Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Late Pick 4 Analysis

    October 20, 2025 | By Al Cimaglia

    XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Yonkers Raceway begins the week with a 10-race card. The $1.00 Pick 5 rolls in Race 5 and has a $10,000 guaranteed pool. The $2.00 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 7, and it will be my focus. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 7 (8:45 PM EDT)

4-Jamaican Rock A (5-1)-Here’s a chance for a square price in what could be a chalky sequence. The driver change to Colin Kelly could make a difference. He should be aggressive when the wings fold and might end up with a pocket ride. Knows how to dance with this kind, has won 10 of 15 this year and has 3 pictures in 5 races at Yonkers.
6-Redwood Hanover (5/2)-This is the 3rd start off a sick scratch and had no problem going gate to wire in the last 2. Steps up to battle Open company, Jason Bartlett sticks and he will look to time the gate again. Best to respect chances for a 3-peat.

    Race 8 (9:05 PM EDT)

1-Heza A Charttopper A (5/2)-Won 4 back and has cashed smaller checks in the last 3 against tougher. Drops to the same level as 6-30. That night, left from the rail and went gate to wire. Has won 12 of 30 this year and 13 of 28 on the Hilltop.
3-Tenzing Bromac N (3-1)-Maryland shipper lands in a winnable spot, and recent form has been good on a 1/2-mile track plus has good gate speed. Team Cushing gets Bartlett to drive the lightly raced 8-year-old. When Cushing and Bartlett combine, they have 1 win in 3 races.

    Race 9 (9:25 PM EDT)

1-Windsun Ricky (5/2)-Gets needed post relief and drops to a soft spot. Brent Holland grabs the lines, and he will look to make every call a winning one. That should be the plan as was the case the last time in versus similar.
2-Ulysses (3-1)-Drops and should be no worse than 2nd around the opening turn. The 1-22 record this year is cause for pause but Bartlett sticks. He gets the 4-year-old yr old going. Last week, had a 56.2 back half but was too far back leaving from the 8-hole. Then 2 back he lost by a 1/2-length in 151.2 with a 27.2 last panel. Could be sitting on big try here.

    Race 10 (9:45 PM EDT)

2-Why Tomorrow Ray (3-1)-This will be the 3rd start after a claim for the Odza barn and hasn't been close to winning against better. Now drops, and Bartlett will be between the pipes. He has won with the 5-year-old versus this kind. Likes to race at the top of the stack and that trip should be coming.
6-Warrior For The Truth (3-1)-Took the top prize at 2/5 by getting on the engine and not looking back. Has been claimed in 8 of the last 9 races and now lands in the Laterza barn who wasn't part of the other claims. Will be looking for the 4th straight picture and doesn't need to lead every step of the way to win again.

