Jeremy Plonk: Fair Grounds Opening Day Thursday Spot Plays

    November 19, 2025 | By Jeremy Plonk

Fair Grounds opens its 2025-’26 racing season Thursday and once again 1/ST BET and Xpressbet open the Cornucopia of Cash. Another Bet $100, Get $10 offer will be in play for the Fair Grounds card, which gets underway at 1:45 pm ET. Forecast is for temps nearing 80 degrees and mostly sunny skies.

    Fair Grounds | Race 3 | 2:45 pm ET

#3 Butcher Holler (8-1 morning line odds) represents trainer Keith Bourgeois, who has been a tremendously fast starter to the Fair Grounds meetings the past 2 years. He’s won 6 of 19 November starts locally in 2023-’24, popping $24, $45 and $56 prices in that span. Two of those huge prices came via Delta Downs like Butcher Holler, who is in excellent form currently. Win bet #3. Daily Double 3-12 to our next play.

    Fair Grounds | Race 4 | 3:15 pm ET

#12 South Side (12-1 morning line odds) is the second of 2 Keith Bourgeois trainees on the card (see FG meet-opening stats above in Race 3 comments). This one runs second off the layoff and can be excused for the dirt performance last out. He’s back on the FG turf, where he won at 27-1 to open last year’s meet at a big price in a similar form cycle under Mitch Murrill and reunites. Win-place bet #12.

    Fair Grounds | Race 7 | 4:45 pm ET

#5 Quick Kiss (3-1 morning line odds) looks to continue an early tear trainer Larry Rivelli set forth at Fair Grounds last year. He won with 4 of his first 5 two-year-olds at the meet (2 of 3 with debut runners like this). Quick Kiss is a well-meant $200,000 purchase who figures to be well put together given the more modest pedigree for that price. Win bet #5.

      Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

      Fair Grounds - Race #8
#10 Juris Doctor He's got some pace to play with from the wide draw, and there isn't a ton of serious early speed lined up. Perfect first-jump kind of run today.
#4 Savion Not sure he's offering the 8/1 ML price for a top team with a good debut score on the page, but he looked good that day and should be able to carry that kind of run around two turns.
#5 Arthur's Court He's another who has a little bit of speed to find a good spot into the first turn, and I liked the way he moved up when getting on the lawn for the first time last out.
Race Summary Juris Doctor can trip out from here, as he's got positional pace and has shown a bit of grit through his first three starts.
      Fair Grounds - Race #9
#1 Wherethehitsare This barn can get them ready to roll, and she's one of a few in here with some pretty appealing statebred pedigrees. Rail draw is a negative in a big field, but maybe a mild pop of speed from the gate could get him position.
#13 A G's Charlie This team has done good work with youngsters here in seasons past, and the pedigree here is a big winner for the LA-bred ranks. Should be live.
#3 Go Get Trae There are surely many more interesting fresh faces in here than this guy, who is making his seventh start, but he's got that kind of boring but effective plug-along pace that could keep him in the frame for a share at a nice number as some of the debuters start to give way.
Race Summary Wherethehitsare and A G's Charlie look like the two most interesting fresh faces here, and I'm not really married to either one of them on top -- will take a look at them on the tote and track and adjust as needed to post time, but I'm guessing one of them will be sharp enough to score.
      Fair Grounds - Race #6
#5 Our Moneyman He handled open company in the graduation run at Keeneland, and he has the right kind of style to tuck back just a bit off the early battle and get past these late.
#6 Two Good Old Guys Stakes winner fits well here with this kind of crew, but he meets some other pace and could have a hard time carving out the work early and staying late.
#3 Luna C Considered him as a bit of a swing on top, but I'm not sure what he's made of after just the soft Evangeline debut score. That said, he should get an OK run from just off the splits today.
Race Summary Our Moneyman gets in with LA-breds for the first time today in this minor stakes spot after scoring at Keeneland, and I think he gets the run of the race today.

        Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

        Delta Downs - Race #1
#7 JOHNSON (7-2) Two-time route winner is in good form and in a good spot to repeat.
#3 INDY CHARGE (5-2) Steady works at Delta since his last start, can his speed far.
#4 SILVER REDESDALE (5-1) Improved in this barn, has won at 1M, can stalk and pounce.
Race Summary JOHNSON, well-handled from an outside post in his first start for these connections, stalked the 9-2 pace setter, took command on the turn and left the rallying 5-2 second choice behind in the stretch. He is well-spotted for a repeat victory at the same distance. Bet to win and place and play 7-3 and 7-4 exactas.
        Delta Downs - Race #2
#2 D’BUSKER (9-2) Idle since May, returns to scene of maiden romp against Louisiana-bred rivals.
#3 INEZ (5-1) Has a win and two seconds in her last three long sprint attempts.
#1 MISS CHEESE BREAD (5-2) Controlled slow pace when second, disappeared in follow-up.
Race Summary D’BUSKER ran second off a similar layoff with Del-Cid aboard last winter, then won a $20,000 maiden claimer. She can awaken in her reunion with state-bred rivals. Bet to win and place and play a 1-2-3 exacta box.
        Delta Downs - Race #8
#5 LAST SECOND LOUIE (10-1) Has speed and good one-mile races to summon in weak field.
#6 ARROMAX (7-2) Compiled 9/2-2-4 on main tracks at Canterbury and Hawthorne this year.
#9 DROBNY (2-1) Has loyal following, looks good on paper, but main-track form is suspect.
Race Summary LAST SECOND LOUIE finished second seven times at the $12,500/nw2 level at Laurel Park. He’s 2-for-34 overall but an upgrade is possible when facing rivals tonight who are a combined 16-for-191. He ran into trouble in his first start for this barn at Evangeline Downs and lost by 3 lengths to a next-out repeat winner.

