Al Cimaglia: Northfield Park Late Pick 4 Analysis

Northfield Park begins the week with a 15-race card. The $1.00 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 11. The sequence has a $10,000 guaranteed pool, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 11 (9:40 PM EDT)-

1-Mikado (9/2)-Beat this kind going gate to wire on 11-2. Using with the inside draw and could get the top or a pocket ride behind the program chalk (3) and double up.
3-Dry Creek Regal (2-1)-It should be 1-3 or 3-1 going into the opening turn and Aaron Merriman knows how to muscle his way to the top. Beaten favorite has a chance to make amends tonight.
9-Princessbythesea (4-1)-Shouldn't get away too far from the leaders and might be overlooked. This 3-year-old wins its share, has 4 pictures in 12 Nfld starts, and is a threat with the right trip.

Race 12 (10:02 PM EDT)

1-Think Of Galaxies (2-1)-Fits with this company and Dan Noble gets the call. He posts 50% winners when teamed up with the Corey Kreiser barn. Likes to race on the point and that should be the plan here.
4-Two Pistol Annie (3-1)-Has only 1 win in 12 races on an-off track, so going to toss the last start. Knows how to beat this kind and if the fractions are lively Keith Kash should be rolling hard down the lane.

Race 13 (10:24 PM EDT)

8-Jillian B Miki (7-1)-Merriman has some gate speed to use but not sure blasting out to land on the engine is going to happen. Could get a decent seat and then rally off cover. Will rely on this pilot to work a winning trip and hopefully the morning line price holds up.
9-Saulsbrook Mabel (3-1)-Has the ability to win despite the post draw but needs a sharp steer by Justine Irvine. Might get a break and be able to follow one of the inside trio and get a close-up seat. Doesn't have to lead every step of the way to win. But has to be close to the leader turning for the wire and may need to come 1st over.

Race 14 (10:46 PM EDT)

2-Ali Sweet Cake (9/2)-Faded in last on a sloppy track to finish a beaten 2nd. Will look for better, missed a start before the last race and now comes back in sequence. Did race wide last time and a cozier trip is a good possibility.
6-Bean Town Girl (6-1)-This filly also faded down the lane in the slop in its last start. The price is right to take a swing and could beat this crew if the Schillaci 3-year-old is driven aggressively when the wings fold. Is only 1-18 on the year but that win came 2 back at Nfld, and many in this field have issues with taking pictures.

Del Mar - Race #3

#2 Smoovin Saturday	Get a look at him on the tote and track, but he's been working forwardly enough for this and has the pedigree to find the trip.
#1 Wasted Warrior	Wouldn't be surprised at all to see him move forward at second asking while getting around two turns, and he might get a bit overlooked on the board on the rise out of the claiming ranks.
#5 John Metcalfe	He makes some sense if he can transfer that last one back over to the main track where he didn't have any success in those first two starts. Giving him the benefit of the doubt here.
Race Summary	Smoovin Saturday looks ready enough today, and I am not totally sold on a couple of the logical players with experience -- even if they're competitive on paper.

Del Mar - Race #5

#1 Pretty Cecy	Absolutely a swing here in a race with much more established form, but I liked how she looked winning last time out against a much softer group, and I could see her finding a dreamy kind of spot while tucked on the fence as the quicker players settle early scores.
#9 Artisma	She's one of the obvious ones with some classy tries on her page and a couple of decent recent efforts, but I worry that she's going to get bet and has been just flattening a bit late in her races. Maybe -- but not likely at a 'maybe' kind of price on the board.
#5 Magnificat	Considered her on top here and wouldn't argue with anyone landing here. She looked good scoring last out and should find herself in a really dreamy spot while getting towed into the pace.
Race Summary	Pretty Cecy needs much better to score today, but she's not totally exposed through just two starts and might find herself in a great spot in a race with a couple more committed early players.

Del Mar - Race #8

#5 Heaven's Bolt	She stopped and was taken out of it in that Grade II try last time out, but the waters are not nearly as deep this time around, and she might get a great trip while turning back. Not sure we've gotten a true read on her, and the price might be fair to take that chance we'll get it today.
#3 Himika	She's probably supposed to handle these -- she's a Grade III winner who just cruised against some of the same faces she'll see today. No arguments at all here other than that she's likely to be about 50 cents on the dollar.
#4 Revera	She has only been beaten by a couple of really sharp players throughout her three starts, but unfortunately one of them lines up just inside of her again today. Think the ceiling is high enough to win this if a couple things go right, but she's got almost five lengths to turn on Himika for starters.
Race Summary	Heaven's Bolt is a question mark -- she looked good in the debut win but turned in a press-and-stop run in Grade II company last time out. Going to draw a line through that one and hope she's ready to fire a big one at this trip to get the best of the chalk.

Ought to come out strong - I have liked the way this colt has moved quickly to the front end recently. Earned a sound Equibase Speed Fig in the latest race. Can run another good one in this contest. KVN DULCE CORONA - This pony has to be bet upon at the expected high odds. Has performed soundly lately in short races, posting a nifty 74 avg speed figure. DIABOLICAL CLYDE - His 76 average has this horse with among the best speed figures for this event. With a reliable 73 average Equibase Speed Fig at the distance, seems well suited for today's competition.

POOKIE - This filly is in superb condition right now. Finished fourth in the last race and comes back rapidly. Coming off a fourth place finish at Belmont at the Big A, some may skip this horse. I'm not. She just missed hitting the show spot, and has decent morning line odds today. SIYOUNI FLASH (FR) - This jockey and trainer have a beneficial ROI when they are put together. I like the piece of information that this filly's last rating, 94, is tops in this field. CYNANE - This trainer brings horses to the grass in great shape, winning over 20 percent of the time under similar conditions. This pony coming off a strong effort in the last thirty days is a contender in my book. Came home fast last time out at Belmont at the Big A. That type of move bodes well for her chances in this event. This filly is obviously on the improve with speed figures of 83, 85, 87 last three out.

Vulnerable Contenders: #14 PURLOIN (ML=5/2), #15 WALK WITH ME (ML=7/2), #9 TRAIL OF GOLD (ML=9/2),

PURLOIN - Mediocre speed rating last time out at Belmont at the Big A at 1 mile. Don't feel this mount will improve too much in today's event. WALK WITH ME - I have some doubts when a horse has front bandages added in the last race. Earned a run-of-the-mill speed figure in the last race in the Jack Betta Be Rite on October 13th. Not probable to see an improved performance off of that rating. TRAIL OF GOLD - A bit of a lackluster try when this filly finished fourth. The speed rating last race out doesn't fit very well in this race when I look at the class figure of today's event. Mark this horse as a vulnerable competitor.

NOROOMFORMISCHIEF - This filly registered a fig in her last event which probably isn't good enough in today's race. KILLA SALLY - Doesn't look inspiring to me after the lack of any type of closing ability on October 10th. LIGHT MY FLAME - Earned a pedestrian speed rating last time around the track in a Maiden Special race on Oct 22nd. Improbable to see an improved performance off of that figure.
