Al Cimaglia: Northfield Park Late Pick 4 Analysis

    October 26, 2025 | By Al Cimaglia

    XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Northfield Park has a 14-race card with the $1.00 Late Pick 4 starting in Race 11. The sequence has a $10,000 guaranteed pool with a 14% takeout, and it will be my focus. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 11 (9:40 PM EDT)

6-Jillian B Miki (5-1)-Left the gate slowly against this kind and came off cover to finish 2nd by less than a length. Regular pilot Ronnie Wrenn is back at the controls. This is the 4th start off the bench and will look for a more aggressive drive as soon as the car pulls away.
7-Bonitas best Bet (5/2)-Ships back from Kentucky, faded to finish 4th in last and has been off a couple of weeks. Took a picture against this kind at Nfld 2 back and fits with this crew. Dan Noble steers for Ron Burke and that doesn't happen often but when they combine the win rate is 30%.
8-Soft Shot (2-1)-Won last time from the 6-hole and Aaron Merriman will have the pedal down once again. Got a 2-hole ride, then rolled by and will be looking to do similar. Has won 10 of 16 at Nfld and could add to that total tonight but it probably won't be as easy.

    Race 12 (10:00 PM EDT)

2-Downthejerseyshore (6/5)-Wrenn steers for the 2nd straight and the Brandon Presto trainee steps up off a dominant win. Will be better than 1/9 this time but still will be a tiny price. This is a main player and when this driver-trainer combo works together they post 35% winners.
8-Rising Fire (7/2)-Finished a clear 2nd to a well-meant winner in last. Sat the pocket all the way around and the beaten chalk will look to leave and land the same trip. It seems Noble could follow that plan, drop-in behind the one above and look to go by down the lane.

    Race 13 (10:20 PM EDT)

1-Think Of Galaxies (2-1)-Dropped out of Open company where the water was deep and was hung the mile leaving from post 7 versus NW8000L4. Now drops again, draws the rail, comes back in sequence, and Justin Irving steers again. The Cory Kreiser barn has been hot posting 30% winners over the last 30 days. The top contender #8, She Comes And Goes leaves from post 8. There really is no reason this veteran mare doesn't protect the rail and make every call a winning one.

    Race 14 (10:40 PM EDT)

1-Sunomybuns (7/5)-The Burke pupil had a 2-race win streak snapped last week on a sloppy track and finished 2nd at 8/5. Will probably be a shorter price here, but keep in mind is 0-4 on an off-track. Last week's winner isn't in this field and Wrenn could get on the engine and not look back.
3-Crytel Shadow (6-1)-The Mario Wilson trainee was hung the mile last week in the slop and came 3rd at 24-1 after beating easier. This horse has been double bubbled more frequently than it would seem possible. Has raced 3-wide in 8 of the last 12 races and now gets one of the best 1/2-mile drivers in the bike. This level will be a test and doesn't win often. But Noble can work a winning trip and the possible up setter should be used at this price.

    $2.00 Late Pick 4

    6,7,8/2,8/1/1,3
    Total Bet=$24

      #3
      Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

Santa Anita Park - Race #6
#4 Lucky Tiger Debuter brings a pretty forward series of works to this one and meets a group without a ton of early standout form. Take a look at him on the tote and track, but I wouldn't be surprised to see him land this out of the box.
#9 Cal's Goal He brings a decent enough debut try to this second start, and a reasonable move forward off that run would probably keep him in the frame again. Lot of question marks in this field, but he feels like the one to beat.
#10 Almost There He chased and settled for second behind an easy winner in the Del Mar debut, and he's another with some logical upside while going second time out.
Race Summary Lucky Tiger seems likely enough to be ready to roll today, and there isn't a whole lot of imposing form on paper here from those who have run.
Santa Anita Park - Race #8
#4 Innovative Love the way she's going right now, having landed three of her last four while only taking an L when facing the talented Thought Process. Versatile type might be able to play with these.
#2 Slick She was just a couple lengths off that Grade I run in August, and I think this spot gives her a chance to establish a little bit of class after toying with that idea throughout her career so far.
#1 Precise Timing More questions than answers here as she brings that Emerald form with her while trying the turf for the first time, but she might find a pretty cozy trip on the fence if she likes the new footing. Could share?
Race Summary Innovative looks like a good fit in here -- the one who handed her that June loss here went on to share in the Grade I Del Mar Oaks, so I think you can give her the benefit of the doubt on the mild class question today. Honestly excited to see if she can hang.
Santa Anita Park - Race #10
#11 Shezmisbehaving She's going to need to avoid getting too out of touch early while turning back today, but I really like her honest finishing form. Worry is the race shape in a spot without a ton of committed early burn, but I wonder if she lands the knockout punch anyway.
#5 Dare to Fly She should find a great spot while up close again, and she proved a good fit with some of these last time out. Main concern is the way she tends to give away ground late in her races, but the shape should still flatter her today.
#6 Royal Charter Nothing to write home about in the last one, but the winner that day was back to post a Black Type stakes score here a couple weeks ago. Not super excited about her, but I wouldn't shake my head too hard if she got home first.
Race Summary Consider #3 Yellow Sun Dress as a logical player, but I think this one is competitive enough to go looking around. Shezmisbehaving has a sharp closing kick, and I'm hoping she'll punch home best of this bunch.

