Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Late Pick 4 Analysis

    October 13, 2025 | By Al Cimaglia

Tonight, Yonkers Raceway has a $10,000 guaranteed pool for the $1 Pick 5 that rolls in Race 5. The $2.00 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 8, and it will be my focus. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 8 (9:05 PM EDT)

2-Manferno (6-1)-Steps up after beating the $60k claimers coming off cover. Could provide a nice payout in a race without a standout if Matt Kakely works another sharp steer.
4-Jomikiyoursofine (7/2)-Went the last 1/2-mile in 55.1 and just missed by a nose. There could be some big early speed in this affair, and a well-timed move can get this 5-year-old across the wire first.
6-Endofstory (5-1)-If the Dilloian 4-year-old is all systems go, Tyler Buter could try to out-leave Dunkin' to the outside and Red Wood Hanover on its inside. May have better gate speed then both, and will likely be a much better price than the other 2 and should like the company.

    Race 9 (9:25 PM EDT)

4-Goliath Hanover (9/2)-Will look for a solid # with a Burke trainee that might be overlooked. Buter probably has enough gate speed to out leave those on the inside and could get on the point or land in the pocket. Did beat this kind back on 9-1 coming off cover so that is an option too and did have the same post as tonight.

    Race 10 (9:45 PM EDT)

2-Himself N (4-1)-Drops to a spot to shine and draws well to be forwardly placed. Comes off flat efforts versus the Invites and hopefully will offer a square price. Should be a player if Austin Siegleman provides a smooth steer.
4-Aye Aye Captain N (5/2)-Came 2nd to Verdun who raced big last week. The Bucci trainee is usually in the hunt with a good draw and Brent Holland knows how to provide a winning trip.

    Race 11 (10:05 PM EDT)

1-Hickfromfrenchlick (6-1)-This isn't an easy race to read. Mark MacDonald knows the old-timer well and it has a big shot versus this bunch leaving from the rail. Beat better than this back in July and hasn't been in this cheap for a long time. Should be no worse than in the pocket off the car and could get on the point. Will look to fade the 9/5 morning line chalk Nandelo N until it proves it can seal the deal.

    $3.00 Late Pick 4

    2,4,6/4/2,4/1
    Total Bet=$18

      Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

Santa Anita Park - Race #6
#4 Bear's Board Have thought this filly was a pretty good fit in some recent races, and I like that she might find herself in a spot right in behind a couple of quicker players stacked up outside of her. Price might be a touch more appealing today, too.
#6 Alluring Valentine She's another with a claim on this one -- but I think you can make a fun case for a lot of them in here, so I might not be too excited to take a much shorter price this time around after she shared at 18/1 in a couple of recent starts.
#9 Jewlz Dropper has never seen this soft a spot, and she has some speed to prompt the other forward players from the outside. Wouldn't be a surprise.
Race Summary I'm hoping Bear's Board gets just a little shuffled on the board here while trying the local footing for the first time. She caught a couple easy winners at this kind of level before and might find the right trip today.
Santa Anita Park - Race #7
#7 Venganza Taking a little swing with this one in a race where I don't totally trust the ones who are likely to get bet. She has some pretty solid local lines from earlier this year, and I wonder if she can wake up while getting back on this turf course.
#6 Watchtower I've thought pretty highly of her compared to her actual running lines, but I also think she's riding a wave of decent enough excuses. Better stuff fits, and there are some really nice names on her page.
#11 Vibez Positional pace could get stuck wide from out here given her style, but the form is obviously there to be a player turning for home. No real argument from me, I'm just not that excited about her today.
Race Summary Venganza ran a couple races here earlier this year, including a couple decent tries in Grade III company, and I'm wondering if she might come back to life while getting her feet on this course again. Hoping we can draw a line through the long try last out and consider that her record at Del Mar isn't anything to write home about.
Santa Anita Park - Race #9
#11 Halstyn Rose She's not easy to trust with a lot of chances on her page, but she photo'd with an eventual Grade I winner earlier this year and should get the trip today. Right spot on the right day?
#1 My Perfect Wave Think you can go a handful of different ways in here, and this filly has some appeal while getting Lasix and going long for the first time with a pedigree to match. One of the ones.
#9 Grey Matter Nothing much from her on the Churchill turf when sprinting first out in May, but she has been working OK locally and might be meant for better today.
Race Summary Fun spot -- you could probably talk me into #3 Lady Chic or #7 Heads in Beds on top, maybe even #6 Helga Brandt. You get the point. Lots of options, so trust your gut.

        Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

        Parx - Race #3
#2 LOVE LIKE CRAZY (4-1) Tries to get through nw/2, 3 and 4 conditions in her last four starts.
#3 CHARM OF THE SONG (3-1) Rallied to win 3 of last 7 sprints at Parx to reach brink of $50k season.
#4 MO’S VINO MESA (5-1) Good recovery from another awkward start, rallied 3-wide, second to fave.
Race Summary LOVE LIKE CRAZY, 1-for-21 with several runner-up finishes through the first half of 2025, found her winning stride with back-to-back wins at Parx for higher claiming tags. She was overmatched last out but should go well in this spot. Bet to win and place and play 2-3 and 2-4 exactas.
        Parx - Race #6
#2 DEVIL’S CAY (3-1) Bid past clear leader in lane, out-kicked by rail-running fave from same barn.
#5 WHITEWALKER (8-1) Rallied to win both 6-1/2F starts, rest of field is combined 5-32 at distance.
#8 RUNYONESQUE (4-1) Solid numbers are offset by 1-for-29 record on a fast track.
Race Summary DEVIL’S CAY tracked the 3-1 pace setter alongside his 3-to-5 stablemate, made first run while 3- and 4-wide in the stretch but settled for second best. He’s 1-for-24 the last two years but he can get back in the win column with a duplicate performance. Bet to win and place and play 2-5 and 2-8 exactas.
        Parx - Race #2
#2 CHAMPAGNE MISCHIEF (9-2) Led in-hand, responded when challenged, in good form cycle.
#1 SHUDABEENACOWGIRL (4-1) Dueled throughout, just missed, returns to her level of claim.
#3 HALA BLUE (7-2) Found proper level, projects ideal trip, was under a drive on the turn two back.
Race Summary CHAMPAGNE MISCHIEF, under a snug hold until her closest pursuer turned up the pressure turning form home, dug in gamely and edged away late to her maiden-breaking win. She is reunited with Sanchez and appears rounding to another good race. Bet to win and place and play 2-2 and 2-3 daily doubles.

