Johnny Burke: All My Bets | Happy Valley | October 8, 2025

    October 7, 2025 | By Johnny Burke

We’re back to Happy Valley after back-to-back cards at Sha Tin! With nine races on the day, your morning can get off to a great start if I can put together a few winning tickets. I like a few clear-cut choices and one particular longshot you need to be aware of late in the day. Let’s take a look at the card and dig up a few winners to pad the week’s bankroll.

    Helpful Resources

    Happy Valley – October 8
HKJC Resource Page – Free PPs, Pace Projections, Workout Videos, Weather https://racing.hkjc.com/racing/infor...se=ST&RaceNo=1

    Race 2 | 1650M | Class 4

    Exacta Key Box – 1 w/ 3,12
    Grade: A

Notes: QUANTAM PATCH is the highest rated horse in this field and deserving of the 2/1 Morning Line. Given the short price, and the likelihood that more money will come in on this gelding, I like turning to the Exacta to try to find a decent price and capitalize on the opinion. AMAZING AWARD was in great form before the break in the racing season, and has shown positive patterns on this course, in particular. His ratings in my model put him in the second tier of the field alongside ATOMIC BEAUTY who also has a near-win going this distance over the “C+3” course at Happy Valley. Given the potential changes and growth for each runner in the offseason, I am going to play this as an Exacta Key Box and root for an upset.

    Race 5 | 1000M | Class 4

    Quinella – 7 w/ 1,4
    Grade: B

Notes: I’m going to take a bit of a different approach in this race. Often, five-furlong races in Hong Kong are raced in a straight dash from gate to wire with no turns. On this card, they’re running the “C+3” course which means this 1000 Meter race is going to have a turn in it. Do I think it completely overhauls all the performances run on other courses? Of course not. However, HAPPY UNITED has run on this course somewhat recently and finished a length and a half behind in a similar contest. He’s carrying seven pounds less in this attempt at the same course, and I think his pressing style will play well with an outer post and a turn to play off. I’ll play him with two of the more highly rated horses in the field in the Quinella and hope his 13/1 Morning Line stays with us until the tote closes.

    Race 6 | 1650M | Class 3

    Win - #1 EMBRACES
    Exacta Box – 1 w/ 4
    Grade: B

Notes: Top choice, EMBRACES, had his season tune-up on September 10th dropping down to Class 3 and just ran out of track. They’re going to take three turns this time around, and I like this stalking horse to conserve energy early while the field battles it out over each turn before opening up a lane for this gelding to dash home. Near the front of the field, I think PRESTIGE GOOD should be able to press through the Happy Valley course, as he as shown more than enough ability to do at a mile or longer. I expect these two to emerge from this field with two different styles to upset this field that doesn’t seem to have a clear-cut standout. EMBRACES has been tabbed with a 7/1 Morning Line, and if I can hold onto that price, I think this race could be a serious day-maker.

    Race 8 | 1200M | Class 3

    Win - #5 SOVEREIGN FUND
    Exacta Box – 1 w/ 5
    Grade: A

Notes: If there is one race on the card that I think is primed for a massive price, it’s this one. SOVEREIGN FUND is firmly at the top of my model’s ratings, but is coming into the race with a 21/1 Morning Line. WINGS OF WAR shows up as second-best to my top choice, and he sports a 16/1 Morning Line. SOVEREIGN FUND was in great form rounding out last season, and was held up to coast home in his season debut after running a length off the lead through two calls. He seems to be healthy as they run him back four weeks later, and I think if he looks anything like he did last season, he should be able to clear this field and get home in a way that makes the local oddsmakers question their process. WINGS OF WAR is never more than a length or two away from a victory and his raw figures rate very highly related to this field. I’m willing to box these two in the Exacta since both have a price worthy of chasing, but SOVEREIGN FUND is my upset pick for the day.

      Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

Presque Isle Downs - Race #6
#6 Jimmy the Hat Think he may have enough excuses out of that last one to give him another look today, as he's got some finishing ability in a race with a few forward players who can't all stay.
#1 Beta Local footing is a question mark, and he's going to need to bounce back off a flat run last time out, but the previous form was decent enough and suggests he could find a dreamy spot on the inside just in behind the pace.
#4 Artempus He's in decent form and has some solid local lines to his name in a race where that's at a bit of a premium. One of the ones again today after the easy roll at 2/5 last out.
Race Summary Jimmy the Hat meets a few forward players who have enough committed pace to keep things honest, and he figures to bring something better this time around -- his form doesn't typically stay sour for long.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #7
#4 Lady Frost Not a ton of confirmed front-end pace in this one, and she could find herself on the engine again today after looking good turning away challengers in her local debut last out. Think she's going to win right back.
#3 Naughty Favors Grade II dropper obviously fits better here and wouldn't surprise, but she finished too late at 8/5 with similar a couple starts back and is likely to take some cash again.
#6 Chris's Kitty Wouldn't argue too hard with anyone landing here, as it looks like she'll find a pretty sweet spying spot from out here while stepping up. Class is the question, but her local form is pretty tough to argue with.
Race Summary Lady Frost might get a really good run of things near the top in a race without much confirmed speed, and I didn't find a whole lot to pick at in that score here last month.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #8
#5 Dominator C. Was looking around for a bit better price to come along late, but I think the race flow flatters this guy enough to think it's graduation day. He's the best potential finisher in the group, even if it's hard to hang your hat on him with a ton of confidence at this point.
#8 Library He finished in front of the top choice last out and also has some ability to get past horses, and his last few suggest he's holding some of the better form of his career.
#1 Vernor's Junction Stretchout player has enough pace to find the front from the fence here, and I think he'll prove best of the early speed while meeting a couple other forward players. Don't really trust him to see this out, but I feel like there's a scenario in which he shakes off the other pace and holds a mild finishing group.
Race Summary Dominator C. and Library look like the right pair in a spot where I want something from a bit off the pace.

        Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

        Delaware Park - Race #2
#4 HIPATIA (4-1) New Jersey invader’s last two one mile runs on main track good enough to win this.
#3 CHARLIZE CHUB (15-1) Can make good use of her speed on the stretch-out with blinkers added.
#5 PADRINO’S GOLD (2-1) Beaten favorite in last pair, stretches back out, changes riders.
Race Summary HIPATIA looms a decent value play at 4-1 on the morning line despite a 1-for-24 record. She finished third in her last two dirt routes with 50-plus Beyer speed figures, both good enough to win here. She stumbled at the start in a race won by Crossati, who went wire-to-wire next out to improve to 3-for-10. Bet to win and place and play a 50-cent Pick 3 for $9, using numbers 3, 4/2, 4, 5/9, 10, 13.
        Delaware Park - Race #3
#2 TITLE TRACK (9-2) Debuts at age 4, tries to follow the footsteps of his dam for Godolphin LLC.
#4 NEVER TILL NOW (6-1) Piling up the checks, starts fresh, gets in light-weighted.
#5 MYSTICAL MERLIN (3-2) Dueled, just missed in pair of photo finishes, one to beat.
Race Summary TITLE TRACK shows three bullet workouts from a three-month series of preps for his debut at age 4. He hails from an 18-percent first-out barn and his dam, Music Note (7-12, $1.6 million), was a five-time Grade 1 winner for the same owner. Bet to win and place and play a 2/4, 5/ALL trifecta.
        Delaware Park - Race #4
#13 SAM STORMY (8-1) Tempting price and ideal set-up offset outside post draw.
#10 BODECREAM (5-2) Beat suspect field to three-peat but did it with ease.
#9 OSKAR MARTINEZ (5-1) Versatile, six-figure grass earner exits allowance ranks.
Race Summary SAM STORMY rallied for two wins and two seconds in his last four turf races and will have plenty of pace to rally into in a bid to overcome the outside post. He finished first or second in 7 of 19 starts on the lawn and is well worth a win and place bet at 8-1 on the morning line. Also play a 9-10-13 exacta box.

Race 2 - Speed Index Race - 250y on the Dirt. Purse: $8500 Class Rating: 65

QUARTER HORSE 250Y, FOR THREE YEAR OLDS AND UPWARD WITH AN AVERAGE SPEED INDEX OF 75 AND UNDER OR WITH A SPEED INDEX THAT HAS NEVER BEEN BETTER THAN 80.
              RECOMMENDED CHOICES

              # 4 BAR EF RUSHFURRCANDY 10/1
              # 5 GIN XPRESS 5/1
I think FAVORITE INTEREST is a very good choice. Put up a solid speed figure last time out. Has a very strong shot in this event if you like back class. Is worth careful consideration and may be a wager - strong speed figures (63 average) at today's distance and surface recently. BAR EF RUSHFURRCANDY - Will more than likely be one of the early speedsters of the group going into the midpoint of the contest. Must be given a shot based on the very strong Equibase speed fig recorded in the last contest. GIN XPRESS - This animal enters today's contest on Lasix. The speed rating of 54 from her most recent affair looks respectable in here.

