    Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

Presque Isle Downs - Race #3
#4 King of Swords Mild call here, and only if we're getting something in the ballpark of that 4/1 ML offering. I don't fully trust the Ohio form, but that two-back Belterra run looks like it stacks up nicely enough here, and a forward trip should be waiting.
#3 Crimson Red He's another with a forward profile after showing some pace and flattening out late last out, but he might stick around better while facing this softer crew. One of these two.
#2 Miss Moxee Debuter comes in from New York for Linda Rice -- so you get to do the balancing act figuring out what kind of short price you'll accept on a horse who might drill these. I dunno.
Race Summary King of Swords may be playable enough on the board thanks to the questions around the Ohio form and the presence of Miss Moxee. Take a look at that one ahead of this. Surely, she can land this for a capable team, but she's a New York-bred shipping to this cheaper Presque Isle spot when there is plenty of money at home for low-level maidens...
Presque Isle Downs - Race #4
#1 Keepthedreamalive She probably needs something better than she showed in the good score last out, but that was a good-looking first local route. Perfect from two starts here, I think she'll trip out from the fence today.
#3 La Girvina She's looking for her fifth in a row after mostly playing in the claiming and starter ranks this season. Love the recent form, love how reliable she is -- not much to argue with here.
#2 Curlin's Girl Her better stuff keeps her right in the frame with these, but I worry that she's going to give away a tactical edge to the top pair, and neither of them are slouches who will be easy to reel in.
Race Summary Keepthedreamalive has looked very comfortable over the local footing in those last two starts, and I think she gets a perfect trip while right up on the pace.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #8
#7 Sticky Bun She gave way pretty tamely in the debut try, but she was sent long at first asking and has a right to stick around better today. There are one or two other forward players lined up inside of her here, but she draws perfectly to spy and attack. Solid vibe here.
#6 Ocean Rain Dropper fits the profile of a winner in this kind of spot, and I like that she at least showed a touch of interest last out for the first time in awhile. Capable on paper, but I'm not that excited.
#1 Lucy Playa She's quick enough to get in the frame early from the fence, and she is probably going to be a snug fit at this cheap local level.
Race Summary Sticky Bun has some reasonable upside second time out, especially with that route debut under her belt. Think she'll get a perfect run from the outside.

      Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

      Parx - Race #1
#3 GUAIO -- Often in the hunt, surged to win at this level two back at Delaware, changes hands.
#5 ADMIRAL MO -- Ran to fast workouts and won going away off seven-month layoff at Finger Lakes.
#6 VITEMENT -- Held second on clear lead at Churchill, tired as follow-up fave at Ellis Park.
Race Summary GUAIO can be excused as a non-factor in a rapid-paced sprint at a notch above last out. But he was 11/2-4-2 in his previous 11 starts this year, giving the photo-finish camera plenty of work. He will need a top effort but enters a good claim barn and sheds 4 pounds. Bet to win and place and play a 3-5-6 exacta box.
      Parx - Race #2
#2 SKULL HONOR -- Steady check-getter going a route of ground at various venues, Paco returns.
#1 BOTTLES – Five wire-to-wire wins in his last nine starts, but backed-pedaled at this distance.
#4 ENCRYPT – Couldn’t match the ‘bold bid’ of his winning stablemate but was a clear second.
Race Summary SKULL HONOR met several follow-up winners when third in his last two starts and engaged in a ‘spirited stretch run’ for the place spot last out. He earned his top two speed figures in the last two months, gets Paco to ride again and should offer good value. Bet to win and place and play 2-1 and 2-4 exactas.
      Parx - Race #3
#1 STARLORD – $79k earner at Parx gets needed class relief, draws rail, will be running late.
#4 SCUDETTO – Good sprint record at Parx, ran 1-2 for higher tag before poor start in latest.
#2 MYSTIC LUKE – Finished second from on and off the pace in three consecutive starts as the favorite.
Race Summary STARLORD takes a magnified class drop in the weak field. He ran on short rest as the beaten favorite last out and must stay in contact with MYSTIC LUKE. Bet to win and place and play 1-2 and 1-4 exactas.

Race 7 - Maiden Claiming - 6.0f on the Dirt. Purse: $10000 Class Rating: 58

FOR MAIDENS, THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD. THREE YEAR OLDS, 119 LBS.; OLDER, 124 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $7,500. MANITOBA BRED CLAIMING PRICE $11,250.
            RECOMMENDED CHOICES
            # 3 SGT. FILKOW 20/1
            # 6 DO NOT 6/5
            # 9 MO MAMBO 15/1
I have to support SGT. FILKOW in this event and the potential return justifies the dangerous nature of the long odds. This gelding with Bynoe in the saddle makes him a definite contender. The speed rating of 50 from his most recent race looks strong in here. DO NOT - This gelding is a contender based on his earnings per start in dirt sprint races. The speed figure of 56 from his latest race looks very strong in here. MO MAMBO - Should be carefully examined for this event if only for the respectable speed figure earned in the last race. Homer and Pruitt have a very good win percent together.

