucleus, Colorado finds itself in the bottom third of the NHL in scoring, averaging just 2.46 goals per game. Third-year forward Matt Duchene has a team-leading 9 goals and 17 points, but the Avalanche could use someone in the group of Milan Hejduk,David Jones and Paul Stastny -- all of whom have 7 goals and 14-15 points -- to step up his scoring and give the offense a boost.

    TEAM SCOPE:

DEVILS: This is the start of a four-game road trip for New Jersey, which also faces a pair of division leaders in Minnesota and Toronto, and makes its first trip to Winnipeg in nearly 16 years. Bidding for a home-and-home sweep of the Islanders this past weekend, the Devils were dealt a 3-2 defeat on Saturday when Zach Parise's apparent game-tying goal with 2.1 seconds left was overturned when video review determined he had "used his right skate to propel the puck into the net." Goals by Adam Larsson andAdam Henrique had erased earlier one-goal deficits.

"I watched the play, I'm not sure I agree with the decision," coach Peter DeBoer said. "Based on my view of the replays, I wouldn't consider what I saw a distinct kicking motion, but I don't get to make those decisions. You live with it, and you move on."

AVALANCHE: With three left to play on a mammoth eight-game homestand, Colorado only has two wins so far and continues to struggle at Pepsi Center. The Avalanche have scored just two goals in their last three defeats, with Kevin Porter managing the lone tally in Monday's 3-1 loss to the Stars. On the plus side, new No. 1 goalie Semyon Varlamov, who has struggled in making the transition to Denver after an offseason trade from the Capitals, turned in a solid outing with 32 saves. Varlamov has allowed just a pair of goals in each of his past three starts.

"We're squeezing the sticks. It's very frustrating," Hejduk told the Denver Post. "We weren't good enough. We aren't scoring goals. We got good enough goaltending to win again, but we let him down."

WHO'S HOT: Larsson, the No. 4 pick in the 2011 NHL Draft, is starting to display his offensive upside for the Devils with 1 goal and 4 assists during a five-game points streak. … Stefan Elliott, a second-round pick by the Avalanche in 2009, scored in his NHL debut Saturday against the Oilers and assisted on Porter's goal against the Stars.

INJURY REPORT: New Jersey forwards Travis Zajac (Achilles), Jacob Josefson (collarbone) and Eric Boulton(hand) are on injured reserve. … Colorado forward Peter Mueller (concussion) and defenseman Erik Johnson (groin) are on injured reserve.

STAT PACK: Parise is off to a slow start for the Devils, with just 6 goals and 12 points in 22 games, but his 77 shots lead the team by a wide margin -- Petr Sykora's 59 are second. … Gabriel Landeskog, taken just ahead of Larsson this past summer with the No. 2 pick, leads the Avalanche with 79 shots.

PUCK DROP: When it comes to special teams, New Jersey has been much better off this season while shorthanded. The Devils have the League's top-ranked penalty kill (94.2 percent) and have scored three shorthanded goals. However, their power play checks in at 26th (12.8 percent) and has allowed a League-high five shorthanded goals, including Michael Grabner's game-winner in the third period against the Islanders on Saturday.

"It's deflating," goalie Martin Brodeur said. "I think you get an opportunity to try to take the game to a different level, and you get scored on. It's tough. These are momentum switchers in a game that are tough for guys to handle mentally, and especially to go back on the power play after, you're a little more tentative."

      ICE PICKS

      Wednesday's Best NHL Bets

New Jersey Devils at Colorado Avalanche (-110, 5.5)

The New Jersey Devils are coming off a tough 3-2 loss against the Islanders to split their home-and-home series and even though that was four days ago, they’re still fuming about the way it went down.

After Ilya Kovalchuk was stripped of the puck by Michael Grabner for a shorthanded tally to give the Islanders a 3-2 lead in the third, Zach Parise appeared to tie the game with just two seconds left in regulation. However, the war room team in Toronto disallowed the goal.

