Johnny Burke: All My Bets | Sha Tin | October 30, 2025

    October 29, 2025 | By Johnny Burke

A special All-Weather showcase is upon us at Sha Tin to warm things up ahead of the Breeders’ Cup action. Eight races are carded in Hong Kong with each one being run on the synthetic surface, which Hong Kong regulars will recognize is a stark departure from the turf-laden circuit’s standard programming. Let’s take a look at the day and see if we can find some strong contenders who will translate to the All-Weather surface.

    Helpful Resources

    Sha Tin – October 30
HKJC Resource Page – Free PPs, Pace Projections, Workout Videos, Weather https://racing.hkjc.com/racing/infor...se=ST&RaceNo=1

    Race 1 | 1600M | Class 5
    Win – #4 COURIER MAGIC
    Grade: B

Notes: The card opens with a Class 5 mile on the All-Weather surface, and I’m turning to a runner who is lightly raced on the synthetic course but who is coming into the race in solid form. COURIER MAGIC has been winless in his five and six-year-old seasons thus far, but showed a strong second-place run in his last outing and seems to be rounding into shape fit for these Class 5 races. In addition to his speed figures, what sells me on this runner is his sire’s output on the All-Weather course. SAVABEEL (AUS) has a 10.26% win rate all-time as a sire over the course with an average winning distance of just over seven furlongs. While those numbers may not jump off the screen, when compared to most of the sires in the nearly all-turf Hong Kong circuit it’s a sign of a horse decently bred to make the surface change. At just 4/1 on the Morning Line, we aren’t making our year with this one, but we could have a good chance at opening the day on a positive note.

    Race 3 | 1200M | Class 4
    Win - #2 NEW POWER
    Grade: A

Notes: While I’m already sick of the Christmas jingles and decorations taking over in October, NEW POWER at 11/1 feels like an early present from St. Nick himself. My power figures have this horse as the most highly-rated in the field by a relatively wide margin. This five-year-old gelding was sired by SWISS ACE (NZ) who has strong a 15.15% win rate on the synthetic course at an average distance of right about six furlongs. Britney Wong gets the mount and has shown some serious skill navigating her All-Weather races, plus she gets a five-pound handicap. With a price like this, I’m more than happy to base my day on this opinion.

    Race 5 | 1200M | Class 4
    Win - #3 VULCANUS
    Grade: B

Notes: Since finding his stride as a sprinter, VULCANUS has finished top-two in nineteen tries at six furlongs. In ten starts on the all-weather surface, he has finished top-two in half of his tries. His start to this season hasn’t been ideal, but he’s coming into this race in decent form having run some solid speed figures against tough competition. Switching back to the synthetic track, I like his chances at 15/2 on the Morning Line and think if he’s anything close to that at post time he’ll be worth a couple bucks to win.

    Race 6 | 1200M | Class 4
    Quinella Box – 2,3,6,12
    Grade: C

Notes: This race was hard to make heads or tails of, but sometimes that means we have an opportunity to bank on unpredictability and capture a huge price. My speed ratings have #2 PRESTIGE RICKY and #3 SEA CHARIOT as being woefully underrated by the oddsmakers in Hong Kong. At 26/1 and 52/1 respectively, I think either one has more than a puncher’s chance at crashing a top-two finish. By boxing two of the chalkier options alongside these longshots, we can take advantage of both the logical outcome and cover the potential for a month-making finish. Sometimes, when playing on numbers, you have to trust your process. This is a time where the art of making a bet meets the science of creating these speed figures, and I’m hoping things get as chaotic as possible for a massive boost to my Breeders’ Cup bankroll.
    Good luck!

      Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

      Del Mar - Race #1
#3 Medici He showed some pace and stayed on well in that turf debut last out, and the guy who beat him that day came back to land a Grade III and is entered to go in tomorrow's Breeders' Cup Juvenile turf. Nothing clever here, and the price probably reflects that, but I think you're supposed to be able to lean on him.
#2 Luck Lucky He's a logical alternative with a decent debut showing overseas, and he goes for a top team while not meeting a whole lot of serious form on paper outside of the top choice.
#5 Kid Charlemagne Lots of respect for anything this team sends in, and he's got enough positional pace to find a good spot into the first turn. One of the logical ones.
Race Summary It's Medici's race to lose after a really solid run last out when trying turf and two turns for the first time. Doesn't appear to be anything like Stark Contrast in here, so I'm guessing something like his last will do the trick.
      Del Mar - Race #7
#1 Bodi Zafa His form didn't go anywhere good after the decent Cinema run at Santa Anita in May, but I wonder if he can get back to something like that today, which might be enough to make him a sneaky player at an OK price.
#6 Friendly Confines He finished up well and showed a bit of a new dimension with that rally, and he brings some reasonable upside in the second start off the bench. Think he's going to be tough.
#3 Hiding in Honduras Wouldn't be surprised to see him land a piece here while trying turf. The pedigree is there, and he looked good going short on synthetic footing at first asking. Wildcard with a big class ask.
Race Summary Bodi Zafa should be a solid number on the board with a couple dull runs on his page, but he ran into some quality players in the two- and three-back tries, and I'm hoping a bounce-back effort puts him in the picture.
      Del Mar - Race #9
#10 Resolve Think you can go a few different ways in this spot, and while I don't really trust her a whole lot, the better tries on her page stack up well enough to make her competitive. One of the ones at a midrange price after chasing a decent winner last out.
#4 Take Another Card Wouldn't argue too hard with anyone leaning this way and hoping that the quality line from stakes company back in March will transfer OK off the layoff today. Price probably gets short.
#2 The Mizen Queen Honest finishing form from her so far through two starts in the States, and she seems as likely as anyone to land this. One of the ones to consider if the price is interesting enough.
Race Summary Resolve is one of the interesting players here in a fun spot to close the day. Her last was decent enough in a solid race, and I think she might get overlooked a little bit with some hit-or-miss form.

        Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

        Woodbine - Race #1
#9 NOYZEE GIRL (3-1) Running out of chances, deserves one more off troubled trip for higher tag.
#6 DANCIN MARY MARIE (8-1) Improved numbers with blinkers while facing several follow-up winners.
#8 NAUGHTY DESTINY (5-2) Four-time beaten fave this year will take some catching on cutback to 6F.
Race Summary NOYZEE GIRL spotted the field several lengths after she was impeded at the break, but she gathered momentum on the turn and finished well in mid-track. She finished in the money at three sprint distances in four starts prior to that at boxcar odds. She’s worth a win and place bet on the class drop. Also play a 6,9/6,8,9/ALL trifecta.
        Woodbine - Race #2
#9 MOTION GRANTED (3-1) Could be off and gone with an alert start from outside post.
#6 FUN FELLA (12-1) Gets class relief after overland trip, fits on best rally, price attached.
#2 STARVIN (7-2) Rallied from clouds into photo-finish view, won through DQ in first try on turf.
Race Summary MOTION GRANTED returns to the scene of his last victory a year ago, but he just missed in the same spot two months ago and can carry his speed the distance in this field. Bet to win and place and play 9-2 and 9-6 exactas.
        Woodbine - Race #5
#1 CRUCIAL TAUNT (6-1) Won easily under the same conditions when claimed two starts ago.
#6 SECRET THREAT (5-2) Rallied for share in three straight for $25k, low 70 Beyers translate well.
#4 GROOT (9-5) Overcame bad start in victory but couldn’t do it a second time at the $40k level.
Race Summary CRUCIAL TAUNT bypassed the nw/2 condition when he rallied to win going away in the same spot two back. He moved too early in a fast-paced follow-up off the claim, now draws the rail as the co-lightweight in the field with Moran summoned to ride. Bet to win and place and play a 1-ALL exacta.

              # 9 KING GEORGE WAY 9/2
              # 4 SALTO ANGEL 7/2
BABA'S BABY BOY looks very strong to best this field. Could beat this group of horses given the 60 speed figure recorded in his last outing. Has been running in the most competitive company of the field recently. Expect a much stronger performance with the drop. KING GEORGE WAY - Has to be considered - I like the numbers from the last race. Rivera has a sound 21 percent win rate with entries running at this distance and surface. SALTO ANGEL - Has been travelling quite well in races of this distance, going 1 for 2 under similar conditions. Diaz will almost certainly be able to get this gelding to break out sharply in this race.

                # 3 CHUPAPI MUNYAYO 7/2
My selection for this race is TONTERIA. If you look closely, this one has some longshot possibilities. Have to look at solely on class, with some of the strongest class figures of this group. I like the jock on this gelding - competitive chance to win the contest. INCREDIBLE SHOT - Could provide positive gains based on quite good recent speed figures with an average of 91. Garnered a strong speed fig in the latest race. Can run another good one in this affair. CHUPAPI MUNYAYO - Has garnered sound Speed Figures in dirt sprint races in the past. Very good choice to take this race going in a dirt sprint.

Belmont at the Big A - Race #3 - Post: 2:10pm - Optional Claiming - 6.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $82,000 Class Rating: 98

                  Rating:

                  #3 WHAT'S UP BRO (ML=7/2)
                  #7 NATIONAL IDENTITY (ML=6/5)
                  #1 STEWIE (ML=6/1)

WHAT'S UP BRO - Handal moves this horse here to Belmont at the Big A from Saratoga. Looking at the horse's PPs, he has shown the ability to win on different ovals. I like when a pony has dropped in class at least five class rating points like this one did last time around the track and then runs against a similar field right back. Handal must've found the right class level. This mount is in great demand coming off two claims in his last two starts. Don't overlook this gelding in your gambling today. NATIONAL IDENTITY - This colt is almost always in the money. I predict a perfect trip. Stalk the pace, and strike on the turn. Shipped in on Sep 20th to take the money here. Take right back again. STEWIE - This gelding should give a good showing of himself in today's affair.

Vulnerable Contenders: #4 YO BANANA BOY (ML=9/2), #5 ON THE HILL (ML=6/1),

YO BANANA BOY - Oddsmaker's morning line of 9/2 make this horse a pass by my standards. ON THE HILL - Difficult to wager on this mount today. Make him show you something in a sprint event before you wager on him in a race of 6 1/2 furlongs.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Have to go with #3 WHAT'S UP BRO on the win end if we get at least 7/2 odds

                    Hawthorne - Race #7 - Post: 4:38pm - Claiming - 6.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $11,250 Class Rating: 84

                    Rating:

                    #13 DICK BEST (ML=8/1)
                    #7 RED MOSCATO (ML=9/2)

DICK BEST - Last workout was the second fastest of the day. Unquestionably on edge for a good one today. RED MOSCATO - Sprinters that come back to the races quickly are generally good plays.

                    Vulnerable Contenders: #1 SHACKLEFORD STRONG (ML=9/5), #14 COOLTHING (ML=6/1), #8 SHAMAN SEZ (ML=6/1),

SHACKLEFORD STRONG - Today's event is 6 1/2 furlongs. Hasn't finished in the money in a short distance race in the last couple of months. Not the best of signs. COOLTHING - The fifth place finish position in the last race was not the greatest. Common speed rating last out at Fairmount Park at 6 furlongs. Don't believe this questionable contender will improve too much in today's race. You figure that this equine is going to win today just because he's always close. Just doesn't get the job done frequently. SHAMAN SEZ - He showed not much at all in the last race. Unlikely that the rating he notched on October 9th will hold up in this race.
