Al Cimaglia: Northfield Park Late Pick 4 Analysis

    October 12, 2025 | By Al Cimaglia

    XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Northfield Park begins the week with a 15-race card. The $1.00 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 11. The sequence has a $10,000 guaranteed pool, and it will be my focus. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 11 (9:40 PM EDT)

3-Sage Ivy (3-1)-Old timer gets some needed post relief and also drops to a more comfortable level. Gets a positive driver change in Aaron Merriman and he will be aggressive. If the Cory Kreiser trainee is dialed on high, he could be in control of this affair from start to finish.
9-Hill Of A Night (2-1)-The Renae Looney entry will likely be bet down as it faces easier. Dan Noble sticks and if he gets through the opening turn in good shape, this is a beatable field.

    Race 12 (10:02 PM EDT)

4-Sea Rose (7/2)-The field is full of horses who don't like to win but this 12-year-old still competes. Did win back on 8-20 and that was the last time in versus this kind. Merriman gets the nod, and he will be rolling hard off the car. This pilot has 2 wins in 5 drives for the Shane Webb Barn and will look for a big try.

    Race 13 (10:24 PM EDT)

4-Bullvillespandemic (8-1)-Willing to toss last, took the long way around and the trip took its toll. But has the gate speed to get the top, or land close to it and recent form has been good.
5-Greatest Ending (4-1)-Bumps up a couple of levels after wiring the field on 10-3. AMac should be out and rolling and should be joining #4 at the top of the stack. Will respect chances to offer a square price in a scattered field.
6-Silver Bentley (5-1)-Takes a good drop and lands in at a competitive level. Might be overlooked and this race could set-up for a closer. This is a spot to take an overdue picture.

    Race 14 (10:46 PM EDT)

2-Blueberry Crush (7/2)-Likes an inside post draw and does good work racing near the top. Both could happen as Aaron Merriman is at the controls. Has won 3 of 7 starts at Nfld and has a pilot who will have in position to add to that total.
4-Just A Pleasure (5-1)-This will be the 2nd start on Lasix and was too far back at the half last time to make a difference. Won at this level on 8-31 with Chris Lems steering. That pilot will be between the pipes here and should have the Tessa Lems trainee racing near the top off the car. Might be overlooked and could pop at a price with an efficient trip.

    $2 Late Pick 4

    3,9/4/4,5,6/2,4
    Total Bet=$24

      Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

Santa Anita Park - Race #2
#7 Ridegold Don't love the likely price, but I really think she's supposed to handle this crew, as she holds a tactical edge on most of these and might be finding a bit softer spot today.
#2 Turkey Bird Price could be interesting for the gimmicks with a short number on top. She's got a touch of positional pace that she hasn't often shown on the turf, and I'm hoping a mild race flow today will allow her to sit close early and grind late for a piece.
#10 French Moonlight She makes sense after a couple of useful runs with similar in the last couple starts, and she's probably tactical enough to avoid having to finish from way downtown to reel in the top choice. Wouldn't argue too hard with you, but that's also how I felt heading into her last two. Underneath?
Race Summary Ridegold seems tough with this crew if she can bring one of her better tries, and I'm hoping Turkey Bird can make some noise and get in the frame with one of the logical players today.
Santa Anita Park - Race #6
#5 Afternoon Nap The turf form here is pretty honest, and he has some reasonable upside in this second start back off the bench. Think he's one of the ones in a fun race.
#7 Shamrock Glitter Reliable overseas form seems to make him a player on paper here, and he was in the picture with Legend of Time at Meydan earlier this year, and that guy has turned out to be a pretty honest Grade I/II type in the States. Must be on the tickets.
#4 Arrakis Wouldn't be a shock to see him land this one after really turning his form around on the turf in those last three starts. Versatile tracking pace should find a good spot.
Race Summary Afternoon Nap and Shamrock Glitter are the two most interesting in this spot, but I think you can make a pretty honest case for most of them, so trust your gut.
Santa Anita Park - Race #10
#12 Track Tiger He needs a scratch to draw in, but I like the way he moved forward last time out and think he'll be in line for a great attacking trip from the outside post. Think he might be the right one if he goes.
#11 Kilmer Take a look at him on the tote and track ahead of this -- he's bred for the trip and seems to be working forwardly enough to take a glance before locking in on this race. Price player?
#6 Cactus Charlie He might drill these while moving to the turf for the first time with a couple solid dirt starts to his name, but the price is likely to be on the short side, and he has been just a touch flat in the final yards of his first couple races. Logical player doesn't generate a lot of enthusiasm for me.
Race Summary Track Tiger has a lot of appeal for me on the move to the turf if he is able to find a spot in the gate. If he doesn't run, I'd look to Kilmer as a potential spoiler out of the box in a race where I just don't totally trust Cactus Charlie.

