Pittsburgh Penguins at Carolina Hurricanes (140, 5.5)

The Hurricanes have a new coach, Kirk Muller, but that hasn’t stopped the defensive breakdowns plaguing this team.

Two more breakdowns led to a pair of Rangers’ goals in a 5-3 home loss to New York on Thursday.

"We've only just had the one practice," Muller said afterward. "It's got to take a little time. They're trying. There's a couple little situations where there was a little confusion, and then there's the other part, where you just can't get beat one-on-one."

Now they must face Sidney Crosby and the Pens, who fired 35 shots in a 2-1 win at Washington on Thursday.

Crosby was held without a point for the second time in six games since returning from a 61-game absence because of a concussion. He has 11 points in his other four games, and figures to get untracked against Carolina.

In Carolina’s last 10 games against winning teams, the over is 7-2-1.

Florida Panthers at San Jose Sharks (-175, 5.5)

The Panthers arrived in San Jose off their seventh straight loss to Los Angeles. They failed on all six power-play chances in losing 2-1 to the Kings.

Florida has scored a total of five goals in the first three games of this four-game trip.

The Sharks also aren’t lighting up the scoreboard, having tallied a total of six goals in regulation over their last four games.

The under is 5-1 in San Jose’s last six games, 4-1 in Florida’s last five games, and an impressive 39-12-5 in Carolina’s last 56 tilts against Western Conference opponents.

Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets at Tulane Green Wave (-1, 121)

Tulane (8-0) is off to its best start since the 1991-92 team started 13-0.

The Green Wave is doing it with defense, holding opponents to 51.6 points (5th nationally) and 36.2 percent shooting (22nd).

Junior guard Kendall Timmons, a preseason All-Conference USA selection, leads a balanced attack and is coming off a 21-point effort in Tulane’s 78-53 win over Southern.

Georgia Tech (4-3) presents the biggest test yet for Tulane. The Yellow Jackets are playing hard for new coach Brian Gregory, but offensively they’re limited, with only swingman Glen Rice Jr. able to create his own shot.

The Jackets were just dismantled 76-60 by Northwestern on Tuesday in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. They scored 21 points in the second half against a team not known for defense.

In addition, Tech will be without backup point guard Pierre Jordan, who had a surgical procedure on Thursday.

West Virginia Mountaineers at No. 24 Mississippi State Bulldogs (-3.5, 136)

Senior forward Kevin Jones has been dominant so far, averaging 21 points and 12.2 rebounds for the 4-1 Mountaineers. He’s shooting nearly 60 percent from the field and has nailed six 3-pointers, tied for the team lead.

Coach Bob Huggins even compared Jones to some of the celebrated big men he’s coached throughout the years, including Kenyon Martin and Danny Fortson.

“He’s, I think, more versatile than a lot of those guys were,” Huggins said. “Those guys were primarily paint guys. Obviously, there was only one Kenyon athletically, but [Jones] can step out and make shots a little bit better, but he’s probably not quite as good around the rim as some of them were.”

The 6-8, 260-pound Jones, however, will have his hands full against the Bulldogs’ big men, 6-11 Arnett Moultrie and 6-10 Renardo Sidney.

Mississippi State (7-1) has won six straight since a 68-58 loss to Akron.

While the Mountaineers will be playing their first road game, the Bulldogs own impressive neutral-site victories over Arizona and Texas A&M.

These Bulldogs have a lot more chemistry than last year’s dysfunctional bunch.