Race 5 - Maiden Claiming - 350y on the Dirt. Purse: $12800 Class Rating: 59

QUARTER HORSE 350Y, FOR MAIDENS, THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD. THREE YEAR OLDS, 124 LBS.; OLDER, 126 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $10,000.

              # 7 DYNA BEA 3/1
              # 4 SHES FURREL JESSIE 7/2
              # 8 JESS A CHICKS MAN 8/1
I've got to go with DYNA BEA. Has been travelling very well and has among the strongest speed in the race for today's distance. She has been running well and the speed figures are among the best in this group of horses. Has to be given consideration based on the respectable Equibase Speed Figure recorded in the last outing. SHES FURREL JESSIE - This conditioner has the best return on investment in this group with entries racing at this distance and surface. Pedraza should be able to get this filly to break out early for this event.

                Thistledown - Race #1 - Post: 12:50pm - Claiming - 5.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $21,400 Class Rating: 59

                Rating:

                #2 REDDEN (ML=4/1)
                #6 GHOST OF LONDYN (ML=5/2)
                #5 VECCHI (ML=3/1)
                #3 JIM'S RIVER RUNNER (ML=8/1)

REDDEN - A wise man taught me to play the lone speed horse. Take a look at this horse. I think the shorter distance will help this gelding stay the trip. I usually like playing sprint horses who are 3-4 races into a comeback. I really like that last race on August 25th at Thistledown where he ended up third. GHOST OF LONDYN - When this jockey and handler partner up you have to take a look. Batista and Romero have been fantastic together. I usually like playing sprinters who are 3-4 races into a return to racing. VECCHI - Gelding took a little vacation, but has been racing into shape. Radosevich brings him right back. I advise you stick with this hot gelding. This mount picks up a lot of money per race. I believe he can add to that total in this field. JIM'S RIVER RUNNER - Has run good races in the first or second starts back off of a layoff.

Vulnerable Contenders: #7 NATIONAL STORY (ML=9/2),

NATIONAL STORY - This gelding probably needs a more preferred pace situation to make his closing move.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Hal - VECCHI - At Thistledown on August 25th this gelding posted a speed figure of 52 in his last race. He has the top last figure in the field.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Put your money on #2 REDDEN on the nose if you can get odds of 9/2 or more

                  Louisiana Downs - Race #5 - Post: 5:57pm - Claiming - 5.0 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $12,000 Class Rating: 95

                  Rating:

                  #6 CLASSY SOCKS (ML=8/1)
                  #7 HARRY'S ONTHEFLY (ML=7/2)
#3 STAYED IN FOR HALF (ML=5/1)
                  #1 FIT TO FLY (ML=9/2)
                  #9 TREATY (ML=6/1)

CLASSY SOCKS - This animal has recorded the best recent turf Equibase speed fig at the distance and surface. Gelding won his last race here on July 28th as a shipper. I think he looks like a winner once again. This gelding's last speed rating notched on July 28th is number one in last race speed ratings. This gelding has lots of ability on the grass. Could be long gone by the time they hit the top of the lane. HARRY'S ONTHEFLY - When this jock and trainer are put together you have to take a look. Castillo and Wong have been fantastic together. This gelding should be in tip-top shape, this far into his form cycle. Earnings per start is something that I feel can be an important handicapping aspect. This thoroughbred is ranked at the top of the list in this field. STAYED IN FOR HALF - Jacks brings him back again. I advise you stay with this strong gelding. The ROI when Vargas and Jacks hook up is outstanding. I think that a sprinter coming off a layoff will usually run his best in the 3rd or 4th start back. FIT TO FLY - This horse is in nice condition, having run a nice race on August 29th, finishing third. I think this horse is ready to run a good one. He's had enough races since the layoff and should be fit. TREATY - This jock/conditioner duo has been producing a very lucrative ROI, right at +121. He must like the track here. Shipped in to finish first on August 26th and he looks tough once again. This gelding recorded a good speed figure of 92 in his last event. That speed rating should be high enough to win this time.

                  Vulnerable Contenders: #2 DON'TASK DON'TTELL (ML=9/2), #4 ONLY A DREAM (ML=8/1),

DON'TASK DON'TTELL - Generally I need a sprinter to have some recent good showings in short distance contests in order to play him. ONLY A DREAM - A strong animal that's been running well, but he's been off the track in the mornings of late. Common speed figure last time around the track at Louisiana Downs at 5 furlongs. Don't believe this less than sharp equine will improve too much in today's race.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Putting our cash on #6 CLASSY SOCKS to win. Have to have odds of at least 6/1 or better though
                  EXACTA WAGERS: Box [3,6]
TRIFECTA WAGERS: [3,6,7] with [1,3,6,7,9] with [1,3,6,7,9] Total Cost: $36
                  SUPERFECTA WAGERS: [6,7] with [3,6,7] with [1,3,6,7,9] with [1,3,6,7,9] Total Cost: $24