    $2 Late Pick 4

    4,6/1,3/1,2/2,6
    Total Bet=$32

      Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

Presque Isle Downs - Race #2
#9 Pioneer Bowl This barn bookends the field with a couple of well-bred runners for big-name partners with pretty low expectations in this debut spot. Check them out on the tote and track, but there is nothing to be seriously afraid of on paper here, so I'm looking for a fresh face (or two).
#8 Coach Rudy I guess he's supposed to be tough while cutting the price in half and trying the local crew for the first time, but wouldn't it have been nice to see something a tiny bit better when trying claimers for the first time last out? Could air here, but you can have him -- especially at any kind of short price.
#3 Lucky Number Three He was a bit better last out when going long at second asking, and now he's back down in class to try a route at this softer level. Two-back winner scored with a decent bunch going long here the other day....
Race Summary Closing week at one of my favorite meets of the year -- hope you had fun following along with a handful of really nice prices in this space...and also some serious duds. Pioneer Bowl and #1 Pillow Fight seem interesting enough in a spot where none of them really stand out. Suppose Lucky Number three has some clever appeal if he gets lost on the board.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #5
#4 Violenta Feels like she's sure to get overlooked while running into some players out of barns that will take action on name alone here. Goes for a barn that dropped a $21 winner with a debuter here last month. Check her out.
#2 Intimate She woke up last out after the two-back dud, and she has some confirmed pace in a race that lacks it on paper. New faces might keep the tempo honest, but she might be in the right kind of spot turning for home with something left in the tank.
#7 Sun Kiss She was no serious threat at 6/5 last time out, but that kind of effort probably fits pretty well right back. Not that enthused, but she can win this.
Race Summary Violenta makes her debut run in what feels like a pretty modest spot for the local level, but there are some runners here from some pretty capable teams, so I'm hoping she's a bit overlooked on the board.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #7
#3 Twilight Dancer He and #7 He's a Mess both fit well here and have been in some classier spots than they're going to see here, but they're also both likely to get bet in a spot where you can make the case they're in for a two-horse race. Think he'll handle these.
#1 Mackenzie's Novva His best stuff is probably just a touch too cheap to stay in the frame with the logical two in here, but I do like the way he's run several times here this season and wonder if he can settle and save ground for a share. Will try to get him in the exacta.
#6 Extrasexybigdaddee He's still bringing pretty honest efforts, but I think he's mostly a step removed from his very best stuff here over the years. Still, he's good enough to share, even if it looks like he'd need a couple misfires to land this.
Race Summary Twilight Dancer should be a handful in here, and think he's the right one of the pair in a top-heavy race. Hoping Mackenzie's Novva can run his way into the gimmicks while overlooked.

        #4
        Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

        Parx - Race #1
#4 COCKTIAL HUMOR (4-1) Game try on class rise off claim, tired late, finished behind next-out winner.
#5 DEVILS ARROW (3-1) Chased recent, wire-to-wire repeater around the track after 14 months away.
#7 ACT OF FAITH (6-1) Used up in fast-paced long sprint in MSW company, changes riders.
Race Summary COCKTAIL HUMOR broke sharply, set a clear pace to the far turn, battled when headed at the top of the stretch and gave way late at one mile. She fired a :48 bullet workout since then and is perfectly spotted to graduate in her second start off the Ness claim. Bet to win and place and play a 4-5-7 exacta box.
        Parx - Race #2
#1 CARA BLANCA (9-2) Built clear lead on turn, wilted in final eighth in long sprint, good spot today.
#5 WHATTA WORLD (3-1) Rode rail, awaited room twice in the stretch, got up to finish second.
#4 GOLDEN PHILLY (7-2) Bold move on turn, wore down ‘Cara’ but got caught late for the victory.
Race Summary CARA BLANCA has speed and can use it well from the rail on the slight class drop. She gained the lead 3-wide in her last start, widened on the turn, but was no match for a pair of onrushing rivals. She has two wins at 6F and the rest of the field is a combined 3-for-44. Bet to win and place and play 1-4 and 1-5 exactas.
        Parx - Race #4
#5 WONDERFULVENEZUELA (5-1) Steps up off the claim, will be running late, use in all gimmicks.
#8 LEILAUNI SUE (9-5) Figures close-up throughout for high-percentage, new acquisition barn.
#1 BREEZETHRUTIME (4-1) Backed off duel, hard-ridden turn, no match for drifting longshot two back.
Race Summary WONDERFULVENEZUELA, unhurried to the far turn going a route of ground, gained quickly on the inside but was no match for the rallying even-money winner. She needs some pace flow to upstage eight runner-up finishes in 19 starts on dirt, but the price is right for a win and place bet and a 5/1, 8/ALL trifecta.

Race 5 - Maiden Special Weight - 6.0f on the Dirt. Purse: $36000 Class Rating: 66

FOR MAIDENS, FILLIES TWO YEARS OLD. WEIGHT, 120 LBS.
              RECOMMENDED CHOICES
              # 4 VIOLENTA 6/1
              # 9 RUM ROW 5/1
              # 3 ZAFFA 8/1
VIOLENTA is the best bet in this race. This trainer is reliable with starters in two-year old races. Conditioner has a knack of keeping 2 year olds in very solid contention when they turn for home. Violence is a reliable sire when it comes to two-year olds. RUM ROW - Cannot be ignored - Walden is a strong trainer with the babies, winning 17 of his races. Has strong sire dividends and may be worth the dangerous nature of a two-year old race. ZAFFA - Walsh has a very strong shot every time he puts a 2 year old on the track. With a reliable jockey who has won at a decent 27 percent clip over the last month. This has to be one of the top selections.

