Detroit Red Wings at St. Louis Blues (-115, 5.5)

It’s not uncommon to see a team get on a bit of a run following a coaching change. That’s exactly what happened to the Blues when Ken Hitchcock climbed behind the bench.

St. Louis went 8-1-2 in its first 11 games after giving Davis Payne the boot, but teams are starting to get a better feel for what the Blues are trying to do now.

"We're going to get a push," Hitchcock told reporters. "You can surprise a team, but we're now playing a second wave. When we start playing the Chicago's and Detroit's again, now we'll have a look. They'll be ready for us. They won't be surprised by our game."

St. Louis has been a lot better defensively since Hitchcock took over and should be in the mix at the end of the year as long as the offense holds up. The Wings finally gave starting goaltender Jimmy Howard a break after 17 consecutive starts on Sunday and Ty Conklin couldn’t get it done in a 4-2 loss to Colorado.

Howard should be back in goal for this one.

        Pick: Red Wings

Colorado Avalanche at Vancouver Canucks (-205, 5.5)

Could the Vancouver Canucks really trade Roberto Luongo?

Of course, rumors of the club cutting ties with its high-priced netminder have surfaced from time to time over the past few years, but it’s worth considering with the way Cory Schneider is playing.

With bigwigs gathering in Pebble Beach, the Ottawa Sun is reporting that Vancouver has shopped the veteran netminder but that no team has been willing to take on his $5.3-million annual contract that runs until 2021-22. Plus, there’s that small issue of his no-trade clause making this speculation questionable at best.

However, all this talk isn’t good for a dressing room. Luongo is supposed to be the No. 1 guy and hasn’t played like it, but maybe this competition from Schneider will finally get Luongo going.

No word on who starts yet for Tuesday’s game though the over is likely the best bet here. Vancouver has scored at least four goals in four of its last five and seven of the last 11 meetings between the two clubs have played over as well.

        Pick: Over

He also has 16 catches for 125 yards and a score.

            GAME OF THE DAY

Missouri Tigers at Villanova Wildcats (6.5, 148.5)

            NOTABLE QUOTABLE

"I usually don't look ahead but I thought Marshall might be better than anybody we've played, so I think that will be a difficult thing for our players now to turn around this thing by Tuesday and get ready." – Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim about Tuesday’s matchup with Marshall after downing Florida 72-68 Friday night. The Orange are pegged as 14.5-point favorites.

            TIPS AND NOTES

Marquette starting point guard Junior Cadougan is expected back in the lineup Tuesday against Washington after serving a one-game suspension for violating team rules. Cadougan sat out 61-54 victory over Wisconsin and will be a big boost to the lineup. He’s averaging 7.7 points and 6.3 assists per game for the Golden Eagles, who are averaging 84.1 points per game. Marquette is set as a 6-point favorite.

The Boston Bruins are expected to start backup goaltender Tuukka Rask Tuesday at Winnipeg. The Bruins are in the middle of a stretch of five games in eight days and are coming off an impressive 3-1 win over Pittsburgh that saw starter Tim Thomas stand on his head with 45 saves. Rask is working on a 2.25 goals against average and a .921 save percentage this season. Boston is set as a -150 road favorite.

Utah has indefinitely suspended starting point guard Josh Watkins for conduct detrimental to the team. First-year coach Larry Krystkowiak said Watkins would not be able to take part in team activities until he reaches certain goals. Watkins has scored in double digits in 13 straight games, including 11 points in an 82-52 loss to Fresno State on Saturday. Utah, set to play in the inaugural Pac-12 season, is 1-6 and off to its worst start in school history.

              Preview: Detroit at St. Louis
              By Covers Staff

Detroit Red Wings at St. Louis Blues (-115, 5.5)

THE STORY: It has been a season of streaks for the Detroit Red Wings, who saw their stretch of seven consecutive wins come to a halt in Sunday's 4-2 loss at the Colorado Avalanche. If Detroit follows its season-long pattern, the Red Wings are staring at a second straight defeat when they visit the St. Louis Blues on Tuesday. Detroit has put together winning streaks of five, four and seven games wrapped around a pair of skids spanning six and two games. The Blues, on the other hand, are trying to avert their first three-game losing streak of the season after dropping their first two games in December. St. Louis, which closed out November with four wins in a row, is 8-2-3 since Ken Hitchcock took over as coach. Included in that stretch was a 2-1 home victory over the Red Wings on Nov. 15.

              TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, Versus, TSN2

ABOUT THE RED WINGS (16-8-1): Detroit gave up a shorthanded goal on the go-ahead tally in the loss to Colorado. The Wings were also forced to play shorthanded when red-hot Valtteri Filppula left the game in the first period when his shin was cut by a skate blade. He had scored five goals in his previous five games. Filppula needed stitches to close a small but deep cut. He didn’t practice Monday and his status for Tuesday’s game is unclear.

ABOUT THE BLUES (14-9-3): Left wing David Perron made a dramatic return to the lineup, scoring on his first shot to give St. Louis a 1-0 lead against Chicago. Perron had been sidelined for over a year because of a concussion. It went downhill from there as the Blackhawks dominated and halted goaltender Brian Elliott’s six-game winning streak. Perron’s contribution aside, scoring continues to plague the Blues, who haven’t tallied more than two goals in regulation for eight straight games.

              OVERTIME:

              1. Blues leading scorer Alex Steen has only one goal in 19 career games against the Wings, but it was the game-winner in last month’s matchup.

              2. Red Wings center Pavel Datsyuk is on a tear with six goals and eight assists in his last nine games. He has 62 points in 53 games against St. Louis.

PREDICTION: Red Wings 4, Blues 2.

