Al Cimaglia: Hawthorne Racecourse Pick 5 Analysis

    November 21, 2025 | By Al Cimaglia

Hawthorne Racecourse has a 7-race card and the 0.50 Pick 5 starts the action. The sequence has a $3136 carryover, and it will be my focus. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 1 (7:10 PM CDT)

3-Jewel's Legend (9/2)-This 4-year-old started to be tuned-up in late June. Then raced once in the summer and was put away. Came back on 11-7 and raced okay. This will be the its 3rd lifetime start, could bring a much better effort and there isn't much to worry about in this field.
4-Lavender Haze (4-1)-Has only 1 win in 18 races but improved last time and came home with a .57 back half. Gets some post relief and faces the same kind. Juan Franco sticks and should be closer to the leader turning for the wire. Could be a player with a sharp steer.

    Race 2 (7:30 PM CDT)

4-Lottie's Webb (3-1)-Has been racing with some of the better Ill bred 3-year-old fillies and should relish the company. Knows how to win, took 7 pictures in 32 starts and has won 3 times at Haw. Could add to that total if near the top turning for the wire.
7-RK's Toni (3-1)-Drops down to the level of its last win that came 2 back. The Trigg barn has been ice cold, but Jordan Patton takes the lines and that might help. Should be main player but will need a smooth trip, and like the one above has to be close to the leaders heading down the lane.

    Race 3 (7:50 PM CDT)

3-Precoious Macey (4-1)-Comes off a dull try versus better. Did win 2 back against this company but that was with Marcus Miller between the pipes. Andy Shetler takes over and if he can provide a smooth trip this mare could beat this kind again.
4-Rollin In The Sand (1/1)-Not sure the 4-year-old should be even money but it needs to be used against this crew. Gerry Longo who is 80-years old, owns, trains and drives. Longo should have his horse in a position to win turning for the wire.

    Race 4 (8:10 PM CDT)

3-Cheezy Mooss (6-1)-Willing to toss last, went off at 83-1 and raced like it. Now, gets some needed class relief and a positive driver change in Juan Franco. Should be a player at a square price with an alert start.
5-Trevors Redhotgirl (5-1)-This filly competes and if the track is fast could surprise with a sharp steer by Travis Seekman. Raced evenly in its Haw debut, this will be the 2nd start for the Cante barn and when Seekman drives for this outfit they post 29% winners.
7-Calico Sunset (2-1)-Lands in a good spot to cash the top check after being overmatched. Should be in the hunt at the wire but might be over bet.

    Race 5 (8:30 PM CDT)

6-Fox Valley Reba (5-1)-Steps up off a win that was in dominant fashion on the engine. Raced well in both races in Stickney and does face better tonight. Using, expecting a better price than the morning line and should be put in play early on.
8-Maypearl (3-1)-Won its last with a strong effort and should be a main player despite drawing outside. Will look for Brandon Bates to get a decent seat off the gate and then find a live cover flow. Should be rolling hard down the lane.

    0.50 Pick 5

    3,4/4,7/3,4/3,5,7/6,8
    Total Bet=$24

      Fair Grounds Pick 3, November 21, 2025

      November 21, 2025 | By Frank Carulli

      FAIR GROUNDS PICK 4
      Friday, November 21, 2025

The 2025-'26 Meet at the Fair Grounds begins this week, with large and competitive fields throughout. Louisiana-bred 2-year-old fillies will be featured in the $100,000 Donovan L. Ferguson Memorial Stakes on Friday, Nov. 21, the leadoff leg in the Late Pick 3. Here’s a closer look and a suggested $1 ticket that costs $40.

FG 7th race (4:45 p.m. EST) -- Favorites dominated in the first three runnings of the Ferguson Memorial. Not sure if LITTLE MISS CURLIN will assume that role off a smashing debut victory at Delta Downs, but she is worthy as a solo play in the Pick 3 off that effort. She accelerated inside rivals on the backstretch to secure the lead position, was pressed by the 17-1 runner-up to the top of the stretch and exploded in the final 1/8 of a mile to win by 4-1/4 lengths in :58-3/5, less than a second off a 5F starter allowance for the boys on the same card. She breezed a 4F bullet workout in :47.3 since the win.

