Opening Weekend at Santa Anita Park has been a fun one and there is still one day of high-quality racing left for horseplayers to attack. Sunday’s 10-race card kicks off at 4 PM ET /1 PM PT, features a pair of graded stakes races, and includes a carryover of over $47k in the new Sunset Pick 6. In case you missed it, this bet is retail only, has a $1 minimum, and includes the last three races at Gulfstream Park and Santa Anita. Here are a trio of horses I will be leaning on over the back half of the card. Let’s close the week strong!


Race 6:

This state-bred MSW for 2YOs at 6-furlongs over the grass kicks off the late Pick 5 and appears relatively wide open. #8 Eye of the Smiley took a lot of money on debut at Del Mar back on September 1 for trainer Brian Koriner. The $20k 2024 purchase was beaten out of his inside draw, but was able to find a comfortable prominent spot along the rail just off the early pacesetters. The son of Smiling Tiger was no match for impressive wire-to-wire winner Wiki Kane, but was easily second best. The move to an outside draw and racing experience under his belt should lead to significant improvement from a colt who ran well on debut and should find himself in another good early spot on the stretch out.

Race 8:

This state-bred optional claimer at two-turns over the lawn not only offers up my next play, but is the first of three races included in this afternoon’s Sunset Pick 6 wager where I like #6 Lady Mendelssohn. The Out of the Blue Stables filly debuted in three consecutive races over the grass, including her maiden breaker over this course and distance back on January 23. Trainer Carla Gaines gave her one try versus winners on the grass before moving her filly to the main track to try to take advantage of a pair of Cal-bred stakes. She ran third in both, won an allowance over the dirt at Del Mar on dirt, and now returns to the lawn. The Mendelssohn filly ran faster over the main track than in her turf races, but that hopefully has a lot more to do with natural progression than a preference for that surface. She is bred for the grass and meets a field she should handle with Umberto Rispoli back in the saddle.

Race 10:

Opening weekend at the Great Race Place concludes with an extremely competitive one-mile first-level allowance over the Santa Anita sod where I like #6 Miss Artois. The Pamela Ziebarth homebred made two starts in Kentucky for Michael McCarthy before moving to the Richard Baltas barn earlier this year. Baltas moved the Mucho Macho Man filly to the grass where she immediately moved forward with a third-place effort over this course and distance. She did not have things her way at all when caught three-wide much of the way at Del Mar on July 18, but rebounded with a win as the public choice in mid-August. Baltas legs up jockey Juan Hernandez on a filly that appears to be getting better and should get a favorable voyage in her first start versus winners.

Northfield Park has a 15-race card to begin the week. The $1.00 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 11. The sequence has a $10,000 guaranteed pool with a 14% takeout, and it will be my focus. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 11 (9:40 PM EDT)

5-Back In My Day (7/2)-Took back at the start last week, had to race wide and did rally but couldn't get close to the winner. This time Night Hawk, who was the well-meant winner starts from the 8-hole. This race could set-up more favorably for Kurt Sugg to get invloved when the wings fold.
6-Cocosdream A (5-1)-Came 2nd in the same race as the one above. Looked full of pace but couldn't seal the deal rolling down the passing lane. Lost by neck, but this time Chris Lems could take advantage of some quick fractions and come off cover to roll by.

Race 12 (10:02 PM EDT)

4-Winter Soldier (3-1)-Has won 2 of 3 since arriving from M1 and now faces Open Handicap company. This will be a bigger test and Ronnie Wrenn takes over for AMac. It's best to respect the recent purchase by the Stable.ca might be up to the challenge.
7-Emerald's Legacy (5/2)-Aaron Merriman will look to get on the point and may have to compete with the one above early on. Has been in the hunt at Nfld hitting the board in 7 of 11 but has taken only 1 picture. Meadows shipper comes off an Open company win and should be a player here.

Race 13 (10:24 PM EDT)

2-Downbythedanceclub (5/2)-Went gate to wire 2 back and then stepped up and tried the same plan. The last race was in the slop and did fade down the lane. Moves in a few slots, could return to winning ways and the price should be better than 1/2.