                # 4 PINE VALLEY 8/1
                # 6 TRENDS ARE UP 15/1
My choice in this contest is KOOL DYNASTY. She has been running admirably and the speed figures are among the strongest in this group of horses. The Equibase class rating of today's affair is much lower than her last race. Is a definite contender - given the 81 Equibase Speed Fig from her most recent race. PINE VALLEY - The price might be just right on this horse. Should expect a sound attempt with the class drop. TRENDS ARE UP - Have to examine solely on class, with some of the strongest class figs of this field. It's a good signal that Willis is using Gutierrez on this one.

                  Mountaineer Park - Race #6 - Post: 9:05pm - Allowance - 8.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $18,000 Class Rating: 76

                  Rating:

                  #4 Z DANCER (ML=5/1)
                  #2 SPY WARS (ML=5/2)

Z DANCER - Look for this horse to run lots better right here. Last race at Mountaineer Park finishing sixth in the slop is no sign of his true talent. Taking a drop in class figure points from his Sep 22nd race at Mountaineer Park. Based on that information, I will give this animal the edge. This horse is at the top in (EPS) earnings per start. Give the once over to this horse before the race. SPY WARS - You always have to be on the prowl for money making jockey/trainer combinations; we have one right here. Faced tougher last out at Laurel. Based on class ratings, this is a weaker field, so I will put this one on my list of contenders. Came home fast last out at Laurel. That type of move bodes well for his chances in this race.

                  Vulnerable Contenders: #6 SAMMICH ME (ML=9/5), #3 KLIMTSTER (ML=7/2), #1 MONJE SOLAIA (ML=6/1),

SAMMICH ME - This horse recorded a speed figure in his last race which probably isn't good enough in today's race. KLIMTSTER - If you keep selecting these sort of 'bridesmaid' types, you're going to be let down most of the time. Latest fig of 72 may not be valid since it was on a track listed as good. MONJE SOLAIA - This animal doesn't have a winning state of mind. Often finishes in the place or show spot.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Play #4 Z DANCER to win if you can get odds of 5/2 or more

Mahoning Valley Race Course - Race #7 - Post: 3:03pm - Allowance - 8.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $25,900 Class Rating: 78

                    Rating:

                    #6 DERBY DAY KISS (ML=6/1)
                    #4 DREAMING OF AUDREY (ML=5/2)
                    #2 LATE NITE LIZZIE (ML=4/1)

DERBY DAY KISS - Finished off the board last out at Thistledown, but was within five lengths of the winner. Opening at 6/1 makes me think she's got a chance. The rest of the bunch may trail this horse all the way around the track. I like this filly. Has the top earnings per race in this contest. DREAMING OF AUDREY - A horse coming back this quickly after a solid contest is a good sign. A little change in scenery has got to do this one well. Reading the recent past performance lines, it seems like she likes to visit the winner's circle at multiple race tracks. This mare is a gem of consistency, almost always on the board. This mare's last speed rating garnered on September 26th is uppermost in last race speed ratings. LATE NITE LIZZIE - Using this jock/trainer combination is a good choice. Have to make this filly a serious competitor; she comes off a sharp race on Sep 26th.

                    Vulnerable Contenders: #1 FIVECLOCKSOMEWHERE (ML=8/5), #7 CEEBEE (ML=8/1),

FIVECLOCKSOMEWHERE - I can't play this confirmed non-winner. Gets the job completed infrequently. The speed rating last out doesn't fit very well in this affair when I look at the Equibase class figure of today's race. Mark this racer as a likely underpriced equine. CEEBEE - This was a fit horse, but now this one hasn't been doing anything in the morning. Have to watch your step with this weaker runner. Recorded a run-of-the-mill speed figure in the last race in a $15,000 Claiming race on September 24th. Not probable to see an improved performance off of that fig.