"Based on my view of the replays, I wouldn't consider what I saw a distinct kicking motion, but I don't get to make those decisions,” New Jersey coach Pete DeBoer told reporters. “You live with it, and you move on."

The loss overshadows the fact that the Devils are playing much better lately. They have won four of their last six overall and were tied for ninth place in the Eastern Conference with the Caps heading into Tuesday night’s action.

Not bad considering Kovalchuk has just five goals. The Devils will come out flying after a few days off.

      PICK: New Jersey

Montreal Canadiens at Anaheim Ducks (-110, 5.5)

How bad have things gotten in Anaheim? Bad enough that Bobby Ryan is practicing with the third line as the Ducks are reportedly shopping him to any team that will listen – which basically works out to the other 29 clubs in the league.

The New York Rangers are one club that have supposedly talked to Anaheim about the winger who scored 34 goals and 71 points last season, but has only seven goals and 11 points this year.

Whether anything comes of these trade rumors is a crapshoot, but something’s going to have to be done with the Ducks, who have dropped seven straight and were just a point out of last place heading into Tuesday’s action.

"There's no excuses. I just hate excuses,” veteran Teemu Selanne told reporters. “Everybody has a job to do, and it starts from there. Do your job. Not talking. It should be simple, but I guess it's not. We shouldn't even talk about anything. Enough talking."

Montreal has dropped three of four, but you can’t play Anaheim here until the Ducks switch something up.

      PICK: Montreal

        Preview: Wisconsin at North Carolina
        By Brian Edwards

Wisconsin Badgers at North Carolina Tar Heels (N/A)

The 13th edition of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge will continue Wednesday night with a six-pack of games, including a high-profile matchup between Wisconsin and North Carolina in Chapel Hill.

As of early this morning, most betting shops had the Tar Heels listed as eight-point favorites with a total of 135.

Roy Williams is hoping what happened in Vegas (losing) this past weekend will stay in Sin City because UNC dropped a 90-80 decision to UNLV as a 7 ½-point favorite at The Orleans Arena.

Chace Stanback was the catalyst for the Runnin’ Rebels, scoring 28 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. Harrison Barnes and P.J. Hairston paced the Tar Heels with 15 points apiece, while Jon Henson finished with 11 points and eight boards.

Barnes rolled his right ankle and was reportedly seen leaving the arena on crutches. His status for Wednesday is considered ‘questionable,’ but reports out of Carolina indicate that Barnes practiced Tuesday and will most likely play barring a setback.

Barnes averages a team-high 17.3 points and 4.8 rebounds per game. Henson is nearly averaging a double-double, scoring 15.8 PPG while grabbing 9.8 rebounds per contest.

North Carolina (5-1 straight up, 3-2 against the spread) opened the season with a 67-55 win over Michigan St. as an 8 ½-point ‘chalk.’ Since then, it really hasn’t faced anyone of note. The Heels drilled South Carolina 87-62 in their first game out in Las Vegas.

Wisconsin (6-0 SU, 3-0 ATS) has dealt out woodshed treatment to all six of its opponents by 17 points or more. Bo Ryan’s squad is coming off a 73-56 win over Brigham Young as a 7 ½-point favorite at Sears Centre in Chicago.

Ben Brust drained seven 3-pointers en route to scoring a game-high 21 points for the winners. Jordan Taylor, the Badgers’ All-American candidate at point guard, scored 18 points to go with eight assists and five rebounds compared to only one turnover.

Through six games, this has been a vintage Wisconsin team under Ryan. The Badgers get after it defensively, run their offense deep into shot clocks and take quality looks. They lost three starters from last year’s team that lost to Butler in the Sweet 16.

Wisconsin hasn’t been tested by any top-tier teams yet, beating up on the likes of Kennesaw St., Colgate, Wofford and Bradley. Taylor is averaging 11.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 5.8 assists per game. He’s a physical guard who can control tempo and get into the lane to make plays consistently.