            # 1 POCKET VENUS 3/2
            # 2 DIVA CAT 3/1
A TOAST TO LANIE has a decent shot to take this race. She looks quite good in this spot and I expect will be on the lead or close at the midpoint. With a nice Equibase class rating average of 86, has one of the strongest class advantages in this group. Mullins has one of the strongest winning percentages in this field with entries running at this distance and surface. POCKET VENUS - Has run strongly when running a dirt sprint race. Must be given a shot here on the basis of the numbers in the speed department alone. DIVA CAT - This filly obviously likes the distance, going 1 out of 1 in her races recently. Earnings per start at the distance/surface is a good angle. This entrant ranks at the top in this field.

              # 3 CHATTER UP 2/1
              # 2 WEST COAST HARBOR 5/1
ARIZONA LINDY has a formidable shot to take this race. Has run very well when travelling a dirt sprint race. She has been running soundly and the speed figures are among the strongest in this group. Should be carefully examined - I like the figures from the last contest. CHATTER UP - Could best this field based on the Equibase Speed Figure - 67 - of her last affair. As of late Mead has provided players with a solid winning percentage with horses moving in dirt sprint races. WEST COAST HARBOR - This filly must be carefully examined just off the earnings per start in dirt sprint events alone. Don't let this filly slip past you. Could win at big odds.

                Santa Anita - Race #1 - Post: 1:00pm - Stakes - 6.5 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $100,000 Class Rating: 102 California Distaff H.

                Rating:

                #4 SNEAKER (ML=9/2)
                #3 BIT'S TIGER MAGIC (ML=3/2)
                #5 MOMENT'S PLEASURE (ML=6/1)

SNEAKER - I have to like this filly's chances to win at the shorter distance. Multiple trips to the winner's circle over the surface right here at Santa Anita. Maybe, another trip to the winner's circle right here in this race. BIT'S TIGER MAGIC - Miller moves this horse here to Santa Anita from Del Mar. Looking at the horse's recent PP lines, she has shown the ability to win at multiple race tracks. Miller gets a break on this thoroughbred carrying 5 pounds less than last out. Its possible this could make the difference in this race. MOMENT'S PLEASURE - When Kimura and Lewis join forces on horses the ROI has been wonderful at +39. In my opinion, you need 'class' to be successful on the grass. This one has the highest average class figure in the bunch.

Vulnerable Contenders: #1 GRAND SLAM SMILE (ML=6/5),

GRAND SLAM SMILE - This filly hasn't had any positive efforts in short distance affairs in the last couple months.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - BIT'S TIGER MAGIC - This race horse is a gem of consistency. Check out her running lines. Worth a prime investment today.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: #4 SNEAKER is the play if we get odds of 4/1 or better

                  Gulfstream Park - Race #4 - Post: 2:21pm - Maiden Claiming - 8.3 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $29,000 Class Rating: 59

                  Rating:

                  #10 CADENCED (ML=3/1)
                  #6 TACITAP (ML=8/1)

CADENCED - The Sep 26th affair at Gulfstream Park was at a class level of (64). Dropping down in class ranks a significant amount, so he should be in a good spot. This gelding's last speed rating registered on Sep 26th is at the top in last race Equibase speed figs. TACITAP - The morning line odds on this gelding are higher than those of the other entrant from the shedrow of conditioner Barboza. Often the longer-priced part of a 'split' entry wins. Looking at today's class figure, this campaigner is meeting an easier field than last out at Gulfstream Park.

                  Vulnerable Contenders: #7 TECHNO MUSIC (ML=2/1), #8 RISTRE (ML=6/1), #1 GIULIO CESARE (ML=8/1),

TECHNO MUSIC - Awfully hard to play this entrant when he hasn't been showing any gumption of late. When checking today's class rating, he will have to notch a better speed figure than last time out to compete in this dirt route. RISTRE - 6/1 is not enough of a reward to take on most any racer that has run poorly in back to back efforts. Doubtful that the speed rating he garnered on September 28th will be good enough in this contest. GIULIO CESARE - If he goes off close to the oddsmaker's morning line of 8/1, I'll have to pass.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - TACITAP - The handler puts the 'hood' on. This magnificent animal should improve today with the equipment change.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: #10 CADENCED to win at post-time odds of 3/1 or better
