    Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

    Mahoning Valley - Race #3
#1 Kelley Jean She's likely to deal with some pressure from a couple forward players drawn wider, but she's back fresh while dropping back in for a tag, and she may be the most committed pace from the fence.
#7 Renewed She's fast enough to keep the top choice in close range early, and she has so far been pretty tough when trying claiming company. Good fit can land this.
#5 Holiday Musical She's another who can stay in the frame early on, and she gets in for a tag for the first time, so there is probably at least a tiny bit of upside today. She makes sense -- I'm just not that excited about her.
Race Summary Kelley Jean ran up the track a few times at Thistledown in the spring, but she turned in a couple good efforts here last season and might fire fresh today while dropping.
    Mahoning Valley - Race #7
#8 Banana Pudding She's one of the few in here with any semblance of finishing form, and she probably has some room to bounce back while getting back over her favorite footing today. Not sure she's 12/1...
#5 Drills Wild Brat There might be just enough other pressing and chasing pace to keep things honest, but she's likely to have a go for it on the front end and wouldn't surprise at all. Considered her on top and need her on the tickets.
#4 Belle Bottoms She's typically in the hunt turning for home, and that might be enough to keep her in line for a share today while staying on at one pace. She's not out of the question.
Race Summary Banana Pudding might bring something better today while racing fresh, and she has a couple of built-in excuses from stakes and synthetic starts as part of that dull form.
    Mahoning Valley - Race #8
#3 Don't Stop He might get an OK run of things here, and he has done some pretty good work over the local footing. Price might be OK to spy and finish.
#1 Just Like Rambo Turnback pace has been quick enough to find the front sprinting in the past, but I wonder if that hustle would lead to a tough trip with some other semi-serious pace lined up. Capable.
#6 Momma K's Boy He's got some pace but has shown an ability to shut off just a touch in the past, and that could lead him to a nice kind of first-jump run today. In the mix again.
Race Summary Don't Stop might be a midrange kind of price with mostly underneath form on his page, but I think today's race flow flatters that grinding style.

      Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

      Penn National - Race #1
#1 C’EST CHOUETTE (4-1) Sharp in main-track debut, can repeat for 27-percent barn with 2-year-olds.
#3 DOWNANDDIRTYDONNA (5-1) Switch back to off-pace tactics could be the winning answer in here.
#5 KEYSTONE STATE (5-2) ‘Chouette’ stablemate is by Top 5 sire in progeny earnings this year.
Race Summary C’EST CHOUETTE sped off to an early lead, widened on the turn and won in her first start on the dirt. The middle fractions stacked up well with a same-day, $50,000 optional claiming race for the boys. Bet to win and place and play 1-3 and 1-5 exactas.
      Penn National - Race #7
#1 WATERLOO ROSE (6-1) Wired field at 1M two back, eligible for this softer spot by 10 days.
#7 ME DARLIN KATHLEEN (4-1) Won under these conditions in Spring, stands 10/2-3-3 this year.
#9 SHE’SAROLLINGSTONE (3 Out-kicked by 84-1 winner after three months away, enters new barn.
Race Summary WATERLOO ROSE is 7-for-23 with more than $100,000 in earnings since 2024. Now she runs for the cheapest claiming price of her 60-race career. She gets the nod to win at her sixth different distance. Bet to win and place and play a 1-ALL exacta.
      Penn National - Race #9
#6 MARY’S REWARD (4-1) Rewarded loyal backers with overdue win, takes catching in repeat bid.
#1 OLIVIA DEE (15-1) Has top fast-track speed figs, use in gimmicks in field of unproven dirt milers.
#4 UNBOUNDED MOVEMENT (4-1) One to beat if recent form carries over on surface switch.
Race Summary MARY’S REWARD, a four-time beaten favorite at odds-on, finally broke through with a 6F sprint victory from post 10. She finished between two next-out winners in her previous one-mile test and worked 5F in 1:00-1/5 since her last start. Bet to win and place and play 6-1 and 6-4 exactas.

            Race 8 - Claiming - 9.0f on the Turf. Purse: $76000 Class Rating: 92

FOR THREE YEAR OLDS AND UPWARD WHICH HAVE NEVER WON TWO RACES. THREE YEAR OLDS, 120 LBS.; OLDER, 124 LBS. NON-WINNERS OF A RACE OVER A MILE ON THE TURF SINCE SEPTEMBER 29 ALLOWED 2 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $50,000.
            RECOMMENDED CHOICES
            # 5 STONEMONT REUNION 12/1
            # 6 CURVINO 6/1
            # 8 RULOOKINFORRAYRAY 12/1
STONEMONT REUNION is my pick especially at a long price. Should be carefully examined - I like the figures from the last contest. CURVINO - He has to be carefully examined given the competitive speed figures. Torres ought to be able to get this gelding to break out early for this race. RULOOKINFORRAYRAY - It's a good sign that Drury is using Moncada on this entrant. Drury has this gelding racing well and is a solid pick based on the very strong speed figs posted in route races recently.

