Brian W. Spencer: Del Mar BC Undercard Plays

    November 1, 2025 | By Brian Spencer

With Races 4-12 on the Breeders' Cup side and covered in the 1/ST Breeders' Cup Wager Guide, I'll focus on the 3 preliminary races on the Del Mar card. Early first post of 1:05 pm ET / 10:05 am PT, so get ready!

    Del Mar - Race #1

#6 Kansas Cat: He has been knocking on the door all year and will eventually get over the top in a spot like this, and he might offer another decent price to find out if today is the day.

#5 Monterey Bay: He has been an honest enough finisher and has taken his track with him through some good tries on a couple of different surfaces. Feel like he's most likely to end up underneath, but he looks like one of the ones.

#12 Twirling Point: Dropper has been in a lot of tougher spots, and he probably has a mild excuse for the two-back run when racing off the bench in a pretty deep allowance spot.

Race Summary: Lots of good opinions and thoughts out there on the BC races elsewhere, so I'll focus my plays in this space on the early races on the card to try to find a bankroll builder or two. Most interesting play on the BC portion of the card will be White Abarrio in the Dirt Mile. Kansas Cat has some appeal at what figures to be another midrange price, and he should get a great spying trip from up close. Tough to trust, but something like the 6/1 ML would make the risk worth it for me.

    Del Mar - Race #2

#5 Sir Rocket: Really like a lot of his recent form, and he looked pretty good winning on the main track here earlier this year. Think he's in the mix at an OK number.

#1 Ghost of Midnight: Reliable late runner only has losses on his page to some pretty nice ones, and his better stuff would probably make him a handful. No arguments from me.

#12 Red Flag: He has faced a lot of tougher groups than this along the way, and he at least showed a little bit of life in that deep allowance try here in August. Could land it.

Race Summary: Sir Rocket has been riding some good form and showed up with an OK effort in stakes company last time out. He fits well here and could get the right kind of midpack finishing run. No clue what to do with #14 Bostontonian here, but he's perfect from four starts and has attacking pace from the outside.

    Del Mar - Race #3

#5 Medoro: Honest runner is always right there, and she should find a perfect spying spot with this crew. Price should be more interesting this time around in a fun spot.

#2 Deep Satin: She hasn't missed by much while searching for her first graded stakes score, and I liked her last try in Grade I company. Better stuff would do.

#3 Special Wan: She's another with some class and fairly honest form, but I feel like she's going to get overbet just a bit in here.

Race Summary: Medoro has reliable form and seems about as likely as any of these to land it, and I think a couple of the other logical players will help keep the price fair.

Al Cimaglia: Meadowlands Late Pick 4 Analysis

      November 1, 2025 | By Al Cimaglia

The Meadowlands has a 14-race card featuring the Kindergarten Series Finals for 2-year-olds. The 0.50 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 10, it has a $50,000 guaranteed pool with a 15% take out, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

      Race 10 (10:05 PM EDT)

2-Southwind Gendry (3-1)-Classy veteran comes off a sharp gate to wire score. Bumps up but knows how to dance with his kind and looks like a double up possibility.
3-El Rey (3-1)-Comes off a poor performance in the BC Final but was overmatched. Fits much better here and getting Dexter Dunn between the pipes won't hurt.
6-Borninlockdown GB (4-1)-Raced evenly in a needed start after shipping in from PcD. Draws well, comes right back in sequence, and has won 2 of 3 at M1. Scott Zeron should have the 5-year-old in a position to win turning for the wire.

      Race 11 (10:30 PM EDT)

1-Car Keys (8-1)-Stayed inside and raced evenly in the 1st race since 9-12. Fits with this crew and gets a ++ driver change in Dexter Dunn. Will look for the Chris Ryder trainee to be forwardly placed throughout.
4-On Heir (4-1)-Took the long way around in the BC Final. Getting hung the mile sealed the fate of the longshot. Like the one above, should relish the company. Has won 2 of 3 at M1 and finished 2nd in the other start. Best to respect, AMac should work a cozy trip and be there at the wire.
6-Prtynproud Hanover (8-1)-Took 6-weeks off and put in an even effort against this kind. Will take a swing at this price. Gets a positive driver change in Yannick Gingras, and he posts 23% winners when steering for the Joe B barn.