              Charles Town - Race #3 - Post: 7:57pm - Claiming - 6.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $12,400 Class Rating: 60

              Rating:

              #3 SASSY MAXINE (ML=2/1)

SASSY MAXINE - Ran in the last race against a better field at Charles Town. The move down the ladder based on class rating points should suit her well. A horse coming back this quickly after a good contest is a good sign. I like this filly. Has the topmost earnings per race entered in this contest.

Vulnerable Contenders: #7 IMPETUS ECHO (GB) (ML=4/1), #5 RITZ ON BROADWAY (ML=9/2), #1 WAC IS FAST (ML=5/1),

IMPETUS ECHO (GB) - Any speed rating obtained on a track listed as good must be taken with a grain of salt. RITZ ON BROADWAY - 9/2 is not worth it for any mount in a sprint of 6 1/2 furlongs that hasn't finished in the money in a sprint event lately. WAC IS FAST - This horse doesn't have a champion's disposition. Frequently finishes near the winner.

GUEST COMMENTARY: The Brain - SASSY MAXINE - Racing pattern would suggest this racer is in good shape for today's race. I'd calculate a good performance.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Putting our cash on #3 SASSY MAXINE to win. Have to have odds of at least 1/1 or better though
              EXACTA WAGERS: 3 with 1
              TRIFECTA WAGERS: Pass

FOR MAIDENS, FILLIES TWO YEARS OLD. WEIGHT, 120 LBS.
                RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                # 2 VIA 12/1
                # 7 SISSY SOX 6/1
                # 1 CAROOM'S CROUPIER 15/1
VIA is the best wager in this race and could score at a price in here. Should be given a chance for this race if only for the respectable speed figure earned in the last contest. Will probably go to the lead and might never look back. Looks very strong for the conditions of this race today, showing solid figs in dirt sprint races recently. SISSY SOX - This racer is ranked high in this group of animals in earnings per start at the distance/surface. Has been travelling soundly and has among the best speed in the race for today's distance. CAROOM'S CROUPIER - Put up a solid speed rating in the most recent race. Can run another good one in this contest. Has been racing in the most competitive company of the group recently.

                  # 5 PIASTRI 3/1
                  # 7 JETS RIO 2/1
MARC is the top bet in this race. Is tough not to examine based on Equibase Speed Figures which have been strong - 56 avg - of late. This colt should be given a shot just off the earnings per start in dirt route contests alone. The winning percentage shown by horses entered by Asmussen running at this distance are the strongest in this field. PIASTRI - Has solid Equibase Class Figures relative to this field - worth a look. Win percentage with this jockey and trainer combo - 16 percent - solid. JETS RIO - Diaz will probably be able to get this colt to break out quickly in this race. Displays formidable Equibase Speed Figures on average overall when measured up against the rest of this group.

                    Penn National - Race #6 - Post: 8:10pm - SO - 8.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $21,000 Class Rating: 88

                    Rating:

                    #3 CASA JUANITA (ML=7/2)
#2 BLO BY THE FIELD (ML=3/1)

CASA JUANITA - This filly is in good form, having run a strong race on Nov 12th, finishing second. She has the uppermost earnings per start. Check out this one. BLO BY THE FIELD - That 79 fig this filly garnered in her last race tells me she's a chief player today. I like that last race on Oct 29th at Penn National where she ended up first.

                    Vulnerable Contenders: #1 ENIGMATIC (ML=5/2), #6 FIRST PEARL (ML=9/2), #7 ZEENA SWIFT (ML=6/1),

ENIGMATIC - Shouldn't wager on this one as the favorite with little to offer for the risk involved. This favorite ran on October 23rd and hasn't had a morning drill after that. When examining today's class rating, she will have to record a better speed figure than in the last race to be competitive in this dirt route. FIRST PEARL - If you keep betting these kind of 'bridesmaid' types, you're going to be disillusioned often. ZEENA SWIFT - Improbable that the speed fig she registered on Oct 23rd will be enough in this event.
