Jeremy Plonk: Breeders’ Cup Post Draw Reaction & Specia

    October 27, 2025 | By Jeremy Plonk

The 42nd edition of the Breeders’ Cup attracted 191 entries over 14 championship races at today’s post position draw. Southern California’s Del Mar Thoroughbred Club hosts the festivities Friday and Saturday for a fourth time and welcomes headliners like Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes winner Sovereignty. His potential place in history meets at a crossroads with last year’s 1-2-3 finishers in the $7 million Classic.

Sovereignty begins the mile and one-quarter Classic from post 6 as the 6-5 morning line favorite. Defending Classic winner Sierra Leone (post 7, 8-1), ’24 runner-up Fierceness (post 1, 4-1) and ’24 third-place finisher Forever Young (post 5, 6-1) flank the likely favorite. The Classic field also boasts this year’s Preakness winner Journalism (post 9, 10-1), who joins Baeza (post 2, 15-1) in renewing their spring and summer rivalries with Sovereignty.

Horseplayers with 1/ST BET and Xpressbet can take advantage of the $20,000 Exacta-Thon promotion that spans Friday and Saturday. Access the free 1/ST Breeders’ Cup Wager Guide for additional handicapping data and analysis. https://news.1st.com/wager-guides/breeders-cup

From a handicapping standpoint, the Classic starting spots should not have a huge impact given the long run to the first turn and moderate field size. But the obvious talking point to the Classic draw is Fierceness landing the rail immediately after ducking in at the start of the Pacific Classic over the same trip and track last time out. He overcame it that day and will have to do so once again with early pace pressure just to his outside with Contrary Thinking (post 4, 50-1) and Nevada Beach (post 3, 20-1). Contrary Thinking entered as a pacemaker (“rabbit”) to help the chances of stablemate Sierra Leone.

Defending Breeders’ Cup winners dot the Saturday program: Full Serrano (post 6) in the Dirt Mile; Straight No Chaser (post 12) in the Sprint; and Rebel’s Romance (post 1) in a bid for a third career Turf title. Only Goldikova and Beholder have ever won 3 Breeders’ Cup races. Also in action: 2024 Kentucky Derby winner Mystik Dan (post 4) and 2024 Breeders’ Cup Classic winner White Abarrio (post 10) in the Dirt Mile.

The two-day BC gets underway with Future Stars Friday and its 5-race championship lineup for 2-year-olds. Trainer Aidan O’Brien, who looks to surpass D. Wayne Lukas as the winningest trainer in Breeders’ Cup history with his next score, brings potential heavy favorites with unfortunate widest post draws in the Juvenile Turf (Gstaad, post 14) and Juvenile Fillies Turf (Precise, post 13). The international raiders also will be looking for a fourth straight win in the Juvenile Turf Sprint to open the card, while the Americans seek to continue their stranglehold in the dirt races, the Juvenile and Juvenile Fillies. The Juvenile features Ted Noffey (post 8) and Brant (post 7) for divisional heavyweights Todd Pletcher and Bob Baffert as the freshmen class looks toward winter favoritism for next year’s Kentucky Derby.

Post time Friday will be 2:35 pm ET. Saturday’s action gets underway at 1:05 pm ET. Advance wagering on the Saturday card will be available beginning on Friday.

Breeders’ Cup Classic | Saturday | Del Mar Race 9 | 6:25 pm ET

    #1-Fierceness (John Velazquez / Todd Pletcher) 4-1
    #2-Baeza (Hector Berrios / John Shirreffs) 15-1
#3-Nevada Beach (Mike Smith / Bob Baffert) 20-1
#4-Contrary Thinking (Florent Geroux / Chad Brown) 50-1
#5-Forever Young (Ryusei Sakai / Yoshito Yahagi) 6-1
    #6-Sovereignty (Junior Alvarado / Bill Mott) 6-5
#7-Sierra Leone (Flavien Prat / Chad Brown) 8-1
#8-Mindframe (Irad Ortiz Jr. / Todd Pletcher) 10-1
    #9-Journalism (Jose Ortiz / Michael McCarthy) 10-1
    #10-Antiquarian (Luis Saez / Todd Pletcher) 15-1

      Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

      Mahoning Valley - Race #6
#8 So Dialed In Don't trust him a whole lot, but he draws well to maybe watch things unfold in a race without a whole lot of finishing punch. He occasionally gets past some horses. Why not?
#7 Aye Aye Sir He gets the best of the pace draw to force the issue if the other speed closer to the fence wants to tussle early, and he has historically been pretty solid over the local footing.
#3 Bucket List A couple of those races here last season might be good enough to make some noise today, and he might bring something better after getting a break with sour form earlier this year.
Race Summary So Dialed In might be an OK price here with a little bit of pace to chase, and I'm hoping a little bit of other speed keeps Aye Aye Sir from getting a breather on the turn.
      Mahoning Valley - Race #7
#5 Counteveryblessing Ohio-bred has a little bit of price appeal here, as he followed the hat trick with a respectable third-place finish in stakes company last time out. The runner just inside of him today also came back to flatter his two-back win. Maybe.
#9 Atkins He has been pretty honest over the last year, and he has just enough positional pace on occasion to avoid having to finish from too far off the pace today.
#10 Extradition He did what he was supposed to do at 80 cents on the dollar last out when dropping out of a St. Louis Derby that has come back pretty well so far. He has been solid when he hasn't been facing stakes company, so he can be tough right back today.
Race Summary Counteveryblessing looks interesting enough at what should be a midrange price, and he figures for another good trip right up near the top.
      Mahoning Valley - Race #8
#6 Tempered Dream He might be a bit of a reach, but he's capable of something better than he showed in the last pair, and getting back to a top effort might be enough to keep him in the mix late. Right kind of run just behind the more committed pace players?
#5 Ronnis Second Wind His form can be a bit up and down, but some of those dull tries on the page came in stakes company, and he's capable of some efforts that would probably leave the rest running for second.
#1 Romanian Prince He's got the tactical pace to make his own trip, and that has keep him in the frame in almost every race on his page. Figures right there while waiting to take first jump.
Race Summary Tempered Dream needs his best stuff, but I'm looking for a bounce-back effort at an OK price today while tracking the obvious other pair.

        Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

        Horseshoe Indianapolis - Race #1
#1 ESKY’S ECHO (5-1) Barn is 20/2-6-2 with debut runners at 9-2 odds or less since February.
#4 BEBECITA (5-2) Can carry her speed farther upon exiting MSW company.
#2 AMY EL (8-1) Veered in at break, brief bid mid-turn at same distance in race won by 2-1 firster.
Race Summary The odds will tell something about ESKY’S ECHO. From the last 20 first-time starters for trainer Aaron West, 15 were dismissed at 9-2 odds or less and they resulted in two wins, six seconds and two thirds. There’s no proven form in here, so give the 2-year-old filly the benefit of the doubt. Bet to win and place and play 1-2 and 1-4 exactas.
        Horseshoe Indianapolis - Race #4
#3 PRAYER’S BEAUTY (5-2) Led clear at the stretch call in 4 of 5 starts, winning twice.
#2 SAKRA’S QUEST (9-5) Pressed the pace 4-wide and overpowered ‘Prayer’ in allowance victory.
        #6 C V SCENIC LEGACY (10-1) Lightly-raced 5yo likes the Horseshoe, needed comeback race.
Race Summary PRAYER’S BEAUTY was a bit unsettled in the gate, hopped at the break and was no match for morning-line favorite SAKRA’S QUEST the only time they met. But she went wire-to-wire in the two sprints surrounding that runner-up finish and, perhaps, can turn the tables for leading trainer Tim Eggelston. Bet to win and place and play 3-2-6 and 2-3-6 trifectas.
        Horseshoe Indianapolis - Race #7
#3 STRESS TEST (3-1) Good works, good barn, good turf bloodlines for debuting 2yo filly.
#10 HOWYOUDOSOMETHING (9-2) Took money, saved ground, mild bid in turf-to-dirt sprint.
#8 HUMOR ME BABY (5-2) Beaten fave at Ellis in race that produced 6/0-0-0 follow-ups.
Race Summary STRESS TEST tries to follow the footsteps of her stakes-winning dam, Sirenusa (4-7, $180k on turf), who won the first three starts of her career for the same barn. Her sire, Hard Spun, has produced 143 grass sprint winners, good form $7.7 million in earnings. Bet to win and place.