      Race 12 (10:55 PM EDT)

1-Ollie's Ztam (8-1)-Comes off a sharp gate to wire score now bumps up to the next TM level. Not sure how much the move up will matter against this crew. Should be a main player if comes back with the same kind of effort. Winning 3 straight is not out of the questions with a smooth steer.
6-Like A Shadow (4-1)-Won from the 10-hole then stepped up to face this kind and took the lead down the lane but faded to finish 2nd. Beaten chalk is only 1-19 this year and has only 1 win at M1 but that came 2 back. Should get a top of the stack trip again, this is 3rd race after a sick scratch, and recent form is too good to ignore.

      Race 13 (11:20 PM EDT)

1-Ritchie Alpha (3-1)-Hasn't hit the board in 4 races at the Big M. But drops to a soft spot and gets a new set of hands in Yannick Gingras. The driver change could be a winning difference, and an aggressive steer should be coming.
8-JK Black Gold (5/2)-Jason Bartlett steers for trainer Jeff Cullipher. When those two combine it isn't always a picture taking opportunity, but they do post 45% winners. The 5-year-old knows how to win on a big track and has captured 3 of 12 at M1. Drops to a spot to shine and could be tough to beat with a smooth trip.

      $1 Late Pick 4

      2,3,6/1,4,6/1,6/1,8
      Total Bet=$36

          Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

          Laurel Park - Race #1
#7 AWESOME McKINZIE (5-1) Made two moves on rail from far back, held off drifting leader to prevail.
#4 SLEEPWALKER (6-5) Towers over the field on paper but hasn’t won in the last 18 months.
#9 MY DEAR ANTONIA (8-1) Should sit good stalking trip if she avoids another troubled start.
Race Summary AWESOME McKINZIE rallied from far back upon exiting the Maiden Special Weight ranks to win at this distance. She advanced quickly on the rail on the backstretch, steadied in traffic, then regrouped with another rail surge to prevail over the drifting leader in deep stretch. Bet to win and place and play a 4-7 exacta box.
          Laurel Park - Race #2
#6 CENTSAMILLA (5-2) Resilient on lead when favorites came calling, pair of bullet works locally.
#5 GRANUAILE (2-1) Tries to carry over much improved form from turf to dirt, sheds 5 pounds.
#3 FABIA (9-2) Rallied for second in same spot in lone 6F try while the 1-to-5 favorite faltered.
Race Summary CENTSAMILLA shook a duel on the turn, then gamely held off the two favorites to prevail in a $25,000 maiden claimer at Delaware. She shows a pair of :36-and-change bullet workouts at Laurel Park since that maiden win three months ago. Bet to win and place and play 6-3 and 6-5 exactas.
          Laurel Park - Race #3
#4 ROCK TUNE (15-1) Improved, finished in the money in 10 of 16 starts, makes turf debut.
#8 LAZY DAYS (6-1) Blew clear stretch lead, can rate from better post in third start of cycle.
#5 BEYOND QUESTION (9-2) Didn’t duplicate top effort as the beaten fave against similar rivals.
Race Summary Take a cue from Granuaile (2nd race), who was disqualified from a win against several contenders in this race. ROCK TUNE wasn’t in that race but she won a MSW sprint on Presque Isle Down’s synthetic track, then gave a decent account of herself in a Pennsylvania-bred allowance. She should get a solid pace to rally into in her turf debut. Bet to win and place and play a 4-5-8 exacta box.

                Laurel - Race #11 - Post: 5:24pm - SO - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $24,000 Class Rating: 90

                Rating:

                #1 NIGHT PREACHER (ML=4/1)
                #8 RAPIDITY (ML=10/1)

NIGHT PREACHER - Looks like the lone speed of the race. Should be tough on the front-end. Personally, I wouldn't worry about where he finished in his last race (fourth). Should rebound in this event, with some pretty good odds. RAPIDITY - When Carrasco and Shankle join forces on equines the return on investment has been wonderful at +190.