              Race 7 - Claiming - 5.0f on the Dirt. Purse: $28000 Class Rating: 83

FOR ACCREDITED LA BRED FILLIES AND MARES THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD. THREE YEAR OLDS, 122 LBS.; OLDER, 124 LBS. NON-WINNERS OF A RACE SINCE SEPTEMBER 29 ALLOWED 2 LBS. A RACE SINCE AUGUST 29 ALLOWED 4 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $10,000
              RECOMMENDED CHOICES
              # 3 CUSTOM PUNCH 5/2
              # 6 CAJUN CATALINA 4/1
              # 7 SUZY DOLL'S READY 5/1
CUSTOM PUNCH is the best bet in this race. Handler boasts strong win figures at this distance and surface. Has competitive early pace and ought to fare solidly versus this group. With a decent 79 speed fig last time out, will clearly be a factor in this race. CAJUN CATALINA - Difficult to pass on this mare with Perez in the saddle. Has been running strongly lately and will probably be on the lead early on. SUZY DOLL'S READY - Must be considered here on the basis of the figures in the speed realm alone. A solid 85 avg Equibase class rating may give this mare a distinct class edge versus this group of animals.

                Penn National - Race #9 - Post: 9:37pm - Claiming - 8.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $12,000 Class Rating: 75

                Rating:

                #5 BLACKDIAMOND DINNY (ML=8/1)
                #4 UNBOUNDED MOVEMENT (ML=4/1)
                #7 THE FEISTY ONE (ML=5/2)

BLACKDIAMOND DINNY - Zip is always important in horse racing, but the lone speed horse is always dangerous. Handicapping information show this horse with 3 improving speed ratings. Corujo should be on a live one today. UNBOUNDED MOVEMENT - Rojas comes to race again after getting to know the filly in the last event. This filly is in nice form, having run a good race on October 14th, finishing third. The 80 latest race speed fig looks good on paper. This thoroughbred has increased her speed ratings from a fig of 23 to 77 to 80 in a row. THE FEISTY ONE - I'm optimistic this filly will run well today. Last work was 2nd fastest of the day, which tells me she's sharp right now. This filly is in first-rate form right now. Finished third last time around the track and comes back quickly.

                Vulnerable Contenders: #6 MARY'S REWARD (ML=3/1), #9 PADRINO'S GOLD (ML=9/2),

MARY'S REWARD - Granted the last race was good, finishing first. The lack of any recent activity raises some concerns though. Will be tough for this horse to beat this bunch off of that last speed rating. Not likely to improve enough to run a figure close enough to today's class rating, so put her on the questionable challengers list. PADRINO'S GOLD - The effort last out on October 18th probably won't hold up against stiffer competition when they turn for home.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Have to go with #5 BLACKDIAMOND DINNY on the win end if we get at least 7/2 odds
                EXACTA WAGERS: Box [4,5]

Mahoning Valley Race Course - Race #5 - Post: 2:07pm - Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $14,600 Class Rating: 72

                  Rating:

                  #4 COOL COUPLE (ML=6/1)
                  #3 SAILINGTHEISLANDS (ML=15/1)

COOL COUPLE - Rode this horse on October 6th and Houghton is yet again in the irons in this race. That last drill tells me this gelding is set for a top performance. SAILINGTHEISLANDS - Mahan drops him down to this level. You don't need too much more data to think this one is in a good spot at this level. This gelding is very reliable, frequently finishing in the money. This rider and conditioner have a favorable ROI when they are put together. That recent bullet 48.8 work shows that this gelding is ready for a top performance today.

                  Vulnerable Contenders: #9 PRINSIPITO (ML=2/1), #1 QUARANTINO (ML=7/2), #8 DAYTONA GOLD (ML=4/1),

PRINSIPITO - Pace makes the race. Difficult for this early speedball to be able to handle the pace pressure from the rest of this bunch. QUARANTINO - In the last race this mount finished fourth. Doesn't look good for his chances this time out. Tough to put your cash on the win end of any horse that finishes second and third as frequently as this participant does. DAYTONA GOLD - When any horse improves so much on a sloppy track, I have to be a little shy about him next time.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: #4 COOL COUPLE to win at post-time odds of 5/2 or better