FG 8th race (5:15 p.m. EST) -- The possibilities abound in this 5-1/2F Maiden Special Weight turf sprint, so go 8-deep on the ticket. MORE SWEETER worked fast between her two starts but was no factor either time. Her debut race, however, produced Grade 2 winner Miss Grillo and two follow-up MSW winners. ACQUAZURRA, a $300,000 sales buy, exited a double ‘key’ dirt sprint and pressed the pace from post 11 while 3-to 5-wide last out. She gets Lasix for her grassy debut. NELSON’S PENNY exits a pair of six-figure turf sprints that produced follow-up stakes winners. STRESS TEST rallied to finish third behind a speedy winner in her debut at Horseshoe Indianapolis. WOOTEN WARRIOR’s sire, Wootton Bassett, was 5-8 and a multiple turf stakes winner of $843k. AL MUHEERAH debuts for trainer Brendan Walsh, whose debut 2-year-olds are 20-for-125 the last two years with a positive return on investment. More than half of those starters were dismissed at single-digit odds. The son of Kitten’s Joy is out of the dam, Musawaah, a stakes-winning grass router in France. MY BLUE LINE and BUGS MALONE will try to enhance trainer Michael Stidham’s strong numbers with first-time starters on the turf, but they are uncoupled in the wagering. MY BLUE LINE’s sire, Blue Point, was 10-for-20 and a multiple Group 1 winner of $2.9 million overseas. BUGS MALONE is out of the dam Maya Princess, whose siblings are 34/6-5-6 in turf sprints. (Note: Use #14 SPRING IN PARIS if she draws into the race.)

FG 9th race (5:45 p.m. EST) -- MY MAN BRANDON (8-1) gets pace to run at and gets the top call in a wide-open, 6F MSW sprint. He sustained a strong 4- and 5-wide rally in a 5F sprint at Delta Downs but couldn’t reach the rival he bumped at the break. MISTER BANDERAS dueled with the second favorite in a race dominated by deep closers. He shortens up for the high-percentage claim barn of trainer Tom Amoss and is a must use off a bullet 5F work over the track. SHOT GUN SHACK ran loose on the lead in his March debut at Fair Grounds and finished second, of a length ahead of FREE SCRIM, his closest pursuer, who didn’t change leads in the stretch. The race produced three MSW winners with an average 58 Beyer and a stakes runner-up. SHOT GUN SHACK tired in his return at Churchill Downs and FREE SCRIM starts off an eight-month layoff. MUSICAL BAND also merits price-play consideration, returning to the main track for the first time since a much-improved second in a productive long sprint at Louisiana Downs in May.

      Suggested $1 Ticket
      FG 7th Race: 2
      FG 8th Race: 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 (AE-#14)
      FG 9th Race: 1, 7, 9, 10, 11
      Cost: $40

        Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

        Churchill Downs - Race #8
#6 Coastal Cabin She stopped in the debut run, but she showed enough positional pace to think she's going to be in a great spot heading into the far turn today, and from there it wouldn't be a shock to see her stay better.
#12 Lady Iva Wouldn't argue *too* hard with anyone landing here, as she's probably tactical enough to work out a trip from here, but she could easily get stuck wide the whole way at a mild kind of price.
#7 Chere Amia Her form tailed off a bit earlier this spring, but she has a couple decent races on her page before that, and I wonder if she can outrun her price for a share today.
Race Summary Coastal Cabin should find a good spot right up top with this crew, and I'm hoping some foundation out of that first start will allow her to kick on better here.
        Churchill Downs - Race #9
#1 Gun Party I am far from sold here, but I think you get a better price today off the dude last out when he was just shy of 5/2 on the board, and his better stuff would do. Principled bounce-back choice.
#4 Not This Boy He ran a big one to stay with Hit Show at Mountaineer a couple starts back, but I wanted to see something better last out when short at 4/5. Capable with his better stuff.
#7 Catching Freedom He still has some room to come forward while finding his form in the third start back after knocking heads with some tough customers on the Derby Trail a couple years back. Small step forward would do.
Race Summary Draw a line through the last one and Gun Party looks imposing today, and he should find a great trip from the fence at at least a slightly better number than he offered last out.
        Churchill Downs - Race #10
#10 Noulikeabook Only a mild move from her before flattening last time out, but I could see her finding a similar kind of run today, and perhaps she sustains it better here with that debut under her belt.
#2 Miss Blanco On the fence here, but she has been working regularly for this for a team that can have the right ones ready to go. Lot of interesting players in this one.
#8 Poppy Woppy Get a look at her on the track ahead of this, but I wonder if she might be live enough to snag a small piece of this while overlooked.
Race Summary Noulikeabook has some upside off the kind of race I usually like from a debuter when they make a mild middle move and go flat, and she should offer a solid price in a race that feels wide open.

          Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

          Fair Grounds - Race #1
#7 HONOR HIS HALF (9-2) Romped at this level at 6F, met front-end sharpies in last pair.
#3 EAGLE EXPRESS (7-2) $90K 6F earner dueled with odds-on fave and held third at 6-1/2F two back.
#1 RUMPUS (8-1) Gets class relief, gets pace to rally into, starts from the rail.
Race Summary HONOR HIS HALF chased Hialeah Hottie, a four-time wire-to-wire winner since June, in a 5F turf sprint and ‘kept on’ to finish third. He romped three starts ago for his third win in eight starts at 6F, then steadied to avoid a fallen rival while favored She’sinthearmynow was winning by 10 lengths for the second time recently with an average 90 Beyer. Bet to win and place and play 7-1, 7-3 and 3-7 exactas.
          Fair Grounds - Race #3
#4 ROLL GYPSY ROLL (8-1) Late runner can upset with 16/3-6-3 record on the dirt.
#6 GYPSAN (7-2) Seeks duplicate of sweeping move in victory two starts ago.
#3 MISS KENNEDY (9-2) Held her own against state-bred competition, holds tactical edge.
Race Summary ROLL GYPSY ROLL, the lone entrant without a win this year, is worth a price shot, nonetheless, to notch her first win at Fair Grounds. She earned comments the comments ‘rallied… improved … willingly …. just missed’ in her six route races in 2025. Bet to win and place and play a 4, 6/3, 4, 6/ALL trifecta.
          Fair Grounds - Race #5
#2 EL MAXIMO (9-5) Faced quality rivals as 2yo, plunges for 3yo debut, today’s Best Bet.
#1 PENEI (9-2) Rallied wide in stretch but couldn’t reach the 2-1 winner as the odds-on fave.
#3 PRINCE DAY (2-1) Takes some catching in third start after one-year layoff, distance the question.
Race Summary EL MAXIMO takes a magnified class drop for his seasonal debut on the surface switch to the main track. He was a non-factor from mid-pack in his 2-year-old debut while chasing favorite Star’s Magic, who repeated in a six-figure allowance. Then he lacked kick in his second start against eventual three-time stakes winner Tom’s Magic. His recent bullet workout from the gate is encouraging. Bet to win and place and play 2-1 and 2-3 exactas.

                # 6 EAST VILLAGE 4/1
My pick in this contest is INFILTRATE. He looks quite good in this slot and I expect will be on the front end or close at the midpoint. Has to be given a chance based on the very strong speed rating garnered in the last race. The average class rating alone makes this horse a key contender. EASY WIND - Could best this group here, showing strong figs of late. With a respectable 87 Equibase speed fig last time out, will definitely be a factor in this contest. EAST VILLAGE - His 79 average has this colt with among the best Equibase Speed Figs in this race. McPeek has well above average dividends at this distance/surface.