Race 14 (10:46 PM EDT)

1-Do Mischief (5/2)-Has been in sharp form since joining the Brandon Presto barn, finishing 2nd, and winning in last. Now draws inside, so Wrenn should be no worse than in the pocket and this post draw could be the winning difference.
2-Alta Engen A (3-1)-Dan Noble takes the lines, and this veteran likes to race on the point. The pedal will be down and could be difficult to tackle if gets the top and steals a quarter.
9-Ideal Funding N (5-1)-The 7-year-old fits, needs a trip to get the job down and could be overlooked. The two above should be out and rolling and Kurt Sugg might be able to find a way to stay close to the leaders. If so, could be right there at the wire if in striking range at the top of the lane.

Santa Anita Park - Race #1

#9 Naturally Blonde	She might be a mildly playable price on the board today with the others listed below likely to take a bit of cash, too. She's had her chances, but she's pretty honest and typically shows up with an effort that keeps her in the mix with these.
#8 Della Terra	Wouldn't argue that hard with anyone landing here, as she has already turned in a couple nice efforts and took to the turf well last time out. The one to beat.
#1 Tiger of the Sea	Thought about this one on top in here and would want her on the tickets, but get a look at her on the track ahead of this. She's bringing some forward works to this long layoff run, but her debut here last year was solid enough.
Race Summary	Naturally Blonde has been in the frame with similar in the past and should get an OK tracking run today. Della Terra hits hard at a short price, too.

Santa Anita Park - Race #8

#5 Yellow Card	He has faced some tough customers along the way and did what he was supposed to do in that last one at Del Mar. He was only a length out of a Grade I win at Kentucky Downs last year, so there's a touch of class here, too.
#4 Sorrento Sky	He was in the picture last out in a close finish in the Green Flash, and he might find another decent tracking trip today. Seems like he's there if he brings his A-game.
#1 Reef Runner	Big effort from him last time out, and something similar would probably do the trick with this crew. Still, think there are a handful of competitive types lined up today and would want to look around a bit.
Race Summary	Yellow Card and Sorrento Sky look most appealing here to me, and they should find similar types of trips while not too far out of it.

Santa Anita Park - Race #10

#9 Eiffel	She has been well regarded since that sharp debut score here, and the cutback to this downhill sprint could be right up her alley.
#8 Favor to You	I thought pretty highly of her after her efforts here this spring, but I wanted to see just a bit better from her in the last couple in Kentucky. Could wake up now that she's back at home.
#1 Warming	She turns back after a couple of mild efforts with better crews, having run into Nitrogen, Fionn and May Day Ready in her last two starts. Think this spot suits her well while finding an easier group.
Race Summary	Eiffel looks interesting while getting a shorter trip today, and she should find herself in a really nice spot early on over this course.

Laurel Park - Race #2

#6 TUFF LUCK –	Returns to scene of runaway victory at this distance for the same connections.
#1 KEY STAT –	Farrior class-dropper ran first or second in 9 of last 10 starts, most as the favorite.
#7 DEADPAN –	Ran 1-2-3 in main track route races from his first four starts this year.
Race Summary	TUFF LUCK faded in a slow-paced allowance for Maryland breds around three turns at Timonium, but he won by 10-1/2 lengths the last time he traveled this distance at Laurel Park the last time he won in May. He gets in as the co-lightweight in the field and gets the nod for a win and place bet. Also play a 1-6-7 exacta box.

Laurel Park - Race #3

#6 QUEEN KHALEESI –	Rallied wide for share twice at this level, ran into trouble in MSW ranks last out.
#5 FEATHER WISH –	Loomed boldly on final turn, took aim at 27-1 winner but drifted in deep stretch.
#8 NOBODY’S GIRL –	Backed up on soft turn in MSW ranks, recent :48.1 workout encouraging.
Race Summary	Looks like a mid-50 Beyer speed figure could win this maiden turf route, but there are many candidates to do so. QUEEN KHALESI gets the nod after a wide, last-to-third rally two starts back at this level and a troubled MSW run for her new barn last out. Bet to win and place and play a 5, 6/1, 5, 6, 8/ALL trifecta.

Laurel Park - Race #5

#7 BIRRAVINO BLVD –	In top form, ran second off similar rest, gets class relief.
#8 BLUE MARBLE –	Monmouth invader rallied into slow pace and photo finish, worked in :35-2/5 since.
#5 FABELMAN –	Fired blank in latest but was steady check-getter before that.
Race Summary	BIRRAVINO BLVD ran second from on and off the pace in his last two starts and takes a magnified class drop in this field. He returns off a similar two-month rest before his last go-round at Penn National. Bet to win and place and play 7-5 and 7-8 exactas.