            # 3 CERVECERA 2/1
            # 11 PATRIA MIA 7/2
I have to support DONA RAQUEL for this event and is a very strong value bet given the line. Must be given a shot as she drops to compete against this less demanding lot. CERVECERA - This choice will feel the med change - with second time Lasix today. This filly looks good in this event since Betancourt has a sharp win percent with horses going this distance. PATRIA MIA - In against a much less demanding field than last time out.

              Woodbine - Race #4 - Post: 2:35pm - Optional Claiming - 8.5 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $63,800 Class Rating: 90

              Rating:

              #1 WELLER GREEN (ML=8/1)
              #2 EL COHETE (ML=5/1)
              #6 PRIVATE LABEL (ML=6/5)

WELLER GREEN - Rider hops right back aloft after getting to know the thoroughbred by riding last time around the track. That's always a helpful angle. EL COHETE - I believe this equine isn't a natural sprinter. Routing is his best game and those last two sprints should have him set for a big run today. The animal with the top average class figure in turf events is usually a solid play. This campaigner fits the bill. Getting a break of 5 pounds from last race at Woodbine. He should make the most of this advantage. PRIVATE LABEL - Desruisseaux is great in turf routes. This animal should have no allowances if he doesn't win. Ranks uppermost in earnings per race. A solid try right here in this race can add to the lifetime bankroll.

              Vulnerable Contenders: #3 JAGGERSGOTAGUN (ML=3/1), #5 COUNTRYBOYSURVIVE (ML=6/1),

JAGGERSGOTAGUN - Speed kills. Plenty of speed in this contest compromises this horse's dreams at winning. Looked like he was in good form on October 5th. Hasn't been near the track since then though. Not a positive sign. COUNTRYBOYSURVIVE - It seems like too much speed is entered in this affair. This speedball will almost certainly get baked up front.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: #1 WELLER GREEN to win at post-time odds of 7/2 or better

                # 9 DARE TO BREEZE 9/2
TRAVEL HAPPY has a very good shot to take this contest especially at a such a nice price. Is a sharp contender based on figures put up as of late under today's conditions. She has been racing strongly recently while recording strong speed figures. Will likely be one of the leaders of the pack going into the halfway point of the race. GREENFIELD COUGAR - This filly has posted some nice finishes in her last couple of tries. Had one of the best Equibase Speed Figs of this field in her last race. DARE TO BREEZE - Decent gamble today with second time Lasix. It's a good signal that Casse is using Vasquez on this entrant.

Belmont at the Big A - Race #9 - Post: 5:18pm - Maiden Claiming - 8.5 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $48,000 Class Rating: 75

                  Rating:

                  #3 DEEMER (ML=5/2)
                  #1 ARCH'S ASSAULT (ML=8/1)
                  #5 POWERED BY COAL (ML=20/1)

DEEMER - In this race here, this horse has clearly shown signs that he likes the grass. His speed ratings are the highest in the field for this dist-surf. This animal is number one in earnings per start. He looks strong in today's affair. ARCH'S ASSAULT - Rosario and Baker teamed up together are a horse gambler's friend. Rosario is up for another race today after riding on board this animal for the first attempt on September 28th and ought to know the ropes to this one a little better. Baker will try adding the 'hood' today in hopes of an improved performance. POWERED BY COAL - Hennig has this gelding signed up for the right race.

                  Vulnerable Contenders: #12 CHRIS'S SONG (ML=2/1), #9 BLUE PILL (ML=5/1), #4 NONNO JOE (ML=6/1),

BLUE PILL - Just can't play this racer. Didn't show me anything in the last race or on September 28th. NONNO JOE - This horse just hasn't looked ready of late.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Putting our cash on #3 DEEMER to win. Have to have odds of at least 5/2 or better though