Presque Isle Downs - Race #3 - Post: 4:24pm - Maiden Special - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $36,000 Class Rating: 77

              Rating:

              #1 MACLEAN'S LULLABY (ML=5/2)
              #3 MALIBU MUSE (ML=9/5)

MACLEAN'S LULLABY - Stalking speed. My cronies and I like this animal. Faced tougher in the last race at Kentucky Downs. Based on Equibase class ratings, this is a weaker bunch, so I will put this thoroughbred on my list of top contenders. This horse picks up a lot of cash per start. Uppermost in this affair. MALIBU MUSE - Was in a Maiden Special race at Churchill Downs last out. That clash had a class number of 85 and she is moving down in this event. A certain serious competitor. Look for this filly to run much better right here. Last race at Churchill Downs finishing sixth on a track listed as good is no indication of her true ability.

              Vulnerable Contenders: #4 FORBIDDEN FRIEND (ML=7/2), #5 JOYOUS SONG (ML=5/1), #2 GOT A COMPLEX (ML=6/1),

FORBIDDEN FRIEND - This filly finished outside the top 3 on July 19th and wasn't close to victory in the last race either. Hasn't finished in the money in any short distance events of late. Not probable to see her doing it this time out either. JOYOUS SONG - Finished third in her most recent effort with a disappointing rating. When I look at today's class rating, it would take an improved performance to triumph after that in this bunch. GOT A COMPLEX - M/L odds of 6/1 make this horse a pass by my approach.

GUEST COMMENTARY: The Turf Man - MACLEAN'S LULLABY - This filly is moving from the turf to the dirt. Looking for her first win, this is a positive move.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: #1 MACLEAN'S LULLABY to win at post-time odds of 8/5 or better

                # 1 BALTIC FIRE 15/1
I've got to go with VENGANZA and is a very good value-based wager given the 30/1 line. This trainer has the strongest return on investment in this group with entries racing at this distance and surface. Ought to be considered a key contender on earnings per start at the distance/surface alone. I like the jockey on this mare - formidable chance to win the contest. VIOLETA M (ARG) - Has to be carefully examined here on the basis of the figs in the speed department alone. Very strong try today now going off Lasix. BALTIC FIRE - Win percentage one of the top in this field. Will probably go to the front end and might never look back.

                  Thistledown - Race #8 - Post: 4:20pm - Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $11,800 Class Rating: 60

                  Rating:

                  #1 LOOP OF HENLE (ML=6/1)
                  #7 CHAPTER AND VERSE (ML=2/1)
                  #3 GEEGEE'S STORY (ML=5/2)

LOOP OF HENLE - The Sep 16th clash at Presque Isle Downs was at a class level of (72). Dropping down the class ladder considerably, so she should be in a good spot. CHAPTER AND VERSE - Jockey and handler do well when they join forces. Barbaran and Rone have been dependable together. This filly was sharp enough to post a 'top two' workout recently. I think she's ready for today's event. This thoroughbred earns a lot of cash per race. I believe she will boost that total in this race. GEEGEE'S STORY - Widely used angle - 3rd or 4th start after a layoff generally leads to a big effort. A live horse today.

Vulnerable Contenders: #4 ENDLESS FASHION (ML=7/2), #2 TO MUCH STYLE (ML=5/1),

ENDLESS FASHION - If this race shapes up right, all the early pace horses will force a pretty mean duel early. Too bad this horse is one of those front runners. A pony that breaks her maiden in a Maiden Claimer is usually recognized as a poor risk next out. When examining today's class rating, she will have to record a much better speed figure than last time around the track to vie in this dirt sprint. TO MUCH STYLE - There's speed, early speed, and more early speed in this race. Doesn't look promising for this horse. Should be difficult for this thoroughbred to beat this group off of that last speed fig. Improbable to improve enough to run a figure close enough to today's Equibase class figure, so put her on the likely underlays list.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Go with #1 LOOP OF HENLE on top if we're getting at least 9/2 odds

                    RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                    # 2 DEVIL'S CAY 3/1
                    # 3 REBEL INVASION 6/1
                    # 8 RUNYONESQUE 4/1
DEVIL'S CAY has a quite good shot to take this race. Has to be given consideration here on the basis of the numbers in the speed department alone. Trainer boasts strong win figures at this distance and surface. Had one of the top Equibase Speed Figures of this group in his last race. REBEL INVASION - He looks quite good in this slot and I expect will be on the front end or close at the halfway point. Very good selection to take this race going in a dirt sprint. RUNYONESQUE - With a strong 82 average speed rating at the distance, seems well suited for today's race. Is tough not to consider based on Equibase Speed Figures which have been formidable - 80 avg - of late.