                  #5 GLORYIBEE (ML=2/1)
                  #7 COURTINBYMOONLIGHT (ML=5/1)

MADDIENLIZZYSHONOR - Cabrera should have her moving solid on the turn. It looks like Cabrera had to be more familiar with this filly on Sep 19th when riding her for the first time. Back on board again today. Always be careful of the longer priced animal when a trainer has an 'uncoupled' entry in a race. Had a strong closing move last race out, running the last quarter in less than 25 seconds. A similar effort today, and it's straight to the winner's circle. Faced tougher in the last race at Remington Park. Based on Equibase class ratings, this is a weaker group, so I will put this horse on my list of strong contenders. Look for this one to go all the way to the finish line at some pretty decent odds right here. Ran fourth in last race, but not more than five from the lead at the end. GLORYIBEE - The Aug 20th race at Horseshoe Indianapolis was at a class level of (86). Dropping down in class drastically, so she should be in a good position. Aboard this horse on August 20th and Asmussen is back again in the irons this time around. The 81 recent race speed rating looks good on paper. COURTINBYMOONLIGHT - Really have to figure this race horse is going to be close at the wire.

                  Vulnerable Contenders: #3 PROTOCOL (ML=8/5), #1 QUEEN CLANCY (ML=8/1),

PROTOCOL - Can't play this morning-line choice off the extended vacation. QUEEN CLANCY - Just cannot play any racer right back after she doesn't hit the board after any extended rest time. Could be tough for this mount to beat this group off of that last speed figure. Improbable to improve enough to run a figure close enough to today's Equibase class figure, so put her on the likely underlays list.

GUEST COMMENTARY: The Turf Man - MADDIENLIZZYSHONOR - Moving to dirt today, from last race on the turf at Remington Park. This racer has a good chance to pickup her first win against these thoroughbreds.

                    # 9 DUE WE DARE 6/1
                    # 6 MUNCLE 7/2
ZIPPY TOGA is the top wager in this race. Has to be given a chance based on the strong speed rating put up in the last race. Has to be given a chance versus this group of animals displaying respectable figs lately and an average Equibase Speed Figure of 57 under similar conditions. With better than average trips to the winner's circle, Delcid will probably have this gelding in excellent position to win the contest. MUNCLE - He must be given consideration given the formidable speed figures. With better than average trips to the winner's circle, Melancon ought to have this colt in excellent position to win the contest.

                      Charles Town - Race #8 - Post: 10:32pm - Maiden Claiming - 6.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $12,400 Class Rating: 68

                      Rating:

                      #4 ROYCES RIDE (ML=6/1)
                      #1 WAR THUNDER (ML=8/1)
                      #5 GO LONG (ML=12/1)

ROYCES RIDE - I have to figure Hunt is making a good move here. This gelding can only profit from the shorter trip. Starting from the inside, this mount should have a distinct advantage. His pace setting style should serve him well in this short race of 6 1/2 furlongs. WAR THUNDER - I like to bet on this handicapping theory, a thoroughbred coming back off a strong effort within the last 30 days. This animal could be tough this time, especially since Almodovar rode in the last race and now should be plenty familiar with this one. This tight track favors pace setting horses starting from the inside. Seeing as this is what we have with this horse, I'm going to take a long look at this one. GO LONG - This rider and handler have a favorable return on investment when they join forces. After the race aboard this horse on Nov 7th, the jock is going to be acquainted with the gelding much better. Last time out, finished fourth in the mud at Charles Town. Has to do better in this event.

Vulnerable Contenders: #9 WILEY WILLARD (ML=6/5), #10 MY LUCKY ACE (ML=9/2),

WILEY WILLARD - In this circumstance, this questionable contender's inability to make up ground in the last contest is a troubling signal. MY LUCKY ACE - Pace is so influential, and this speed merchant is going to have an early battle on his hands. This racer ran a substandard speed figure last race out. He shouldn't show signs of improvement and will likely suffer defeat today running that rating.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Go with #4 ROYCES RIDE on top if we're getting at least 3/1 odds
                      EXACTA WAGERS: Box [1,4,5]