                Vulnerable Contenders: #4 MR. BOGAN (ML=2/1), #6 NOLA BOSS (ML=7/2), #5 DADDY YANKEE (ML=7/2),

MR. BOGAN - This entrant will most likely be at the back of the pack as this group crosses the wire. NOLA BOSS - The speed ratings are going downward. I'm not investing on this entrant off of that trend. The finish of eighth in the last race shows me that this horse may be going out of form. Finished eighth in his most recent race with a most unsatisfactory speed rating. When I look at today's class figure, it would take an improved performance to triumph after that in this bunch. DADDY YANKEE - Hard to wager on any horse to turn things around if there is no reward to taking the shot.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: #1 NIGHT PREACHER is going to be the play if we are getting 7/5 or better

                  RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                  # 2 FORTHELONGHAUL 5/2
                  # 5 BORDER VIGIL 6/1
                  # 4 BRODY'S TREASURE 9/2
FORTHELONGHAUL supports the bet in here. Has to be given consideration based on the very strong Equibase Speed Figure earned in the last race. A solid 83 avg Equibase class rating may give this gelding a distinct class edge versus this group. Is a strong contender based on numbers put up recently under today's conditions. BORDER VIGIL - Boasts sound Equibase Speed Figures on average overall when measured up against the rest of this group of animals. This gelding has to be considered just off the earnings per start in dirt sprint races alone. BRODY'S TREASURE - It's a good signal that Hibdon is using Cardoso on this one. Looks respectable for the conditions of this affair today, showing solid numbers in dirt sprint races recently.

Belmont at the Big A - Race #5 - Post: 1:55pm - Maiden Optional Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $70,000 Class Rating: 71

                    Rating:

                    #5 SOUTH PHILLY SLIDE (ML=6/1)
                    #10 BASHFUL BABY (ML=3/1)
                    #8 SCORCH (ML=8/1)

SOUTH PHILLY SLIDE - It looks like Santana had to be in the know about this filly on September 21st when riding her for the initial time. Back on again today. In the last race, ran the last quarter in less than 25 ticks. A pretty good sign she can close well, and should be right there at the end today. If you review the PP's for this horse, you'll see she has recorded the top speed fig at the distance and surface. A repeat performance right here in this race and this horse has a superb chance to win. BASHFUL BABY - I really like sprinters that make a quick turnaround. The jockey/trainer tandem of Rodriguez and Clement has a strong return on investment together. I like that most recent outing on October 22nd at Belmont at the Big A where she ran second. Came home fast last time around the track at Belmont at the Big A. That type of move bodes well for her chances right here in this race. SCORCH - Faced tougher last time out at Belmont at the Big A. Based on Equibase class ratings, this is a weaker group, so I will put this thoroughbred on my list of contenders. Coming off a fifth place finish at Belmont at the Big A, some may skip this horse. I'm not. She just missed hitting the show spot, and has decent M/L odds today.

                    Vulnerable Contenders: #7 BLACK ROSE (ML=4/1), #13 KAY ROAD (ML=9/2), #14 ALMA'S LAW (ML=5/1),

BLACK ROSE - In the last affair this steed finished eighth. Doesn't look good for her chances today. It looks like too much early zip is entered in this race. This speedball will almost certainly get baked on the front end. KAY ROAD - Don't figure that this less than sharp equine is worth 9/2 in this race. ALMA'S LAW - Difficult to wager on at 5/1 odds after the last two efforts. Difficult to wager on any questionable contender in a short distance race if she hasn't hit the board in a sprint in the last two months.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #5 SOUTH PHILLY SLIDE to win if we can get at least 9/2 odds

                      # 4 CQ COYAME JESSY 6/1
                      # 2 FIRE POWWER 5/1
                      # 9 POUR ME A DRINKK 7/5
CQ COYAME JESSY has a very strong shot to take this race. Lately Villalobos has provided bettors with a very good winning percentage with horses racing in short races. Could best this group based on the Equibase speed fig - 91 - of his last affair. FIRE POWWER - Looks quite good to be on the lead at the first call. Ran a strong last race. POUR ME A DRINKK - His 79 average has this gelding with among the top speed figs in this contest. Must be given consideration given the class of races run recently.