The ‘over’ is 4-1 overall for UNC, while the ‘under’ has cashed at a 2-1 clip for the Badgers.

Tip-off is scheduled for 9:30 p.m. Eastern on ESPN.

        **B.E.’s BONUS NUGGETS**

As of early this morning, most books had the Bulldogs as 10-point favorites with a total of 137 ½. The Irish suffered a devastating blow when leading scorer Tim Abromaitis tore his ACL at last Friday’s practice. He was averaging 14.0 points and 7.0 rebounds per game.

--Michigan St. will take on FSU tonight at Breslin Center at 7:30 p.m. Eastern on ESPN. The Spartans were favored by 5 ½ at most spots this morning. The total was 123 ½.

Wednesday's Betting Tips: Barnes To Suit Up For UNC

NCAAB: Wisconsin is 5-1 against the spread in its last six.

NCAAB: Duquesne is riding a 4-1 stretch against the number.

NHL: Boston is 11-1 in its last 12 overall.

NHL: St. Louis is 6-2 in its last eight.

          WHO'S NOT

NCAAB: Notre Dame is 0-5-1 against the spread in its last six.

NCAAB: The under is 0-4 in North Carolina’s last four overall.

NHL: Winnipeg is 4-14 in its last 18 as a favorite.

NHL: Tampa Bay is 3-13-1 in its last 17 meetings with Detroit.

          KEY STAT

6- The No. 17 Pitt Panthers have covered in just six of their last 19 neutral-site games heading into Wednesday’s City Game with Duquesne. The battle between the two schools separated by just a few miles in downtown Pittsburgh will be held at the Consol Energy Center.

          INJURY THAT SHOULDN'T BE OVERLOOKED

Dewayne Dedmon, USC Trojans – Dedmon may miss up to six weeks with a stress fracture in his right foot after an MRI Monday revealed the injury to his fifth metatarsal. The 7-footer, who is wearing a walking boot and using crutches, has averaged 7.7 points and 6.0 rebounds through his team's first seven games. Dedmon earlier this season suffered a fracture in his right hand during practice and had to wear a splint until Nov. 9. The Trojans visit UC Riverside Wednesday.

          GAME OF THE DAY

Wisconsin Badgers at North Carolina Tar Heels (-8, N/A)

          NOTABLE QUOTABLE

“Watching the film, I think it’s an easily winnable game. If we play our game, we should blow these guys out. That’s just how I feel.” – Philadelphia Eagles defensive end about Thursday’s matchup with the Seattle Seahawks. The Eagles, who have dropped three of their last four straight up, travel to Seattle on the short week after a blowout loss to the Patriots. Oddsmakers have the Eagles set as 3-point favorites.

          TIPS AND NOTES

Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Sidney Rice is not expected to play in Thursday's game against the Philadelphia Eagles. Rice suffered a concussion in Sunday's game against the Washington Redskins that "basically rules him out," Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said. It is the second concussion suffered by Rice this season. The first, which occurred against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 10, did not force him to miss a game. Rice has appeared in eight games this season, hauling in 29 receptions for 449 yards and one touchdown.

Montreal Canadiens defenseman Andrei Markov could make his long-awaited return to the lineup Wednesday. Markov, who practiced again Monday, hasn't appeared in a game in over a year. He has been sidelined since suffering an ACL and MCL tear against the Carolina Hurricanes on Nov. 13, 2010. The 32-year-old Russian, who signed a three-year, $17.25 million contract in June, has collected 81 goals and 285 assists in 623 career games.

North Carolina forward Harrison Barnes is expected to play in Wednesday’s game against Wisconsin after spraining his right ankle in Saturday’s upset loss to UNLV in the Las Vegas Invitational. He practiced fully despite leaving Las Vegas on crutches and should be in the starting lineup. Barnes leads the team averaging 17.3 points per game.