              # 5 BARTULIA 5/2
              # 4 JERRY'S OUT 3/1
GONE BOY should be supported as the wager in here. This colt has a very good winning percentage in dirt route races. Ran a strong last race. Solid jockey with conditioner figures make this horse a sharp wagering choice. BARTULIA - Could provide positive returns based on strong recent Equibase Speed Figures with an average of 82. Had one of the best speed figures of this group in his last race. JERRY'S OUT - Always good to invest in a trainer with this kind of decent win percentage - 33 percent - at this distance & surface. With Pagan uptop him, this colt ought to be able to break out quickly in this race.

                # 8 HUMOR ME BABY 5/2
                # 10 HOWYOUDOSOMETHING 9/2
LADY BLAST looks very good to best this field. Will probably be one of the leaders of the pack going into the halfway point of the race. Camejo has a strong win percent with horses racing in turf sprint races. Has to be given a chance versus this group of horses in this race displaying solid numbers lately and an average Equibase speed fig of 55 under similar conditions. HUMOR ME BABY - Roman should be able to get this filly to break out quickly in this contest. This field is much softer than the last one she was up against. HOWYOUDOSOMETHING - Could best this group of horses here, showing competitive figures of late. Ought to be considered in here if only for the respectable Equibase Speed Fig garnered in the last contest.

Mahoning Valley Race Course - Race #6 - Post: 2:35pm - Claiming - 5.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $20,400 Class Rating: 91

                  Rating:

                  #8 SO DIALED IN (ML=5/1)
                  #6 MORETHANREADYEDDIE (ML=5/2)

                  #1 SMOKIN' HOT (ML=10/1)

SO DIALED IN - Coming off a fourth place finish at Thistledown, some may pass this horse. I'm not. He just missed hitting the show spot, and has respectable odds today. MORETHANREADYEDDIE - Have to give this gelding a good chance. Ran a solid effort in the last race within the last month or so. This gelding is rounding his way back into shape. Should race well today. The improved Equibase speed figures over the last 3 races is solid. Gonzalez drops him in this contest in shape and ready to win. The 91 last race fig looks good in black and white. TIME THE AVENGER - This gelding is the longer price of the 'split' entry from the barn of Rivera. Sub-par performance last time out at Thistledown was due to the off-going (he ran eighth). Have to do better in this race under better track conditions. SMOKIN' HOT - I figure that this contest's shorter distance should help this gelding. Widely used handicapping theory - 3rd or 4th start after a vacation generally leads to a big effort. This one is live today.

Vulnerable Contenders: #7 AYE AYE SIR (ML=2/1), #4 MR. BONES (ML=8/1),

AYE AYE SIR - The pace scenario just isn't too promising for this speedball. Many other horses would have to scratch to help his dreams at winning.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #8 SO DIALED IN to win if you can get at least 6/1 odds

                    Parx Racing - Race #8 - Post: 3:53pm - Maiden Special - 8.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $50,000 Class Rating: 84

                    Rating:

                    #2 DARK DEVIL (ML=5/2)
                    #5 ZIO SALINO (ML=15/1)

DARK DEVIL - This gelding is in top physical condition right now. Ran third last time around the track and comes back rapidly. Like the way this gelding's finish positions keep getting better. That's a sure sign of improving form. Earnings per start is something that I believe can be a very valuable factor. This entrant is ranked the highest in this field. ZIO SALINO - This gelding is certainly on the improve with speed figures of 38, 64, 73 last 3 out.

                    Vulnerable Contenders: #6 RHYTHM 'N BLUES (ML=2/1), #3 CHOWSER (ML=3/1), #7 RICKIE'S KIN (ML=8/1),

RHYTHM 'N BLUES - Don't think this horse is worth 2/1 in this race. CHOWSER - When scrutinizing today's Equibase class figure, he will have to earn a better speed rating than last time out to compete in this dirt route. RICKIE'S KIN - Don't think this horse will make an impact today. That last speed figure was most unsatisfactory when compared with today's Equibase class figure.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Go with #2 DARK DEVIL on top if we're getting at least 7/5 odds