Marshall Thundering Herd at Syracuse Orange (-14.5, 135)

THE STORY: Syracuse continues to roll despite off-court distractions hogging the front page of the sports section. The No. 3 Orange picked up their biggest win of the season when they defeated Florida 72-68 at home Friday. While Tuesday’s meeting with Marshall may look like a letdown spot, coach Jim Boeheim is very wary of the Thundering Herd. Marshall, picked to contend for the C-USA title, is coming off its first loss of the season - 70-68 to Ohio - and needs to get tougher inside if it wants to keep pace with Syracuse’s towering lineup. The Thundering Herd, who only go as tall as 6 feet 9 in the starting lineup, were outscored 45-30 in the paint versus the Bobcats.

                TV: 7 p.m., SNY, WSAZ-TV

ABOUT MARSHALL (5-1): The Thundering Herd already have a victory over a Big East opponent this season, knocking off Cincinnati 75-69 in overtime on Nov. 25. Against Ohio, Marshall got 57 of its total 68 points from the starting lineup, going four deep into the bench. Sophomore guard DeAndre Kane has done it all for the Herd, leading the team in scoring with 15.8 points per game while also averaging 5.6 rebounds and 3.3 assists.

ABOUT SYRACUSE (8-0): The Orange flexed their muscle in the backcourt with the win over No. 10 Florida, getting terrific production from guards Scoop Jardine and Brandon Triche who, not only combined for 36 points, but also had to keep up with speedy Gators guards Kenny Boynton and Erving Walker. Up front, the Orange are showing improved toughness around the basket. The frontcourt is made more for finesse, but forward C.J. Fair was aggressive on the glass, grabbing 11 rebounds off the bench against Florida. The Orange are missing muscle in the middle with the graduation of Rick Jackson.

                TIP-INS:

                1. Marshall coach Tom Herrion is all too familiar with the Carrier Dome. He was an assistant at Providence and Pittsburgh before taking over the Herd, compiling a 5-5 all-time mark versus the Orange.

                2. Marshall could get 6-foot-10 center Nigel Spikes back Tuesday. He’s been out after undergoing knee surgery in late September. Spikes’ size would be a major boost against a long and athletic Syracuse frontcourt.

                3. Before Syracuse’s four-point win over Florida, the Orange’s average margin of victory was 26 points through their first seven games.

Evansville Purple Aces at North Carolina Tar Heels (-25, 152.5)

THE STORY: North Carolina tries to bounce back from its crushing one-point loss at top-ranked Kentucky when it hosts Evansville. The No. 6 Tar Heels led by as many as nine in the first half and six in the second before the Wildcats rallied to win 73-72 in what might have been a Final Four preview. The Purple Aces have alternated wins and losses, most recently falling 70-68 in overtime at home to TCU. North Carolina won last year’s meeting 76-49 in Evansville as Tyler Zeller, an Indiana native who grew up 60 miles from Evansville’s campus, scored 18 points.

                TV: 7 p.m. ET, ESPNU

ABOUT EVANSVILLE (3-3): Junior swingman Colt Ryan, a preseason All-Missouri Valley Conference selection, scored 31 points against TCU and has scored in double digits in 15 straight games. He is averaging a team-high 19.7 points and 2.3 steals. The Purple Aces are weak on defense and on the glass. They give up 71.3 points per game (272nd nationally) and grab 31.0 rebounds per game (315th). They were picked to finish fifth in the MWC.

ABOUT NORTH CAROLINA (6-2): Zeller and Harrison Barnes scored 14 apiece in the loss to Kentucky. Barnes is shooting 48 percent and averaging a team-high 17.3 points. John Henson averages a double-double with 14.1 points and 10.5 rebounds. Freshman guard P.J. Hairston is hitting 48.6 percent from beyond the arc. The explosive Tar Heels ranks sixth nationally in assists (18.9), 13th in scoring (82.5), 15th in rebounds (41.5) and 31st in shooting (48.4 percent).

                TIP-INS:

                1. Coach Marty Simmons is 54-75 in five seasons at Evansville.

                2. Evansville is 30-128 in true road games over the past 12 years.

                3. North Carolina just completed a tough eight-day stretch in which it went 1-2 against three 2011 NCAA tournament teams: UNLV, Wisconsin and Kentucky.

                  Montreal Canadiens -155

Ordinarily, I would have no interest in backing a struggling team returning home from a west coast road trip, but in this particular case, I'm willing to make an exception.

The Canadiens built a little bit of momentum with Saturday's 2-1 win over the Kings in Los Angeles. It was the type of character win that can turn a team's fortunes.

Now comes another winnable game for the Habs, at home against a Blue Jackets squad that is at the tail-end of a four-game Canadian road swing.

Columbus' struggles this season have been well-documented. They have a league-low 17 points, and have notched only two victories in 13 tries away from home.

Blue Jackets fans (those few that are left) were calling for goaltender Steve Mason's head earlier this season. He got hurt and missed some time, and in his absence, backup Curtis Sanford was outstanding.

Now Mason is back on the bench in a backup role, and Sanford has suddenly regressed. In starting all three games on this trip, Sanford has given up 11 goals.

If there's one thing the Habs haven't had to worry much about, it's been their goaltending. Carey Price is having a fine season, posting a 2.23 goals against average and a .919 save percentage.

The Canadiens have won only four home games all season, but it's only a matter of time before they turn that record around. Note that they're averaging right around 2.7 goals per game on nearly 33 shots per contest at the Bell Centre this season. By contrast, the Blue Jackets are averaging 2.15 goals per game on the road, while giving up a whopping 4.1.

These two teams have met in each of the last three seasons, with the home team going a perfect 3-0. The last time they hooked up here in Montreal, the Habs skated to a 5-3 victory. I won't be surprised if we see a similar result on Tuesday. Take Montreal (5*).