                Charles Town - Race #1 - Post: 7:00pm - Maiden Claiming - 6.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $12,400 Class Rating: 52

                Rating:

                #5 EFFERVESCENT (ML=5/2)

EFFERVESCENT - I think Farrior is making a good move here. This mare can only be aided by the shorter trip. My friends and I have made cash playing thoroughbreds with this type of early speed. Follow my advice and do the same. Barbosa comes to ride after getting to know the mare in the last race. Was in a $5,000 Maiden Claiming race at Charles Town last out. That affair had a class figure of 62 and she is moving down right here in this race. A certain contender. Earnings per start is something that I believe can be an extremely key factor. This horse is ranked at the very top in this field.

Vulnerable Contenders: #3 SHE GOT THE MUNNI (ML=9/5), #1 NEW YORK LIGHTS (ML=3/1), #4 ALWAYS TO THE END (ML=7/2),

SHE GOT THE MUNNI - This mare hasn't had any recent accomplishments in sprint contests. Not easy to bet on her in this contest. NEW YORK LIGHTS - A bit of a less than stellar effort when this filly finished fifth. ALWAYS TO THE END - This filly is always around, but just doesn't finish first. Difficult to wager on her on the front end. Won't be easy for this mount to beat this group off of that last speed fig. Not likely to improve enough to run a figure anywhere near today's class rating, so put her on the questionable challengers list.

GUEST COMMENTARY: The Brain - EFFERVESCENT - After a layoff, has had a few races and today she enters a sprint race. Should be back in form, so I expect this horse to perform well in today's race.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Go with #5 EFFERVESCENT on top if we're getting at least 1/1 odds
                EXACTA WAGERS: 5 with [1,2]

                  # 6 I FEELUCKY TONITE 9/2
CUPID'S DUDE looks decent to best this field. Have to examine solely on class, with some of the best class figs of this field. Is a solid contender based on numbers put up lately under today's conditions. Leon has recent return on investment numbers which make this entrant a good bet. GROUP TICKET - Should compete well in the early pace clash which bodes well with this group. Could best this group of horses in this race based on the speed figure - 92 - of his last contest. I FEELUCKY TONITE - He ought to be given consideration given the very good speed numbers. Will probably go to the front end and could never look back.

                    Keeneland - Race #2 - Post: 1:32pm - Maiden Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $55,000 Class Rating: 75

                    Rating:

                    #8 NORTHERN VOYAGE (ML=7/2)
                    #2 CLOUD NUMBER NINE (ML=15/1)
                    #5 VOLATILE NITE (ML=6/1)

NORTHERN VOYAGE - Faced tougher last out at Ellis Park. Based on class ratings, this is a weaker bunch, so I will put this thoroughbred on my list of contenders in this race. I sense a speed duel developing here. If that happens, this filly will be in the 'garden' spot to rumble by the leaders. Eurton adds Lasix for the second time today. Should make the difference right here in this race. CLOUD NUMBER NINE - Ran a lackluster race at Churchill Downs last time around the track. Racing on a fast track puts this filly at the top of my contenders list. VOLATILE NITE - Can't help but like the 2nd time addition of Lasix by the trainer today. That's a good sign Asmussen thinks she can win. This thoroughbred could be tough today, especially since Asmussen rode last race out and now should be better acquainted with this one. Have to forget about that last grass race. This filly should do better hitting the dirt right here.

                    Vulnerable Contenders: #7 DIDN'T IT RAIN (ML=8/5), #1 PURPLE AND GOLD (ML=8/1),

DIDN'T IT RAIN - I'd like to see more conducive recent outings with morning line odds of 8/5. I find it hard to play this pony in today's event. Make her show you something in a sprint race before you bet on her in a race of 6 furlongs. PURPLE AND GOLD - Hasn't been getting close at all of late.

GUEST COMMENTARY: The Brain - CLOUD NUMBER NINE - Be careful of this filly. Williamson gives her Lasix for the second straight time. My massive database says this animal should perform well today.