I think RELENTLESS WINE is a decent choice. Recent figs for the rider - 22 win percent - make this colt stand out in this group. Ought to come out solid - I have liked the way this colt has moved promptly to the front end recently. His 64 average has this colt with among the most respectable Equibase Speed Figures for this event. AMARILLO KISSER - This animal has some longshot handicapping angles going for him. With a nice Equibase class figure average of 86, has one of the best class advantages in this field. FLEETING HEART - Has been racing soundly and has among the best speed in the race for today's distance. It's a good sign that Keener is using Cruz on this entrant.

This filly has posted some nice finishing positions in her last few efforts. Should be given consideration based on the respectable Equibase Speed Fig posted in the last race. THE DOVE RULES - Ran a strong last race. With one of the top jock in terms of returns at the window, don't count this filly out. LOVE ACTUALLY - She has earned respectable figures under today's conditions and should fare well against this group. This filly has a strong win percent in turf sprint races.

FOURTH AND ONE - In the last race on August 27th was a good tune-up for today. Got respectable betting action in that one, but finished second. Expect better in this race. The 77 recent race speed fig looks sound in the TrackMaster PPs. BRAVARO - Davis and Joseph perform well when they team up. It's hard to beat a +135 ROI for a jock and conditioner.

Vulnerable Contenders: #1 COMBAT MISSION (ML=5/1), #10 THE TOY CANNON (ML=6/1), #5 POWER SPEED (ML=6/1),

COMBAT MISSION - Don't believe this vulnerable equine will make an impact in today's race. That last speed figure was common when compared with today's Equibase class figure. THE TOY CANNON - Trying to beat this one this time around at the reward of 6/1. POWER SPEED - This entrant didn't go to the front end and didn't close ground down the lane last time he ran. Earned a mediocre speed fig in the last race in a Maiden Special race on August 29th. Not probable to see an improved performance off of that number.

Mountaineer Park - Race #1 - Post: 7:00pm - Maiden Special - 5.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $17,000 Class Rating: 42

CELESTIAL HARMONY - Pagan should be able to place this filly right behind the leaders. Ideally, Pagan will rate behind the leaders, then surge on the turn. Taking a trip to a lower level; has the ability to make her presence felt. Pagan and Torres getting together are a horse gambler's friend. Torres gets a break on this racer carrying 8 pounds less than last out. Certainly could make the difference in this race. TIJUANA BUNNY - A thoroughbred coming back this promptly after a nice outing is a good signal. Looking at today's class rating, this thoroughbred is meeting an easier field than last time around the track at Mountaineer Park. Ran against the males in her last race on September 15th. This horse earns a lot of dough per start. I believe she can augment the lifetime total right here. LADY VIRAGO - A winning percentage the likes of what Parker and Stephen have achieved together is tremendous. The September 6th race at Belterra Park was at a class level of (53). Dropping down the class scale significantly, so she should be in a good spot. I think this filly is ready to run a good one. She's had enough efforts since the vacation and should be fit.

Vulnerable Contenders: #4 ZENA CAT (ML=7/2), #6 ESTRELLA SILVER (ML=9/2),

ZENA CAT - 7/2 is not enough of a price to take on this horse. ESTRELLA SILVER - Would have to get better off that third place finish last time out to make an impact here. When checking today's class rating, she will have to earn a better rating than in the last race to be competitive in this dirt sprint.

2^nd race [Clm 20000, 7F] – (1) Whistler’s Style (A) rallied from last to second on two weeks rest, got claimed back from Wayne Potts by Linda Rice. (7) Echo in Eternity (A) stumbled at the break and finished second by a neck after a stretch duel. (8) Problematica ran in three starter allowances at Saratoga and had an easy front-end victory last month. (2) Brzina was claimed from her last three starts including the last time that she raced in May and was in front the whole race for a $20,000 tag.
3^rd race [OC 50k/N1X, 1 1/8 mi] – (5) Fully Subscribed (C) was bet down from 5-1 to 3-1 following a year layoff, had the lead, and finished third.
